Played Wasteland 2 like 3 times, and Wasteland 3 exactly 4 times (4th time included all of the DLCs). In terms of difficulty I'd say they are about the same, but W3 does allow for some crazy builds unlike 2 which makes even the hardest fights on hardest difficulty trivial. Other than that 2 has more serious tone, while 3 takes itself less seriously and has more colour literally and figuratively speaking. Both games are incredible imo.

Going through W3 right now and I gotta say, W2 did it better in almost every single way for me. I have some major issues with how you're allowed to handle Angela Deth in W3, on top of thinking she is very poorly written in W3.

WL2 is a masterpiece IMHO. There are three areas that warrant nominations for the best of all time in cRPG history - Rail Nomads, Valley of the Titans and the Hollywood/Temple area complex. They are noteworthy as being extremely difficult bordering on impossible to get a "best outcome" first time blind. They are so complex that they were plagued by multiple sequencing and contradiction bugs on release, the depth and complexity of the narrative and number of choices presented crashing into the open world design. Mercifully these have been resolved now with the DC edition. The game shines in terms of narrative, atmosphere and role playing. The combat is not the main draw although encounters can be be interesting and challenging on max dif and there is an ever present sense of real danger.

    • @majorfallacy5926
      @majorfallacy5926 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Narrative is one thing, sadly the gameplay got so dull and repetitive by the time I got to the first of these areas (rail nomads) that I can't be bothered to ever finish them. Defusing an entire minefield for 20 minutes wasn't particularly thrilling, but you have to do it if you don't want the AI to blow itself up. It doesn't help that the stat system is so poorly balanced that initiative is really all that matters, and that cover is constantly bugged.
Wasteland 3 improves on that a lot though

I am thinking that W2 is strictly the better game for me. It's harder, I like the writing more, but it's soundtrack can't hold a candle to how W3's soundtrack is implemented. The cut in covers of these old gospel songs and the like was wonderful. I have kinda always liked the more grounded in our timeline approach that Wasteland offers compared to Fallout and Wasteland 3 feels more like Fallout, Steel towns tech level is way too much, just tech in general in W3 felt more CoD Sci-fi Shooter than I'd like. Wasteland 2 hits that perfect middle ground of classic Wasteland and a game that a normal person could possibly play.

Combat is not gonna get remotely as 'wacky' and diverse as Wasteland 3. You've seen most of it propably in terms of weapons and abilities allready. I think Wasteland 3 tried to ape the success of the Divinity Games, Wasteland 2 on the other hand deliberately keeps things more grounded, and leans considerably more towards simulator and survival genres. There are very few active abilities ( "spells" ) and munition is a LOT rarer but in return more lethal. Combat in WL2 is a lot more about resource management, depending on how far you're in the game you'll might have allready noticed that having even a single full magazine is not a given, and your limited back pack space means you'll have to think what you'll bring with you on your expeditions.
Personally, I hade a dedicated mule, a character that was really terrible at fighting, didn't even carry a real weapon, but had a lot of inventory space and was tasked with re-supplying the other party members in firefights. It was fun and refreshing playing around such a support / utility character.

One fun thing about W2 is that it exports your characters at the end of the game so you essentially can get a NG+ mode by importing your end game squad when starting a new game. This allows you to go through and do any quests you missed or messed up from maybe not having enough skill and play the game on supreme jerk without it actually being as tough. . You can do this over and over as every time you hit the end game it'll export your characters at that level. I was really hoping they'd add this feature to W3 but it doesn't look like they will.

I have been playing this currently for about 100 hours, and I love it. They really do respect the original game big time in terms of lore and jokes. **Oh, and the game design as such is really good: I mean the systems, UI, user-friendly** (I played WL1 before, so...)
    - As for skills, yes, you really have to spread them across the party and specialize (eg. only one of my characters levels Perception and Demolition. I gave each character two types of weapons, trying to spread ammo types). Even with Safecracking and Lockpicking 10, you can fail, so you really need to pump those specialized skills.

Forgot to mention: I play on Ranger difficulty, which feels like the default. It is sometimes challenging, but easy with basic tactics. The higher difficulty can be annoying as you need to min-max too much.

A very cool game. The choices you take during the campaign influence directly your own team composition, for example.
Too long for me though: after the 1st half, with tiredness, and with the complicity of some real life keeping me from gaming for a couple of weeks, I abandoned it.
The 3rd game of the series was better for me, it felt less chore-like in most aspects.

While Wasteland 3 is a great game (with terribly mediocre DLCs), I actually found myself enjoying Wasteland 2 more. I'm a sucker for the desert aesthetic and just loved the characters/locations. Something about it just felt a little more raw (as you mentioned the artsyle plays a role here) and interesting than the more mainstream feel of 3. WL2 is a weird one for me. It felt joyless. I played all of the main fallout games. I'm a younger person, so I don't think nostalgia has much to do with it. Every time I play it, I end up missing the style and world of Fallout. I know it's unfair to judge a game by it's more well known sister franchise, but it's not intentional. I tried Wasteland 2 about 5 times on my PC. However a Gamepass issue with saves (also wiped out 15 hours of Mutant Year Zero) meant it was unplayable.
I tried the Xbox version but the Camera angle was too unwieldy - not that these should really be console games.

As someone who came to WL2 without all the nostalgia and reverence people hold for the original, I honestly thought this game was kind of naff.
None of the combat mechanics or encounters are particularly memorable after all this time. I'm left with faint impressions of feeling like there wasn't much wiggleroom in terms of practical party compositions, and that combat was a little clunky. In terms of story and pacing, the ending I got was particularly unsatisfactory and left me feeling like some of the agency had been removed from my in-game decisions. It wasn't until later I found out that the story's "point-of-no-return" happens way earlier than I expected.
That said, I'm reallly looking forward to the full review. It sounds like my experience with this game might not have been representative. (But hey, what else is new? 😆)

Wasteland 2 directors cut is actually a pretty good game. The initial game wasn't the best, and not all what inXile promised, but they eventually delivered on their promise. Wasteland 2 though holds a very special place in my heart, not because the game is something special, because it's not all that special. It holds a special place because it literally started the whole 'kickstarted old school rpg' thing. Before wasteland 2, the whole rpg landscape had grown incredible stale, and brian fargo, in his kickstarter video for wasteland 2, managed to channel his frustrations out on how the publishers had treated him, because he wanted to build an oldskool game, and everyone had turned him down. They had looked at the success of the double fine kickstarter, and they managed to become successful in making the kickstarter, afterwards pillars of eternity followed suit with obsidian, torment tides of numenera, divinity original sin, and a whole lot of the amazing cprg developers managed to enter, and was reinvigorated, partly due to brian fargo's influence, and that original kickstarter pitch video, which is still worth a watch to this day. InXile is a company I am very grateful for, because it has Brian fargo, who has been partly responsible for so many good games over the years, and had a hugely positive impact on the whole gaming industry, as he was the former ceo of interplay productions. I would argue that without wasteland 2, there would not have been the same interest in pillars of eternity, owlcat may not have made pathfinder, divinity might not have happened in the way it did. We have a lot to be thankful for here.

Must be played at supreme jerk difficulty, applies to 3 as well, especially at later points if you want any challenge. Alternatively you can drop tactics and have a pure melee run on hard, although that is popular among jerks as well, for the challenge. Interested to see what you think of Wasteland 2 and what that makes you think of the developments they made in 3. A small segment for updated thoughts on 3 after playing 2 would be something worth hearing.

At least pre directors cut edition, the first half is great, second half the quality drops. I think backers had access only to the first half, which is why it was more polished.
Its also extremely obvious where the game is practically cut in two.
However, things have hopefully changed in the directors cut.

Wasteland 2 is a bit of a masterpiece, if you got to play it when they were over and done with patches.
I actually loved Wasteland 2 more than Wasteland 3. The third one felt shallow in many ways compared to the second.

Just playing on and off my second play through on Director's Cut. Once completed release Wasteland 2. Haven't noticed that much differences at least now playing at Canyon of Titan. Well maybe there's couple places where there might have been tweaked possibility to proceed with bit different route (meaning skills), but nothing radical. I liked W2, but one problem still is evident for new comers that it's possible to try to create allrounder squad which will absolutely result in huge difficulty spike which isn't revealed until quite late on. On my first try I made pretty much the worst possible squad and I actually felt that I had to restart game after I suppose plus 20h into game. I really liked the game, but I would've hoped bit more depth into combat itself. Just bit more "X-com" into it and game would've been absolutely legendary title.

Only game I ever backed on kickstarter. I was so desperate for a fallout style world I got into this and this game is what got me into CRPG and XCom style games.

I played it on console and it was a really pitiful experience, full of bugs, it would crash often to the console OS while saving

the game itself is great, but the pacing is a bit slower than it needed to be. imo it dragged on a bit. especially if you want to collect everything. it gets only worse, when you want to experience the alternate decisions. i also ran into a few bugs that locked me out of decisions/quests.

just a heads up, theres a bug thats in the game that makes it so you cant enter the main the base bunker. i would suggest to save every time youre about to win a mission just in case. dont save with the same save file. always different. you might need to backtrack a butt load

Great game. I've played through it completely three times, and before W3 came out it was the go-to post-apocolyptic experience. I've had the GOG version installed on my machine since 2015 and have never uninstalled it since then. Still play it for 10-20 hours or so about once a year.

It's a solid game but my autism just can't accept the catastrophic mischaracterization of weapons.
Browning m2 chambered as a 5.56 pea shooter being the most heinous example

oh boy. i do wish you good luck :D. i really enjoyed w2 directors cut. especially because it allowed me to have 2 melees (1 fist weapons, 1 blade weapons) in my party and they were beasts :D. but the reason i do wish you good luck is, i had a game breaking bug that i couldnt fix in the second half of the game....all progress lost. because even reloading earlier saves didn't help. (playyed on ps4 though).
