i would love to thank all of youre beautiful family for keeping me going and getting me past my cancer . ive had Head and neck Cancer with Chemo and Radio therapy over the last two years .Every time jve had a moment ive watched youre family which has inspjred me to turn my tiny bacm garden into a little crop area . Thankyou , God bles you all xx
Love your videos and watching you carry your little one around on your back. So nice watching the kiddos help with the animals on the homestead. Many blessings from a homestead mama of 7.
Animals are unpredictable regardless of how "tame". Infants should not be strapped to anyone's back when milking or a lot of other farm chores. Children should not be in pens with grown hogs. I raised my kids on a homestead, but one has to be smart about the risks involved in handling a 1600 lb. animal.
Justin, would you be willing to consider adding a “Watch this video next” link in the corner of the video? As a suggestion for today, Surprise’s Birth..? Or a link to another milking training? Love all the content! Thank you for sharing!
From a viewing point of view, that was a fun video to watch. When I was your younger kids age, my dad used to milk a cow for the family. Then when my eldest child was a bub, we used to have fresh cow's milk again. Something special about having milk straight from the cow. Blessings from Australia.
Thank you so much for making this video. I am in the exact same situation. My heifer had a calf and I want to milk her but it’s her first calf and she’s never been milked. I feel more confident that I can milk her after watching this.🙂🙂
Hopefully other Homesteaders have been paying attention over the years. I knew it way back when that you were not just interviewing other farmers! You were educating yourself about how to farm and farm well. Justin Rhoades you really are deserving of success because you have truly put in the work.
I wish my Mom would have talked about life on the farm, but we grew up differently, and I think that was the intent, so we could grow up differently. However, she didn't realize that if she had talked about life on the farm, we would have related to her better. She just passed 10 days ago, and was 99 and a half. One key to her long life was to take care of us and herself first, and spend more time looking forward and preparing for new days to come, than looking back. That is what she said. One farm element that I think your whole family would enjoy is an outdoor Sauna. Mom did have that on her parent's farm, and My Dad also grew up with a residential, backyard Sauna. Then he put an electric powered steam Sauna in our house separate from the two regular bathrooms. But, on a farm, an outdoor one is better.
something we do on our farm(because we have many half jerseys and jerseys and brown swiss) we handle the baby's udders from the time the are small as well as halter training that way when it comes time to train to a chute it's not something they feel they need to fight
I thought a heifer was a cow that hadn't had a calf yet? Great training of her to the stanchion. I like that you named the calf Surprise because he sure was. Thanks for this Justin. Happy Easter Rhodes family!🙏🐣🐰
You probably heard of the famous Texas cowboy Charlie Goodnight (1836-1929). He had a steer named Old Blue that led about 8 trail drives. Goodnight is a good historic figure. He once crossed the Brazos River near Elm Creek in 1863, West of Fort Worth, Texas. River had dried up. He crossed a 20x100 mile stretch of dead Buffalo. All dead from the drought. He said in his book that the blow-flies were horrendous. COWS are very intelligent. You may have a keeper in the milk cow. Eaglegards...
When i first seen the thumbnail for this video i thought that was studmuffin and i was like Justin........you're fixing to have big have problems lol haha
I really like these shorter videos. Sometimes I just don't have time for the longer ones at the time I want to watch, but can often fit one of these during a short break.
Are you thinking of keeping her? will she keep getting bred by her daddy and all calves are immediately to be food? Are you thinking of getting another bull? So many questions. You could also sell her to a family who needs a milk cow. I know you have a heifer saved for a future milk cow. I do know she was so much easier than to train than her wild eye mama Flossie
Are you going to keep her and milk her for your family or are you planning to sell her to another homestead. I think many homesteading families would love to have her. Even with her getting breed to early the way she has been raised and her mom and the bull go to her favor.
@@LiveGrowRescue I understood that in a video a while ago. He is putting forth a lot of effort for a cow he is going to butcher unless he is needing content for a video. If that is the reason I believe he is giving a lot of soft hearted people mixed messages.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree, we milked on the family farm as a third generation dairy operation. After 30 years of being involved cattle were always referred to as this way, with our veterinarians, feed reps and any other professionals involved. Maybe it is different working as homesteaders? Have a blessed day.
Wouldn't it make sense to keep her as your next milk cow? She could replace the cow that has the issues with her udder getting mastitis. Just a thought.
How old are they when you need to separate the calf from the dairy cow? And do you try to milk a little before you separate for practice? I guess it’d be easier if you told me what your milking schedule is. My milk cow just calved yesterday and want to milk her for personal use later. Please help. Lol
Love the Calf Name. That's what I've called it from Birth lol Surprise! My she learned to milk so easy. So what are you going to do with her now that you have trained her to milk? Love Your Videos. Peace from WV
If you have the calf out suckling on the mother, only give that calf one nipple and you milk the other three. Calf will know better and the mother will also know that you have control of all three
My mama got her hip broke from a cow she was milking, after that we had the 2 metal clamps with a chain from one clap to the other on each leg so we would not get kicked I am sure u can still buy them
Jessica Soward of Roots and Refuge uses a kick bar so hers can't kick. When we get to having a dairy cow this will be something on hand from the start. I'm glad we have so many to learn from on Abundance+!!
Informative vedio. @justinrhodes can you make a vedio based on before pregnancy of cow what to do and what shouldn't. that would also really help me out from 🇳🇵 nepal you fan.
Just to clarify, isn't a heifer a cow that had never been bred or never had a calf? Not being picky, just trying to be sure I have the words right in my head 🙃

Amazing cow. Amazing farming method. Thanks for sharing. Lovely family.

I really like the no kick hip bar that Jess from Roots and Refuge has for her girls. Might make it safer for the kids.

Nice work! Thanks for teaching us!
Fist time ? 🤣 OG youtuber Justin even messes up sometimes.
Beautiful cows and your kids are great learners from a great teacher.
I train people in a suburban Herdshare. They have never milked. This was great on not getting kicked!! 💕
That is absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing
This was an awesome way to share the progress with us! Thank you!!! Loved being able to watch the heifer learn as each day went by!
Someone call the Hoof GP, that cow needs a hoof trim! ;)

Love this, thanks Justin and Jonah! Blessings ✅✅✅👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
Oh lord consistency is the key and every farmer knows that ! If they don't they soon will !!
You should hike that sling for your kiddo up higher. Looks like that is killer for your lower back. Love the videos!
Nice job!
Good job!
I wish you'd keep Polly. She's so sweet and beautiful. Just look at the pretty baby she gave you!❤

What breed of cow is Polly? Looks like a Dexter? You are a brave man to leave horns on her. God Bless! Happy Easter!
She is half jersey half American milking devon
I was wondering the same thing, and was disappointed to see there wasn't a response to the question. I think she might be an American Milking Devon.

Get the “cow can’t kick” bar.
Wow that was fast considering I didn’t start right after she calved you going to keep here for a milk cow
Justin Rhodes stated in his newsletter of 15th April that they plan to sell her with her calf as a family milk cow.
i was refreshing youtrube and saw 1minute ago on your video ....clicked as fast as i could ....
While you're training the mother to be milked. You can socialize the calf so it's used to being touched on the stomach and teets.
That was fast training. The calf is very frisky. Ha. 💖

They've migrated over to their paid platform (Abundance Plus, I think it's called).
Buy a cow immobilized/ anti kick bar. It might save you guys from injury.

So she's not a heifer anymore if she's had a calf she's just a cow. :) I enjoy your videos just found them.
I know your trying a new style blog. Just wanted you to know I miss the old style longer day in the life of the Rhodes.
Justin, what brand is your hat??
Have you ever tried the "cow cufflink" ..."cow can't kick bar" (Roots & Refuge uses that) so the cow can't kick you or the bucket?
Isn't Justin where roots and refuge got the idea for the hip bar?

Do you trim your cows hooves?
Oh my stars, come to our farm. I need help so badly! Our cows about to be beef. 😭
Justin...I'm in love with all the new different content
On our ranch, a *heifer is a female bovine that has not dropped a calf.*
Then after it drops, its a cow...
No, when a heifer drops it’s first calf the mother is called a first calf heifer, then after she calves the second time she is considered a cow.
