      I WISH I COULD!!!!
      I had to put myself on ban from the library, it's such a shame!! But I just cannot be trusted to read these books 《and only these books》 in the allotted time. Then it runs over and you think, well, in for a penny, in for a pound, the fee is going to max out at £6/book anyway, so I might as well just get to them when I get to them... and then wait until I have £18 spare to return 3 books.
      Every three years I keep telling myself I've grown as a person and I could handle it now... so far I have not been correct.
      If I could return them and then escape with no new ones, then I could use Libby (can't use something like that with overdue books on your account...), the problem is I can't do that.

    Reading through the comments, I realised how lucky I've been to live in Singapore, where there is literally a library in each neighbourhood. People don't really patronise the community library near my house for books as much as they do for the study spaces...but I feel grateful to have a library just 10 minutes from my home. They are really gems. Because of this video, I am determined to use the library more than what I've been doing instead of buying books at the first whim. Thank you Jack!

      even though I stay in Singapore too, more often than not I can spend 5 hours searching for the books on my TBR, just to leave empty-handed since the books are all on loan. If you're very lucky, like me, and can physically go to another local public library and sign up to _their_ library and then you can borrow from their collection! Though your access might be limited to some of the digital collections; I signed up for the library in the next council over (they're also the next suburb over) but Overdrive's licence (which provides Libby) only allows access for residents of that council (which must have been a more modern restriction, it definitely wasn't the case in 2012), so I was SOL for that because my home council doesn't subscribe to Libby. :/
      (though to be fair Australia's pretty lucky as our public library system hasn't been completely decimated and most local councils (both urban "city councils" and "municipal councils", and the "shire councils" which are anywhere from peri-urban to rural) will have one for their Local Government Area that they cover; _and_ I live in an urban area so I have the luxury of choice; _and& not only are (almost) all the Sydney-region public libraries in an interlibrary loan network thing coordinated by the State Library of NSW so that they don't charge each other for ILL (the patrons' fee is another matter) but most do allow for free membership for out-of-area patrons)
      Anyway, that's how I ended up with, uh, *counts cards* 8 local library cards (not including cards for my State Library and the National Library)! Though all but three are almost certainly expired and two of those no-longer-valid ones were affected by the great council amalgamations of 2016; with the library branch that one of them was attached to being removed from its original council and being instead attached to my home one, and another council ceasing to exist entirely.

    • @PurpleShift42
      @PurpleShift42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But yeah, if you have your home council library and you can't go outside that for whatever reason, interlibrary loans and making a purchase request are definitely ways to go :)

    • @mac8697
      @mac8697 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PurpleShift42 that's insanely complicated rip. here in Spain you can access every library in your town with your neighborhood library card (including the State Library!), as well as ask for interlibrary loans & access the online database from your whole region. So, for example, in Australia, you could access every library in Sydney with just one card, as well as have access to the New South Wales online database and ask for interlibrary loans from any library in that state.

    • @d.lan3y
      @d.lan3y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, if people consistently ask for books they don't have, that actually supports the library! It gives them proof that there is a demand for those books and helps them know which ones to buy.

    IF you're a US resident, Brooklyn Public Library offers a completely electronic library card (used through Libby) to all US people with access to their huge catalogue for $50 a year, so if you can save up and read a ton of audiobooks and ebooks during that year, then it can be cost effective! Libby (formerly Overdrive) saved me during bed rest when I was pregnant. Also, make sure you use the suspend hold feature, so you can reserve a bunch of books you want to read, and then activate the hold once you’re ready to read them (and when you’re at the head of the line).
    And, while I haven’t actually done this, I’ve heard from others that you can find library card numbers online to use in the app, which is helpful for people who don’t have access to a great library to lend from. If you’re a California resident, you can also get a library card from any city in CA, so you can have a bunch of different libraries to check; I make a habit of getting cards from cities we visit on vacation.

    Not saying that this is a good way to get free/cheap books, I was just commenting on the fact you mentioned the complete works of Shakespeare in this video. 😂

    the app hoopla is similar to libby as well! oil don’t know if it works with every library card, but it has a lot of options! and, whenever you travel somewhere, if you have extra free time you can always get a library card in another city and get access to their catalogue of ebooks and audiobooks through either libby or their own library apps! for example, i live in colorado but did a semester in nyc and now even though i can’t physically borrow from the nypl anymore, i still have access to the nypl digital catalogue through their app!

    For those in not-USA or insert-other-country-without-developed-public-resources or people in areas with bad selections: You can cheat if you have a friend or a relative in an area with a great library, use their address! Most places only require a name, DOB, and an address, and then you access e-books online through apps like Libby! It's pretty uninvasive besides needing to know where they live. Always ask first just in case they already have a card or it causes complications :)

    For anyone in Ireland - if you are a member of your local library their online catalogue allows you to search the entire Irish public library network and request any book be brought to your own local library for you to collect. They can take a week or two to arrive but it means even if your local library is small you still have access to a big collection!

    I volunteer pricing books at a charity shop and end almost every shift buying a little haul for myself! Charity shops will usually be the cheapest places to buy books as we check the prices against places like Abebooks and Amazon and make our prices slightly cheaper than that. Just requires a bit more effort/patience to find what you're looking for :)

    In my area in Italy theres a really good public library system (free) but not many young people use it. With Covid, getting books from the library got hard (the books had to stay in quarantaine for 2 weeks before you could get them!) so I gave the digital library a try. I didn't even know it existed before then. Works exactly like the hard copy library. You get e-books (of very current books) for 2-3 weeks, through the library app. Then they disappear.
    So people, check if your local library has a digital app!!
