I never considered Dead silence as a bad horror movie. It is actually the first horror movie I watched alone and it was so creepy and the ending insane.
It was only called "bad" because it sadly came out a few years too early: in 2007 people just expected more Saw from James Waan. If he had made it in the wake of Insidious or Conjuring it would have gotten a lot more love. On the flip side, it not being a hit meant we were sparred horrible unnecessary sequels.

Sure, but that's not really a twist on the same level as some of the twists on this list. Real daughter dead, dad's wife is a puppet, those are real twists. Watched it during the peak of my weird doll phobia that got weird enough to turn me into a doll collector before I got past it lmao, it scared the shit out of me and somehow cemented my odd line of thinking that 'if they do end up coming to life and turning evil, the better I treat them the less likely it is they'll murder me too' that started with toy story and turned into paranoia with horror movies. Ended up loving dolls by the end of it but I treated my dolls better than any other toy solely to get on their good side on the off chance they were secretly haunted killer dolls 😂
Dead Silence is interesting because it's considered a "bad" movie but it's also like. Really scary, excellent, a little funny, in ways the best horror movies are. Maybe I need to give it a rewatch to know why people think it's bad.
Dead Silence is one of my favorite James Wan horror movies. The guy just understands the genre to perfection, taking all what makes horror good, from cheesyness to bizarreness to twists... I love it since its release... Malignant is as well a perfect example of taking influences from the 80s especially Henenlotter's films.
I remember fuming at Dracula 2000 because it makes vampires vulnerable to silver, which I consider an indication of either lazy writing or ignorance of the mythology. Near the end, though, they reveal the reason for this vulnerability and it entirely changed my attitude. It's still not exactly a great movie, but I ended up enjoying it.
Vulnerability to silver is far more accurate to actual Ancient Roman and medieval European vampire legends than vulnerability to sunlight (which even Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel didnt have, as it was invented by the maker of the movie _Nosferatu)._ In the Middle Ages, "vampire" and "werewolf" could overlap, as werewolves were usually created when someone was cursed or entered a pact with the Devil, and dead werewolves could rise as vampires. Medieval vampires were rotting bloated corpses, and silver, salt and garlic were thought to be effective against the "unclean" since people knew of the antisepsis/antibacterial properties of silver, salt and garlic even though they didn't know about the existence of bacteria... they thought diseases were caused by "imbalanced of the four humours in the body" or by curses or by "miasma" (bad smells, which were fought by strong-smelling herbs or burning incense).
Dead Silence is far from bad. Kinda feel like putting it at the top spot is unfair considering some of the other choices on this list. It’s a Mario Bava love letter that has enough mystery and plenty of spooky stuff that it works just fine.
Tale Of Two Sisters is such a good movie. What really annoyed me about the remake was how it screwed up the original movies ending, as The Uninvited stupidly tries to play that twist as if it's meant to unnerve the audience, but in Tale Of Two Sisters the ending is so tragic that you feel like your heart's been shattered into a million pieces when you first see the movie. Just hearing that score is enough to make me tear up at the memory of that ending.
My favorite kind of twist is when there's a seemingly localized phenomenon that's suddenly revealed to be way, way more widespread than you were led to believe. I'm thinking mainly of Kairo/Pulse, which starts out as a fairly normal ghost story until it finally pulls out to reveal that, oh shit, whole world's haunted and this is the end for us all. "Us" is a good example of this as well.
I like dead silence had great twist ending too and it my one of my personal favourite horror classic movie ever. I would love a spin off about Mary Shaw or a sequel too.
Wait wait wait....Didn't you guys put a video out not that long ago taking a elephant sized dump on the whole "Doctor Gordon is a Jigsaw Apprentice" reveal at the end of Saw 3D? Now it's the only thing that "saved" the film...

I will forever believe the older brother that OD'd killed Nicholas Barclay. Even though I fully believe that the French guy (I'm not saying his name) is a god-damned liar, I think there's enough evidence to show that he didn't just disappear. 1) The call that Nicholas had broken into the house a month after he'd disappeared, by the brother suspected of killing him. 2) Their absolute refusal to acknowledge that he was obviously not Nicholas. Including the mother throwing herself on the floor, kicking and screaming like a toddler, to get out of providing a blood sample.
What made orphan bad to me wasn’t the plot… it was the fact that the actress for Esther is visibly a grown woman now whereas in the first one which was yeaaaars ago, she looked like a kid. It was believable.

I really wish people who talked about movies would learn the definition of a plot "twist." Most of the entries here do not feature twists, they simply feature natural plot progression that is surprising to the viewer on a surface level, but is actually painstakingly set up and built towards by the rest of the film. At best some of these entries feature dramatic irony. But most of these are not twist endings, they're just endings. Endings that happen to be less formulaic than horror fans are used to, sure.
Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something the characters do not and it causes drama/tension. These examples are when pieces of information are revealed or connected in a surprising/unexpected way, which is precisely what a "plot twist" is. Good twists *do* feature the "natural plot progression," as you put it, which allows them to make sense. If you can see the clues on repeat viewing, all the better. If the twist is truly unnatural, it feels like the writer doesn't know what they're doing and didn't properly set up the twist.
@@TheDeconstructivist ok, you got me on the irony. But to be fair the only one I was considering irony was would you rather and I think I just assumed that the audience knew about the brother beforehand. I’ve never seen it. But I strongly disagree with your definition of a plot twist. A plot twist has to be radically different in tone or expected outcome. Google it. And these examples don’t feel radical at all. They feel like what we all knew was coming all along. I’m coming at this from a salty perspective as a writer where any reveal at the end of the plot is treated by the audience as a twist when that is simply not the case. Sometimes a writer just holds info back. Revealing it is not a twist it’s a plot device.
Sounds like you ascribe to the type of “plot twist” that Neil Simon lampooned in ‘Murder by Death’. Maybe give an example of a horror film with a proper plot twist?
@@ryanburkett949 I don't necessarily agree with you, but I don't entirely disagree either. But even given that definition there are at least three and I would argue four movies on this list that absolutely do not feature an unexpected ending. The first movie is just a straight up revenge movie: two teens do something stupid to harm someone else (perhaps the specific events surrounding the death of the wife and daughter are unexpected but the prank itself could only reasonably be expected to have a bad outcome) and one of the people harmed by them takes revenge. The only reason that outcome is unexpected to the characters is because they're too self-absorbed to ever consider how they may have hurt someone with their actions. For the second movie on the list, you can't say the ending is unexpected. The characters think they're on a reality show and then things start to go wrong (perhaps that's unexpected, but that's the inciting incident, not a twist) at that point the ONLY reasonable explanation is that the reality show was not as advertised and sold to the characters. Maybe the exact nature of that is not clearly definable before the ending, but the general idea that someone used a reality show to entice these people to a certain location to victimize them is entirely expected. Would you rather and Orphan are interesting debates. I would say both of those are ironic endings and therefore not twists, but I suppose they could still meet your loose definition of "unexpected" so I'll concede those two. But even still 2 on a list of 8 not fitting the criteria is not a good look.
I wouldn't consider "Uninvited" a horror movie as much as I would consider it a thriller. When you consider it that way, it makes the movie somewhat better.
The Orphan twist was kind of based on a true story. A French con artist pretended he was a boy who had gone missing from the US. The family accepted him back and said he was the son. He started to think they must know he wasn’t their son, and concluded the only reason they lied about it was because they wanted to convince people the son was alive. He and others theorized that he had been murdered by a family member. It was never actually proven that there was a murder, but someone saw that story and realized what a good movie it would make if the murder had actually happened. There’s a documentary about the case called The Imposter.
Dead Silence came out in the wrong time period if the movie came out today it would have been much bigger it's a ok film but that type of movie works more in today's time 2007 is a long time ago I remember all the commercials of the movie.
I don’t get all the hate Don’t Hang Up receives. I found it compelling the entire time. It’s a truly great movie that I recommend often. I’m also happy to see a horror movie plot twist list of any kind without Saw on it! I can’t understand why so many ppl cite that movie for a good example of a plot twist. It’s probably the worst plot twist ever. It makes zero sense and is so damn hard to believe that it actually made me hate the movie more.
Come on, Dead Silence was a good horror movie, the main theme song is up there with Halloween or The Exorcist for me. "Beware the stare of Mary Shaw, she had no children only dolls and if you see her in your dream, make sure you never ever scream"
I hated the twist in saw 3D it basically the same twist from Saw 2 with Amanda this idea a former victim became an apprentice it really takes the shock out of it….you may not have predicted the Doctor but it’s still a “you’ve down that twist already” moment to it.
I agree. And, correct me if I'm wrong because I joined the "Saw 3D" party a little late so I'm not sure, but - didn't everybody figure out that the twist was coming long before the film was even released, because they knew that Cary Elwes would be reappearing and concluded that he could more or less only be there to do one thing?
I saw My Little Eye YEARS ago, back in the early days of comcast ondemand! I've been trying to recall its title for the last 10+ years to no avail, but now I know!
How is Terrifier an "awful" horror film? It's one of the best slasher films in a long time, and a good slasher movie all it really needed to be. I also didn't think Dead Silence was particularly horrible.
Orphan wasn't bad. It kind of reminded me of The Good Son. Would You Rather was actually a good movie with a sad and depressing twist at the end. The best part of Dead Silence was the cop. He was hilarious.
The synopsis for Don't Hang Up is: "Teenage pranksters Brady Mannion, Sam Fuller, Jeff Mosley, and Roy, a.k.a. “PrankMonkey69”, successfully convince Mrs. Kolbein that an intruder is in her house and her daughter is in danger. The video of the prank phone call goes viral and the boys become well known on TH-cam." Then of course, the twist is that Mrs. Kolbein kills her daughter then herself due to her mistake... Yet, there is video evidence uploaded on the internet that these four boys caused the death of two individuals and police is not involved!?
I wouldn't consider Orphan First Kill or Would you rather's twists as surprising. To me they were glaringly obvious they were comming. Didn't expect the guy to be a puppet in dead silence tho.
Honestly I don't know why people say dead silence is a horrible movie, director cut is better but the fact that this was a horror movie that went back to the old days instead of the gory torture porn that we were getting with hostile and saw and so many I thought it was a breath of fresh air.
So I don't know the dynamic behind the scenes between writer of these list and the presenter, but wasn't the Dead Silence twist on Ash's dumbest horror movie plot twist list from last year? It was btw, lol, I watched it just before this one.
I’d have to say that calling the movies “awful” is a bit of an over exaggeration. I didn’t think any of these movies were unwatchable from start to finish, I think if anything they turn what were rather “tame” films into memorable ones. Also James Wan only directed “Dead Silence”, Leigh Whannell was the screenwriter, therefore the twist is really credited to him.
The personal irony for terrifier being on this list for me is that the twist is the reason why I hate it. I literally predicted once the opening ended, as it did what like 50 other horror movies have done before it....ps my personal opinion Terrifier/Art The Clown is extremely overrated
I like the uninvited but it does suck that people who don't know anything about mental illness will see people with trauma or dissociation as capable of murder
A lot of killers are fully lucid and aware of what they're doing, then just try the insanity defense but. We see plenty of true crime cases of "regular people" murdering and not having any signs of mental illness. Horror genre makes you think it's more common they have diagnoses
Orphans first kill would have been better if it was the son who was a psychopath and the mom was never in on it. Just Esther and the son having this cat and mouse game with each other.
Terrifier 2 is definitely not one of the best follow up movies ever💀 the first one was WAY better with a WAY less budget. The 2nd one just made 0 sense and was just “ let’s have art run through people super easy except for Sienna and her brother cause plot “

At best some of these entries feature dramatic irony. But most of these are not twist endings, they're just endings. Endings that happen to be less formulaic than horror fans are used to, sure.
If it is an unexpected development then that is the definition of a plot twist. If the ending is unexpected then that counts.
Im not listening to horror opinions from someone who thought dead silence was a bad movie. The hell. Lmao
I had extremely low expectations, but I wound up loving the first Terrifier.
Ahhhh... how wasn't malignant on this list...?
@@erikthompson619 that’s true as well
I wasn't even aware that people thought Dead Silence was a bad movie?
I saw My Little Eye YEARS ago, back in the early days of comcast ondemand! I've been trying to recall its title for the last 10+ years to no avail, but now I know!
How is Terrifier an "awful" horror film? It's one of the best slasher films in a long time, and a good slasher movie all it really needed to be. I also didn't think Dead Silence was particularly horrible.
Oh shit.. I wish I'd watched Don't Hang Up before this!! That's a wild plot twist.
I love how this channel has now delivered contradictory verdicts on the Saw 3D twist across videos. lmao
Dead Silence and Would You Rather were great movies. I'd like to know if the writer actually watched these movies.
Orphan wasn't bad. It kind of reminded me of The Good Son.
Would You Rather was actually a good movie with a sad and depressing twist at the end.
The best part of Dead Silence was the cop. He was hilarious.
Midnight Meat Train may have the best unexpected ending I’ve ever seen.
Never thought Dead Silence was a bad movie. Then again, I watch very little horror.
'Dead Silence' was a mediocre horror movie to sit through but that ending made my jaw drop. Like, why didn't I see that coming!?
You guys are much better than WatchMojo.
I literally involuntarily half yelled “oh come on!” When Dr Gordon appeared. I thought that was one of the most asinine plot twists ever.
So, is The Uninvited the western version of A Tale of Two Sisters?
Yes, and like most remakes, the orginal is far superior.
Apparently, yes.
I wouldn't consider Orphan First Kill or Would you rather's twists as surprising. To me they were glaringly obvious they were comming. Didn't expect the guy to be a puppet in dead silence tho.
Honestly I don't know why people say dead silence is a horrible movie, director cut is better but the fact that this was a horror movie that went back to the old days instead of the gory torture porn that we were getting with hostile and saw and so many
I thought it was a breath of fresh air.
So I don't know the dynamic behind the scenes between writer of these list and the presenter, but wasn't the Dead Silence twist on Ash's dumbest horror movie plot twist list from last year? It was btw, lol, I watched it just before this one.
Really I didn't think the first terrifier was bad I thought it was good for what it was
Dead Silence is terrifying! I HATE ventriloquist dolls
Dead silence is just Tooo Underrated 🤬
Don't know what people drink while watching Dead silence!!
It's Awesome!
The Dont Hang Up segement made me think of the SNL prank show with Christopher Walken. I pranked him! I pranked him with a tire iron! Woowii, zoahwoei
Orphan First Kill is fun and campy. It's not a great movie, but not terrible.
Seeing Chester in Saw 3D 🥲😇
I haven't seen Don't Hang Up, but your description sounds exactly like a r/nosleep story I heard a while ago.
Terrifier is better than it's sequel, fight me!
Agreed
Terrifer and Would You Rather are both fun films. Perfect? No. Awful? Absolutely not.
I can rewatch both happily. Very poor choices for this list
Terrifier and Would You Rather are both great films! They shouldn’t be on this list!
Another day of me having to come to this channel and ask who the hell picks these list
The Uninvited is a remake of the AWESOME movie "A tale of two sisters"
THAT is a movie I would recommend
"I mean no one wants to admit they ate 9 cans of ravioli"
The personal irony for terrifier being on this list for me is that the twist is the reason why I hate it. I literally predicted once the opening ended, as it did what like 50 other horror movies have done before it....ps my personal opinion Terrifier/Art The Clown is extremely overrated
Dead Silence was a great horror movie and I'm not 100% on the movie would have been awful without the ending twist.
Dead Silence is a great horror movie imo.
Iris will still need that money dealing with hospital insurance and the bills that follow.
Yeah The Uninvited it was okay although the Korean movie that it's based off of is much better.
The Uninvited is not awful it has mixed reviews so has Terrifier and also Orphan First Kill isn’t awful either
Orphans first kill would have been better if it was the son who was a psychopath and the mom was never in on it. Just Esther and the son having this cat and mouse game with each other.
My Little Eye also has a very young Bradley Cooper... Useless info 😁
Terrifier 2 is definitely not one of the best follow up movies ever💀 the first one was WAY better with a WAY less budget. The 2nd one just made 0 sense and was just “ let’s have art run through people super easy except for Sienna and her brother cause plot “
I actually enjoyed quite a few of these...
Was that Chester? Fuck man.
