Some Say This is Neal A. Maxwell's Greatest Talk Ever Given | "Why Not Now" October 1974

  • My brothers and sisters, I should like to speak of and to a particular group of important individuals. These are they who fully intend, someday, to begin to believe and/or to be active in the Church. But not yet! These are not bad individuals, but good individuals who simply do not know how much better they could be. Such individuals often stay proximate to-but do not participate fully in-the Church. They will not come inside the chapel, but neither do they leave its porch. These are they who need and are needed by the Church, but who, in part, “live without God in the world.”

"Do not let yourself reflect too much on the social, economic and political indicators that suggest the gathering storm, lest you realize there is an inseparable connection between the keeping of the commandments and the well-being of society." Truer words were never spoken, even nearly forty years ago.

Many years ago Elder Maxwell came to the stakes in Minnesota for a regional conference. At the end of the Saturday priesthood leadership session, he provided an apostolic blessing. He blessed our children, that if they strayed from the covenant path, they would experience the bitter and be enticed to return. He promised us to recall that moment every time for the rest of our lives whenever we heard the song, ‘O My Father’. I am a witness of the efficacy and literal fulfillment of apostolic blessings. They are yet another way that Heavenly Father and the Savior increase our testimony and bless their children. They want us to come out of the church courtyard and porch and into the chapel. More true than ever in 2021.

I joined the Church in June, 1974, and moved to Utah in 1975. Elder Maxwell was one of my favorite speakers, and I couldn't begin to choose a favorite talk. I was blessed to get a job in the church offices in SLC, working as a typesetter for the Seminary & Institute Dept. One day, a couple of girls I worked with, along with myself, got an ice cream cone to finish our lunch, and while heading back up the elevator, Elder Maxwell got in, looked at our cones and said, "Those look good. Did you bring me one?" Then he got off on the floor he needed and told us to have a blessed day. That will stick with me forever!

We were so blessed to have Neil Maxwell come to our little, isolated stake in Colorado. My husband was inactive and somehow I made it to Stake Conference. What a miracle for me! He spoke beautifully of course, but he left the most amazing blessing on us, I've never forgotten it. Our stake covered 80 square miles; rural areas of farms, ranches and mines. The building was full, and it changed us immensely.

In the Pentecostal church I grew up in we sang a hymn titled Why Not Tonight. There does come a time when we must choose who we will serve. By not choosing, we are really choosing. I played my mandolin when but a young boy then guitar as a teenager as the congregation would sing. The problem with procrastination is time, or the lack thereof later. I “sat on the porch” many years before going in. Glad i was blessed with enough time to do that.

“Random individual goodness is not enough in the fight against evil.”
The gospel is a tool of salvation, the church does not gate keep to prevent people from living whatever lifestyle they want. The church exists so that once we are converted, we can strengthen our brethren. We would not want to win salvation alone, the heavenly party would not be the same without all your friends there.

Great talk. But I'm reminded again how appalling 70s fashions were - collars on our shirts were long, or round and never aged well. Thank you Heavenly Father for sharing this wonderful man with us for a season.

No doubt this is a great talk. I love all of his talks, but my go-to is "Swallowed up in the will of the Father". It has been my personal favorite.

Thank you for beautiful talk. I like when he said I believe, Help thu my unblieve. I believe in Jesus Christ but I doubt sometimes because of my trials in my life. 👼😊🌸
