If you leave all the slack on the tensioner side instead of the idler side, the cam lockers won't be the devil. There would also be no 'turn back one tooth' trickery. I don't personally do it this way, but there's more than one way to skin a cat and this is a great tutorial.
This guy worked on my car a few years ago. He changed my timing belt, tensioner, etc. I actually just had dinner with him last week after not seeing him for years. Sadly, he is out of the 3/S game. Great guy though, he knows his stuff! Wayne rules!
Can you ask him to come back LOL a shop in FL did my timing now I wont stop misfiring even though the timing was done right ive also gone thru a lot of part dart with them no sucess
you must set the initial belt tension correctly, it will jump time eventually. The tensioner only travels about 5mm and if the tension was not set correctly, the tensioner will be at its max travel, and after 200 miles or less, the belt will flop, and jump time. This guy didn't do that right, you need to take the slack out of the non tension side of the belt while adjusting the tensioner pulley, which he did not do, as evidenced by the slack disappearing when he rotated the crank pulley.
Thank you! Just got the belt in, buttoning up the rest tomorrow. A note for first timers like me: if your cams are not secured by wrench, lockers or bolts BEFORE you take the old timing belt off, your cam(s) will quickly turn by themselves followed by a loud thunk when you remove the belt. I am hoping I didn't do any damage, cams self-rotating is pretty common from what I have read.
Superb Job!!! I can't wait to buy my daily driver just so I can work on my car comfortable and with good caution to make sure I make all the right specifications just like the Car Gods intended.
The cam lock method used here is not clear although it is clearly important to be able to lock the cam sprockets. Also not clear is how the crank came to be 3 teeth back, when was this setting established, before the cams were bolted in place or afterwards? Some insight on how the hyd tensioner works would also have been helpful - it can't "pump up" there is no pressure source>
now, what do I do if my left side cams are off the marks even though, when I put the belt on and tensioned everything down correctly, they were on the marks??? I've rotated the crankshaft twice to give the cams a full revolution, and when I went back to the timing mark on the crank, my left side cams weren't timed??? what do I do???
thanks for the video. i was working on my montero and the cam rocker on the right spun back i figured if i i moved back at the mark ill be ok.. now after putting everything back I got a loud ticking noise on that same side can you advise on how to resolve problem
It's not brain surgery , some training is important ...I would do the cam seals too but really need to pull the V/C , try it in the 3000 I was a Mitsu tech
should have watched this vid before doing the t belt kit on my 3000gt. I've done tons of honda toyota timing belts but first time on a mitsubishi, it wasn't hard by any means but I didn't turn the tensioner pulley enough and there's a lot of slack now. guess I'm pulling everything off again
+Christian Avalos If not mistaken the reason why the crank set 1 - 3 tooth back is a safety measure just in case when you slipped the sprocket accidentally and when the cam shaft rotates caused by the spring tension, the valve will hit the piston. This is something you want to prevent when installing a timing belt. We normally make sure when working with timing belt to lower all piston from Top Dead Centre (TBC). By the way, I have been working with Mitsubishi 6A12 a lot ... ;)
+Onizuka Kimura one tooth behind on the crank is so when you apply the timing belt to the crank it removes the slack from the rear bank upon first rotation.
what if the crank shaft is at TDC and the cam sprocket moves about 90 degrees on a 98 Mitsubishi montero 3.5l. Do you think some valves might of gotten bent?
Alright so is this actually setting the timing for all cams, I recently bought a 3000gt and one cam is out if adjustment, do I go through this method or is there another solution
M8x1.25x 25or 30 size bolts. I tried it myself and it worked, confirmation from Mr. Hammer: www.3si.org/forum/f1/how-timing-belt-511711/index5.html post #48 and #49. The 30mm length would probably work best.
Thanks for the video. Should the belt go loose after 1 month changet at official dealer? Watch my video please, two weeks after going at 50MPH the engine stopped and i think timing went wrong jumping theets and breaking valves.
Anyone know if I caused damage to my engine? I accidentally left the Cam lockers bolts in when rotating the engine 1/4 turn counterclockwise then clockwise to realign the belt. I did hear a loud clacking noise but I'm hoping it's just the Cam gear hitting against the bolt.

Just found this and what a gem. So clear.
Great video, followed it to a T and got my timing done all by myself
This video was still helpful to me even though I have done my belt three times. Using the bolts to hold the cam gears... Awesome!

how did you rotate them back to tdc
Just make sure all your timing marks are lined up before putting the lockers in
@@dieconashi no my cams were in tdc but i forgot to put my lockers in so they went back, how do i put them back in tdc
Watch him do it at around 50 seconds in. Rotate the same direction he does for each cam and line the timing marks back up
@@dieconashi thank you so much have a blessed day
Can the same be done to the 2005 Santa Fe 3.5l v6 when replacing the timing belt. The engine look just like this one.

Hello- great informative video. Where did you purchase the special tool that attaches to the crankshaft sprocket that allows you to rotate it?
thanks for the video. i was working on my montero and the cam rocker on the right spun back i figured if i i moved back at the mark ill be ok.. now after putting everything back I got a loud ticking noise on that same side can you advise on how to resolve problem

I just used cable ties to lock the cam's together :) "you know 3000gt owners are cheap when..."
After rotating the crank with the crank bolt did yours get stuck?
I wish you had shown turning the cam gears individually to the non-A areas on the front bank as outlined in the manual. Otherwise, good video.
Do you you can help me with mine please
It's not brain surgery , some training is important ...I would do the cam seals too but really need to pull the V/C , try it in the 3000 I was a Mitsu tech
We need this in 1080p 😂
where did oil pan come from?

paper clip ??? that is something i never imaginated
Replace your freaking smoke alarm battery!
And thanks :)
do you pull the pin out?
just to be clear this is a V6 with four cams?
Yes sir! Its a rev happy motor.
Why do you think the crank pulley was 1 tooth back?
good all i wanted to know was how to tighten the tensioner
how did you move the cams so freely with no belt ON at the beginiin? if i move mine it would spin alot???
whats the purpose of having the crank 1 tooth back. I thought it needs to be aligned?

Ningishzidda Shar. yup you bent them
Did you need to replace the valves?
A lot easier with the engin out of the car... with it in, it takes an hour to fish you hands around beside the cradle.

Go through this process. No other solution.
What's the problem with turning cams without the timing belt? It should be way easier that way, instead of trying to turn them with the belt on... ???
What size bolts where used for the cam lockers?

You are screwed... if your belt broke, you’ll need valve replacements, maybe pistons too.

Check to make sure that you haven't bent a valve. I would be highly surprised if you did not bend some.
