    I absolutely love dressing up for formal nights. I know some people do not like to dress up and that is fine by me. “You do you.”

    I enjoy dressing up. I know it is not for everyone, but like you said, it’s feels nice to dress up once in a while.

    My wife and I enjoy dressing up for dinner on formal nights. I don't wear a tux but always have a sport jacket slacks tie and she wears a dress. And we have cruise for a while and the one thing we really dislike is this anytime dining. I don't know what's going on with these cruise lines but I for one enjoy having the same waiter every night and being forced to be social with the same people. We've always found that no matter who they sit us with we have a great time and believe me in today's world 95% of people need to get their face out of their phone and learn how to communicate like human beings again :-)

    When I first started cruising I brought a suit for formal night. Then one cruise my suit was damaged somehow getting to my state room. I looked around on different cruise lines that I was on in the dinning room on formal night and notice very few were dressing up. I now only wear slacks, shirt and tie. I am on a cruise for relaxation, pay good money to cruise and don’t care for ship telling me I have to dress up on certain nights. The kicker is I was on Holland America, went to casual night dinner and was kicked out for wearing dress shorts!

      We agree 100 percent. Same thing happened to me on a RCCL cruise. Wore a suit the first formal night and noticed others were NOT. No more suits in suitcase. We are on vacation.

      I think allowances should be made for some shorts. I can wear Bermuda shorts with a blazer and bow tie, but that wouldn't be acceptable even on a casual night in some ships.

    I've been cruising on and off since December of 2000. Cruising has changed a LOT in those 21 years, and most of the changes are not for the better. But the one change that has been a HUGE improvement is the relaxing of dress codes. We're on vacation folks, I don't need to wear a suit and tie while on vacation. Now that doesn't mean I need to look like a beach bum when I go to the main dining room, but it's not an all or nothing proposition. You can "dress up" without being formal.

    If you don’t like formal nights, go on a cruise that doesn’t have them. If you sign up for a cruise that has formal nights, then dress up.

      Carnival is the cheapest cruise line. Many other cruise lined require even regular casual days for you to dress business casualish (cunard)

  • @2000konnie

    Good topic, Chris. It has been debated since I went on my first cruise over 25 years ago. On my first cruise, which was the Carnival Holiday, men were not allowed in the main dining room at dinner with shorts. I remember that because my husband was turned away, and he went back to the cabin and changed into long pants. We didn't complain, we just weren't aware of that rule. -- Anyway, I do not think the cruise lines will ever give up formal nights because they make money from the professional photography sales. Also, even though I used to complain about "formal" nights, it's actually IMO a great tradition. Those who can't even be bothered to wear business casual clothes can always dine in the buffett or other locations. -- I believe in moderation. No one is expected to "dress to the nines" in gowns and tuxes. Diners are only expected to be dressed nice. -- In my first few cruises, we dressed up: me in cocktail dress and him in a suit with tie. -- After I started cruising solo, I now wear nice black slacks and cocktail style top for the dining room evenings. So kind of every night is "formal" night for me in a sense, except for the last night because I'm wearing the clothes for the next day as the rest is packed.

    We cruise mainly carnival and have found the dress code to be fairly casual. We will wear “ our Sunday best” not a suit or evening gown. We still eat in the dining room and we don’t feel out of place. Many people do dress for the “ prom” but I don’t feel it’s necessary and I very much still enjoy the lobster. Lol

    We are going on an Alaskan cruise (on Princess) and I will wear a nice blouse & slacks on formal night. My husband will wear nice pants, and dress shirt with a pullover sweater. We can only pack so much since we are flying & we will need layers & rain gear for the climate. There is no way we are going to try to pack a suit & gown.

    Carnival promotes the fun aspect of its cruises. Fun is very subjective.
    I enjoy eating lobster or prime rib in casual wear. Polo or button down over colored tee, jeans or khakis, plain socks and loafers.
    But if that was unacceptable in the main dining area I'd be fine eating in the buffet or maybe grabbing sushi that night.

    I am someone who loves vintage menswear and think the casualization of our attire throughout society is a negative on the whole. I frequently cruise on NCL and no matter whether it is "formal night" or not I dress in a tuxedo for most dinners (I have black, ivory, and velvet burgundy dinner jackets), other times I dress in a full suit. The only time I do not is if I am going to Teppanyaki, where I wear polos and shorts as it is very casual. I think the cruise lines should encourage guests to wear these formal outfits for dinner in all dining rooms, and in the main dining room at the very least they should have a collared shirt and slacks dress code. Embarkation Day is the exception, as traditionally guests would not change on embarkation day as their luggage may not have arrived at their staterooms. I have to say I do wish more people dressed more formally for cruise ships, and took some time to dress up for themselves but also for the other guests. I think dressing up is a sign of respect for oneself and others. I wish I did walk into Cagney's dressed in my tuxedo, surrounded by other guests in their formal attire as well. Society wants this. How many times have you heard people say of bygone years, "oh, they dressed so nicely then," or "I wish I could go to a dinner/dancing supper club." Everyone wants to go back to experience those times, but no one puts the effort in to do so.
    On NCL I am in the clear minority when it comes to how I dress, but I think it is proper to wear these things in keeping with maritime tradition, and because I wish society was still more traditional and formal as a whole. When I look around nowadays, I'll see most men in tee-shirts, even at Cagney's! However, there is still a handful of men who will wear at the very least a jacket and collared shirt. Interestingly, I will usually see more women dressed in formal attire compared to the men.
    I think there needs to be room for personal preference on a cruise. However, I do support the following dress codes for men in these locations every evening (except Embarkation Day/Night Before Disembarkation where more casual options should be open due to unpacking/packing of luggage): 1) High-End Specialty Restaurants: Formal Evening Wear (Full Fig White Tie Attire/Tuxedos) Exception: Full Suits - Coats, Slacks, and Ties for guests who do not have more formal attire, 2) Main Dining Room: Formal Evening Wear Encouraged; Collared Button Down Shirts and Slacks as a minimum, 3) Casual Specialty Restaurants: Polo Shirts, Dress Shorts as a minimum.

      Amen to everything you said, I will be sailing on Norwegian in September and along with my Double Breasted Suit I’ll have a White Dinner Jacket Tux and a sport coat with a few pairs of slacks. Whenever I’m going to a nice restaurant I’m always in a suit and tie. I think to myself why are the Ladies so dressed up but their men don’t even try?? Also why is the bar set so low these days?

  • @gma2one
    @gma2one 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My husband has a black tux and a white dinner jacket both bought for formal nights. We always dress for the first formal night, but they’ve made the 2nd one more like a shirt and tie/dressy tops etc instead of full on formal night. We got off the Symphony 2 weeks ago and didn’t even dress up at all for second one. I think it’s your choice. If you enjoy it, do it, if not don’t.

    California Linda shares this is a Carnival cruise line, everything is more relaxed with its clientele. I believe smart casual is best for this ship. We sail primarily Princess which says no jeans on formal night, a pair of dockers slacks and a dress shirt, short or long sleeved, is more in line with those of us who do enjoy dressing as for a formal wedding. Those who want to wear the neck noose do with a jacket or sweater, and a few may wear a jacket with tails. It's a fun evening and people watching at it's best on these evenings. During the day cargo pants and shorts with a sleeved t-shirt is quite appropriate. Remember it's your vacation and do you, but don't spoil the moment for others as they do them.

    Royal Caribbean years ago enforced men wear jackets, women dresses. Now anything goes. I loved looking at the younger women who wore their prom dresses It is nice to see a more upscale look other than jeans.
    Probably in this day and age elegant night is old fashioned. If you are on Oceania or Regent you must dress up. Or suite restaurants on NCL or Celebrity.

    We have been on 14 cruise ships after the first 3 or 4 time getting dressed up and pictures taken that was enough . So we find a alternate option like the buffet. Also we don't like setting with strangers. If you want to more power to you lots of people love. Especially the first timers.

    I think Men and Women should dress for dinner every night but for Elegant Night definitely suits or tuxes for men and gowns for ladies. Why is the bar set so low for dress standards these days??

    On Carnival, they have "my time" dining in a separate dining room. Here is an idea let these folks come as they are so scheduled dining and specialty dinners can go semi-formal. I personally do not like formal night however it's not all about me. Compromise, we all paid to have a fun vacation now let's have it!!!

    Formal night on P+O means just that. If you don't follow the dress code then all of the main and speciality dining is closed to you as well as some of the bars as well. Not as stuffy as Cunard but still the expectation is there.

    I wouldnt mind formal night if every photographer wouldnt set up in every walk way. Just got off the Mardi Gras and it to 20 mins or more to move only 50 yards. And even with masks the smell of perfume and cologne was so overwhelming went to the casino to let the smoke level out the smells lmao

  • @robertkuwada2579

    Why can't people just go with dress codes or any rules on cruises? No one makes anyone cruise so why not just conform or not cruise?

  • @sth4678
    @sth4678 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And for all the lil trolls that say just dont cruise on a ship with formal nights just because I dont like one event in one or two nights doesn't mean the rest of the cruise is a fantastic time. Best escape is the casino or out on my balcony.

      I disagree. We eat with more than our mouths. We eat with our eyes and our nose too. Our whole mindset and the ambiance of the room can affect how we taste and perceive a meal. Dining is all about the experience as well as the food. Why do you think restaurants spend much time on things like decor? Why do you think some of our most powerful memories with family is around the dinner table or surrounded by a specific food or recipe? I think dressing up does indeed make the dinner taste better in many ways.

      Carol King-Our last 2 and our upcoming cruise will be to Alaska. It's hard enough packing a 50 pound suitcase to stay warm in September, let alone pack formal wear. We mailed home 5 boxes of souvenirs last time. Kaki pants and button down shirt, maybe a tie for men. A nice dress or pantsuit for ladies. Carnival lets you go casual first night at steakhouse.
