  • In this video you'll learn how to carve a sign that is larger than your CNC, using the tiling toolpath method. I cover every detail from start to finish using VCarve Pro, Masso Controller and my Onefinity Elite Foreman. As always, I've included VCarve screenshots and other helpful tips and tricks that could help you learn to use your program more efficiently.

    Hi, a quick vcarve tip: if you need a selected text or anything that is selected. If you want it to turn ? just hit the number 9 key on your keyboard, once it will turn 45 degrees, and 2 times it will turn 90 degrees. That is way faster than with any menu item Kind regards Hans
    Oh by the way, to centre the selection, just hit the F9 key. That is also way faster

    Great technique for moving the work-piece to the second tile work origin using the spindle. Thanks - I'll definitely put that in my bag of tricks! Also, a humble request to do a "must have" set of bits video (with affiliate links of course). Cheers brother!

      That second tile XY trick is pretty much foolproof, especially if you can rely on a fence for your X position.

    Great video! I've noticed some people use dowels to locate their tile sections. Your method - using a fence and a saved offset - sure makes quick work of tiling (a more efficient alternative to dowels provided tiles do not cross critical vectors). Thanks very much, can't wait to try it!

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! But just a quick note, my method works fine even if you’re crossing critical vectors. It’s just safer to avoid splitting vectors if you can.😉👍

    Great vid, project turned out great. One trick I learned for rotating a project is to change to a rotary which will automatically rotate stuff, then change back. I really thing Vectric is going to do this automatically some day, but that little trick saves a few steps. I haven’t done many tiles, but one trick I’ve seen is a dowel, but the spindle idea is clever.

    This was a great video, I really like your videos because I learn new ways of doing things. Other videos that I have watched on tiling always use a dowel set up , I like the way you set it up with the G56. Length of videos don't bother me when you are learning different techniques. I don't have a machine yet I'm still saving up, but I have a friend that lets me use his machine now and then so when I get my machine I will have the knowledge to set up and run my own machine. Another excellent video. I've been curious about tiling as I come up to speed with CNCs. Do you know if there an easy way to tile this with vcarve but instead of tiling through like you did (and probably most people), if you could flip it and inserting tile 2 from the same direction (I have wall pretty close behind my elite due to small workshop, so I cant push a work piece through).

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the Super Thanks!!❤️ I understand your issue, and there may be a way to do it that way, but if there is, I’m not familiar with it.
      Just thinking about it though, I don’t think you would use a tile toolpath. Maybe run it like two separate files, like you’re cutting two totally different projects. But I’m honestly not sure. Maybe someone else will chime in and offer a suggestion. Anyone???

  • @richardvosburgh7930
    @richardvosburgh7930 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you for the time supplying us this information, very interesting. I'm not tiling yet but this will be retained. Is it possible to adjust each tile, increasing tile 2 to get rid of tile three? As the information proceeded the need to remove tile 3 was not there, making my question moot.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Richard, great question! In this particular instance, tile 3 was just a byproduct of my adjusting the tile height to place the break between T1 and T2 in an area without any text.
      But more to the point of your question, let’s go back to my example. My sign was 60 inches long, and normally I’d set the tile height to be 30” which would creat 2 equally sized 30” tiles. However, there was text at the 30 inch mark, so I shortened my tile height to 29.5” to avoid the text.
      (T1) 29.5” + (T2) 29.5” + (T3) 1” = 60”
      I could’ve adjusted the tile height to 20” and had 3 equal tiles.
      20” + 20” + 20” = 60”
      If the sign had been 50” I could’ve set as: 30” + 20”, or 25” + 25”, or even 40” + 10”. Typically you’ll set your tile height at or near the maximum cutting capacity of your machine in the Y axis. Notice I said “typically”, but that’s not a solid rule that you MUST follow. Your tile heights are extremely flexible.
      I hope this answers your question, but if not, just let me know and I’ll try again. Thanks for watching!

      Eastern Red Cedar is plentiful here in Arkansas, and relatively inexpensive compared to most other common wood types. But there are many reasons I love working with it. Since it’s a softwood It’s super easy on my tools, and it carves great. Also, it’s just a beautiful wood that is weather and bug resistant, making it perfect for outdoor use.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I’m understanding your question, I’m gonna say no, that wouldn’t work. The reason for the tile cut is because the board was longer than the cutting area of my CNC. Realigning or moving the text in VCarve wouldn’t change the need to move the second half of the board into the cutting area. If I misunderstood your question please accept my apology and elaborate further.

    For tile 2, for time savings, couldn’t you have just run the 60° g code as the bit was in spindle after you rest tile 2 origin? Then you could run the end mill clearance and then 90° for the big coffee?

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I suppose I could have, but since I have a tool setter I save all of my tool paths into one file, and I just kept my normal tool sequence for the 2nd tile. Bit changes only take 30 seconds, anyway. I can live with that. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😊

    If the sign x axis was say 24” or wider with y axis length needing to be tiled then would you have to relocate the tool setter or go back to the block that does x,y, and z that comes with the onefinity to set the z?

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would just revert back to the Onefinity touch block (or paper method) to set the Z after each tool change.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork

      Yes, it definitely would fit at an angle, but tile cuts stick with the familiar X Y protocol followed by most cnc’ers and cnc manufacturers. I’m sure it could be done though, might make for an interesting experiment someday….🤔

    • @brianh.pittman2891
      @brianh.pittman2891 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. You could put a pin at the X/Y origin and have your tiles X/Y position predrilled into the board, but, you would have to be absolutely sure they are in the right place. I could see this on a project that might be a repetitive product (more than one of the same) but for a one off like what Marty is doing here, I believe his method saves a bit of time and unnecessary steps. Just my humble opinion.
