Is Singapore increasingly drawn towards China? | DW News

  • Ethnic Chinese make up about 75 percent of Singapore's population, constituting the largest ethnic group in the multi-racial country that also includes Malays and Indians. And over the past decade, Beijing has stepped up efforts to reach out to Chinese Singaporeans in a way that has drawn concern from the city-state's political establishment.
Notably, the Chinese Communist Party has sought to build relationships with Singaporean media, giving journalists special access in return for favorable coverage. You may remember the disappearance of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai. She had accused a senior official in China of sexual assault. As global concern about her well-being grew, Peng briefly re-appeared, speaking to Singaporean newspaper Lianhe Zaobao.
For More on this we talk to Washington Post correspondent Shabani Mahtani.

Western leaders and MSM knows but they refused to acknowledge that China copied SG's model and became so successful today. There are too many similarities. Charlie Munger told the MSM repeatedly that China learned from SG but he was ignored. The west refused to admit that ideology does not matter to bring prosperity and wealth to a nation as proven by China today.

How interesting a 'Chinese' reporter host and interview this segment. So does Ms Chan, defined by her DNA, that she is an actor of Chinese gov influence? What an absurd and superficial way of looking at the relationship between China and Singapore, or the entire ASEAN region for that matter.
Also are we so naïve to assume that government reaching out and influencing media, local and foreign, is not a standard practice in anywhere around the world? How does DW and all major Western media always presenting China, not only the gov but also its people and society as a whole, in a negative light constantly (with the smog filters and 'at what cost') truly represent a balanced media reporting with integrity or a mouth-piece of its influencers?
Honestly, it's just the normal business any capable government would and should do, to influence opinions of not only their citizens but also world at large, I don't see why China should not do it when West gov does all the time. No need to make yourselves look innocent and high with morals.

Weak analysis by the interviewee. People around the world, including Asians support Xi's China Dream because they can see that the CCP policies lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty. In turn, a strong China has lifted the quality and standards of living in countries around the world. America and many leading Western companies such as Apple, Mercedes, and Boeing have benefitted from China's rise ... In contrast, Singaporeans are saddened to see the destruction of American democracy from within. The election of a race-baiting con man and liar Trump, and gerrymandering by Republicans just to guarantee GOP seats. The insurrection of January 6, and up to today, not a single coup plotter has been sent to jail for this assault on American democracy. So much for the Western narrative on the rule of law!?!? If China does not tout its achievements, I will guarantee you that the Western media will sell the "snake oil" of the beauty of Western democracy, thinking the rest of the world is blind to the decay and corruption that is evident in American politics. There is a reason why US politicians have nicknames such as Cancun Cruz, Moscow Mitch, Gym Jordan, Liar Trump, Spineless McCarthy ...

I am in Singapore currently. I am not Chinese by race, but I do know people from all the 3 major races here. Not all are "professionals". Some are people who are contractors, simple businessmen, etc.
With that said, local newspapers are not doing too well. Especially the local Tamil/Malay/Chinese newspapers. I think even the main English newspaper, Straits Times is in the middle of a crises of reporting wrong(higher) readership figures.
It's mostly the older generation which still read newspapers (if and when they read them - I know of many older generation who have stopped. And some used to read them daily to weekly or lesser frequency now). And even the local TV channels are hardly watched by the local population. Substantial number of them are either often watching Cable channels, or streaming services such as Netflix.
Most of the people I know seem to have a neutral or negative view on China. There is always concern that the richer Chinese from China are coming in and buying up all the upmarket properties, etc. And there is also concern they are eating away at the lower end of the job market as well (waiter, construction workers, etc).
Actually alot of people joke about the scam calls and messages you get from China.
And as for Sinovac, it was only a tiny percentage of the people here who opted for it. Some who opted for Sinovac, got one dose of Sinovac, one dose of Moderna and a booster of Pfizer to try and get protection from covid in different ways (can't say this is a wrong strategy - assuming they don't conflict with each other).
I think Singapore (at least the government) has been trying to stay as neutral as possible between US (the West) and China. With slight leaning towards the US. Singapore also has military training ties with Taiwan. So I really doubt there is an official move towards China.
As for freedom, democracy, etc - local media is on somewhat tight control. Reasonable amount of transparency and pretty corruption free. Yes, a minister is currently undergoing investigation for corruption now, but I think last it happened was about 30-40 years ago. And the fact that it is happening, and is publicly announced, I believe, is an indication that government is not in favour of corruption in general. I think they block the top 100 porn sites, to show they are against "moral decay", symbolically. Easy to access if you want anyway. Don't even need a VPN unless you want one of the top 100 sites.
There are elections and there are opposition members in Parliament, including an official "Leader of the Opposition" post, held by the leader of the biggest opposition grouping in Parliament.
I also expect that if Singapore gets too in favour of China, there will be rumblings from the Indian and Malay communities here. So the government can't afford to show favouritism to any one Asian country (since the 3 major races here are from different parts of Asia), without creating discontent.
I do travel around sometimes. Expect I will be in Malaysia next month.

Lots of Chinese in Singapore have been called bananas or potatoes, and told that they gave up their culture to bow to western superiority and now the narratives have flipped. Islam, Judaism and Christianity shares the same ancestry too, so it is one religion isn’t it? Will they combined?

It is not surprised that Singapore tends to side closer with countries that are more rationale and effective. In this case, China emerge as a more reasonable and stable country.

I very much doubt if there is a large proportion of ethnic Chinese in Singapore that are pro-Beijing.
China sympathisers in Singapore are more likely to be older, more literate in Chinese than English, and more likely to identify culturally with China. They are a diminishing segment of the population. Younger Singaporeans are less likely to identify culturally with China. Many will be more proficient in English than Chinese. They are more likely to holiday in the US or Japan than in China.
It will be interesting to see the circulation figures of Lianhe Zaobao in Singapore. Don't forget there is no free press in Singapore - every paper and TV station is either owned or controlled by the Singapore government. What is published in Lianhe Zaobao should not be treated as a reliable guide to public opinion in Singapore.
