    JefferyJ, I want to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. They gave me the confidence to buy a 20W fiber laser to mark tools we make for my business. I was able to get it up and running and make great marks within a few hours. Your videos and test files made that possible. Thank you for taking the time to great and post them, the information is so valuable. Thank you Sami

    There is a button on the top of the head that enables the focusing lasers, there are two of them and when they become a single dot on the thing you want to etch its in focus :) They may not always be adjusted correctly/damaged in shipping but mine came setup correctly.

      Hi ... On flat surface both dots are connecting at same place once we place any ring on that area it is not connecting while rotating top head. How to know the exact engrave area of that. After pressing F1 it is showing on ring but after pressing F2 nothing engraved on that area. Means what to do for that. Please explain

    If you get an open version like this I'd strongly recommend making an enclosed frame out of extrusion or similar and wearing fiber safe glasses when marking. We did this with ours and will be fitting a reed switch connected to a stop on the frame door.
    Apparently when you get hit by one of these in the eyes it feels like a hair dryer without the heat, and that's it. Vision gone instantly and permanently, unlike a CO2. I can't stress enough, don't use these without decent eye protection.
    Our 30 watt gives a 2mm deep engrave in aluminium in 5 or 6 hours. Much longer on steel as you have to leave it to cool periodically otherwise it will warp.

    There should be an attachment to help you find focal length easily. Like two lasers attached to either side of that head aimed to meet at focal length for the lens used.
    Otherwise, adjusting this focus every time the height of item being laser-marked changes will become tedious.

    Hello Jeffery, thanks for the video, good demo. Although I already have a Co2 laser, I am just starting to look at fibre lasers to expand capabilities a bit. This has been helpful. I like the datum's that you have set up, but could I also suggest something that I used many years ago , on a YAG laser ( very expensive, with little options) , our company was manufacturing hundreds of different parts, which all had to be laser etched. This created a bottleneck at the laser, and fixture making to hold many parts also held us up. The solution was to locate a LEGO build base down on the table( MARKING AREA 110 MM x 110MM ) . The operators then built their own fixtures from LEGO bricks, simple snapping them down on the fixed base. Lego bricks are extremely accurate with 8 mm centres, The operators become very articulate, and were all up and running marking arrays of components very quickly. Just a thought.

    eBay sellers are either tied into or contracted sellers to shift a producer of the lasers they sell Amazon’s, Aliexpress etc are all basically the same. There are some drop seller type who have the online “store” on most if not all of the above, they sell the laser…the supplier or maker ships it out. So no matter the seller or the store, the laser is …usually…a quality product with factory support. A snag can apply where countries have a returns collector/ and hold new stock…returns can be “restored to factory a new batch of the inclusions and it can be sold as new!

    Thank you for this video. I was about to buy one but I just learned the output of NOT collimated and that means it is not good for 3D objects. Thanks for saving me $3000 (although those things are a bit cheaper here in China thanks to the booming smartphone repair applications to delaminate LCD and touch panels, but $2000 is still a fairly good chunk of money).

    • @bskull3232
      @bskull3232 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinhughes4722 Depending on what you are after. For just marking, you can buy one of those cheapest $1000 lasers with AOM Q-switched laser source, cheapest galvo (usually Sino Galvo branded) and the Lite version of EZCAD control card and software. I actually ended buying one constructed this way, at a higher price because it uses all best components but the paper specs are not very good, essentially I paid for the quality, not the performance. One step up, you can get those so called MOPA lasers, which allows you to control pulse width, which is very important for precisely controlling laser dose. This is needed if you need to engrave color on steel (by controlling the energy, thus controlling the localized heat, thus controlling the thickness of oxidation film, this controlling the interference wavelength and color), or to engrave black on aluminum, or to engrave pure white on plastic. This will run you from $2500 to much much higher, depending on the brand and power of the laser and galvo, plus building quality. The one I'm building form scratch has its laser source alone to be $3500+ (JPT gen 7, 30W, MOPA), and a $1500 German galvo scanner, and custom control card and power architecture. I'm building it for nano material processing, so cost is not a factor. For marking use, this is highly overkill, and I think for beginner if you don't care about color or steel/color on titanium, just get those $1000~$2000 Q-switched fiber lasers.

    Easy Cad definitely does inches and mm. Depending on the version, the setting should be either in the "grid" settings, or next to the "grid" pulldown.
    Also, find out the focal distance, cut a piece of scrap to that distance, and use that as your height adjustment.

    • @jefferyj
      @jefferyj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you able to export a sketch as a DXF from CAD software like Fusion 360 or Solidworks with your CAD document unit set as inches, then import that DXF into EzCad with proper scaling? This is where I ran into trouble. I can manually scale things in EzCad to inches, or I can set the system parameters to inches and draw directly in EzCad, but I can't successfully import an 'inch' DXF into EzCad without having to scale.
      For example: If I export a 1 inch square sketch as a DXF, then bring that into EzCad as a vector file while my EzCad system is in inches, it will come in as 0.039"x0.039" which seems like it's reading the DXF dimensions as MM regardless of the system settings and the DXF document settings.
      It's not a big deal, but if you can tell me what I'm missing that'd be great. I'm using version 2.14.2.

      I'd probably get a 30w if I were buying again today, but to be honest, I really haven't needed it. Most of my marking is on anodized aluminum which requires very little power. The advantage of a more powerful laser is the ability to hit depths faster.

    Hi Jeffery, I watched a few of your videos now, Thank you. For my purposes, I think a 50w raycus fiber laser is probably what I need. I want to use it for aluminium but also carbon fiber composite. I note you've also tried the fiber laser with some different kinds of plastics. I have found a few people on youtube demonstrating the fiber laser cutting thin pieces of carbon fiber composite and wondering if you've ever tried this? Since I will be working with quite a bit of carbon fiber this is something I'd be really keen to use it with. I suspect it will do it, but probably needs quite a bit of trial and error and optimising to get a decent marking and cutting through 1mm. I'm not too worried about the quality of the cut finish as I can tidy that up. The main advantage is the ability to cut and mark the carbon fiber with much greater control offered by the fiber laser. If you've got any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear from you.

    Yes, a great vid! But I am wondering what brand this machine. BTW, I believe the 'split' designation refers to using two 10 watt lasers that are merged together to achieve 20 watts. I was looking at a laser system today that looked the same and seemed to be American made, but this is Chinese made?

    I am amazed there is no optical shielding. What is the wavelength? Do you wear glasses? Does any beam reflect off of materials and poke holes in your... uhmmm.. anything?

  • @StraightShot247
    @StraightShot247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What do you need an enclosure for? I'm told its to filter your sight when you look at the laser directly? Or is there a different purpose for the enclosure? Thanks.

    • @jefferyj
      @jefferyj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mark a lot of anodized aluminum and it creates a significant amount of dust that gets all over the workspace and computer. The enclosure contains this dust and allows me to run an inline fan to extract fumes/dust. I wear glasses for protection, but some people do build enclosures with an appropriate type of plastic to provide protection.

    I know you showed using a digital caliper to determine the focal length but is there a more precise method? I ask because I have so hardware I'd like to make and unfortunately they are quite expensive so I don't have one I can spare for testing purposes. so could I maybe get a piece of wood or something and make it the exact height as the part, test it and then run the real part? Also what is the Maximum height of the part it can cut? Could I do something that is say 10" High? thanks for the informative video.

    Great video. Is the style laser capable of marking on curved surfaces? In other words if you had a dome protruding from the surface the software compensate?

    • @jefferyj
      @jefferyj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a feature in the software that can account for curvature, but it doesn't adjust the focal point of the laser. Some people use a larger lens like a 300x300 to get a wider marking angle so it's more forgiving on curved surfaces. This is often done to avoid using a rotary when marking cups.

    • @jefferyj

    Nifty machine for the price. Sadly these all have working areas too small for my applications, would need a hybrid system on an X-Y table somehow. Have you not made yourself a gauge stick for setting the height yet, just need to cut a bit of material at the focal lengths to set the head height?!

    • @jefferyj
      @jefferyj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do make gantry style fiber lasers if you need a larger working area. I've seen other people use a moving table but I couldn't tell you how to integrate it. For finding the focal length, the best method is to use lasers - they're supplied with almost every machine now.

    Hey great video and just what I need. A quick question if you have a moment. When engraving/marking aluminium does it have to be anodised? And would you say 20w is a more them powerful matching to mark stainless and aluminium.

    • @jefferyj
      @jefferyj  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anodizing is not necessary; a fiber laser can mark bare metal. Yes, a 20w can mark stainless and aluminum. If you need to hit depth, more power will be faster.

    Would you suggest 30W or 50W? My main materials will be gold and silver. Things like nameplates,engraving inside and outside of rings.
    The name plates would be anywhere from 1.5mm to 2mm.
    From my understanding the deeper the cutting the more passes and time it requires. Is there a quality drawback to multiple passes?
