Improve Your Location Portraits in JUST 4 Ways! | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • The first step of to improve your location portraits is to be comfortable with being out in the open and knowing you're going to face a whole range of challenges. Getting great location portraits is a combination of good lighting, the right camera settings and thinking about your backgrounds and Gavin Hoey is here to help make that easy.
    Starting with lighting, Gavin shows how avoiding direct sunlight is a quick tip to make better portraits on location. Finding shade or creating your own is the first step, but camera settings will also make a difference. Gavin shows how a blur background effect can be achieved by correct use of aperture but also by thinking about focal length and subject to camera distance.
    Of course, not all locations have the prefect background, so Gavin has two top tips to get you back on track. The first is to find a mini location within the location. Gavin recommends looking for a background that’s simple in style but still complimentary to your subject. Finally, there’s one background that’s always there and that’s the sky. As Gavin demonstrates, using the sky as your background is a skill that can really save the day on your next portrait session.
    Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to TH-cam. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.

Good to see you using the Fujifilm X-H2, for a change, along with 2 of the lenses that I also use regularly with this camera. I am sure that you get sunny days where you are in the country just as we do here in North Norfolk!

    As I said in my first comment, yesterday, another useful and informative video, for which many thanks! As on so many of your videos, much of the success of your presentations relies on the experience and professionalism of your model. I know you have made a video, in the past, on 'working with your first real model' and how valuable it is to do so, but have you made one on finding your model in the first place? If not, is this something you would consider? I can see how working with someone like Chloe would be extremely beneficial but, as a complete beginner in this business of contacting professional models (despite being very ancient in photography and years) I don't know how to go about this, and, as an amateur, is this even possible?

    Since you are using a flash, with that wide of a depth of field, normally you would be having to shoot at 1/250 or 1/200 of a second shutter before loosing sync with your camera. I know you can either shoot in high speed sync and shoot at a high shutter speed, or use an ND filter to cut the light going into the lens. Whenever I shoot with settings similar to yours with the fill flash, it's too bright. Which would you recommend, an ND filter or High Speed Sync?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey หลายเดือนก่อน

      Both work well once you master the technique, so which ever feels best for you and your flash gear is the way to go. Personally I prefer HSS as it's built right in to the flash / transmitter, so no extra kit needed.
