  • Is democracy in decline today? What is “Post-Wall” Europe, born after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and why is it now gone? How is Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian invasion changing Europe?
UkraineWorld invites Timothy Garton Ash, a British historian, Professor of European Studies at the University of Oxford, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford, and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. His latest book is "Homelands: A Personal History of Europe".
This episode is a recording of Professor Garton Ash’s meeting with the Ukrainian public in Kyiv, at the UkraineWorld Club and PEN Ukraine, on May 15th, 2024. It is part of UkraineWorld’s series Thinking in Dark Times.
Host: Volodymyr Yermolenko, Ukrainian philosopher, chief editor of UkraineWorld and president of PEN Ukraine

Timothy Garton Ash says, "Ukraine must win," but doesn't say Russia must lose. Who is going to defeat Russia? Europe?

This discussion really helped some of my understandings. The will to fight for freedoms is not an unfolding process, nor a natural one. Poland and Ukraine being reborn from being dead, from being colonized by empires. Pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will. I'm thinking that the resistance to democratic forms by authoritarian populists can only be overcome by significant checks on the absurd monopolization of power by the absurdly rich, and by somehow teaching young authoritarians to question their indoctrination by making them part of collective, optimistic efforts.

I work with young people and anecdotically I find your last point to be the case. The question is how to bring that about? The age of AI, automatisation, atomisation, “social” media (in fact they should be called lonely media), rising inequality etc go directly against being part of a forward-looking optimistic community decision-making collective…

@@karelkieslich6772 I agree. Only a few parents care, and their efforts are often for naught. The focus of public schools would need changing (something like Aldous Huxley's Pala). Because most of those in power don't want reflective, critical thinkers, if it ever happens, it's unlikely to be soon.

Such an intelligent discussion and a delight to listen to. We want to hear truth and freedom must be fought for against those that want to control the narrative. Will Trump rip apart the curtain of lies that governments hide behind. Maybe not, maybe corruption wins again. He must protect his family.

Trump is the LIE personified! Mafia politics over the rule of law and human progress in the form of expanding democracy for everybody. Trump does not dig facts or voting or equality under the law. Because he is a gangster. What are you talking about?

I wouldn't blame liberalism for inequality. Neoliberalism, maybe. Liberal democracy, no.
    Otherwise, a great discussion.

Are Europeans concerned that a triumphant Ukraine will become the new Russia? Are Europeans afraid of Ukraine?

What decline of power are they talking about? In absolute terms almost every nation is more powerful now than they were at any point in the past. Their weapons are more powerful, their people are healthier and better educated, their industries are more advanced. Only some of the kleptocratic socialist states have slipped backward or got stuck in neutral.
