I remember sitting at my friends house, he told me to watch this guy and I had never heard of WoW or knew nothing about it. I watched this video and fell in love instantly. I bought WoW the next day and made an undead mage. Here I am, some 10-11 years later. Playing an undead mage. I mean holy shit.....
Hell yeah. I literally owe Otherguy so much for the musical tastes I have now. Would watch the videos every day after school back in high school. He got me super into Thrice, among some other bands. Granted, most of the older stuff in the videos I only listen to for nostalgia, as my tastes have evolved - but it all stems from a lot of the music he used. If you're out there Otherguy, THANK YOU.
Yeah I havae the same story, I saw this pvp video at my friends place back in 2005 and the next day I started playing a troll mage, it's been my main ever since
Before the guides and online streams I had to watch and see what build Otherguy ran back in the day. Watching all his videos to be the best fire mage pre set pieces was so much fun. I still watch these videos just got the music.
This video was super revolutionary back in 2005. I remember in those days, I never even thought of the utility of using Scorch instead of fireball in PVP (faster cast, easier to get off and be mobile). Most mages back then just spammed fireball in PVP. This was a highly innovative and groundbreaking video for its' time.
Man I miss the days of going onto that site that i can’t remember the name of and downloading these every morning to get world pvp tips. Otherguy was a legend. I was blown away when I saw this.
my all time favorite wow video pvp ever... i made a mage back then just because of this guy... sorrowhill! I always remember otherguy when i walk throught sorrowhill
Otherguy shaped who I was as a mage. I would watch his videos over and over to learn from them. I knew them so well that I used them when I PvP'd and was very successful with it. Imagine my surprise when I found out Otherguy was on the Illidan server, same one that I was on. Even more, I was an Alliance. I remember the first time I found him hanging out in Sorrow Hill. I was so nervous. But it all fell together so naturally. I watched his videos so many times that I knew what he was going to do before he did it. I could predict every move. I ended up losing the first fight because he had to use a health potion and I had none. But when I went back to get my revenge, he saw me rez, he saddled up, and left. That wasn't the only encounter I had with him. I ran into him in Sorrow Hill a few more times, but those times I won. It felt good to beat the guy I looked up to. I remember one time I found him outside of Ironforge, taunting low level players into PvP and then killing them. I was able to drive him back. But I lost a little repesect for him that day. I sometimes wonder how many times I was recorded, but wasn't put in his videos because I beat him.
I'm not going to lie, world pvp meant a lot of ganking back then (and heck, I've never been that good at pvp so it wasn't always fun). But there was much more organised and equal grounds world pvp and that probably means that you're not going to see people play like this again. When I played Legion even when I faced an enemy player in pvp the levels may have been the same, but item levels completely skew that. I mean, the gear gap has existed from very early on, to some extent, but I think it's worse now than then. Of course, WoW wasn't built with pvp in mind so I suppose I should cherish what I experienced in vanilla. Southshore - Tarren Mill and Astranaar - Crossroads especially. But I can also remember as a newbie in Darkshore traveling in an impromptu group using shadowmeld and the forest for cover to track and attack invading Horde (who massively overleveled us, I think ;o) ). Yeah, vanilla had it's moments. The pvp honour system, though.. it broke people.
Some people keep comparing otherguy and vurtne...I think they are two awesome mages in their own way. Vurtne for showing the world that skill>gear, and OG for teaching the world how to play mages.
Y'all rolling mages after seeing his videos, pff! I already was an Undead Mage from the get go. Seeing him using Scorch like that was a mind-blowing revelation and completely changed how I played. So good.
see the cool thing about this guy was he was using scorch when nobody thought to use scorch, also he is blue'd out and not drenched in raid epics, this guy had skill when the game was a strange place.
Exactly... In that time, nobody was using scorch because of low dmg, but nobody was realizing that in pvp was important the cast speed more than the dmg itself (for casters, and in certain situations ofcourse), except Otherguy :D (just FYI, frostbolt (last rank) cast time was 3 sec, firaball 3.5 sec and 6 sec for pyroblast)
At least you could kill healers once upon a time. As a holy paladin on MoP it takes 4+ people to kill me. PvP was fun in BC, after that it sucked. At coming from someone who plays on a full blizzlike vanilla private server (Emerald Dream), vanilla was still the best. It's not just nostalgia, it really was the best.
Classic wow: nostalgia based love and of you watch mages like atmas like I did, you would see how overpowered certain specs were, bc: had broken healers that were unkillable, wrath: had horrible burst compared to the small health pools, cats: blizzard finally attempted to lengthen fights with a hefty health increase and relatively less dmg increase, mop: they extenuated cata logic even further
You forget that 4:3 was the common screen ratio to be playing at. The UI taking up the whole width of the screen. Nowadays this kind of play isn't that impressive I suppose but you have to remember that when this was made WoW had multiple millions of players and world pvp or pvp in general was still in its infancy.
Because a lot of the skills has since then been removed. Granted, most were situational, but highly useful. The streamlining of each spec, making several abilities available in only certain specs has certainly made the class more accessible, but with less flavor and variety.
its funny how simplifying seems like an answer, but really in hindsight your removing options. It makes the game more boring, and easier. Talent trees contrary to popular opinion, do have variety in choices. Retail wow is god awful. Removing talents? Removing skill trees? Why? its the most fun part of the game.
Back then you couldn't shapeshift out of polymorph effects. You would be immune while shapeshifted, but you couldn't break out if caught in caster form. This was changed pretty early on in Vanilla, though.
Did Otherguy really shoot himself in the head irl, or is that just some BS someone posted on that Thrice video for the first song? I hope is BS, if not RIP Otherguy, frigging legend.

This guy is just a low lvl banker of noobs who aren’t even prepared, not impressed at all after learning the game P.s he used shadow pot to beat a 58 priest ..... tell me more about how great he was
Yeah, this guy is awesome! Level 60 in full PVP set vs lev 56-58 in quest and dungeon gear.. WOOT! You da man.. The few lev 60 he does fight are noobs in dungeon gear, still fighting undead rather than the mage thats whooping their asses. It's easy to be awesome when you're EPIC
+gbalkam you really shouldn't comment on something you clearly have no clue about. Because from the sound of it you were not even playing the game in vanilla at the point this video was released....because if you were then you'd know he is not in full pvp gear...wasn't even in the game yet. In fact i believe this vid may of even been PRE bg's (yes bg's never use to exist early on).
you really didn't play the game during the period of time this video was made in did you?? you literally have no clue. "Geared pvp'ers" you think there was pvp gear when this video was made..... There wasn't even fuking bg's in the game yet. Zero clue.
I played on a vanilla pvp server. Nostralrius. It is as close to the original as can be compiled. I started playing in early BC, so much of it is the same. My point stand, a level 60 player in level 60 gear is not "Skillful" because they can kill leveling players in the start area of a new zone.
Fact is, like i said, going out in full lv60 pvp gear to a leveling zone and killing players that are lower level is hardly OP PvP. It makes no difference what xpac you are in..
I remember sitting at my friends house, he told me to watch this guy and I had never heard of WoW or knew nothing about it. I watched this video and fell in love instantly. With the return of classic I hope to see some more montages of this build. I know I'll be bringing it back.
i wonder if this guy knows how much of a legend he actually is. lol
2024 - Who is still coming back for the hits.
Still watching in 2019. Absolute legend this guy
2024 still watching lol, I quit video games but I’m using the music to build hero Ted instead hahaha. ❤
5 years from last post and still coming back for the beats. Thank you Otherguy. You are a legend.
This video has the feels. The music, the darkness of vanilla, and game play just bring it all back to when I was in my teens for years to come.
This video was super revolutionary back in 2005. I remember in those days, I never even thought of the utility of using Scorch instead of fireball in PVP (faster cast, easier to get off and be mobile). Warcraftmovies, yea those were the days.
my all time favorite wow video pvp ever... i made a mage back then just because of this guy... sorrowhill! I always remember otherguy when i walk throught sorrowhill
Ah those good old times when a 1k fireball was destroying your opponent.
Played my mage alt in vanilla solely based on this video. Always remembered the epic ending + song.
+Giles Same. Otherguy was the one who made me buy the game and play mage as my first character.
hope otherguy is back on a mage now that classic is out
Legendary
Songlist:
0:00 - Thrice - See you in the Shallows
2:31 - Goldfinger - Superman
5:40 - Guano Apes- Open Your Eyes
8:49 - Thrice - Stare At The Sun
This mage is the reason I found Thrice, honestly impeccable music taste.
I always come back to this video. One of the first PvP I watched back then and it introduced me to Guano Apes.
Same! I wonder where otherguy is now.
Otherguy shaped who I was as a mage. I would watch his videos over and over to learn from them. I knew them so well that I used them when I PvP'd and was very successful with it. The Sorrow Hill series. I almost forgotten about this legend.
Fuck man my 7th grade music taste comes from these videos. Im watching back this and Im 22 and I am crying back the times I saw these.
the pvp videos of vanilla that remain stuck in my mind...otherguy's drakedogs, and stuck's
And GRIM !
and Unbreakable
Dun matter if vanilla was broken, the game itself and the content in it was just awesome. And then came TBC, blew my friggin mind. So good.
Still remember this.. 15 years ago
Never gets old...
whenever I hear the first track, I know some alliance griefing is about to ensue
i still love to watch his videos from time to time even though i dont play wow for a long time now! He tought me a lot about pvp back on the days
this guy. best pvp mixed with the best music at this time. Never forget!
god of mage
This is the guy that made me make a mage in vanilla and play it as a main for years.
Otherguy let us know if you’re still out there!
this dude was way ahead of his time.
I'm not going to lie, world pvp meant a lot of ganking back then (and heck, I've never been that good at pvp so it wasn't always fun). But there was much more organised and equal grounds world pvp and that probably means that you're not going to see people play like this again.

back when wow was fun.
Broooo I didn't even buy Scorch until after I watched this video lmao.
Either mage and rogue pvp was the most fun to watch or I was not exposed to the right videos in vanilla (warcraftmovies, obviously).
Y'all rolling mages after seeing his videos, pff! I already was an Undead Mage from the get go. Seeing him using Scorch like that was a mind-blowing revelation and completely changed how I played. So good.
Annnnd we are back
a classic, a legend
I miss you Vanilla wow
ready for Classic? :P

a few months late... but I dont know what server you played on.. but 99% of the pvp mages used scorch :P
And using low level spells like frost bolt to kite
At least you could kill healers once upon a time. As a holy paladin on MoP it takes 4+ people to kill me. PvP was fun in BC, after that it sucked. At coming from someone who plays on a full blizzlike vanilla private server (Emerald Dream), vanilla was still the best. It's not just nostalgia, it really was the best.
Fiery on the 1h looked so fucking cool at the time.
This game was heaven at this time
2024 in korea
I gave up shaman and switched to mage because of this guy :)

Wow 2005!!!
he has more skills on his hotbar than a 2017 lvl 110 mage.
Because a lot of the skills has since then been removed. Granted, most were situational, but highly useful. The streamlining of each spec, making several abilities available in only certain specs has certainly made the class more accessible, but with less flavor and variety.

Talent trees contrary to popular opinion, do have variety in choices. Retail wow is god awful. Removing talents? Removing skill trees? Why? its the most fun part of the game.
Otherguy was the reason I abandoned my lvl 55 night elf hunter and made an undead mage -> my first level 60 was the mage.
THE LEGEND!!!
yeah this was why I played mage in vanilla.
vanilla were the glory days
Legendary
Sorry for errors, difficult to type on iPhone
I am not sure exactly (correct me if I am not), but this is first WoW pvp youtube video ever...
I'm honestly not sure about that. It may be true, however I would always go to warcraftmovies.com to find videos haha
TH-cam wasn't around when this video was created, and it certainly wasn't the first PVP video. PvP videos were made since the game was in Beta.
and also internet trolls are everywhere...
epic
Still best
wheres the cone of cold
if I remember correctly, the cone of cold was the talent back then, and not the spell you could learn from a trainer...
@Virility you sir, are correct. I miss vanilla so much =(
7:37 is that an unarmored epic mount? :O
Yes it is
7:15 did he poly morph a druid and he didnt shape shift out rofl
Back then you couldn't shapeshift out of polymorph effects. You would be immune while shapeshifted, but you couldn't break out if caught in caster form. This was changed pretty early on in Vanilla, though.
The paladin at 4:50 was absolute trash tbh, not sure why otherguy decided to include him in his video lmao
Every expansion after TBC was just to keep the game alive. 2 much shyt everywhere.
Did Otherguy really shoot himself in the head irl, or is that just some BS someone posted on that Thrice video for the first song? I hope is BS, if not RIP Otherguy, frigging legend.
+Nola213 Complete bullshit, brah. Don't trust the Internet.
Ivan Ivanov
glad to hear.
For Lordaeron!
Aleksander Panayotov kek
only few mages was using scorch back then, but he doesnt use cone of cold lol
maybe the pve mages that went pvp, but 99% of the pvp mages used scorch..
So classic
SPAM scorch SPAM SPAM
doesnt duel 1 lvl 60...id smurf on 59s n 8s too
@imbahnezz i completely agree

THE LEGEND!!!!
