Either Palmolive (green) or Dawn. I washed that car for years! When it was 10 years old, it still looked new and has the best paint of any Monte Carlo in the Detroit area! No rust and still shiney!

Friend of ours has a 20 year old Mercedes Convertible. She's owned it for 10 years and religiously washes it with Fairy Liquid (I guess a UK equivalent of Dawn) every 2 weeks. It looks great. She polishes it once a year with a cheap polish available in the supermarket.

Around 1983, a car magazine had an article comparing different car washing products. They used a measuring instrument called an ellipsometer, which can measure a thin film on a surface down to the angstrom level. This is the same order of magnitude as the size of atoms. They wanted to see which product left the least amount of residue after washing and rinsing. Guess what came out on top by a wide margin? Ivory liquid dishwashing detergent. And that result matched the much less scientific result by a company that cleaned cars for auto shows. They had been using Ivory liquid for years, based on their observations that it rinsed clean the best.

Dawn is PH neutral. If you have a good cermic sealant on your vehicle. You can use this as any type of wash. It will not degrade sealant. Now it will degrade the wax you have on top of your sealant. We in the show car community start out year out like this: We compound with fine grit every other year. Then we use a good cermic sealant. Then the day of the show we use a carnuba wax to really make the paint pop. Then before the next show we just wash with dawn and apply carnuba again at show. Dawn keeps the carnuba from building up on the cermic sealant and making dull.

What you really need to consider is that Dawn is very alkaline ( high PH ) and if you apply it under pressure and it gets into other parts of your car ( behind headlights and grills etc ) you may not be able to rinse it all out, so it sits on those surfaces and could cause problems. That being said, if you hand bomb it onto exterior surfaces to get a complete clean then rinse off, you should be good ot go for adding a good wax or ceramic. My two cents.

Question: Darren, I know this video is 4 years old but what are your thoughts of Using Dawn dishwasher soap to wash the Tesla cybertruck which is stainless steel? There is a lot of confusion on how to wash this vehicle made of stainless steel
I haven't tried it myself, but based on my experience with stainless steel appliances in my home and this dish soap in general, I would be willing to use it if I had a cyber truck.
It won't remove "any form protection whatsoever ". Dish soap won't remove the factory applied clear coat. More accurately: It will remove any form of after market, temporary paint protection.
Well... as my mom and dad washed their car with nothing but dawn dish soap on their Honda odyssey for a few years, it most definitely ruined their clear coat. That being said they also never used a wax or sealant to protect their van so that was most likely big contributing factor but 100% it can and will ruin bare clear coat. This I can attest to.
Thanks for this... there is currently a melted and then hardened piece of what we think is sliced cheddar cheese had on the windshield, melted onto hood... possibly thrown by the neighbor kids.... gonna try to gently get it off for hubby 🤞🤞 didn’t hear that type of grease mentioned 😂😂😅😳
Idc what anyone says u get a bucket U fill it up with water u put maybe a spoon full of dish soap and wash your car it will be fine… how u think normal ppl washed there cars back in the day with a hose a bucket a sponge and a towel to dry it up even more old school ppl used newspapers for the windows and the car always came out fine. I swear ppl just say no not to use it so u can buy other brand soaps or just car shampoo soaps w.e but back in the day when those things weren’t a thing ppl used some dishwashing soap and water not a lot of it ur not dumping half the bottle not even an quater of it just like a spoon full or two and thats it it will do the job
Over time, dish detergent will dull your finish. You may not see the abrasive compounds in dish detergent but its in there. Its made to scrub baked on crap from pans and pots! It WILL eventually swirl and dull your finish!
Thank you for all the expert posts. I have a question: What about after using Dawn grease remover/dishwashing soap on the vehicle to strip the wax along with the dust, dirt, grime deposits, can I apply a distilled petroleum based "wax" to replace the original manufacturer's application? I am not fond of natural or "beeswax" products in the market.🤔
Have heard. From several auto detailers not to as a regular option , because of the wax , and paint sealant and protectant perhaps even the clear coat something about UV protection on the paint you're not going to see damage right away that's what happened over time with repeated washes. I usually does run the vehicle through goo goo car wash.
I mean in a pinch and only once or twice is probably fine, if you’ve got a new car then I’m guessing based on the video you shouldn’t be using dawn soap more than a few times. I did only once cause I just didn’t want to have to drive over to the car wash. Also I’m pretty sure I can just order some basic car washing soap for later washes
Dawn Dish soap contains very effective surfactants which are designed to remove wax and oils, by breaking surface tension between two objects. When the wax layer is penetrated and your sponge/cloth enters, you essentially wipe away wax and make way for UV rays. Dawn doesn’t directly affect the paint, but it does remove the protective coating.
So what about a general purpose cleaner (that is not a dedicated degreaser like dish washer), like the stuff you can clean floors with? I want to use a plant based, Eco cleaner (phosphate free, accelerated biodegradable to prevent toxic runoff), and the car has a Glass Coating (chemically bonded to the paint, so doesn't strip away like a wax). No wax to strip off, and I don't want any wax on there. Thinking about adding a bit of Eco laundry detergent to get more foam.
Did you ever figure out an answer? We have well water, animals, and our sewers dump directly into the river. Even without those, I just do not want to damage soil.
Very informative! Thanks! My situation is - I want to apply a ceramic polish to my car - is it okay to apply it after using common wash-n-shine both in one type of car soaps and drying? OR would it be better just to dawn-soap it down, rinse, dry then apply the ceramic polish? I ordered some Nu Finish with Nu Finish scratch doctor - to use on my car and truck. Neither the car or truck will win any show awards but clean and shiny makes them look a lot better than just gathering dirt - LoL.
Yes I personally used dish soap to strip the wax off of my car before correcting my Paint. But it took multiple washes until the water no longer beaded off
I did that several times and turned out great for years to come but I agree after watching this video and reading comments; not all clearcoTs are the same at any point in time even if same manufacture. Dawn is more powerful than I’ve been assuming based on these comments!
I've been washing my car for over six years with dish soap, And it still looks as good as the day I bought it, however I clay bar my car every spring, wax my car three to four times a year with sealant. Dish soap isn't good for people who don't take care of the paint afterwards. I prefer dish soap because it's way better for the environment. It is 100% biodegradable. I've seen car paints destroyed by going to automatic car washes, that's much worst than using dish soap.
Doesn’t destroy the paint but if I want it to shine then it’s the worst choice. Used dish detergent for years until I started using wash wax made for clear coat. It’s good for filthy cars tires and wheels because of grease oil cutting power
Meguiar's Ultimate Fast Finish paint sealant offers maximum polymer protection in the convenience and ease of an aerosol spray. It's the bomb, imo. Trust me, it's great and EASY.
I use it on my foam cannon let it sit a for a few minutes then rinse it off.... and i dnt need to scrub the car the wheels i use soft brush but with a rise takes off mostly all... then blow dry ... easy
I got something on the side of my car that looks like coffee with cream. It's dried up but still tends to be sticky when I try to clean it. A typical drive thru car wash didn't help. What do you advise I use or do about it? Please and thank you.
Any detergent/ soap will gradually remove the wax or protectant from your car. The rate of removal depends on the detergent as well as the type of protectant used. BTW, I noticed everybody in your neighborhood has large lots. 😜
His car is white that’s why you don’t see the damage but I used dawn on my black car and there’s little white cracks on it now and I only used a little bit
It won't damage your car paint but it will strip any protection product you have on it! The main reason people are against it is the amount of salt (sodium chloride) that's in it.
Idk how people say this didn’t ruin their vehicles paint. My moms husband washes his car with it and that paint is faded as hell . Maybe it depends on the color but over time it removes the clear coat causing paint to fade. His vehicle is black. It use to be dark shiny black now it’s faded ashy black. So somebody lying.
Is it ok to add a pinch in my car soap to remove that tough grime off the lower side panels & front grill(bug removal)? Seem like there's always some road film on the lower door panels even after washing with a mitt with just the common car soaps.🤔
Ik you asked this awhile ago, but I’m hoping you still see this. have some dawn mixed with water in a spray bottle for trouble prone areas, but do this before you do your main wash with a quality soap that has wax, you do NOT want to mix the two as they counteract each other, so they both end up being useless.
@@katiewebster9190your method is good but they don't counter each other, so no problem with mixing it with car shampoo. In fact I would recommend it for the added lubricants in the car soap to avoid scratches.
@@matsudakodo if the soap you are using has waxes in it (mine does) it will counteract the dawn it’s almost like mixing baking soda and vinegar you end up with nothing. If your soap doesn’t have waxes in it I don’t know but I would still use them separately and let the detergents do their work on their own like they were designed to.
IMO, 99.5% of people will be perfectly happy using this product and just wax the car once or twice a year. It's only the .5% of car detail geeks that are going to be bothered by this.

Thanks for getting to the point right away.. earned my sub👌🏼
So would this be good to use to clean if im going to put on a wax afterwards?
Yes
Dawn soap will clean your car better than any car soap and it will not remove your wax use it in a foam cannon do not hand wash with dawn
I wash my car with dishwashing soap, one or two times a year when I ran out of car soap
So this would be ideal on a new car that I plan to spray Wax afterwards? Thanks
Exactly.
Over time, dish detergent will dull your finish. You may not see the abrasive compounds in dish detergent but its in there. Its made to scrub baked on crap from pans and pots! It WILL eventually swirl and dull your finish!
So combine it with a cheap lubricating car soap
Dawn doesn't work that way. There are no abrasives in it whatsoever. More likely your rags have the abrasives embedded in them. Your welcome. Lol
@@ganjalfcreamcorn8438you are correct and that guy is definitely 100% wrong
@@Da-King-of-Swing thanks 👍
Thanks! This makes more sense and reasonable.
Use a cleaner wax.
Just recoat your car, and not with spray wax use pastes those are a lot better and last twice as long ! 🤘🏽
No they don’t and those increase odds of scratching your car in application
Have heard. From several auto detailers not to as a regular option , because of the wax , and paint sealant and protectant perhaps even the clear coat something about UV protection on the paint you're not going to see damage right away that's what happened over time with repeated washes. I usually does run the vehicle through goo goo car wash.
That's because it would put car dealerships out of business as well as manufacturers of car shampoos
Water can damage paint, IF you use it INCORRECTLY.
What about diluting it with water for interior of the car?
Mix dawn dishsoap with vinegar and water it's a good natural carpet cleaner
I have a professionally ceramic coated car, with Turtle wax sealants. Can I remove the sealants without harming the ceramic coating?
Yes
34 years using it to wash my cars
Enough said 🏆
I mean in a pinch and only once or twice is probably fine, if you’ve got a new car then I’m guessing based on the video you shouldn’t be using dawn soap more than a few times.
Dawn is probably perfect for people who are ceramic coated
You'd be amazed how ineffective wax is at blocking UV rays. Most companies no longer market UV protection on their bottles
Uv protection comes from the clear coat
wax does fuck all to protect paint from UV
But it took multiple washes until the water no longer beaded off
That sorted it out for me. Thank You I did not know all this. Very useful.
So can you wash your car with Dawn soap and then apply a Ceramic coating such as Graphene Advanced coating from Adams?
Especially if the brushes aren't cleaned out (full of trapped dirt pebbles in there).
It will damage oil base latex paint pluse it will remove pained numbers from kitchen appliances
Doesn’t destroy the paint but if I want it to shine then it’s the worst choice. Used dish detergent for years until I started using wash wax made for clear coat. It’s good for filthy cars tires and wheels because of grease oil cutting power
I could be smarter if I do dish soap for all in one product like dish washing, wash car to strip anything and degreaser
Great video thank you using it one time with ceramic cost was fine second time I think it was gone lol
I'm your 1000. Subscriber!:D
4:23 What protection would you use after washing with dawn? Thanks
Sounds like tree sap. A cotton ball with rubbing alcohol will dissolve it
Or tar remover (solvent)
What about a matte finish?
So it does eat clear coat?
Will it still remove wax or sealent without using your wash mit
Yes.
Thank you… just need it once ☺️
What about removing water spots left by calcium or lime? Dawn promises a spot-free dry, so I assume it removes the water spots?
No. Those type of mineral deposits will still be there. You can use vinegar to remove mineral deposits in most cases.
You need a descaler (low pH). Dish soap can't remove them
great tips thank you for sharing
Any detergent/ soap will gradually remove the wax or protectant from your car. The rate of removal depends on the detergent as well as the type of protectant used.
BTW, I noticed everybody in your neighborhood has large lots. 😜
That’s standard in America .
Water just by itself will eventually remove everything too. Cars are purposely built to wear out.
Do people really share rain gutters?
Dawn is great for breaking down old wax and grit but I wouldn’t use it as maintenance
just say yes or no
This video was helpful thank you so much!!!!!😢
His car is white that’s why you don’t see the damage but I used dawn on my black car and there’s little white cracks on it now and I only used a little bit
It won't damage your car paint but it will strip any protection product you have on it! The main reason people are against it is the amount of salt (sodium chloride) that's in it.
Perfect explanation thank you
Can I use dawn to clean a tractor trailer to get all the grease out or it will damage my pain?
U can use it cause it is used to clean the metal utensils
@@yourfavcamrybut those are stainless steel.
Breaking it down! Great video!
@@katiewebster9190 are waxes that acidic though?
@@matsudakodo it has nothing to do with the acidity of the wax it’s that Dawn is a degreaser and it breaks down waxes/oils
I use very little it does t hurt car paint will pull waxed off
Bravo! Perfect info shared here.
I always wash my car with dawn. No damage yet and leaves it shinny
Am I wrong ?
Thanks for the video!
will it remove water stains on your vehicle?
No
IMO, 99.5% of people will be perfectly happy using this product and just wax the car once or twice a year. It's only the .5% of car detail geeks that are going to be bothered by this.
You are 100% correct Jose
