    Who am to even try to add to the justified accolades expressed by others on this forum? I loved his voice and every one of interpretations of whatever he sang. I would have gladly paid money to hear him sing from the telephone directory. In this particular piece his contribution is everything it should be and then acres more. Had Bach been in the audience he would surely have wept with joy on hearing this rendition of his work...

    I have this recording, how nice to see it in high def black and white.
    DFD did not have a booming voice for a baritone, but the timbre was unmistakeable, and his phrasing and technique were unsurpassed. One of the 20th century's greatest singers.

    I am pretty sure Bach would have loved to hear what modern instruments can do with his music as well as period pieces - his humanity and genius can take any number of playings! DFD showing his mastery of his instrument! Personally I prefer a little more weight to the chest ( just to give the brass a run for their money!) but this is a lovely interpretation. The one voice I would love to have heard doing this is Kipnis!

    • @andrewmargrave7518
      @andrewmargrave7518 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This piece would have been too high for Kipnis. All the bass-clef solo writing in the Christmas Oratorio calls for a baritone.

    His Lower register is not as strong as his upper and one could imagine a better performance but it is only in the imagination .The interpretation and the way his voice fits so well with the words are wonderful. This is why his singing of Schubert Lieder has never been surpassed.

    @TheBfwal1 It's true!!! NEVER saw any singer able to do anything as huge as his repertorio and sense, i personally admire him, to me there are no other singers but DFD. I like Gerard Souzay, rene pape, and thomas quasthoff, or even kurt moll (cant deny the last 3 have large voices), personally i think they're really great, but this man is above'em... so again, talking about timbre and size and not just about timbre: can u say "there are no greater instruments than DFD?". That's my point o'view.

I understood that you made an unjustified negative comment about him, so I sought to address that! I find it amazing that people like you think they know better than great artists. I apologize for the personal remark, as I don't like it when others get personal, but your comment annoyed me, especially as I read it so soon after the sad death of this outstanding singer!

    It may come as a surprise to you, but I have uploaded here several of his best performances of Bach under Karl Richter. If you wish, you may find them in my #1/3 Karl Richter playlist.
    It is humanly impossible for any artist to be always at his/her peak. With all due respect for him, the late and great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was not at his best when he performed this piece - and it will take more than your offensive remarks to make me change my opinion about it.

    I usually hate Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau--he's all trills and frills, flutey and snooty, but this particular recital is fantastic. Other than losing some sound on his low notes, his delivery of this incredibly difficult aria is flawless.

      Well not every baritone has to sound like bastianini. I find Fischer-dieskau's type of voice - not overwhelming, but sweet, reassuring and comforting - to be absolutely ideal for oriatorio.

    • @ColonelFredPuntridge
      @ColonelFredPuntridge ปีที่แล้ว

      @@falkfink I would say: ideal for _lieder_ and adequate for oratorio.
      I agree, he's very good for _lieder_ although his affectations mean that you always know it's DFD. Why not just sing the songs, like all these wonderful old-school midrange baritones like Gerhard Hüsch, Heinrich Schlusnus, Karl Schmitt-Walter, and Marko Rothmüller? Sing the music and don't try so hard to make it sound like YOU all the time! But that's up to him. My only real objection is when he tries to sing the Dutchman, or Iago, or Fredrich von Telramund, or Macbeth, or any of these big-orchestra parts.

    • @falkfink
      @falkfink 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ColonelFredPuntridge It's true, his voice is not that well suited to a lot of oratorio, but weihnachtsoratorium is perfect for him in my opinion. I much prefer a baritone struggling with the A's in this piece over a bass barking out the E's. Even more so for the other aria/erleucht auch meine finstren sinnen. But I have to agree, in some oratorio like Eliah or Messiah he really falls short compared to lower voices. His verdi is (in my opinion) an absolute disaster. While holländer is obviously too low for him, I do like his gunther.
