- This portion of the Atlantis SquarePantis DVD is a special feature and shows how Rough Draft Studios Korea animates Spongebob (more specifically, the episode "Atlantis Squarepantis"). No one on TH-cam uploaded this yet so I might as well be the first. I don't have the DVD, I found this on a Thai Facebook post after searching up "rough draft studios spongebob" on google.
I don't own anything.

I love you Rough Draft Studios (1991-Today)
Me 2🙂👍🏻
Count me in guys
I told my friend that SpongeBob was animated in Korea, he was so baffled about until I told him it was not only to cut costs but for the foreign studios they're outsourcing to (Rough Draft or Wang Film Productions e.g) make money. Other shows like Ren & Stimpy and Timon & Pumbaa (TV series) we're partially animated at Rough Draft Studios.
rough draft studios animates pretty much everything, they did adventure time, american dragon jake long, family guy, steven universe, king of the hill, beavis and butthead... a lot
@@juiceoverflow They even did a few movies as well. I don't know all the movies they worked on, but I know they provided additional ink-and-paint for "FernGully: The Last Rainforest".
looks so weird the fact sponge bob animation studios is on south korea
Well most of tv shows go to North Korea I think atleast that’s what I got from big city greens or teen titans go I’m not sure
@@baldifan75 i thought it was all american
@@CasperTheRamKnight it is. But they animated everything in South Korea because it’s cheaper. Nothing screams American capitalism more than outsourcing to another country to pay less
@@baldifan75 *South Korea
North Korea kinda hates us.
I figured that SpongeBob Squarepants would be animated in South Korea.
Its so magical to see how they turn drawings into animation !😲
Real evolution
Drawings*
What did it say before?
magical, and hard.
@@ssaman3549 but worth it
Idk why spongebob was made on south korea, but united plankton is stephen hillenburg's Studio
All of the planning, storyboarding and editing happen in the USA. Spongebobs animation is outsourced to Korea
The outsourcing is to cut costs.
Korea has a lower conversion rate
lol
United plankton produce the show (writing, storeboarding, editing, they paint the original background keys and ect)
the episode in this video is “Atlantis squarepantis”
This is how other shows were also animated.
Yup, before digital animation was replaced with touchscreens around 2012.
@@PoorDog69 you know tv shows still do this method right
@@OakTreeIsaac no
@@PoorDog69 Welp, they do
@@PoorDog69 spongebob is an example of shows who still animated on paper even to this day.
I thought this was a shitpost at first. I had no idea it was in Korea.
30th Anniversary of Rough Draft Studios (1991-2021)
I wonder if people in Nickelodeon Animation Studios will still be making more 2d digital ink & paint traditional animated shows really soon with like that in Rough Draft Studios of South Korea.
I freaking love the fact that they do it in Korea, this is a good reason why I like cartoons being done in various ways
It took about 3 frames in full speed in animation of this cartoon in My life as a Teenage Robot and The Mighty B and especially SpongeBob SquarePants.
I love the music in this.
It is cool how they animate it in paper and also i can't believe spectacular Spider-Man do it like this too, just send them to Japan
What are you saying?
@@ExeUnknown if you see the spectacular spiderman behind the scene, they actually just the same process as spongebob where give the Japanese do the work, but they still colour it in digital
@@rlc_123 it's not japan it's south korea but if it was i'd say it would be safe to call spongebob an anime lol
@@jytvreal yeah i know now when i send the comment idk what it from and just say it from Japan
surf rock fits Bikini Bottom well.....
1:28 Was SpongeBob using rig animation at this time?
no
And to follow up on the video uploader's response, I'm pretty sure it _still_ doesn't.
@@Zakawer2 Yeah I'm pretty sure the current seasons definitely aren't rig animation
I love spongebob so much
SouthernBob KoreanPants
Yes
So this was where all the SpongeBob episodes were filmed I thought they were filmed in Burbank California?
all of the storyboarding and other shit takes place in california. the show is animated in korea to cut costs
@@RangoAnimationssomething tells me you’re tired of telling people the same thing.
@@DatDrawingKid011 Yes very
And I thought I was crazy because I wanted to animate drawing traditionally
The overses animation is 2D and hand-drawn, then digitally inked and painted.
This was the animation method used for _SpongeBob SquarePants_ at the time, and I think it's safe to say that this exact method is still in use as of 2024 (with the only difference being that the hardware and software used for this process have been updated). Many other 2D cartoons also have their overseas animation handled this way, although many of them instead use digital puppet-rig/cutout animation instead and completely forego hand-drawn animation altogether.
I think hand-drawn traditional animation (including digital ink-and-paint) tends to feel more alive and has more personality to it, compared to the aforementioned digital puppet-rig/cutout animation. That said, there are cartoons using the latter animation style that have gotten pretty good at imitating the expressiveness and fluidity of the former.
While the animation is produced in Korea, *_literally everything else_* (including the character designs, background designs, model sheets, art direction, colors, storyboarding, writing, voice acting, scoring, sound effects, editing, direction, production etc.) is produced entirely in the United States.
1:28 SpongeBob animated by Toon Boom Harmony
True but during this time they were using a program called Toonz which was like Toon Boom.
@@RangoAnimations they didn't use toon boom until 2012, except experimenting with in 2009 with truth or square
Not animated but colored
huh, i never knew rough draft also used what's now known as opentoonz
I wish most of my work would be outsourced to Rough Draft.
damn lol nice!
100th Comment 🎉
Y did my comment get deleted? All I said was touchscreens became common in the animation industry around 2012.
what is a programs animation SpongeBob
Most likely Toon Boom Harmony Premium. That's what all the big tv shows use. Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad etc
thank you my friend 🥰
@@sakurachannel9624 Most likely Adobe
George Byers wasn’t toon boom proprietary when this was made? It’s probs some other software (2009ish)
People. It basically Opentoonz's professional equivalent used in the industry
Southbob koreapants
how else can you scan the paintings, there is another way?
idk i don't work there because i'm not Korean
Nice
So it's all anime
no
😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love SpongeBob SquarePants so much. I freaking love how they provide animation in South Korea😍🥰💛💖💜💙🧽🌈🦄📱
