- The first step of to improve your location portraits is to be comfortable with being out in the open and knowing you're going to face a whole range of challenges. Getting great location portraits is a combination of good lighting, the right camera settings and thinking about your backgrounds and Gavin Hoey is here to help make that easy.
Starting with lighting, Gavin shows how avoiding direct sunlight is a quick tip to make better portraits on location. Finding shade or creating your own is the first step, but camera settings will also make a difference. Gavin shows how a blur background effect can be achieved by correct use of aperture but also by thinking about focal length and subject to camera distance.
Of course, not all locations have the prefect background, so Gavin has two top tips to get you back on track. The first is to find a mini location within the location. Gavin recommends looking for a background that’s simple in style but still complimentary to your subject. Finally, there’s one background that’s always there and that’s the sky. As Gavin demonstrates, using the sky as your background is a skill that can really save the day on your next portrait session.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Gavin Hoey's videos are the Gold Standard of photo tutorials
Thank you 😊
Gavin is the Best - I have been watching Gavin's videos for probably 10 years now and he just brings the information out in an easy to understand way and I love his demeanor. Please keep them coming!
Thank you. I'll keep going as long as you keep watching and Adorama will have me around (the last two are sort of connected 😉)
Oooh, love the flash with the sky showing!
It is always refreshing to see a Gavin Hooey video. Thanks man!
Great tips, and stunning photos. Also a beautiful model.
Tnanks Gavin.
Congratulations on finding a sunny day during this so-called "British Summer". Fabulous images as always with you and Chloe !
Not sure it was a whole sunny day Alan but it was at least dry 😎
Gavin is the MAN.... I always off forward to his videos...
Gavin always manages to make photography fun :)
so great to see you outdoors.
ive had some great results with strong direct sunlight with no modifiers but i certainly had to work harder to get the results i wanted.
Chloe of course steals the show!
i love it
It is Always a great pleasure to see your photography👏Greetings from Rome, Italy👍📸
Very informative as I'm starting in location portrait photography soon
Love it! I have my first on site fashion shoot coming up soon and this knowledge is just what I needed. Now I'm going to practice. Thanks for sharing.
Practice is the key. Enjoy the fashion shoot 👍
Always nice to see the Hoey family helping out.
Usually they behind the camera but they're always there 👍
Great video love the low angle stuff, nice work
Thank you, intertaining and a lot of information! Just don’t disregard direct sunlight shots completely, they are the grain of salt in your day‘s portfolio to make it interesting.
Awesome Job guys, I appreciate your work and time tremendously
Amazing video! I love it
Very informative compact video... Chloe looks awesome.
Bravo, Gavin!... And of course Chloe. ;)
Nice outfit chloe . i love yr videos Gavin thank you .
Always appreciate your full explanations, Gavin, keeping your voice slow enough for even me to follow.
I used to be told I talk to fast but perhaps some of todays TH-camrs are even faster!
Great tips! Wonderful back yard/garden.Thanks for sharing
Thank you 👍
Always enjoyable videos and this is exactly what im hoping to do soon. I have two 5:1 diffusers/reflectors and a speedlight. Hoping for earlier golden hour or even into blue
Great video Gavin. Many thanks. Glad you had some semi-decent weather. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Andy
Thanks Andy and yes the weather played ball for once 👍
Great video Gavin Chloe and team ! now get in out of the rain 😀💦💦
Just watching few minutes of video. Just got good refresher techniques. Thanks.
Thanks Joseph 👍
That smiling Chloe against the bush - perfectly beautiful!

Maaaaaaagic ! I adore your so educational vdozzzz 👍
Glad to hear I've been of help 🧙♂
Amazing
Thank you
Love your videos! I have trouble using my xplor 300 on location. Not sure if it's because i'm using small softbox or if it's my settings
Very nice Sir Gavin, as always....
Thanks Del, as always 😊
Useful, as always, and many thanks, of course to the 'amazing/awesome Chloe'. Good to see you using the Fujifilm X-H2, for a change, along with 2 of the lenses that I also use regularly with this camera. My question is, however, why do you find it necessary - not for the first time - to denigrate the British weather? I am sure that you get sunny days where you are in the country just as we do here in North Norfolk!
Shooting mid-day when the sun is at its peak is always a little tricky. Good tips Gavin
Midday sun is never ideal and yet that what I find myself stuck with more often then not!
Gavin turns grey and Chloe more mature now, time flies so fast
Another great tutorial Gavin. The UK seems to have rain every day lately 🙁
Thanks and yes, it feels like the wettest early Summer for a good while... so a hosepipe ban is probably just around the corner 😉
Another helpful video Gavin, thank you. Slowly learning with your help. What have you done to Chloe’s tattoos though?
That was all Chloe's work. I believe she needed some portfolio images with her tattoos covered.
"How much do you need?" All of it!
You have the "SUN" in UK Gavin? What a big surprise 😁👍. Great videos as always!
We had enough sun at the end of May for me to think Summer was here... but sadly it didn't last.
Why are you using fujifilm, once in a while?
Thanks for sharing some super tips and tricks.
Hi Kenneth., good question. I've exclusively used Olympus / OM System for about 8 years so it's about time I looked at what else is available (and how it compares). So I borrowed a Sony in March and a Fuji in May.
@@GavinHoey Ok, I'm a Fuji shooter my self, and love them. I stil own 3 olympus OM2n analog cameras, that gets lots of love as well. Thanks again for sharing your videoes.
@@GavinHoey what is it about OM that makes you want to look elsewhere? Is it the lack of DoF control, resolution, AF, or something else???
I was pleasantly surprised to see you shooting with Fujifilm!
Hi Greg. I was also pleasantly surprised to be using a Fuji. Unfortunately it was only on loan but a nice camera to try 👍
Very Cool and Good Video
As I said in my first comment, yesterday, another useful and informative video, for which many thanks! As on so many of your videos, much of the success of your presentations relies on the experience and professionalism of your model. I know you have made a video, in the past, on 'working with your first real model' and how valuable it is to do so, but have you made one on finding your model in the first place? If not, is this something you would consider? I can see how working with someone like Chloe would be extremely beneficial but, as a complete beginner in this business of contacting professional models (despite being very ancient in photography and years) I don't know how to go about this, and, as an amateur, is this even possible?
Here you go :) th-cam.com/video/o3ZVRq_Kqw4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7ClcdrzjSkOooV6g&t=88
Since you are using a flash, with that wide of a depth of field, normally you would be having to shoot at 1/250 or 1/200 of a second shutter before loosing sync with your camera. I know you can either shoot in high speed sync and shoot at a high shutter speed, or use an ND filter to cut the light going into the lens. Whenever I shoot with settings similar to yours with the fill flash, it's too bright. Which would you recommend, an ND filter or High Speed Sync?
Both work well once you master the technique, so which ever feels best for you and your flash gear is the way to go. Personally I prefer HSS as it's built right in to the flash / transmitter, so no extra kit needed.
Awesome video (as usual ;) ) do you mind letting me know which color simulation do you use?
I processed the RAW files to my taste so I guess the colour simulation would be "Me"
How did you end up from 1/250 at 2.8 to 1/6400 at 1.2 with same exposure practically.. as far as the background goes..
I also don’t know how it wasn’t blown out at 1/250 mindblown
Great images, Gavin! Thanks for the inspiration!
As always, great video, great tips!! Thank Gavin!!!
Besides the great video, did you move from Olympus to Fuji?
No, OM System (Olympus) was filming the video and will return as my photo camera. However I'm currently in a position where I can try out other brands and I'm doing just that 👍
Another great video. Tell me, is it normal for English backyards to look, well, "overgrown"?
It is for us 😉 Google "rewilding" and you'll get an insight into why the overgrown look.
@@GavinHoey ok thanks. We can’t really do that here in Oz. For one, there’s the risk of snakes, type of which can kill you just by looking at you!
Aussies love to mow their lawns within an inch of their lives. And it looks crap during summer.
Well done Sir! Great to see you once again.
Great video, again 👍🏻
Have you changed camera brand? No more Oly?
If you mean OM System it was right beside me the whole time (Main filming cameras) and is back in my hand now my Fuji loaner has gone back.
Will a Fuji be coming back?
Wish Chloe come to Cambridge
Scatto sempre con i flash per ottenere il risultato lowkey che è il mio stile. se possibile utilizzare la modalità hss, è meglio utilizzarla oppure meglio lavorare fisso al sincroflash e quindi lavorare solamente col diaframma?
Oh come on… can Chloe take a bad picture? Great video Gavin, I always pick up a hint a two and many times something new from Adorama too.
I've given Chloe my camera before and can confirm that yes, Chloe can take a bad photo... when I'm the model 😉
@@GavinHoey HA HA HA… Ok, I think you may have a point. But is that the photographer or model then that is the factor? 🤣 Let’s just keep Chloe in front of and you behind the camera. 📸 Take care, can’t wait for another great video!
Hmmm....Someone's rockin' a new Fuji X-H2. Is this new or borrowed? Nice pics btw.
Borrowed for now. The Fuji X-H2 had lots of really great features I've not experienced before.
Great video Gavin good results.
Thanks John 👍
Thanks for another informative video, Gavin and Chloe.
Great work as usual.
Good stuff as always, Gav!
Didn’t you use the little flowers as foreground and the model sitting?
Not this time.
Your shooting with a fuji x h2 with a max flash sync of 1/250 th of a second yet your data says 1/800 even 1/4000 th @ iso 200
so you didnt use flash in those the reflector?
Great photo shoot you 2 are great
The Amazing Chloe. And some other blah blah blah about cameras and pictures, or something. 😁
I never realised he is based in the UK
Wow! Just went to TH-cam and here is the exact video I was looking for!
Thanks.
Was it coincidence or is Adorama reading your mind 🤣
बड़े से बड़े संकट से निकलने का उपाय
Did Gavin use an ND filter
No ND filters, just HSS flash were necessary.
No More OM System gavin?
Brilliant.
This video was cool and refreshing. 😎
Thanks Marcus 👍
Gavin you are the best
Thank you Steve 😊
First.
Super as always ❤
ALWAYS INSPIRING!!!!
Awesome Gavin
Wait...what did i hear on 1:40 ? Had to laugh, sorry :D
Fantastic
Hoey always uses a light meter inside. Too bad he didn't go over the light meter while outside!
That sounds like something for another video, this one was aimed at more general / less technical audience.
Olympus?
Not Olympus but the main cameras for filming were all OM System OM-1's 👍
Is this your garden? Not jealous at all…
It is our garden 👍
CHLOE GETS SOME SUN! YAAAAAY
