Thank you. You make it really easy for me to like my GH5+Sig 18-35 combo that if I need to get the job done, it can be done. From my experience with using NEAT Video on GH5 footage, when using V-Log, because the noise is more visible in the footage, you can actually salvage footage from the entire ISO range of the GH5 with excellent results. Sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but it's true. Give it a try...
if you use NEAT video you have to wait at least 1 month for rendering varius clips. NEAT is excellent denoiser but for a clip of 60 sec it take more than 3 hours to render in a good PC.
Excellent test! Low light shooting is always about "lenses" and about more actual "light". It's not about electronig gain and higher amounts of noise reduction. If you look at the DPReview studio scene app/tool, you can casily see that the GH5 and GH5-S have the EXACT,....and I do mean EXACT same raw sensor noise performance when testing the same ISO's. This means the image sensors see the exact same thing in raw output. The GH5-S does have very advanced noise reduction in it's image assembly and video processing. But,...the God's honest truth is that the GH5 and GH5-S have the EXACT same sensor signal to noise ratio! They also have the EXACT same dynamic range as well.

Hi I am torn between GH5 & GH5S. In fact I purchased and returned a GH5S unopened 3 weeks back thinking I was rushing and should do some more research. Price difference is only £400 but mainly for music videos I wanted IBIS but might use steady cam with GH5S now. GH5S with lens IS is it good enough as I like shooting handheld through viewfinder. I'v preordered BMPCC 4K which might have exact same Sony dual iso sensor like GH5S. Would you really recommend GH5S mainly for paid music videos and to practice narrative filmmaking or GH5 with IBIS would be better or enough if the image qualities are very similar. Is it only low light performance that make the S better or the image quality colour and DR etc is also better than GH5? How's the autofocus and other fixes after latest 2.3 updates? Kindly advice. Such a late reply on my part, sorry! The channel fell by the wayside as I shot freelance stuff this year! Did you get the BMPCC4K? How do you like it? It looks massive lined up next to other cameras, but I've heard nothing but good stuff about them. If I hadn't just bought a Sony A7iii I probably would have got one of those this year. Oh well, maybe I'll pick one up next year?
Regards from Stockholm! Really good analysis of both cameras. I have seen suggestions for using the Nikon 50mm F1.4 together with the Metabones XL 0.64 speedbooster. Is that a viable alternative? The stabilisation on the GH5 is so good. How effective, on the other hand, are Panasonic lenses with built in lens stabilisation with the Gh5S for handheld filming?
(2:15) What am I not understanding about this statement. The GH5 “ABSOLUTELY” can shoot low light “4K 60p 420 8Bit 150mbps” in MP4 or MOV, with the right lenses. Anything between 1600 - 6400 ISO is often low light to many, at a quarter of FF sensor size, the 35mm equivalent 6400 - 25,600 ISO. There is a crop factor to consider for ISO too. Which in this case is times four. Apparently, I am also a few years late to point this egregious error out. I sure hope 33K viewers fact checked this claim… …
great content here.... Good job. Whats the lowest ISO you would shot with on the interior??? I think something went wrong with my camera... I a bright room I barely can see something on the screen with F.28 Iso 100-400 and shutter speed 125 when recording in 60fps... Image start showing up at 1600ISO. I dont think it worked that way before :/
It depends on the interior lighting situation really. A well lit interior I could expect to shoot around iso 100-400 probably with a fairly wide aperture, maybe 400-800 with a smaller aperture. In a room lit only by a table lamp or something I'd expect having to reach further to 1600-3200 iso probably. It's really guesswork though, since there's no standard for "interior" or "exterior" lighting.
As an owner of a GH5 and a GH5s, I'm loving my GH5S. I've been shooting with anamorphic adapters and full frame lenses with boosters. Although the GH5 has 6K with some limitations, shooting with an aperture at 4-5.6 the GH5S helps in most lighting conditions even at 4K. The IBIS is great and it works great. However, the GH5S' Dual Native ISO lets me have 12-14 stops of dynamic range @400, 800 and 2500,5000 ISOs!!!! No Other Camera does this under $5000! That makes me think of selling the GH5 for a 2nd GH5S. If these cameras came out at the same time or if I was considering buying a GH camera, I would Buy the S!
Steve Holt - I'm thinking of buying one with some IS Lenses. My video style is either on a tripod or hand held for 3 to 4 seconds - any movement is usually on a tripod fluid head or my small rat rig slider (looking at a edelkrone sliderone pro).
Mark Shirley Yeah with IS and simply moving smooth you can get the same shoots as the GH5. You do have to plan your movement more than when you have IBIS.
Mark Shirley I only have 1 M43 lens with AF. It seems to work but I very very rarely use it. IMO the M43 glass is way way over priced for how slow they're. For instance the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 is very slow compared to a Full frame 24-70 and a speed booster. If the made the 12-35 and f.95 then it would at least be on par and justify the price. However with the 179° trick it does seem to be usable. In my testing it worked pretty well. I did use the touch to focus on the G7. It worked. But again you pay a whole lot for that option.

This was hugely helpful (still in 2020)! Great side by side! I think the difference is staggering, both from a noise as well as dynamic range perspective. Also detail on lights and rain were amazingly different. Overall, the GH5s has a much more cinematic feel (not to abuse a stereotype). The difference is now (March 2020) $500 ($1,299 vs $1,799). Still a lot and many folks I am sure will gladly pass as the GH5 is still GREAT. However, given the cost for good lenses and other unnecessary accoutrements 😊 $500 seems to disappear quickly when looking at the big picture. For me, looking at the BMPCC4K vs. GH5 and the fact that I will be doing a great amount of low light videography the GH5s tilted the scales in favor of Panasonic.

The GH5s is a game changer
Nice test! Actually not all that many real world tests of the two cameras. Interesting that the S has a stop/stop and a half better sensitivity and the same DR. Considering how close the two cameras are, plus the announcement of the new Black Magic Pocket Cam, the $2500 list price for the GH5s seems a bit out of wack. Esp as you can get a new GH5 for $1700-ish if you look around.
I'm very curious about the Black magic personally, if it delivers on HALF of what it claims to I think it will put some real pressure on the GH line, and then there's the A7s iii... still unannounced. I think short of doing a LOT of low light shooting, or need 240fps 1080 most people would be better off just sticking to a GH5 and some fast lenses for the cost savings. Aside from my night testing I haven't personally found a lot of need for the extra sensitivity of the S just yet, but it's only a few months old now so maybe that'll change? I'm hoping to get a BMPCC4k to test out when it's released too.
Sorry for the late reply, they look identical in good lighting generally. No difference other than a touch more dynamic range and better light sensitivity on the GH5s.
Yeah I think it is personally, some people are hyper critical of noise in shadows, but the second ISO circuit kicks over at 2500 ISO IIRC so you're really only like 1 click above that lowest point on the second circuit, which is like being at 640 ISO on the lower 400-2500 circuit. In general my A7iii clobbers even the GH5s in terms of low light with imperceptible noise, but it only shoots 100 Mbps and doesn't have 4k60, etc, making the GH5s what I still reach for more often for low light shooting. I felt like things started to get noticeable at 6400 and iffy at 12800, but still mostly usable.
With IS lenses I'd say it's not a problem to shoot photos handheld, shooting video handheld with a 100+ mm lens is painful. The 100-400 I shot with in the video has a very nice IS system on it but without the IBIS of the GH5 its not really usable handheld with a GH5s but can be with a GH5. On a tripod you wouldn't have much of a problem with or without an IS lens on the GH5s, on a gimbal I'm still not sure yet. I'll be doing more tests soon with the two cameras on gimbals to show what the IBIS present and absent does to a well balanced Ronin and Zhiyun tech crane setup.
This is my issue with the GH5s. You lose IBIS which is in my opinion the primary reason for buying a GH5 in favour for better low light performance. But hang on, get virtually any Sony and not only do you get to absolutely wipe the floor with any Panasonic camera but you also get fantastic auto focus. It would have been so easy for Panasonic to clean up here. All they had to do was leave IBIS in the GH5s and it would have been a no brainer. The low light wouldn't have been better than the Sony but it would have been good enough. But then there's the AF which for me and others, it's pretty important.
I notice really minor differences depending on lens and angle, but IDK if I'm making them up or not. The GH5s seems to offer maybe a hair more in standard color profile? I intend to shoot some more controlled Standard, Cinelike D and LOG footage from both and make a quick comparison soon to try and settle what I'm seeing.
Man, g85 and gh5 are great but low light isn't a small, niche thing. It's almost the only relevant thing for me which renders the qualities of these cameras moot. I'm getting an s5.
I moved into S cams also, an S1H and S1 were my primary cams, but I did try an S5. I liked it plenty too but it had smaller batteries than the other S cams and worse recording limits so it was the first S cam to go.
@@mrcmultimedia1498 Yeah that makes sense. I wouldn't mind uncropped 4k/10bit slowmotion but i think i can live with it. 4k 24fps looks beautiful from what i've seen. Other cameras have other cons for me - size, price, ergonomics. The s5 + 20-60 + 50mm bundle is appealing at less than a gh6 camera house. My cameras are usually connected to a power source anyway, and with the s5 i can use usb-c and powerbanks for that (if i'm not mistaken). As a bonus i could get excited about stills again, that won't ever happen with an mft. I just use my iphone for stills, last "real" stills camera i had was a canon 20d and before that analogue ones.
not really. the sensor has pixal binning which allows it to be superior to low light vs the Gh5. that is why the GH5s does not take high megapixel pictures compared to the GH5. The GH5s was made for cinematography.
@@stevenfries7032 > This every guy that read the advt copy of GH5s knows. But in real life does it show its effects ? i dont think so. Except for a very astute eye, the final results seem to be the same. Like MMO Archives says.
@@mgr5550 Consider I own both the GH5 and the GH5S(use the GH5 for its IBIS, day time shooting) I have tested both out in at night. It would have been so easy for Panasonic to clean up here. All they had to do was leave IBIS in the GH5s and it would have been a no brainer. The low light wouldn't have been better than the Sony but it would have been good enough. But then there's the AF which for me and others, it's pretty important.
On the gh5 if your shooting in low light shoot in cinelike d not v log.
Less noise that way? I only shot standard for the comparison and since I bought the v log function I tend to only shoot seriously in it.
On the GH5s when I have it set to manual ISO i.e iso 6400 and when I start filming the display shows ISO A (Auto). Why is this?
I think if gh5s has a better dynamic range?
I notice really minor differences depending on lens and angle, but IDK if I'm making them up or not. The GH5s seems to offer maybe a hair more in standard color profile? I intend to shoot some more controlled Standard, Cinelike D and LOG footage from both and make a quick comparison soon to try and settle what I'm seeing.
Cool! In that case, I am waiting for a comparison :) Thank you for your answer
You should do these test on v log
I will make another video when I get the time showing the comparison in vlog, thanks for the suggestion!
You shouldn't be doing camera reviews
you should be writing comedy gold
Thats why i use 0.95 Voigtlanders Noktons for my GH5
agreed, GH5 good till 3200, GH5s good till 12800
It's Link from GMM in the future
there's really no seable difference between the 2 cameras, the gh5s basically gives it more processing speed power to reduce the noise
not really. the sensor has pixal binning which allows it to be superior to low light vs the Gh5. that is why the GH5s does not take high megapixel pictures compared to the GH5.
GH5s is by far superior in low light and you dont need an astute eye to see it. This is the best example of GH5 vis GH5s, and I had very similar results comparing both of mine. You arent kidding anyone. check out the link. th-cam.com/video/EozTfVi9Ab4/w-d-xo.html
@@mgr5550 and I would also like to point out that not only does the GH5s have pixel binning to make it more sensitive to light; but it also has a larger sensor too. hence, why the 5s doesnt have IBIS for that reason in that model.
Gh5s camera with me but very hanging camera not a cuwek played photo very bed camera
