It's fascinating the way these 3 - and the series - explore the philosophy of the sword.
Bones of Creation is obsessed with the perfect sword and attaining perfection in it.
Screaming Phoenix Killer is a gambler - his philosophy is summed up with "Shape of My Heart" by Sting; he doesn't worship the sword itself, but the fight, the duel, and every fight, regardless of his opponent, is not about winning, it's about ending it - someone has to die or it simply isn't worth it. He doesn't actually want to attain perfection like Bones of Creation - he wants to keep gambling until he finds his end. His philosophy is different but compatible enough with Bones of Creation that the latter respects him greatly for it; I remember him telling his minions that the Killer deserves a proper funeral.
Meanwhile, you've got Enigmatic Gale, who surpasses BOTH of them as a swordsman, to the point he's gotten absolutely bored of it. Which is why while the other two focus on attaining the greatest sword or swordfight, he ignores swordsmanship entirely and resorts to trickery to fight his enemies, because that's the only thing that amuses him. Which obviously leads to the two of them both hating his guts by the end of it all.

Meanwhile Edgeless Blade is just: "Fuck the blade, I could cut with my damn hair if I want to."

He got his proper funeral, by the way. You can see it both in the first movie and the first episode of season 3

@@GeneralSouthParkFan Yeah Edgeless Blade is outside of the entire thing. He's arguably NOT a swordsman at all, just a monk who "cuts" with sheer force of will.

@@korsekil he's anything but a monk, more like a retired general or someone of comparable responsibility if his beef with Centipede is of any indication

@@korsekil It's an ancient Chinese philosophy on swordsmanship - summed up in the metaphor that the perfect swordsman could kill with a blade of grass. What's cool is that this show does a lot of mixtures between Chinese and Japanese swordsmanship philosophies in all of the characters. There's a spectrum of peoples on this philosophical axis.
Bones of Creation strives for the perfect sword for the perfect swordsman. For him, the sword is a part of the swordsman's soul, an inseparable part of their body - and until the perfect swordsman finds the perfect sword, they cannot be said to be complete. Fairly straightforward.
The Hu Yin Shi are at this same level of reverence where the sword and their sword techniques are revered and ritualised to a sacred degree. There is a scene where Dan Fei (the sword shrine maiden) is criticised for sticking so dogmatically to her traditional sword technique even though it was designed for a swordsman with a longer reach, which I think says it all - the sword is more a philosophical instrument than a tool.
Screaming Pheonix Killer uses swords like a verb or a question. For him, the sword is not a thing, but a question. He is like Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. In Moby Dick, Captain Ahab strikes out at the white whale because he believes it is an agent of God - and in striking the white whale, he will know the truth, even if it damns him or kills him, or he finds nothing behind the whale's intelligence. SPK is consumed by a similar single-minded maniacal focus on truth by violence, to such an extent that he feels compelled to validate the truth he suspects by confirming it with his own death. This is tragic when you watch the movie and realise he was not always like this, and he didn't even get to die by the greatest swordsman's hand.
For Duck/Enigmatic Gale, he's considerably more pragmatic and materialist. He even criticises the Bones of Creation for thinking that willpower and passion alone can drive him to the top of swordsmanship. From this we can presume that Duck probably attained his peerless skill from lots of experience, training, raw talent e.t.c., and he does not pay much heed to philosophies of swordsmanship, seeing those things as trivialities.
Shang Bu Huan goes to the farthest end of the spectrum, where the sword is just a tool like any other, and he becomes the living embodiment of "killing with a blade of grass." He even manages to kill with a regular stick, and his sword is... Well I won't say, in case it spoils it for anyone. People like him and Monk spend all of their time cultivating their chi, their skills, training their bodies, and they shun reliance on magic weapons or magic sorceries. Notably the characters who rely on sorceries like Kei Gai, the Hu Yin Shi or Mantis are considerably less skilled at fighting than those who never use magics like Shang or Monk, or who know how to use sorcery but choose not to use it, like Duck or BoC.

What I love about this scene is that screaming phoenix killer says several times that He can tell who the winner of a duel is going to be before it even starts. That moment right before the fight starts where you just see him freaking out is him realizing he's about to fucking die.
