Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I was wondering what do you think about the SONY sel18-200 OSS lens. Is it worth it? I worried about the sharpness on the edges at 200mm. Please comment
What lens should I use on my Sony a6000 for daily shooting purposes and for shooting wild life? I have 16-50 kit lens, 55-210 zoom lens, 18-105 G-lens and 30mm macro. Or should I buy any other lens? please recommend.
Im so lost too right now. Just bought sony a6000 (2nd hand) and no manual included, so i really dont know where to start. Im new to photography, no any exp/background.

wow, this was so helpful. I am a total novice to photography and my Sony a6000 is the first real camera I've ever owned. I was so sad when first playing with it because I couldn't get most of the pictures in focus. 20 minutes into your video and you go over focus settings and I realize it's on af-a as default. I start playing with focus as you go over in the video and BOOM, pictures are all in focus! Woah, just made me not return my camera because I was so hopeless of ever learning this. I can't wait to buy your book! I have to wait until after Christmas but then I'm getting it and going through it chapter by chapter. You really did make this so easy and broke it down for is amateurs - thank you!
So far I love my "new" Sony a6000. I wanted to upgrade from mere smart phone use and this is a great step up without breaking the bank. I have watched a lot of vids on setting things up and this is a rare one where the pro says a lot of the defaults are just fine. Almost exclusively, tutorials portray defaults as terrible if not blasphemy. It made me wonder why camera manufacturers would set the defaults as terrible and unusable? At least this guy honestly states a lot of the defaults are fine and time savers. That said, I am learning the deep theory so I better understand when to NOT rely on defaults. I started in the nineties on 35mm SLRs and know what it is like to tweak the primary three for every shot (it sucks). At least on these newer cameras there are semi auto modes where I can just rely on the camera to automatically adjust one or two sides of the triangle instead of it all being on my shoulders. . So far I haven't seen a huge improvement using the Sony a6000 in full auto mode compared to my Motorola smart phone. But that is largely because I have not tweaked a lot of the settings. Courses like this one help a LOT. Of course the 48 MP sensor in MY Motorola smart phone is ridiculously good too, even proving useful for astrophotography. But the depth of field is almost completely fixed on my smart phone (not low enough) and the higher iso settings are VERY noisy. Plus mounting any cell phone to a telescope barely works. I forgot how much of a difference F flexibility makes in giving a professional appearance to my images. And even an APSC sensor will handle higher iso settings vastly better than the microscopic sensor of even a great smartphone. So I have zero regrets here. With the a6000 I won't merely be taking pics. It will enable a more artistic approach. The focus and compose technique is a key advantage of real cameras.
Great overview Tony! May I dare say yours is way more useful and practical (real hands on demo) than some of the paid videos out there for this camera! Really appreciate the fact you're giving this tutorial for free. I'm inclined to buy your book after this video. It's that good!
I cannot thank you enough for making this video. I bought this camera at a pawn shop for a third of its value, and it had horrific performance. At first, I thought the camera was just broken, but figured if I fiddled with the settings, I could improve it a little. Your video fixed ALL of the problems for me!!! You frickin' rule.
Very helpful for the beginner. Thank you for your thoughtful, informative and thorough explanations. Hands down the best video for learning the basics of the A6000.
A friend of mine loaned me his SONY a6000 because he could not figure it out, neither could I until I stumbled across this posting. You, my friend, are making me look good. Undecided if I want to share this with my friend. In any case, well done on many levels...you're a great teacher
one stop solution for any new a6000 owner. great work... please post more videos where you explain which settings to chose and why considering what your shooting
Thank you Tony Northrup! When I first purchased my a6000, I played around with it for half an hour and after that didn't touch it for two days. I was so intimidated by all the features and functions. And the fact that it was my first digital camera only exacerbated the whole situation. Then I found your video on youtube..........
A neat trick you can use with that built-in flash is that you can actually hold it back with one finger so it's pointing upwards, so you can bounce it off the ceiling. Albeit, this is a last resort and you need a fairly low ceiling, but it does work great.
I bought my Sony A6000 yesterday, I have only ever used point & shoot cameras or my phone before. I found your tutorial extremely detailed and easy to follow. I will be watching again to help consolidate the information. Thank you Tony.
Nice video Tony! As a A6000 user I would highly recommend Sigma prime lenses 19mm f2.8, 30mm f2.8 and 60m f2.8. they are under $200.00 each. For ultra wide angle Rokinon 12mm f2.0 and if you like fisheye look Rokinon 8mm f2.8, these are fully manual lenses but at that focal length it's easy to focus. Best external flash for A6000 is Nissin i40, small flash with enough power for most of the pictures. If you are going to use A6000 on tripod I would recommend Neewer L bracket with Arca-Swiss mount.
Andres Eduardo Villamuez Definitely yes, though the Phase Detection Focus on only works on the center of the Sigma trinity (19, 30, 60). Highly recommend those lenses though!!!
Tony, thank you. Just bought mine yesterday and had trouble adjusting to this menu after using a Fujifilm for years. This was a great tutorial. Now I'm not mind boggled and lost in space after watching this.
This must be the best andmost comprehensive Sony a6000 guide video out there. I'm a one level above beginner who is looking to get better in photography and I found this video extremely useful and easy to understand
Thank you so much for being so clear and informative on all the functions of this great camera! Yes, I am a new owner of the Sony a6000, with a lot to learn. I don't mind your plugs for your books, may even look into purchasing for even more help in learning.
+gemsparx As a new owner of the A6000, are you relatively pleased with your purchase? Did a firmware upgrade add the XAVC S video format option? I'm contemplating a purchase of this camera.

Its more than a year since I bought this nice camera and after going through several books and video clips, I finally got the full info from this wonderful tutorial. Not only about this camera, but also I learnt a lot about the photography in general.... sincere thanks...
Tony, Really informative video. After watching it I ordered your book to learn more about Photography. Hopefully it is as easily explained in your book as you did it on this video? I love pictures but I usually use my cell phone or a average P&S camera. I am ready to step up to a camera such as the Sony A6000. The question I have for you is I am on a tight budget( Daughter in college for 6 years) and want to buy the body only and pick up a lens to fit my style. I am torn between the Sony 50mm f/1.8 mid range lens or Sony E55-210mm f4.4-6.3 lens. I love taking pictures of landscape, family gatherings, food, oceans and cars. Which lens do you think would fit all my needs as a starter for my 1st professional camera??? I would really appreciate your opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance
In December of 2018, this is still the best video tut. for the sony A6000. I have had my 6000 for a little under two years, and have watched TONS of vids. trying to learn about my camera. I come from the days of film and darkrooms. Digital is new to me, plus film and darkrooms was a long time ago, so I'm trying to re-learn photography in general, and it really helps to know how the camera itself works. Thanks for this video, and I'm glad I discovered this channel!
Excellent video. I bought the a6000 to get started in the world of photography. This video and a few others you have done have been pivotal in the decision on which to buy. Two days ago I had no idea what an F stop was and the significance of the aperture was. Thanks for your help.
I only came here to find out where the controls for the f stops were hidden but I found the whole video very helpful. At 32:50 I actually screamed, I've had this camera for a couple of years now and had no idea it had a built in flash LOL!
I swear that I watch this again before every major convention just to help me get a feel for my camera again. Great video to teach me about the only real camera I have ever owned.
Ok... I'm a straight guy, and I find this guy absolutely charming. I don't normally use the word charming, however it's definitely the right word. Thank you for the very well produced, information-packed, and yes, charming video.
I have just purchased the A6000 and awaiting delivery. This tutorial was just what I needed. Thanks so much for your clear and informative presentation.
One hour free tutorial, Wow. Bought the a6000 five months ago and wasn't really getting into using more than the auto mode. Your video has made it easy for me to navigate and better understand the menus and get to what I need to get me started and motivated to continue using and learning about my camera. Thanks.
I've used simple point and shoot cameras for a long time and finally decided to up my game. I recently purchased this camera with little to no knowledge of aperture, iso, etc... This was the first video I came across and it helped me so, so much. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to more tutorials. Thank you so much!
I'm watching this in July 2022 and this is the best video I've watched so far about the a6000 and I've watched a lot. Thanks for the great tutorial you explain things very simply and clear. You have a subscriber
Yours has to be the best online tutorials available. I used it exclusively for my Nikon d5300 and am so glad to see that you have a similar one for my new Sony a6000.
A very informative video which answered all my questions. This is definitely on my purchase list but I beg you please do not impersonate Johnny Five again; it was agonizing! Lol!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a beginner in the whole photography world and just bought this exact camera, and not only did I learn about how THIS specific camera works, but also gained knowledge about other photography elements like f stops and exposure. I appreciate it!!
I'm a beginner who has just bought an old A6000. This video has really helped, not just to use the settings but for a basic understanding of some fundamental concepts. Great video, set at the perfect level for me, nice tone and great way of explaining things. Thanks for making it :-)
Fantastic job, Tony! I'm a beginning photographer who just took delivery of my a6000 as my first "real" camera 5 days ago; in my opinion this video should be mandatory viewing for any new a6000 owner. I can't say it enough - you did a phenomenal job walking through the features of the camera with equally great "real world" use cases. Thanks again for doing this and making it available.
Thank Heavens! This is all that you need if you just bought this camera. Mr. Northrup gets you started, and explains the functions clearly and well. Have your camera in your hand when he starts, and follow along. I was panicking, I spent more than a hour watching Mr. Fong and deciding I might have made mistake buying this A6000. Fear not. Watch this video, in stages, and then come back to it. I am stopping now, to buy the book.
Thank you for this outstanding instructional video. After purchasing my new Sony a6000 a week ago, I sat and watched and set up the camera that night. The next two days, spent taking wonderful images that came so much easier, based on this video introducing me to the controls and capabilities. I'm still learning to unleash it's power but wanted to state that the information you provide is suitable for not just a beginner, but well seasoned photographer as well...
Tony's tutorials are really one of the most thoughtfully produced. They are packed with practical knowledge and "pearls" Keep up the great work Tony. I am planning to buy your book.
He clearly doesn't know how to focus with this camera or is extremely insecure and prejudiced about the mirrorless take-over. I've seen few 1Dx and D4 owners use a6000 as their B camera and they love it for sports and wildlife. a6000 has the best AF (intelligence and speed) when you compare it with other DSLRs under 1000 dollars.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Just bought a Sony A6000 for my husband. This video is perfect for him. I'm going to have to get your books (video versions for my husband though). If those videos are as easy to follow and understand as this one is, my husband will thoroughly enjoy and appreciate his A6000. Again, thank you.
My husband gave me this camera for Christmas (Christmas 2018) and I wanted to learn more about the camera and I am so glad that I had bummped into your TH-cam video! Thank you so much for taking the time to go over so many important stuff, and turning my brain into "scrambled eggs" in the process ;) You made me even more excited about this camera and with the proper notes I took, I am ready to go over them and set my camera up the proper way. I just clicked the "SUBSCRIBE" button, so I am now looking forward on getting your videos to learn more.
I am so happy I watched this before I go pick up my camera. Now I won't feel so overwhelmed when I open it. I am a newbee in the photography world. I hope not to be long though!! Thanks I recommend you highly!
Thanks for the great introduction/tutorial. Played with my a6000 for a few days, and then watched this to gain a better understanding of my camera! Thanks for the great, professional video!
This was awesome. I am totally new to photography and recently bought a sony a6000. This helped a LOT. You are a patient teacher and very capable of teaching beginners in spite of your expertise. Feel like I should have paid for this info. You're helping a lot of people like me out there, I'm sure!!
I was looking for something like this for quite a long while now, such an in-depth video which virtually covers everything you need to know about the A6000. Thank you Tony!
8 years ago! No wonder you look so young! Well, the thanks are still coming in... This was a great video and helped my ADHD brain finally gain a little familiarity with my A6000. Of course I still want the A7Rv! I'm glad you were able to get through all these intervening years without the knowledge that DPReview would get shuttered (bad camera pun)(ok not bad - horrible). Thank you!
Finally got my Sony A6000 thanks for this video it helped a lot with some of the many settings. My last camera was the Nikon D5100. I have always been a Nikon girl. When I went into the store to buy a new camera, I picked up this Sony and was totally hooked.
I remember A200 times when manual was handy, but A6000 manual is pretty weak. Thanks for a great job, it was really fun and useful to watch this tutorial!
thank you for your super professional and clear tutorial about the a6000! I purchased one yesterday and have never used a camera off auto...so I'm excited to start learning all the functions : )
Wow, This can't get better & simpler than this. All those professionals were starting to scare to scare me off. Thank you so much. I learned great deal thanks to Tony Nothrup. You Rock man
This tutorial is the most intelligent and informative tutorial video I have watched. I will probably purchase this camera because of the hands on demonstration. With the information contained in this video success and enjoyment almost guaranteed. Thank you
Wow you just covered the basics of digital photography and Sony a6000 review in one! I switched to Sony a6000 for mainly to replace bulky DSLR for light travel. Thanks so much!
love the in-depth lesson plan....l learned so much more with this precise tutorial... flash etc ! When I do decide to use video settings I will come back to your suggestions presented here...many thanks Tony..
Thank you SO much for this video! I am an amateur and will be getting this camera in a few weeks. I've watched tons and tons of videos on it, reviews and hands on demos and 'tutorials' as I'm worried I won't be able to control it properly and get the most out of it, but this is the only one which has actually helped me! Really appreciate the fact you've taken your time to explain and go through things SLOWLY! So many people go through it so fast and never explain what you'd use certain things for, it's so annoying as a beginner! I'm really excited to get it now, I'm no longer worried about getting lost in the settings now I've found this video! Yay :-)
Just terrific, Tony...thank you. I've just begun learning photography, and of all the resources I've found online, your contributions remain the most consistently helpful and enjoyable to watch. With gratitude to you and Chelsea
Tony, I just bought a Sony a6000, this tutorial was fantastic, I subscribed and will be buying your books. Thanks for the best understanding of this wonderful camera.
I've been using an A6000 for a few months and though I was learning my way around it pretty well. Not so fast! This is a great video and I've learned a lot. Thank you. Just ordered the book too.
Just received my A6000 today and used the video to explore many of the capabilities and controls. I've owned the A5100 for about 4 years so already familiar with the Sony APSC format.
Very informative video for anyone who buys this Camera. I just recently purchased this A6000 and have only used it in Auto everything mode. Thanks for the video.
Love your videos - straight forward with great examples and close-ups. Your delivery speed is perfect. Your kindle books with color photos and videos - awesome!
Dear Mr.Tony, This is the first video of your's i saw and i was really impressed upon the content in the video. Im a guy who dont even own a camera but very much enthusiased by the photography and the camera technology. Initially when I came across this video, I was like "An hour length video? I may as well download it and watch it later". Only yesterday I made my mind for watching it and was totally impressed by it that made me comment me on this. I dont see myself buying any camera in near future or your books on photography. In the beginning of the vide, I thought this video will be all about Sony a6000 only. But I wasnt really expecting you explaining all these photography terms and fucntions like aperture/f stops and shutter speed and ISO stuffs. There was a huge knowledge I gained from this video and thankyou for that. This makes me wanna see more of your videos for filling up my doubt gaps in my brain. But only with a camera I can expriment and experience them. I just loved your tutorial. It was more of photography tutorial than a tutorial for Sony a6000. I once again thank you very much for shedding light upon so many details even when they were not necessary just for sake of people like me. I would like you to make more such videos - on the upcoming camera technology and photography.
An excellent video - after watching this with my camera in my hand, I feel like I have much better command over my photo taking. An hour VERY well spent.
I am a beginner and am considering buying this camera so this video is just what I needed. I plan to buy your buying guide before making any purchase, though. I really enjoyed this tutorial and it was helpful in general, as well as specifically for this camera. Thanks for your time and effort.
Tony, thank you SOOO much for this video. I just bought a Sony a6000, my first close-to-pro camera, and was looking for a quick way to get to know it's features and functions. In additiona, your professional insight added so much more depth to what this camera can do.

Ryan Stephen Thanks, Ryan. Just curious, which paid video did you buy?
Tony Northrup Well, I subscribed to Gary Fong's a6000 paid tutorial. It's here: garyfong.com BTW, I've got your ebook!
Ryan Stephen Same here. I wish I would have found this two days ago. Gary's is good, but really doesn't have anything that Tony doesn't cover.
Gary fong causes more confusion than he teaches. Very bad teaching style. He IS more of a salesman trying to sell you stuff. Not Tony.

Its more than a year since I bought this nice camera and after going through several books and video clips, I finally got the full info from this wonderful tutorial. Not only about this camera, but also I learnt a lot about the photography in general.... sincere thanks...
Tony,
Really informative video.

Thanks for your help.
bluenapalm123 Glad to help! Enjoy!
bluenapalm123 and
I only came here to find out where the controls for the f stops were hidden but I found the whole video very helpful. At 32:50 I actually screamed, I've had this camera for a couple of years now and had no idea it had a built in flash LOL!
😆
Tony you helped me a lot ! This tutorial is really helpful , thank you for doing this !
+kgbe Glad to help!
I swear that I watch this again before every major convention just to help me get a feel for my camera again. Great video to teach me about the only real camera I have ever owned.
Thanks for this video. You are making your review and instruction very simply. Good!
Glad I could help!
I just had my Alph 6000 purchased when I had my visit in the US last month. Now I understand better and how SLR works.
Ok... I'm a straight guy, and I find this guy absolutely charming. I don't normally use the word charming, however it's definitely the right word. Thank you for the very well produced, information-packed, and yes, charming video.
THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL. VERY USEFUL AND LEARNED QUITE A BIT.
Glad I could help!
I have just purchased the A6000 and awaiting delivery. This tutorial was just what I needed. Thanks so much for your clear and informative presentation.
Richard Court My pleasure! Enjoy your Sony!
Great - well organised and very helpful teaching methods. Thank you.
One hour free tutorial, Wow. Bought the a6000 five months ago and wasn't really getting into using more than the auto mode. Your video has made it easy for me to navigate and better understand the menus and get to what I need to get me started and motivated to continue using and learning about my camera. Thanks.
I really enjoyed watching your video, helped me a lot to get started. Thank you!
Excellent, excellent, excellent video. But I think the suitcase is actually a toolbox. :)
His video, he can call it what he wants!
I'm watching this in July 2022 and this is the best video I've watched so far about the a6000 and I've watched a lot. Thanks for the great tutorial you explain things very simply and clear. You have a subscriber
Thanks Tony! It's a great tutorial!
Thanks, and glad I could help!
Yours has to be the best online tutorials available. I used it exclusively for my Nikon d5300 and am so glad to see that you have a similar one for my new Sony a6000.
Thank you so much for excellent informative video!
+Trần Uyên You're welcome, and glad I could help!
Tony Northrup is an excellent instructor. I love the teaching videos! You make learning easy. Thanks for your help.
Great video, great voice.
+Emanuel da Silva Thanks!
Ken Schuller thanks, Ken!
You are awesome. Thank you very much for the tutorial. I own a Sony a6000.. feel more confident now 😃
Wow I can't believe how many tutorials you have for different cameras. You guys have really put some work into this. Nice job.
Just bought an used a6000 for 400$..thanks for informative video : )
+Nikhil Kumar (NikGamesandVFX) secondhand or new ?
+Nazrin Ramlan 7 moths used bro..so it has more than 1 year warranty left . Also got a Canon EF adapter worth 100$ for free :D
great.. hows it works ?
$400 !! You were conned. For a used camera

*is it just me ? his remind me Anderson Cooper*. Lol
Just you...
@@bobsbarnacle ow... Ok.
Having been dependent of 'tutorials' all my life, I can safely say this is one of the very best. Thank you!
JC Wicart Thanks, JC! Glad to help.
11 frames per sec.Tony
D.S. Owens Yes, my mistake.
Tony's tutorials are really one of the most thoughtfully produced. They are packed with practical knowledge and "pearls"
Keep up the great work Tony.
You're welcome. Enjoy!
Just bought the a6000. This tutorial help me a lot. Watching this tutorial while trying everything I've learned. Thank you very much :)
I love when you laugh in between the video. This gives me a feeling that you are enjoying what you are doing.
a6000 happens to be my very first camera and your tutorial helped me tons! Thank you for sharing it.
Glad to help!
Excellent tutorial. Clear and concise. I was struggling with the features of the a6000 until I watched your video. Thanks Tony!
We have the camera for few years now, but I just now starting to get into it more seriously. Your explanation are so good, thank you.
Just purchased this camera as a beginner. This video was great. I can’t thank you enough.
A few hours to go for my Sony a6000L to be in my hands..........Crisp, clear and informative video
I remember A200 times when manual was handy, but A6000 manual is pretty weak. Thanks for a great job, it was really fun and useful to watch this tutorial!
+Artyom Nikolaev Thanks, and I'm glad I could help!
thank you for your super professional and clear tutorial about the a6000! I purchased one yesterday and have never used a camera off auto...so I'm excited to start learning all the functions : )
One of the best instructional videos I have had the opportunity to view. Dynamic speaker who holds your attention at "all" times.
Steven Nelson Thanks!
Thank you
Tony makes me want to become a photographer just from how easy he makes digesting this information. Thanks again Tony!
JUST brought the a6000 and man you sir are amazing, i returned my canon t6 and wanted to go mirrorless. Thank you so much im ordering the book
Glad to help!
Tony & Chelsea, i had a question what lens should buy that isnt crazy expensive my goal is portraits some up close shots and street photography
Thanks Tony. I've had my a6000 for a few months now but learned loads watching this, just as I thought I had it nailed!
EandF Ramos Glad I could help!
Love your videos - straight forward with great examples and close-ups. Your delivery speed is perfect. Your kindle books with color photos and videos - awesome!
Bob Horn Thanks, Bob!
Dear Mr.Tony,
This is the first video of your's i saw and i was really impressed upon the content in the video.
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? Awesome job - concise, focused, clear and to the point explanations.
Tony, thank you SOOO much for this video. I just bought a Sony a6000, my first close-to-pro camera, and was looking for a quick way to get to know it's features and functions. In additiona, your professional insight added so much more depth to what this camera can do.
