Panasonic GH5S Hands-On Field Test

  • We were surprised when Panasonic announced the GH5S shortly after the GH5 rocked the video world. Boasting the return of the multi-aspect sensor and hugely improved low light performance, but lacking the built in stabilizer, the GH5S is an interesting camera. Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake take a look to see who this new camera is for.

    The reason there seems to be so much uproar about lack of IBIS on the GH5S is because the REVIEWERS are all TH-cam bloggers.

      Yes, I agree and electronic stabilizers gimbals are easily accessible these days. The IBIS even when combined with a lens with stabilization still cannot handle actual run-and-gun video shooting...

    As far as the size of the sensor goes and the loss of in-body image stabilization, Panasonic didn't really have a choice. Sony makes this sensor (STARVIS IMX294 variant) this larger size and that is the only way that Panasonic and others could could purchase it. We are seeing other cameras now hitting the market now with this sensor too and they all have to deal with this same "odd" MFT footprint. It really was designed to provide the absolute maximum video performance that MFT could possibly provide. This sensor was designed to literally pack and use up every tiny millimeter of performance that this mount could hold without wasting ANY space whatsoever.(The GH5 uses the Sony IMX272 chip which is the "traditional" MFT sensor size) BlackMagic is claiming 13 stops with theirs. Cant wait to see the first GH5-S vs BlackMagic Pocket 4k comparison. Nice video guys!

    I bought a GH5 in January and then returned it for the GH5s. I'm very happy with my decision. The low light is great and the colors are fantastic. Coming from the GH4 I felt the GH5 wasn't really worth the upgrade, but the GH5s is definitely worth it.

      I have a gimbal. I use the Zhiyun Crane Plus. The stabilization was decent on the GH5, but even with that I would have still been using the gimbal for weddings and just about anything cool I want to shoot. I don't miss the IBIS.

    Chris nails the fundamental flaw of the gh5s at minute 9:45--it belongs on set with "gimbals" and tripods and "lights." If you're in a controlled enough situation to have tripod or tracks or a full glidecam style rig, you're probably also in a situation where you have control over the light. Most of the times indie filmmakers are in a low light situation they may not be able to have a camera stabilizing rig either. Panny says they crippled the gh5s so that shows like Grand Tour could mount their c and d cameras to their cars--but those situations almost never require low light sensitivity. No, I think Panasonic just couldn't figure out a tech problem like heat distribution, then used car shows as a face-saving excuse.

    Very good insight. Your channels great. I just bought into the Panasonic family. We purchased the Panasonic AG-DVX200-4k . This appears to be the perfect little brother to it. I was going for the Sony A7Siii but they were out of stock. This makes more sense. I’d like to stay consistent with the brands to make post production a much smoother process.
    Thank you and any tips you might offer are surely in some of your other videos. You have a new subscriber 👍🏽

    I bought a GH5S for two reasons: reduced noise at slower apertures and a smaller crop factor with video. This way, I can get wide shots that keep everything in focus, yet having the blacks jump around less when lighting isn't great. It doesn't fill the need of a photographer or vlogger really. While the noise may be lower, the noise pixels are larger, and I see that as an issue in my cropped photos. For vlogging, the thing is too big anyways; might as well just use an iPhone imo.
    TH-camrs should really love this camera -- although primarily if they are doing tripod work, and generally if indoors. Auto-focus isn't great, but you can make it work usually.

    How stable is footage on GH5S with a gimble, compared to GH5? I'm interested in shooting landscape and wildlife video for a professional project and need something that wont drive me nuts in post with stabilization issues. Also, is the only real advantage of in-body stabilization if you are shooting by hand, or does that in-body stabilization in GH5 also make gimble shooting smoother? Thanks and great review

    Not being able to decide between nor quite justify the cost of either the GH5 or GH5S, I bought a GH4 and Zhiyun Crane v2 with Olympus native glass from you guys a month ago and am so far liking it.
    Having never had an IBIS camera before I was concerned with distortion with the lens and sensor being out of sync as well as the IBIS resisting any camera movement like a pan. I was under the impression that you wouldn't want to use IBIS alongside a gimbal, so I figured that the GH4 would be better than a G85 for several things and might help decide between the GH5 and GH5S if and when I'd want to buy a second camera body.

    This was a really helpful video. I'm currently looking to upgrade from my canon t5i for more professional shoots like live events, music videos, and shorts and have been looking into the Canon 7D mark ii and the Canon EOS R for a mirrorless option. I was told the GH5S is even better though. My man hesitation is the price difference and the additional costs that would go into a lens adapter. What are your thoughts on the two?

    @TheCameraStoveTv Did you happen to notice any horizontal noise when shooting in VFR mode? I believe there is a camera bug that creates this terrible horizontal noise and a color shift towards green at all frame rates above 60fps. Even worse, I'm seeing unpleasant noise in the darks in 24P as well, even when shooting 10-bit at native ISO. Due to these issues I am really regretting my GH5s purchase and am hoping that Panasonic will find a fix soon...

    After the GH5 came out, high-end movie studios kept buying the GH4 and not upgrading their existing GH4 cameras to the new GH5. As it turned out, the IBIS created problems for them, even when they turned it off. That's one reason why the GH5s doesn't have it.

    Great review, but if you really want a camera that is superior in low light for a great price it will be the Sony a7sIII and it is only because the sensor is larger. But it all depends on what you want from the camera. You get the camera that suite your needs. The interesting question here is, will Panasonic now focus on that organic sensor, or release new cameras down the line.
    I do not think Sony will release a new camera for a while, perhaps some APS-C camera but that too will just be a minor upgrade. Who knows, they might not think it is worth doing. It all depends on the market, and I suspect the demand for the a7iii and a7sIII will be crazy so they might focus on that. Anyway we will have to wait and see.
    Nice video as always.

      Frankly, since the GH5s is only a video camera, that looks like a mirrorless cam, it lost its purpose as soon as the $ 1300 new Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4K cam was announced. With today's computers and if your primarily interest is video, why wouldn't you buy the Black Magic that is probably as good in low light than the GH5s and shoots RAW? I'm afraid at $2500 the GH5s was killed in the egg.

    • @AveMcree
      @AveMcree 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree with the black magic cam but a7iii doesn't come close outside of AF. The a7iii still has that terrible screen, no time lapse, no 4k 60fps, 4K crops, no 8bit, no 240fps 1080p slow motion, etc. A lot of the raw test only focus on things the a7iii excels.

    • @AllThingsFilm1

      Jesus Christ, you have no idea what you're talking about. Higher end? The A73 cannot shoot 10-bit. So, no, your "higher end" claim is ridiculously exaggerated. The A73 is only a game changer for vlogging cameras. Not for cinematic cameras like the GH5 and GH5s. Go back to your Sony fan boy safe space.

    I still see the GH5 being a better all around camera that will accommodate 80-90% of most shooting scenarios.. except low light unless you are using speedboosters etc. Also the GH5 is slightly cheaper. I shoot mainly with the viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 (which is an f1.2 on this setup) and I get great results. Shadow details can be tricky in really low light however using VLOG-L and 10-bit 4:2:2 I get good results and can recover details enough. I think it is better to use the correct tool for the job. If you shoot mostly in dark situations and serious performance is needed, wait for the Sony A7S3 and adapt lenses to it (perhaps even rent one if you need to). Its really going to depend on your budget, your lens investment and shooting conditions. The GH5S is a decent choice however if you have the extra cash and need a B cam to the GH5. I wouldn't buy it however as the A cam as its not flexible enough especially if you are doing more than just video and need photo modes or are traveling with it. The IBIS on the GH5 still comes in handy for more run and gun situations and if you can't carry a tripod around but just a camera bag, its a better option.

    I don't think the lack of IBIS is anything to worry about even for run-n-gunners as long as they use a gimbal. But this camera's life in its intended market is limited now that we know the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is coming, and what it's capable of doing - using the same sensor as this camera, at about half the price - including the full Resolve Studio.
    Panasonic, you have until September to add the ability to completely turn off in-camera NR and sharpening, and add raw signal out through the HDMI. Or else have to massively reduce the price.

    If its more suitable to sets, where you've got everything, why would someone (with the budget of a set) choose this camera over any other standard cinema cameras (even the C200-300)? It just makes no sense. However, I would agree that this camera is for the independent film maker that makes short films or commercials on a decent (not cinema) budget and doesn't really care about vlogging or youtube stuff. It is for field use, but for someone with a limited budget or someone just starting out. On a full blown set where you can afford everything else, it is just plain stupid to bring in this camera over any cinema (even low end cinema) cameras.
    P.S.: For people watching this or any other review, forget the IBIS and all that bullshit if you anyway shoot anything other than youtube videos. Yeah its a great feature but do you really need it? Keep in mind when you watch a review on youtube, it's reviewed by people who mostly do youtubing with their cameras. They are not doing anything wrong in the reviews. It's just that their perspective is almost always pretty much biased to the youtube side. But for someone who is into short films, commercials, etc., you have to look at the features from your point of view. Do you really need that IBIS if you have a gimbal? Even if you didn't have a gimbal, will the IBIS hold up for your follow shots, or creative camera moves? Do you really need that low light capability if you have a lighting crew? More importantly what you need is exposure tools like zebras, accessories support, and the most important thing is reliability. Most youtubers vlog in their native blocks. If the camera stops working, they can just fix the problem in whatever days it takes and redo the video. On a commercial project, if your camera dies and you have no solution, your client will torture you to death! Thus, reliability comes before everything else on a set. Low light, IBIS, etc. are all additional luxury features that you don't really need on a set.

    Panasonic GH5S the price is really too high considering the new arrival of the new models of the competitors - the price battle is started with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and Sony A7 III - so good price and good quality this is the future battle They sholdn'nt give us good price and bad quality because now we know everything about technology .

    Low and behold Blackmagic has destroyed the GH5S with its newly announced Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with dat 12bit RAW 4K 60p at $1.3K. Given it doesn't come out until September, but you know what to expect now.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Narek Avetisyan they not the same cameras its as different as the c200 is to the ursa mini. Also you're going to have to rig put the pocket camera alot more than the gh5s. The pocket cameras autofocus is worst than the gh5s, the low light while improved, won't be better than the gh5s.
      I'm excited for the pocket camera 4k, but I think people are expecting this to be a run and gun camera when its a cinema camera first and foremost, hense the name.

    • @genjii931
      @genjii931 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They are much more similar to each other than the C200 is to the UMP. For one, they use the same sensor (just with different active areas), same mount, etc. The low light should be at least as good as the GH5s, plus the GH5s doesn't let you completely turn off in-camera NR or sharpening, meaning the picture will never be as good - at any ISO. Not to mention 12-bit raw over 10-bit 4:2:2 limited Vlog means grading will be waaay nicer with P4K footage.
      Panasonic's next move SHOULD be to release a firmware update to allow the complete disabling of in-camera NR & sharpening, plus allow a raw signal through the HDMI port to allow Atomos to do their coversion to ProRes Raw externally. That would stem the Black Tide of September(tm). Whether they WILL is, of course, yet to be seen. That $2,500 price isn't helping matters, either. Even the GH5 is $700 more expensive, but at least it has IBIS for those who need it. For the $1205 extra the GH5s costs over the P4K, I'd buy a nice gimbal and a lens and call it a day.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      genjii931 1. its not the same sensor. Blackmagic themselves have said this is brand new sensor made from scratch. 2. The ursa and c200 also have the same mount so I dont know why is this an argument. 3. As I mentioned the low light wont be as good as the GH5s because A) it tops out when the GH5s starts to fall apart. And B) the lower 2nd iso in log/flat profile means noise will gain show faster.
      Raw is great but im sure 60%-80% of the people looking at this camera won't even shoot in raw because they are not use to the workflow and not realize it requires alot of work. (This is exactly what happen with the original pocket camera).
      Again I am very excited for this camera, but I think people need to realize this is a camera for a certain audience. This will be a cult classic, but many people who complained about the GH5s will not see any benefit of this camera because the things they complained on the GH5s is either the same or worse on the P4k

      Lucky Never yes because it offers 4k60 with 10 bit 4:2:2 output and 4k/4k DCI Internal at 10 bit 4:2:2 with a ton of pro video tools.
      A7III lacks these but has exceptional AF and is a stop better in low light. So your choice.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zaber Ansary that depends on the kind of shooter you are. One is design to be more run amd gun, while the other is to be treared like a cinema camera and needs more accessories and asks you to put in the work in post.
      Both are great cameras it all comes down to what camera fits your needs and more importantly, the needs to get you paid. Because if your looking at these more as a hobbyist, then neither.

    • @nordfresse
      @nordfresse 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Nether of them has IBIS, so nether is an optimal run and gun camera thereby. Yes the gh5s has c-af that somehow seems to work now, but its far from the best in the industrie. So you may want to focus manually anyway. Soundwise the bmpcc 4k is actually better equiped out of the box. So the main difference is that you have a large screen on one and a smaller flipout screen plus a viewfinder on the other. Most importantly though, blackmagic gives you more options with better codecs and 4k 60p. You dont have to use raw, prores is easy enough to handle and still has almost twice the bitrate of panasonics 10 bit 422 all-i codec.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      nordfresse ibis has no bearring on run and gun and idk why people are now making them a requirement run and gun doesnt mean "camera only", it simply is do you have the things to go amd get the shot. The canon cinema line of cameras dont have ibis and they are certainly run amd gun cameras (excluding the c700 series).
      Autofocus doesnt need to be the best it just needs to work and in 80% of normal shooting situations it does. 80% is still better than none.

      For what use? BMPCC 4K has no autofocus, no articulating screen, and shorter battery life. BM is is cinema camera and the 5s tries to still provide something for RnG, vlogging, and grab and go crowd. Let's wait and see what actual experience is when the BM is released. It does look compelling.

    Had to laugh when these guys bitch about the lack of on board sensor stabilization. Any full pro camera won't have a stabilized sensor ... that's what gimbals and tripods are for. But some lenses also have the optical stabilization so what's the big deal.

    Can't hear that excuse "low light" vs "Ibis" anymore. Truth of the matter is, Panasonic was unable to pull it off in one body. I don't reward premature releases. I rather reward Olympus (I'm not a fan boy, but I certainly am in that regard. They don't release "Betas")
