I am so honored to know you've watched this, thank YOU for making such inspiring work! I mean that truly, you are an inspiration. You make what you want no matter what others say, a lot of people could learn from that! Again, keep doing what you're doing, man. :)
I honestly love the physical differences between LKJ and RBG. How John always keeps his ears down but Ratboy keeps his up. How Ratboy looks younger while John looks older(??) Aside from that. I love your animation style.
Something I also love, which doesn't come across so easily in the original medium is the use of stretching powers. LKJ is far more liberal with the use of his stretching powers, using them to express emotions more than anything, while RBG only ever uses them to protect his friends (Like when he fights the fish away from The Summer Solstice Baby) or when he's playing the piano. But they both have the same capabilities in that department.
I swear, R.B.G's series may be the most underrated and under-appreciated I've seen. If you ignore the obvious animation errors, and the text-to-speech voices, then this series really is unique.
I really enjoy the way your drew LKJ here. It makes him look like a scruffy, eccentric old man. I don't know if that's what you were going for but I like it.
Whatever makes you feel happy, dear. However, in my honest opinion, I'd love to see this whole series be formed into this way. This series and ratboy dreams Minecraft ( especially the interlude song with LKJ and Happyman ). Thank you so much for this beautiful version. It really brings out a the Disney child wonder in me. God bless you, hon and good luck with your future projects.
Due to the warped animation style and monotonic voice of the series, it is hard to distinguish the emotion in the characters through dialogue alone. In a way, this is necessary in order to give the audience a feeling that something is "off," even when serious. However, these animatics show the series in a different light via detailed drawings. They give the characters depth by showing facial expressions and subtle body language, something that could not be done in the original's warped animation. Your animatics show more clearly LKJ's unwavering will and sorrow; Sneezy's curiosity of the world and concern for his friend's mental state; and Ratboy's pained guilt and sadness.
My god, I just LOVE how you animate LKJ. You convey so much of his personality through his actions and facial expressions! The part where he's envisioning his new kingdom literally made me cry tears of joy; I could practically see a Disney-esque animated sequence of the whole scene. ^_^
i want to thank you for changing my life forever. your animatic was randomly recommended to me on my homepage and boy, was that the best recommendation ive ever got. you got me hooked on rbg, the flood is now my new favourite thing ever, ive bought the albums, i constantly terrorize my twitter followers with lkj quotes and just. ahh. thank you so much for being the perfect introduction.
Every since learning that Sneezy hated LKJ in Starship ep. 12, I can't help but think of the the part at 1:13 being the moment where Sneezy realizes that Lkj isn't as bad as he thought he was, even though this was made way before Starship 12. The look on his face is even kind of surprised.
This right here- this animatic has stuck in my mind ever since it got recommended to me a year or two ago, and this was around the time I was learning that Ratboy Genius had done more than just an iconic scene for Shrek Retold Tonight, I finally sat down and binge-watched all of the main Ratboy Genius videos, and I'm very glad I did. It ended up being much more than I ever expected; an incredibly creative and artistic series with a ton of heart and personal passion layered into it. Thank you so much for making this animatic and introducing me to the emotional artistry of this series! As I believe RecD said on a different RBG animatic of yours, these animatics have helped bridge the gap between unaware viewers (like me) and RBG's works, and I'm super grateful The animatic pairs also so well with RBG's sweeping soundtrack, it's a joy to watch- had to come back here and share my appreciation once more now that I've seen the original work that inspired it ^^ I'm also now able to appreciate details in this animatic that I wasn't able to without context the first time
Thank you so much! I'm glad I could capture the sense of wonder his music has. I read all the comments for these old videos of mine and I'm always so happy to see people dive into Mr. Dorin's work :) It genuinely warms my heart.
Thank you very ,very much kind sir. As soon as I layed eyes on this post, my eyes where filled with the same shimmer a child might have right before opening a present. And as your work unfolded in front of me, my eyes got watery by nature of joy! You upliftet the glory of the source material by more than just 1 notch. Feel honored, and please, keep up the good work.
I love the fact that he is smaller but intimidating with his long neck, anf still it looks natural when he does that here. I like how you made his lil friend (I don't remember his name 😭) and the people, they look like lost souls and ready for hope at the same time, Idkw
Am I the only one who thinks it'd be interesting if LKJ just enlarged his eyes instead of using binoculars? Or elongated them? Or would that be too unsettling? He's all stretchy so I'd figure doing something like that would come naturally to him when focusing on distant objects.
Wow, very well done! 3:30 - 3:42 is amazing, much more powerful than I was anticipating it to be. The style reminds me of Dr. Seuss. Or maybe your representation of LKJ reminds me of the Grinch. ;)
Dude, I love your style. If Ratboy Genius looked more like this and had a more polished story/artistic direction, it would be really bizarre, but potentially really wonderful. Great work, man!
This animatic is absolutely stunning, you really gave personality to the characters. The sequence where he's imagining his new kingdom has a great energu to it. Bravo! You did this some real justice
Such lovely work! It's a pure joy to see more of these being created, and I can feel the exasperation and excitement blending in every frame, perfectly capturing the mood of the episode.
This thing its like taken from a book, and the expression of your drawings just make it better, i dont do it often but im actually crying of how nice and beautiful this is.
This is beautiful!! I'm so glad I found your animations. They really help me understand and enjoy the original material. If you made any more then know that I'd always be delighted to see em!!! Honestly- good job, this is outstanding. I can tell that a lot of effort went into this.
Rghhh when it comes to animatics I always spend 6 hours straight drawing like 2 frames on the first day then get tired of the project and back out. I suppose I'll just need to think of the end goal and spend less time in one go...?
I'd try to crank out plenty of simple storyboards first, that's how I always do it. Then you can always go back in and clean stuff up later. My first animatic on here was pretty much my exact same doodley storyboards, just cropped individually and put into Premiere. That way you can creatively crank out more material that can always be smoothed later, but at least the idea is there. :)
I love how much imagination you've put into this, taking away the creepiness of the 3D animation really brings out the emotion of the story. Watching Ratboy has always been a bit like being a kid and letting your imagination fill the gaps.
I remember leaving a comment in your first video featuring a short yet amazingly well crafted animatic for this series. Now, two years later, I remembered you and decided to check on your channel for no real reason, just to see this was uploaded. I wish you luck and success in your life, and I hope you receive the views this really deserves. PS: Yes, I'd like to see more LKJ please :) thank you for this.
this is downright beautiful. seeing ratboy genius turned into something so pleasant to look at while still making the story work with the visuals, still making the masterful compositions fit along with the animation. improving upon what was already achieved and bringing it to a whole new level. this animatic is excellent.
