  • The 2024 Lionel Gelber Prize was presented on Thursday, April 18 to author and historian Timothy Garton Ash during a hybrid event at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.
Professor Garton Ash delivered the Gelber Prize Lecture, which was followed by a moderated question and answer session with Janice Stein, the 2024 Gelber Prize Jury Chair, before being presented with the 2024 Prize by Judith Gelber, Chair of the Lionel Gelber Prize Board.
Timothy Garton Ash’s Lionel Gelber Prize-winning book, Homelands: A Personal History of Europe gives a unique account of the history of Europe since 1945. This is history illustrated by memoir and reportage. Garton Ash draws on his extensive personal notes from 50 years of events witnessed, places visited and history makers encountered (from Margaret Thatcher to Vladimir Putin) to chart the rise and then faltering of the quest for a 'Europe whole and free'.
The Lionel Gelber Prize is awarded annually to the world's best non-fiction book in English on foreign affairs that seeks to deepen public debate on significant international issues. The prize is presented by the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto.
