DCF is expensive. I really don't think you could buy the materials Joe is using and make it yourself for less. The walls are 32$ a yard and the floor is 33.50 and on and on. I'm a tarp guy. I do own a Duplex though and love it when sleeping two. I considered doing the tarp myself but each time I figured it up it was only about 40 difference. I'm no Joe Brewer with a sewing machine and just bought one from someone who knows how to do it right. It actually seems like a pretty small margin for such a high quality item. Great review Maria.

I bought the Plexamid beta model earlier this year. I done to hikes with it, one was 1200km (heysen trail South Australia) and the other 460km Larapinta trail going up and back (northern territory Australia - about 1000miles total . only trouble I have had was it blowing over in strong winds. happened 4 times. I did find if I made the tie outs really short so the wind could not get under it it did help but of course you loose ventilation this way. meet another hiker who had both his carbon fibre rods in the top section snap though. so far mine has been fine. I too love the space and weight my only concern is if I take it over seas to do a long through hike will it last the distance.
DCF gear is a seller's market! Maybe it'll eventually trickle down into the "civilian" market, and we'll be buying 13oz. DCF tents at Big 5 and Amazon.
I just bought my friend’s old plexamid. It’s been through the pct, but still keeps the rain out. I used it the other day in the snow. My floor was on a little plateau of snow so i had less room than usual, but it was still roomy. My old MSR carbon reflex 1 was nice but had about 2/3 the floor space and I couldnt sit up inside it. My plexamid felt like a two person tent in comparison. Lol
The Plexamid is NOT not the lightest 1 person tent on the market...It weighs 391g. The Six Moons Designs Gatewood Cape is the lightest single person tent on the market at the moment, at only 310g! You do have to supply your own ground sheet, but a Polycro one will only weigh about 60g, so even then it will be lighter than the Plexamid. It is available in a stealthy camo green too, perfect for wild camping, and you can also wear the cape when it's raining, saving on having to carry the additional weight of a rain jacket and/ or trousers. Happy days! The Gatewood cape is also very cheap (about $150), so the with the huge amount of money you save from not buying the Plexamid you can buy other ultralight gear to reduced your pack weight further, or just use it to have a great time with. :)
Hey Cotezi, thanks for taking the time to make this vid! My thoughts on the Plexamid pretty much align with yours (I posted a video about a month ago or so and drew the same conclusions). I love the one-pole design. Never owned the Solplex, but I've been using the Hexamid since 2013. The Plexamid is way bigger than the Hexamid inside (need to do a comparison vid one of these days!). My only concern with the Plexamid are the struts, as you mention. On that note, it appears that ZPacks is redesigning the peak as we speak while it is offline. Joe also sent me some updated stays but I haven't installed them yet--still waiting for the original ones to break. I've only used the shelter a handful of times (getting lazy these days staying in AT shelters), but I hope to get some more use out of it soon--trying for a Wonderland Trail walk-up permit in a week or so. Keep us updated on whether your struts break! :) Also...when you gonna do the Colorado Trail? You are in Denver now right? I plan to go back to CO next year and finish (redo?) the trail.

I sent an e-mail and they said that it will be re-released in about a month. The interesting thing is that they just took off the Beta one (this Cotezi's video review).
Yeah I got an email saying the beta is gone. The thin line slipped in the wind. They have to redesign the top struts which often snap on the regular one. I really want them to fix this too as I want to get one!
@@thequomp33 my Beta was fine in the wind, but I guess I didn't get to use it too much because the carbon fiber rods snapped on the third night. I sent it in for repairs because the rods ripped through the DCF. I received my repaired tent with the replacement rods already snapped. And with additional holes caused by the rods. Packed it back up and sent it back about three weeks ago. I'm still waiting for it to get back.
Always enjoy your videos and music. Hiked with a Eureka Cobra for years, but it was too heavy compared to choices now and really just a tube. I like the Plexamid. Thank you for the review.
Great vid! I envy you americans, for having those DCF tents! i’m currently using the Msr Carbon Reflex, but it looks like it no way compares to the zpacks when we talk space, and effeciency! The space os very tight in it! Takes forever to setup. And i really don’t trust the poles! The weight is OK and... I hope the DCF trend is comming to europe soon!
How are your carbon rods holding up? I’ve heard of them snapping, which makes me nervous to make the leap and get one. I love my Duplex so much! But it’s slightly older and 21 oz. I’d love to shave another 7 oz off!!
Benjamin Reyes thanks for sharing! That’s a good point about tensioning. I definitely learned over time with my Duplex that i was tensioning too much at the beginning, so I’ve gotten gentler with my adjustments on the tent. I also heard zpacks is just selling them with the new struts now. Guess I just need to plan another thru-hike to justify buying one! 😂
Reporting back: carbon rods are still holding up! Had some condensation on tent walls but carried a tiny microfiber towel to wipe off in the mornings and it worked great.

Yeah one of the lines for me was actually upside down (in the lock) so I just had to undo it and feed it through properly. Weird! They haven't gotten twisted though.
Zpacks finally re-released the Plexamid the other day with improvements to the peak/rods roof system. Going to buy a Plexamid. Anyways, luv ur channel, your well-spoken and enjoyable to listen too. Hope you start publishing more videos~

I have the Plexamid Beta and a Duplex Camo. The Plexamid broke on me twice. I'm currently witing for it to get back to me. Hopefully third time is a charm, cause I love my Plexamid. But if it breaks again I think it'll be grounds for divorce... 😰
I understand! Yeah they're currently working very hard to make improvements/upgrades I hear. Either way the Duplex is pretty good choice and beats all other 2-person options out there any way!

Do you think two people could sleep in there? I know they have the duplex but just curious if you think it’s even possible. I fit four people on my Jeep Patriot so my level comfortability is pretty low LOL
I have fit two people (me including) in my Plexamid :) My friend is a pretty tiny person though. She's like 5' 1" and 105 lbs. You could def make it work in a pinch just probably won't be the most comfortable but it's doable for sure.
I’m using the big Agnes fly creek UL HV 1 platinum. So basically a one person fly creek but in the lighter material. I really like the weight and easy of set up. I was using a six moons design lunar solo before. I also liked that until the one really really bad thunder storm I was in. The wind was crazy and the rain was coming in from all directions and I got soaked. Partly my fault for where I set up but mostly the ever changing winds blowing rain in. If you can guess I was set up in a fairly exposed area. Anyways I really like the fly creek besides how small it is. Unless I’m going super minimal then I can’t even keep everything inside the tent with me. Kind sucks in that regard. Also the way they have the platinum vestibule entrance kinda sucks. Unlike the normal fly creek it’s a little different and makes it much harder to get in an out of it. If it’s not currently raining then I set everything up inside and then put the rain fly on if I think I need it. Then get in and turn around in. It’s defiantly not the type of tent that you sit in around camp. It’s a tent to hike all day and then sleep in and keep going. The small profile was nice in the Sierras this year because if there was a tiny spot of dry ground I could squeeze into it. Or if I was camping on snow, which was most of the time, then I only had to stomp a smaller area down. I could often be the first one in my tent in my group because of this. In my group we had two zpacks triplex, a duplex, a MSR two person, and then a Nemo one person as well.
IDK why they changed the entry on the platinum fly creeks.... so weird right?? I sold my UL 2 platinum for that reason. Didn't think it would be an issue when I initially bought it but it was such a hassle! One trip and I was like NOPE I'm done. Plus I missed a side entry. Glad it's still working for you though!
Hi, Cool vid as always. I got a duplex and I want to get a plex but they are sold out. I’d like to shed weight as much as I can. Love the duplex though. I plan to make the switch of running with a single pole than duos. That’s pretty much why I want the plexamid camo edition. Thanks for the vid, I’m sure am looking forward.
seanae86 for years when I had a heavier pack I always used two poles. When I got lighter I still used two poles. Then I got out on the PCT and still used two poles for a good amount of time. Then my elbows started hurting so I would only use the poles on steep uphills and downhills. Then I switched to one pole and carry one pole on my pack. That way I could switch back on forth so my elbows wouldn’t hurt from overuse. Now I only ever use one pole and most of the time I’m just carrying it in my hand. Mostly just for extra stability and speed on hills and downhills. On my last hike there was maybe a 5 minute period that I wished I had two poles for. And that was just because it was steep downhill and really rocky. Never going back to two poles if I can help it
I've never had the Duplex to compare it to, just the solplex. I would say as long as you let the storm doors somewhat open on cooler nights so inside moisture doesn't build up you should be fine.
I’m on the PCT with a duplex. After more than 100 nights, condensation has only been an issue less than 10 nights or so. Like Cotezi says, leave a door open - it helps a lot. But sometimes due to weather or just the need for privacy, I end up closing up the doors. Even when condensation is bad, just stay away from the tent walls and the water will run down the wall and drip down outside the bathtub floor. The tent is really well designed that way. Looks their smaller tents are too. Double walled tents have condensation issues too. I’ve spent just as much effort in them to stay away from the walls as I have in my duplex.
I'm a fan of the mesh tent design with rain fly, such as Big Agnes and Nemo. They're cooler in summer. Strange that nobody makes that style of tent out of dyneema fabric.

Yeah I've heard that too. I'll just have to put it through a few hundred more miles to find out! One tip though, when inserting the trekking pole into the pocket on the roof of the tent I always put the handle side of the pole up, as opposed to the bottom sharp point of the pole. Thanks!
FYI it's no big deal if the rods break. One of mine broke with no warning while pitching. So I took the other one out as well, pitched it, and it was fine. If it's windy you would need to stake out all the guy points to keep the walls from flapping (the roof rods help keep the walls taut); but you would do that in high wind anyway. It took ZPacks only a few days to get replacement rods to me for free. Also, I asked ZPacks directly about this and they said there were no downsides to not having the rods in place from a safety standpoint - just slightly less headroom (I didn't even notice a difference) and like I said above, need to use 8-10 guyouts to keep the walls tight.
@@WildlandExplorer mine broke on my third night. Problem is, the struts didn't just snap; they poked holes and caused a small gash in the DCF. I sent it in for repair. They replaced the struts with some white material, nit sure if it was carbon fiber. But again, the struts were already snapped, and poked more holes in the DCF. I didn't even ser up the tent. Sent it back once again, and it's been two and a half weeks since. I love the tent, but I'm not sure I'll be keeping it if it snaps again. I have the Beta version, and the tension was just as good as my Duplex Camo. I wish they'd offered a Beta Kit for the Duplex as well.
More than one person has looked at me quizzically while I'm explaining how my Plexamid tent is made of "DTF". That's what they think I'm saying and it usually ends in an awkward conversation. Can we go back to calling it Cuben yet.

Hey Cortezi. Nice one. I was never a fan of the Solplex it always seemed a compromised design, small, required 2 trekking poles and you could not use that jolly big vestibule covered space on the other side of the door. I always thought they should of put a zip in there so you could unzip from inside the tent and access that unused vestibule area. I like the Plexamid I have, but you are right - it needs a nice flat piece of ground to pitch well, otherwise its a wonky tent setup. Love the yellow melanzzana top again. Blue Boy
There's a Big Agnes that's 10 oz... for $700 lol. It's lighter than the Plexamid... but in my opinion the Plexamid is better (higher density of Cuban Fiber).
5 FIDDY?! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!! It's very light, tho. 420g! That's impressive...... and it's also a reason to partake in 420 activities! I have the Six Moon Design old Skyscape or something. It weights less than 800g and it costs about $300 and it's not the best quality. I'm definitely robbing a bank soon .
@Iron Gamer I can personally recommend the MSR Hubba nx solo. Fantastic 3 season free standing tent with lots of head room. Weighs 1.2kg and packs down quite small. Large vestibule perfect for storing shoes or bags. Kept me dry for six months on my round trip from Land's End to John O Groats and back again. Stood up to some pretty stormy conditions. Great tent for the single man!
@Iron Gamer I recently picked up this for my ultra lightweight bike/back packing but I'm yet to use it so I cannot give you a review .www.terra-nova.co.uk/all-tents/1-man-tents/laser-pulse-1-tent/ It is 500g and has a doubled sided wall and frame construction. Probably one of the lightest real tents out there.
@Iron Gamer personally my opinion is to carry a bit more weight and go with the msr. If you are doing serious hiking and out in the elements light weight comes with a sacrifice in structural durability and when your hiking in the middle of no where and that storm hits, which it eventually will. You will wish you had the stronger tent. If you are going somewhere for a short period in good weather then feel free to go for the ultra lightweight tent but I think people need to use thier own common sense. People could get seriously hurt or worse if they can't protect themselves from the elements for prolonged periods.
@Iron Gamer z packs is a single wall construction so you are going to have less warmth and more condensation and don't forget you will have to pay import tax shipping the tent over from America.

My friend's Plexamid carbon fiber roof crossmember thing broke when he set it up in windy conditions. That made for a long night.

So far so good but I've only pitched it a handful of times. Will be testing it pretty soon now in Washington on the PCT. Will report back!

I want to get one of these trekking pole tents but the condensation from single wall tents keep me from switching.

seanae86 for years when I had a heavier pack I always used two poles. When I got lighter I still used two poles. Then I got out on the PCT and still used two poles for a good amount of time. Then my elbows started hurting so I would only use the poles on steep uphills and downhills. Then I switched to one pole and carry one pole on my pack. That way I could switch back on forth so my elbows wouldn’t hurt from overuse. Now I only ever use one pole and most of the time I’m just carrying it in my hand. Mostly just for extra stability and speed on hills and downhills. On my last hike there was maybe a 5 minute period that I wished I had two poles for. And that was just because it was steep downhill and really rocky. Never going back to two poles if I can help it
How does the Plexamid compare to the Duplex when it comes to condensation? Is condensation a concern or not really?
I would say it's the same since it's the same material. But I don't own one so I can't confirm.
I've never had the Duplex to compare it to, just the solplex. I would say as long as you let the storm doors somewhat open on cooler nights so inside moisture doesn't build up you should be fine.
I’m on the PCT with a duplex. After more than 100 nights, condensation has only been an issue less than 10 nights or so. Like Cotezi says, leave a door open - it helps a lot. But sometimes due to weather or just the need for privacy, I end up closing up the doors. Even when condensation is bad, just stay away from the tent walls and the water will run down the wall and drip down outside the bathtub floor. The tent is really well designed that way. Looks their smaller tents are too.
Double walled tents have condensation issues too. I’ve spent just as much effort in them to stay away from the walls as I have in my duplex.

8 stakes! I love the MSR carbon core ones.
I'm a fan of the mesh tent design with rain fly, such as Big Agnes and Nemo. They're cooler in summer. Strange that nobody makes that style of tent out of dyneema fabric.

Yeah I've heard that too. I'll just have to put it through a few hundred more miles to find out! One tip though, when inserting the trekking pole into the pocket on the roof of the tent I always put the handle side of the pole up, as opposed to the bottom sharp point of the pole.

FYI it's no big deal if the rods break. One of mine broke with no warning while pitching. So I took the other one out as well, pitched it, and it was fine. If it's windy you would need to stake out all the guy points to keep the walls from flapping (the roof rods help keep the walls taut); but you would do that in high wind anyway. It took ZPacks only a few days to get replacement rods to me for free. Also, I asked ZPacks directly about this and they said there were no downsides to not having the rods in place from a safety standpoint - just slightly less headroom (I didn't even notice a difference) and like I said above, need to use 8-10 guyouts to keep the walls tight.
@@WildlandExplorer mine broke on my third night. Problem is, the struts didn't just snap; they poked holes and caused a small gash in the DCF. I sent it in for repair. They replaced the struts with some white material, nit sure if it was carbon fiber. But again, the struts were already snapped, and poked more holes in the DCF. I didn't even ser up the tent. Sent it back once again, and it's been two and a half weeks since. I love the tent, but I'm not sure I'll be keeping it if it snaps again. I have the Beta version, and the tension was just as good as my Duplex Camo. I wish they'd offered a Beta Kit for the Duplex as well.
I have the duplex at the moment and live it defanatly wanting to get the pleximid at some point
More than one person has looked at me quizzically while I'm explaining how my Plexamid tent is made of "DTF". That's what they think I'm saying and it usually ends in an awkward conversation. Can we go back to calling it Cuben yet.

Hey Cortezi. Nice one. I was never a fan of the Solplex it always seemed a compromised design, small, required 2 trekking poles and you could not use that jolly big vestibule covered space on the other side of the door. I always thought they should of put a zip in there so you could unzip from inside the tent and access that unused vestibule area. I like the Plexamid I have, but you are right - it needs a nice flat piece of ground to pitch well, otherwise its a wonky tent setup. Love the yellow melanzzana top again. Blue Boy

There's a Big Agnes that's 10 oz... for $700 lol. It's lighter than the Plexamid... but in my opinion the Plexamid is better (higher density of Cuban Fiber).

@Iron Gamer I can personally recommend the MSR Hubba nx solo. Fantastic 3 season free standing tent with lots of head room. Weighs 1.2kg and packs down quite small. Large vestibule perfect for storing shoes or bags. Kept me dry for six months on my round trip from Land's End to John O Groats and back again. Stood up to some pretty stormy conditions. Great tent for the single man!

It is 500g and has a doubled sided wall and frame construction. Probably one of the lightest real tents out there.
@Iron Gamer personally my opinion is to carry a bit more weight and go with the msr. If you are doing serious hiking and out in the elements light weight comes with a sacrifice in structural durability and when your hiking in the middle of no where and that storm hits, which it eventually will. You will wish you had the stronger tent. If you are going somewhere for a short period in good weather then feel free to go for the ultra lightweight tent but I think people need to use thier own common sense. People could get seriously hurt or worse if they can't protect themselves from the elements for prolonged periods.
@Iron Gamer z packs is a single wall construction so you are going to have less warmth and more condensation and don't forget you will have to pay import tax shipping the tent over from America.
