I must say, your journey to Raven Crag was absolutely mesmerizing! The misty morning start created such a magical atmosphere, and those Autumn colors were a feast for the eyes. It's great to know that the longer, less steep route offers such outstanding views. The mist swirling around the reservoir was like something out of a fantasy movie, and the entire landscape resembled a beautiful painting. I totally agree with you about Autumn - it's a season that truly brings out the best in nature. The vibrant colors and the soft light make everything look so enchanting. I can't wait to see more of your adventures in the UK. Your final Wainwright walk sounds like a fantastic plan, and I hope it's a memorable one. Count me in if the date works! 😊 Thanks for sharing this incredible journey with us, Alan. It's always a pleasure to join you on your hikes and witness the breathtaking beauty of the outdoors. Wishing you a fantastic week and enjoy your trip with Mrs. Metalman! 🍂🏞👍
Thanks so much for watching and your very kind words, which I appreciate. It was such a good day to go for a hike, perfect walking weather for me, albeit really chilly when I set off. My first time out hiking after a 6 weeks layoff after my operation, so that made it even more special, cheers Alan
Like 147 👍 Greetings from Naples, Florida. That was an awesome hike. What a beautiful Autumn Day! The view of the mist at 1:33 is awesome. One spectacular sight after another there. Thanks for sharing with us, have a great weekend. 💯
Thanks for visiting, really appreciate you taking the time to stop by and this was such a great days hiking, especially after having to have 6 weeks out after my operation, cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it and it was such a magical day out, especially as I had been took no hiking for 6 weeks after my operation, this was my first hike afterwards. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
So nice to be back out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks out after my operation. Hard to have picked a better day to be fair, the colours were amazing, as was the scenery. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
I was blown away by it and also the route up, I knew about the steep route but real pleased I found this one,, so much better. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
WOW Alan, smart taking the less road traveled, much better for the knee's...take care of them...I can attest! Those views were amazing...I am so happy to have been able to be walking with you to see these stunning views today...58 more did you say...and then you're going to take on some friends to walk along with you...how awesome! I hope to be here watching...that will be wonderful...I do hope I understood that properly! Loved how you took a self portrait! Great meeting some fans on the way down....til next time!
Thanks so much for stopping by and yes, you got that right. There was a famous hiker and writer called Alfred Wainwright who documented 214 summit Fells in the Lake District, which he described as the best and most scenic, so a lot of pole today try and do all 214 of them and I am 58 away from completing all of them myself. It is a tradition that you invite friend and family on your last one to share it with you. Fingers crossed I can finish them by next year, cheers Alan
Thank you! You too and I love this time of the year when you have the colour in the trees and the leaves are just starting to fall, such a magical time. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Thank you very much, I really enjoyed it, especially as it my first hike out for 6 weeks after my operation, could not have picked a better day. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
I was real pleased I took this route up, spoke to 4 different couples/people who all took the steep route up and did not enjoy it, especially with all the early morning frost about. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Thanks for watching Carroll and man that was one long 6 weeks out, especially as I missed out on so many really nice and sunny days too. Really enjoyed this hike and a first time I had done this one as well, which made it even better. Cheers Alan
Starting off the day with some incredible views! The mist on the water is always a special site. Doing the group walk for the very last one is a great idea and something special. Wow, look at the views from the end - no wonder this place is so popular! Stunning!
Couldn't agree more and it was so nice get get back out hiking again after a long 6 weeks out after my operation. Could not have picked a better day for it either, dam cold but really scenic. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Fantastic morning! Enjoying the whole journey experience is what I enjoy, the destination is only a small part. Absolutely beautiful views!! Those views really give a person a spiritual experience! Marvelous stuff!! Bruce and Otis
Wow! Those colors are POPPING there right now! How stunning! Had to giggle - seeing you in your winter gear & clothing is how we are used to seeing most of your videos - - looks like you are back in them! Love that you get out on those chilly days and take us all along!
Thank you so much and this was the first really cold day of the Autumn (Fall) and I had to scrap the frost off the car before I got out. I was super excited at getting back out again, it was a long 6 weeks of inactivate when I had to rest my leg. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Absolutely off the charts - what a hike! Love the way you make your amazing walks appear so achievable to anyone with just a reasonable level of fitness ATB Steve
It was a really good days hiking and really achievable to anyone as long as they stay clear from that really steep route, the route I took was so much easier and had the best views as well. Real good of you to stop my and drop a comment, appreciate it, cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it and a very first visit for me, one of those you keep driving past but real pleased I decided to actually stop and do it this time. Brilliant views from the top but real pleased I missed out the steep way up. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
First really cold day and I had to scrap the frost off my car before setting off but what a great days hiking it was. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Really enjoyed joining you on your walk Alan, the views were well worth your efforts. Great that you arranged a fly past to sign off with, a fitting end to a great walk.
Glad you enjoyed it and and yes, I thought that fly past was a nice touch too lol. A real nice days hiking and those views were amazing, I really enjoyed it. Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, real good of you and very much appreciated, cheers Alan
Fabulous hike. The rugged landscape is so impressive! Beautiful views of the surrounding area. Amazing mountains, lake and sky. Really enjoyed joining you on your walk. Have a great day Alan!
Thank you very much, you too! A perfect hiking day for me, nice and crisp but nice and clear, so I could really appreciate those great views I got. Real good of you to stop by, cheers Alan
We drove along that closed road many years ago and a Stag jumped right over our car...seriously, you wouldn't believe it but it actually happened....always best to think about your knees and take a gentler route...That view of Thirlmere from the summit is one of the best in the whole Lake district....i remember the Bonny lads camping in that spot you mentioned....what a view to wake too.
Oh I believe you as two of them jumped over my bonnet on the way to work one morning, got the shock of my life what what a great experience, just wish I had a dash cam in those days. You can still drive to the base but not over the dam anymore, which is blocked off to everything expect hikers. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Thanks Anthony, I really need a kick up the behind, making to many bad weather excuses, especially as I really want to finish next year. Hope to see you out again sometime soon. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Coming soon, just need a bit better weather, sick of the wind and the rain and the clocks going back next weekend, I hate the dark nights. Still, got luck on this day last week, need more days like this one. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
It sure was, especially when you consider how long ago it was build, real impressive. Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, very much appreciated, cheers Alan
Wow that is so beautiful, like the song, “ Smoke on the Water”. Such a cute road to follow. Fun to meet some friends along the way 😮💨what a fantastic walk and time meeting some hikers. Great day Alan! I always feel like I am on the trail with you! Cheers💜
Thanks for visiting, real good of you and it was so cool to be back out hiking again after a long 6 weeks off after my operation. The weather started off dam cold but was great once I started hiking and the views I got were amazing. Cheers Alan
No problem, life gets in the way at times and I always just do what I can. and as I remember this was my first hike after a lay off, due to having an operation - man it was good to get back to it. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
When I saw the next days weather I was pleased, as I would really like you to do it on a real nice clear day, as the views are amazing. It was real nice to meet you both and I know the bad weather would not put you off visiting again, as, just like me (living in the North of England) you are used to bad weather lol. Real nice of you to watch and take the time to leave a comment, very much appreciated cheers Alan
Wow, we knew this was going to be a good walk right from the start seeing that mist on the water, just gorgeous!😍. Really fancy this route, it is so scenic, the views down over thirlmere, you were right, unbelievable! Love it when the light hits the Lakeland landscape just right like this, looks like a painting doesn't it. Spot on on the wild camping advice, some people have to ruin it for the rest of us that respect the environment, we were probably thinking of the same word!😂. We have a busy year next year, but we would love to join you on your last wainwright if the date suits🤞. Either way, we are very sure you won't be on your own😂👊👍. Really enjoyed this one, Lakeland at its best 👌. Thanks for taking us along, All the best, and of course enjoy your trip with Mrs metalman, Shell and Pete😊👊👍
That would be great to finally meet up and I really hope I can finish them all next year. So nice to be back out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks out after my operation and it was such a great day out too, the colours were amazing, as was the scenery and real pleased I chose the route I did, as everyone I spoke too on the summit said they had gone up the steep way and not enjoyed it at all. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Yes it sure was and it was a Hercules, first time I have seen one so close up. Real good days hiking, first one in 6 weeks too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it Judy it was such a nice walk, great route to the top and so nice to meet some real nice people on the way too. Thanks so much for stopping by, take care, cheers Alan
Fabulous hike, Alan! Great advice about choosing the longer, less steep route. The views from there were outstanding. It was lovely to see the mist swirling around at the beginning and the wonderful Autumn colours starting to emerge. Thank you for another very enjoyable blog ❤
Glad you enjoyed it and that you so much for stopping by, real good of you. Such a good days hiking, especially as it has been 6 weeks since I was last out, made it all even more special. Cheers Alan
Thanks for answering my question Alan! Delighted to hear about your plan for your last Wainwright. I'll certainly be coming along if the date suits. Great to see you back out. Superb video once again 😊
Thanks very much for watching Nicola and I appreciate you asking it as it was your question that put it in my mind. Just need to get my finger out now lol, cheers Alan
Looking a bit chilly and frosty. Perfect hiking weather for me. Beautiful area for a hike. Nice longer route chosen. typically, going up is no problem it is the going down that destroys my knees. Great hike with fantastic views. Great to meet like minded people on the trail too. I like the wooded and rocky areas of this hike. Awesome hike. Have a great day.
Totally agree and real pleased I took the longer but much gentler route to the top. First time I have been up there despite driving passed it for years and turned out to be so much better than I was expecting, which is always a bonus. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Oh brilliant, how great to see you back in the lakes after what seems an age (must feel longer to you I’m sure). Oh and YES, yes please, I’d love to join you on your final Wainwright …going up High Rigg … I’ll be watching even closer now, joining in on your countdown. The views you got on this day were stupendous. The mist on the lake and crisp light make it so worthwhile getting up so early. I have to admit I’m one of those people who go up the steep route. The daft thing is when I go up, I think “crikey this is steep” then go exactly the same way the next time 😂😂 What a numpty … I’ll be checking out the Alan Metalman way for my next trip 😃. Whenever I pass Thirlmere I think of all those thirsty people in Manchester and how lucky to get your water from there … all downhill .. amazing. I did do a mega linear hike up there last summer … all the normally boggy fells were dry as a crisp … won’t be at the moment… so ticked off Armboth, High Tove, High Seat, Bleaberry Fell, Walla Crag and walked down into Keswick … a long day. If you’re looking for a shorter trip I do recommend the less well known Birkett of Fisher Crag. It’s about half way along Thirlmere with fabulous views. And that reminds me “Look at that gorgeous sight, & Thirlmere as well” ace haha made me laugh .. so true 😃 Superb way to finish with a fly past. Hope you both enjoy your hotel break away … have fun 🎉
I need to also do Armboth Fell and High Tove but will leave them to a drought next year or if we get a big freeze as I have heard before about how boggy they are. Also heard about some of the bad descents off some of the Fells from Seathwaite Farm which I need to do, so any local knowledge would be appreciated, as that is the reason I have been putting them off, especially solo hiking. It was so nice to get back out again and that 6 weeks sure did drag over, especially as we had a couple of real nice days I could have been out getting more of these knocked off. We are both really looking forward to Broadoaks tomorrow, been there before and had a wonderful time but has to be almost 10 years ago now. Thanks very much for watching and roll on High Rig, as I want to get these knocked off ASAP now, cheers Alan
On nicer one Simon, I really need to start getting my finger out as it would be so nice to finish next summer. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Looked like a fabulous place Alan, I could see the frost on the ground where you started ! Haha that cow did wake you up, it made me jump too ! 😄 That dam footage with the mountains was gorgeous and its fed a long way by the sound of it :) Love the coloured fallen leaves I agree, and the mist is lovely. 😊 I am sure you will get a lot of people out with you for group hike for the last Wainwright and it will be great to watch :) The summit of Raven Crag was amazing with the autumnal colours and views and the place where that couple were standing would be great to wild camp. So nice that you met that couple to chat with and advise. That was sooo beautiful and nice to meet the rugby fans ( rest in peace Wales and England 🙁) That was great, hope you enjoy or enjoyed your time away with MrsM and hope she's feeling better :) ~ Anna 👍
Yes, it's about 98 miles all the way down to Manchester, so some feat or engineering. Such a nice walk this was and so quiet too with the route I took, which was even better than I was hoping for. I always enjoy a chat when I bump into people on the trail and the two couples I met were both great. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Good to hear you both got up and down safely as they wind was really starting to blow when I met you both and I always enjoy a scenic way up and down, so much better for the soul. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, real good of you and very much appreciated, cheers Alan
3:00 Still so much green ..... 4:20 Sure is lovely ..... 6:40 That look's like MAGIC !!!!! ..... 7:05 Even MORE SO !!!!!! .... 8:10 Everything look's like a painting .... 13:15 Just incredible ..... 14:01 DUCK POUTING would be MOST FOWL !!!!!! ....... 18:25 That was nice .... 19:05 That was COOL !!!!
Most fowl indeed lol but the rest of the day was pure magic, really enjoyed it, especially as this was my first hike in 6 weeks, that was driving me nutso lol. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Hi Alan. My oh my, that mist coming up from Thirlmere made for cracking start to your walk. Beautiful. Knocking on a bit myself I fully concur with your thoughts how lucky we are to experience such magical moments. I took my grandson up the steep route but we came down via the forest track along the same route that you took. I figure if there's any falling to be done it's usually coming down. Anyway you're right the views all along that forest track are truly magnificent. We were lucky in that there was no one at the the top when we got there so no pouting ha ha. That's some view though isn't it. Breathtaking. What a spot to have your butties and linger for an hour.
My friend broke her ankle 100 yards from the bottom, coming down the steep route, at the beginning of the year and her foot is still not right now, so no way I I going up or down that way. Real pleased I didn't to be honest as I really enjoyed that forest walk up, such a great day in which to do it too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Aye, It's a great forest track that with super views. I'm always super careful coming down any steep track. I usually adopt a sitting on my bottom and kind of sliding down if you know what I mean. The problem with that Raven Crag steep route is the loose scree makes it a bit dangerous coming down. I still think coming down from Haystacks leading to Scarth Gap is a bit dodgy. Good luck and keep the cracking videos coming. Cheers David
Hi, nice to meet you. We have never been here before but would love to now we saw your video. The route looks fantastic. Wow what a view at the top 😮have the best day. Chelsea and Mike
Thanks so much for stopping by, real good of you to take the time to leave a comment as well, real nice of you. It was such a good days hiking, especially as I had not been able to hike for 6 weeks after an operation, so it was real nice to get back out again. Cheers Alan
Fantastic walk, Alan. Going up the more gentle route sounds like a much more agreeable route. The mist on the reservoir had me wishing I was there with a camera even before the autumn colours. Have a great weekend with Mrs. M.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks we will. A much better albeit longer route to the top but I was happy enough with that, cannot see the point of slogging away looking at my feet all day. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
The views are simply awesome. I watched the video Sunday morning, but got caught up in some repairs here at the farm. I still have to send a comment to Chris at Blot Outdoors.🤙
Not watched the latest from Chris yet but will do when we get back as we are way at the moment. Blown away by the views on this one and enjoyed it all the more as I had not been out for 6 weeks after my operation, so good to get back out again. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Beautiful sight with the mist rising from the water like that!! The longer, safer way up was definitely well worth it! You did have a very nice view at the top! It's good that you met some nice people along the hike a couple of times. Very cool, Alan!!
Glad you enjoyed it Eric and my first time out in 6 weeks after my operation, made all the more enjoyable with this great hike, loved the weather and the views I got. Appreciate you stopping by, cheers Alan
My thoughts went to The Mists of Avalon. Waiting for something magical to turn up. Happy you can finally be back to hiking. And it was wonderful views from many spots. Enjoy next adventure with Mrs Metalman. Cheers 😄🖤🦇🖤
It was so nice to be back out again, it was a long 6 weeks doing nothing, which I hated. A real magical start with the mist lilting off the waters I was expecting King Arthurs sword to rise above the waters, how cool would that have been! Mrs Metalman is sure excited about next week, it should be a great stay. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Well done, Alan, super video, and full of chat! Andrea and I watched this together so she kept making observations! We sat where you sat for about 30 mins and only saw 2-3 people. Going down we met quite a crowd and we learnt later that a lady broke her ankle coming down that afternoon and was airlifted to hospital. You definitely got great views of Thirlmere on the way up and down using your route but as you'll see next weekend we went the "Steep" way and the path was steep! I had a bit of a rant to myself about the boardwalk but do see it's advantages. Now, what i got excited about was your idea for a group walk. We parked at Legburthwaite car park, very close to where you parked and there's room for 20-30 cars in there. What you need to do is time your wainwright challenge just right so that when we come in the summer it's your last one! no pressure but either way i think i could talk Andrea into coming for the occasion! She wants to get to 100 and is currently at 89. All the best with your quest, regards, Ashley
Yes I know that lady who broke her ankle on the way down, as she has her own channel and she was only 100 foot from the bottom too, still not walking normally and not hiking at all now, which is such a shame. I would love to get a day like this one and do it in the summer just need to get cracking on those three areas I mentioned ASAP but the weather is awful here at the moment. It would be brilliant if you both could make my final Wainwright but obviously understand if you cannot make it. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Alan, I should have my Raven Crag video ready for friday, lots of very similar pics and comments!! The only other thought I have on this walk was the number of people we met, up and down, without proper footwear or poles. Perhaps the boardwalk bit makes them think its all easy but the steep bit isn't easy at all. You need the right gear for every walk. Ashley
Spot on Alan, cracking route up that, views were amazing, especially with that mist covered reservoir 👌, that is a great spot for a camp, but a bet it’s a very popular area, atb Mick 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Mick and appreciate you watching buddy. Yes, a popular place to camp and you can see why, it's a beauty but too many people are spoiling it with BBQs and fires, leaving a right mess, which is such a shame for all the decent wildcamper. Cheers Alan
Hi Alan and what a nice frosty start to your walk. I’ve always in the past driven round on that far side road of Thirlmere. Parked at that little layby and afterward could access the main road over the dam. However, believe you can’t do that anymore. I’ve only ever ascended Raven Crag via the steep route but your route looked very scenic indeed. The summit of Raven Crag looked as I remembered it, totally beautiful. Great film Alan and it’s definitely worth FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yes you can still drive in to both car parks but no access over the dam anymore, hikers only. First time up there for me and I loved the route I took to the top, so nice to be able to walk and check out the views at the same time, instead of watching your boots all the time. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
What a nice route and climb that is, will have to do that one next time. Managed to get to the lakes for a weekend 2 weeks ago, stayed at the RavenStone Manor hotel, wonderful hotel especially if you have dogs. At the base of Skiddaw so climbed that via Ullock, Longside,Carlside, it was horrendous weather but me and my wife loved it, thick fog and 50mph winds lol. Back to the lakes in April so keep taking me back there Alan in my living room until i get there next, most appreciated. All the best.
Nice one and sounds a nice stay too, not sure about those conditions to Ullock Pike, Longside and Carlside mind but remember doing them with Chris from BLOT Outdoors in freezing conditions too. Yes, real nice route up, much better than I was expecting, which is always a nice surprise. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
I really need to get my finger out as I so want to finish next year but lost so much time this summer with the bad weather. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
I usually reserved your route of ascent for descent! Either way it's a fantastic view from the top. I climbed on Raven Crag back in the late 70's, it's a serious spot! Thanks for taking us along on your walk, ATB Alistair 👍
That's funny Alistair I was just thinking of you yesterday and how quiet you had been on your channel, so I hope all is well. I loved the route up and the same route down too, better for my knees and eyes, as the views were amazing. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Got to love those fresh misty mornings Alan , pretty special to take it all in . Autumn really does give us some amazing colours and scenes. Stunning views from the summits and basically everywhere you looked lol 📷👍 another belter Alan atb Dave
Glad you enjoyed it Dave and first time I had to scrap the frost off the car before I could get away this Autumn. Great to be back out hiking again after 6 weeks off after my operation and even better to get a great summit view too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Hello Alan. You really know how to find nice places to hike. I'm not sure if it's dew or frost at the beginning of your video...at the end winter is coming. The road to the top is beautiful, but the view of the lake from the top is magical. It was worth getting up early. We also love meeting new people when we hike and then you realize that each of them has their own reason for hiking and each has their own beautiful story. Now let's see your last video. Cheers. Sretana and Zac. 🍻
It was frost and the first really cold morning of the Autumn, so I had to scrap my car before I set off. A really enjoyable day and my first hike for 6 weeks, which made it even more enjoyable. Thanks very much for stopping by, cheers Alan
That would be very much appreciated too Max lol. A real good days hiking made even better by seeing that Hercules flying overhead at the end. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Beautiful hike that Alan! Might do Raven Crag next time we're in that area. I dragged Maria up Raise and Whiteside last time, and I'm pretty sure she'd prefer this walk! 👍😁
You should, especially this route Des, really nice and quiet and you are getting those great views all the time, I really enjoyed this so much more than I was expecting. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Hi Alan, nice to see you back in the fells after your layoff, think i will follow your route when i do this fell, lovely quiet route with great views, but you now have told everyone will be far busier now LOL, with free parking as well, wonderful walk and video cheers nigel
Haha, I have been told off for that before lol but it is (imo) the best and the safest route to the top. I have a friend who broke her ankle coming down the steep way this year, so no way was I chancing that route. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Sounds like lots of great tips Alan. Oooh is that this year, we've not had a frost yet in South Lincs. The dam is stunning and so still. Wow you got some stunning views from Raven Crag. Shame about the folks that have fires up there, no idea what they could be creating! You have lots of great plans for next year. Have a great Saturday.
Yes, about 6 years ago there was a massive Fell fire there caused by someone with a BBQ, which is such a shame as it is such a fantastic view point up there. Real nice of you to stop by, appreciate it, cheers Alan
Oh nice one, it will be great to see you both again and I need to get my finger out and get some good weather too, I really want to finish next year, especially as I am not getting any younger lol. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Great video Alan. Another one in the bag. You will easily get all the Wainwrights finished next year! I’m down in Teesdale this week and got some nice walks planned. Can’t wait. Enjoy your time away with your good wife.
Sounds great and fingers crossed for some nice weather for you, it's been nice today, the rest of the week looks a bit iffy. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Love those stunning fall views. Had to laugh with the guests on this episode. 🐄 🐑 Also laughed about the guy who snuck up on you lol. Lots of funny parts in this one.
Glad you enjoyed it and I was so pleased to be able to get back out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks off after my operation. Real good of you to stop by, cheers Alan
I can tell you now you may be surprised how many turn up. I will. Enjoy the other 58. This is a super video. I always watch them and follow your guidance as always. I do think when I do my hikes, one day I might bump in to you 😂
Well as long as I am not stood there my myself Julie, now that would be embarrassing lol. I hope I can make it for next year and you and others can turn up and share that moment with me to make it even more special. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
🤣🤣🤣. Flippin vicious cows! 🤣🤣🤣 Beautiful walk mate. Misty mornings are the absolute best ever. Gorgeous mate Just loved this one. Too effort again - good to be out again Alan 👍👍 Good luck on the rest of the Wainwrights. Would love to try and get to your final one 👍👍👍 Gorgeous colours out there mate. Lovely words too.
That would be great if you could, I would hate to be standing there by myself lol. That cow gave me a right start, I thought it had jumped the fence and was after me! Quality day out, especially after 6 weeks out. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it and I know I sure did, been a long 6 weeks out so it was an extra special walk for me me and so nice the weather played ball too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Sounds great Phil and it would be real nice to chat with you again, hopefully for a bit longer next time too. Need to get my finger out as I would love to finish them all next summer. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Amazing looking views Alan :D the scenery is out of this world :) the view at 6.25 was absolutely stunning :D those colours are absolutely unreal! Really enjoyed this hike with you and seeing more of these beautiful places in the UK x
Glad you enjoyed it, real nice of you to stop by. It was so nice to be back out again after a long 6 weeks out after my operation, which made it even more special, cheers Alan
Hey Alan, great video as usual. Stunning mist on the water first thing and lovely Autumn colours, great time of year for a walk. My wife and myself went up Raven Crag earlier this year, we went up the steep way but my wife didn't want to come back the same way due to her knees so we came down your route which we loved and you are right, there were better views. I totally get what you say about the western fells, so far for us also so hardly go, we aren't going to do all the Wainwrighs but I would still like to do some of the fells over that way. Good luck for the coming year and hitting that 214. Loved the video mate, take care
So pleased I did not do that steep route, I spoke to 4 people who had come up that way and not liked it, especially with the morning frost as well, making it real slippery. I was hoping to spend a few days camping over Wastdale and knocking a good few out while I was there but the summer weather was pants, so it will have to wait till next year now. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Hey Alan 😊 you got a great day to do this walk. It’s such a fab view isn’t it over there. I went up and down the steep way. But it was super busy the day I went and lots of families about. If I remember the steep route was actually a bit quieter. I agree when I went up Raven crag people left frying pans and all sorts up there from there camp. Such a shame when people leave evidence of a camp behind them. Not far to go with your wainwright list Alan. Yes I haven’t done many that side of the lakes as the drive is so long. Done scarfell but that’s it. I always enjoy your videos Alan nice watch 😁
Yes, really need to start concentration of those 3 areas I mentioned, especially Wastwater but it is such a long way, expensive and not many that you can do 2 or 3 at a time. Just got to hope for lots of good weather the rest of this year and the beginning of next year, especially as I am not getting any younger lol. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Great to see you back out in the fells where you belong. That frost looks very appealing. Gosh the colours are popping in the frost. Nice welcmoo the crag. Look at that mist over the water, superb. We have the OS maps app now, its brilliant for finding hikes in an area. This is a really autumnal route. Feel like we are going to miss Autumn completely in the East. Smashing views of Thirlmere. Great tips on Helvellyn, ive always fancied it from this side. Always count your blessings. Nice meeting on the fells with the rugby league couple. 👍
So nice to be back out, a long 6 weeks in inactivity, which I did not enjoy at all especially when I was missing some real nice days too. I love OS Maps although sometimes it is far too easy to plan a walk which turns out to be more than you expected, as it looks so easy on the map. I met two really nice couples on this walk and had a real good natter with both, always enjoy that. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
You and me both, the way I avoided was very steep indeed, so I much preferred the route I took and it was much more scenic too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it Ian and a first ever visit for me, one of those you keep driving passed and saying one day, so real pleased I did it and also real pleased with the route I took, it was brilliant. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Thanks very much for watching Linda and hopefully this video did not bring back bad memories for you. It would be great to have you join me and (hopefully) a few others on Hight Rigg, my final Wainwright, cheers Alan
Good stuff Alan, Raven Crag has got to be the best bang for buck on views in the lakes. I parked on the little free car park you spotted as you can come in on the other road but I walked the steep route, I did nearly come down that way but had a pint with my name on waiting in Keswick haha. Not many left now Alan, keep chipping away mate 👍
Such a shame the summer weather was so naff as I was really knocking them out at the beginning for the year but fingers crossed for next year. A great route up and a brilliant view - well happy with both. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Hi there Alan. Wonderful video. I’ve not done Raven Crag yet, but when I do I’ll certainly do that route. You got some wonderful views and lucky enough to see a Hercules on its low level training, brilliant stuff! 👍 All the best Dave 😀⛰🥾
Aw I wondered what plane it was but really lucky to time it right to see it and what a noise it made over over head. Fingers crossed you get the same great weather Dave and that is one sweet route to the top. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMANthe aircraft is an Atlas A400 bigger than the C130 Hercules of which the RAF don’t have any as they were retired in summer 2023. USAF have them still and operate out of RAF Mildenhall….they do fly through there but that’s definitely the a400(been very close underneath one in Wales.) Great video by the way and helps me to find a route up next time I’m up to do a bit of plane spotting. Did Great How in December 2022 but the sun was in the wrong position for best photos of the aircraft.
Lovely walk Alan and what a great way to do it. I lugged my camping kit up the steep route and it killed me lol! Stunning views and the group walk sounds brilliant 😊 Lovely video as always 😊
You are a machine! I spoke to 4 people who all went up the steep route and hated it but I knew I was not going up that way as a friend broke her ankle coming down the steep way (with a camping pack un) less that 100 foot from the bottom at the beginning of the year and she is still struggling to walk properly and not back hiking/camping again yet, which is a dam shame. The easy way is always the best way for me, especially as I am not as young and fit as you 😊. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
wow those early morning autumn conditions are stunning. The vapor on the water, the frost, the autumn colours and the light, totally stunning. I have no idea why everyone loves summer so much when autumn makes everything look so much better (and in your video clearly the cows and sheep were also fully appreciating the wonders of autumn). So many stunning views in this video made me jealous im not there. great video as always, have a super week, cheers from barnyz
Glad you enjoyed it and it was so nicer to be out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks off. The weather could not have been better and this is the part of Autumn that I love, when all the colour is in the trees. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
I went up Raven Crag a few months ago, but the route I used was an easier one. I got the 555 bus to Shoulthwaite Farm, and used the public foopath that goes through the farm, leading to the forest road, and followed that up. Really gentle climb, until the steps near the summit. The views aren't as good on the way up, you don't get to see Thirlmere until you get to the top.
Oh nice one that sounds a real good route too. Initially I was going up the steep route but real pleased I changed it at the last minute, especially with all the early frost about. Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, very much appreciated, cheers Alan
Hi Alan Welcome back!!! Wowow, you look cold...bundle up with the winter jacket and hoody? I thought it is simply beautiful, mysterious to watch you and the fog retreating to the air in the background 2:27 wow..I enjoy aweee moments. I enjoy the reflection of the sky on the lake in distance. 6:31 Gopro doesn't do justice with poor natural light. I am certain you have the best view in front of you. Gorgeous!!! 7:49, 12:57 majestic!! Wow, Mr. Alan you have already planning for 2024!!! Way to go! How lovely to see the fall foliage along the hike. Well I look forward to the Hotel review with Mrs. Metalman in the future. BTW, how do your Gopro batteries perform in the cold temperature. In my case, the batteries don't last well in the hot temperature when I kayak. It is getting worse and K7S plans to swipe them all to new ones. Thank YOU, Mr. Alan Well done. Pleasure watching YOU. Sorry I came down with cold and took me longer to catching up.
I hope you are feeling better now and it was the first really cold day of the Autumn (Fall) as I had to scrape the frost of the car before I set out. The new GoPro batteries are much better than the previous ones but still not very good (imo). To save the batteries I always turn off the front facing display, which does use up a lot of battery power. It was so nice to get back out hiking again, first time in 6 weeks. Take care, thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Beautiful way to spend the day Alan! Wonderful fall colors all around! I’m with you taking the longer, but gentler way up to the top… you had some wonderful views of the reservoir… and I really loved seeing the rising mist first thing in the morning. Good to hear about all your plans for next year… driving 3 1/2 hours is a long way to go for a hike… do you drive there and back in one day? I’m about that far from Rainier and St. Helens. In the summer I try to camp nearby for a night or two so I don’t have to drive over and back in one day. Your group hike finale sounds like so much fun! 🌟🌟👍👍 Cheers, Jen 😄
I did intend to camp a few nights over there this summer but the weather was pants, so did not get one of them done over there. Been over there twice last year, doing 7 hours driving each time and then climbing a monster all in one (very long) day, getting too much at my age now to be honest. Really hope I can finish all 214 Wainwright summits next year, a real achievement. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Hi Alan. Great Autumnal colours and fantastic views. I did Raven Crag up the "steep route" before I started filming. After I completed the Wainwrights I started doing other categories such as Birketts, Nuttalls, Deweys, etc, so went over to Castle Crag (ancient fort) and the summit of The Benn (th-cam.com/video/R0KBtoOCzmo/w-d-xo.html). We did a VERY good walk from Wasdale Head today (video should be out next Sunday) up to Lingmell via Piers Gill. I can thoroughly recommend this route (it has a short scramble) and can easily be extended to include Scafell Pike. I'd be interested in joining you on your final Wainwright walk and maybe in a colab wild camp, if you would be interested. Kind regards, Tony.
Thanks very much for watching Tony, I have two of your videos on my watch list and as well as being a fair-weather hiker, I am a fair-weather wild camper as well lol. Never really thought about the Birketts, Nuttalls and Deweys but may be something I do look at in the future, cheers Alan

Thank YOU :o)
Thanks for sharing this incredible journey with us, Alan.

Greetings from Naples, Florida.
Beautiful day for being out! Enjoyed the views, colors and the athmosphere... Beautifully filmed Alan, enjoyed watching...Take care..
Glad you enjoyed it and it was such a magical day out, especially as I had been took no hiking for 6 weeks after my operation, this was my first hike afterwards. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
The autumn colors are breathtaking! 🍂 Can't wait for more hikes. 🌄
So nice to be back out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks out after my operation. Hard to have picked a better day to be fair, the colours were amazing, as was the scenery. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Looks cold Alan - great upload - like 134 with a full view as always
Thanks for the visit Mark and first time this Autumn scrapping the frost off the car lol, cheers Alan
That view is just priceless. Wow.
I was blown away by it and also the route up, I knew about the steep route but real pleased I found this one,, so much better. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN I actually watched this again. I can't wait to see the videos from you next year finishing up the Wainwright's.
Great video! Thank you very much for sharing! Beautiful views! Like 131
Thanks for visiting, really appreciate you stopping by. It was great to be out hiking again after 6 week off, really enjoyed it too, cheers Alan
Such a beautiful hike !!!! I love Autumn it is a great time of the year. Have a happy day.
Thank you! You too and I love this time of the year when you have the colour in the trees and the leaves are just starting to fall, such a magical time. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Beautiful colors and the mist coming off of the water was awesome.
Thank you very much, I really enjoyed it, especially as it my first hike out for 6 weeks after my operation, could not have picked a better day. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Nice one Alan. It is certainly a more inviting way up. Thanks for sharing.
I was real pleased I took this route up, spoke to 4 different couples/people who all took the steep route up and did not enjoy it, especially with all the early morning frost about. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Beautiful day to enjoy the trails. A very beautiful trail. Glad to see you out and about again. Thanks for sharing the video.
Beautiful very nice ❤❤
It was such a nice day, great weather, great route and such a nice view from the top. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Fantastic morning! Enjoying the whole journey experience is what I enjoy, the destination is only a small part. Absolutely beautiful views!! Those views really give a person a spiritual experience! Marvelous stuff!! Bruce and Otis
Thanks very much for watching and it was such a nice morning hiking, first time I had been out in 6 weeks and I sure did miss it, cheers Alan
Very interesting way. Nice sharing my friend! I wish you a great time 🦇 👍
Thank you! You too! Real nice of you to stop by and drop a comment, appreciate it, cheers Alan
A very gorgeous morning, and some lovely fall color as well!
Oh yeah, I loved I loved both and so nice to be out hiking again after a long 6 weeks off. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Real good of you to stop my and drop a comment, appreciate it, cheers Alan
what a nice overlooking scenery my friend love you hiking adventures
Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, very much appreciated, cheers Alan
nice one great season for a walk in the lakes👌 superb views from raven crag👍
Glad you enjoyed it and a very first visit for me, one of those you keep driving past but real pleased I decided to actually stop and do it this time. Brilliant views from the top but real pleased I missed out the steep way up. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Outstanding
Thanks for watching Dave, good of you buddy, cheers Alan

Nice cold day for a hike. Thank you for sharing Alan, and take care 👍
Those views! It looks so nice, what a stunning landscape, it's really pretty 🤩🙌
Thanks for visiting, real good of you to watch and take the time to leave a comment, very much appreciate, cheers Alan
Wonderful scenic route up Alan, good luck finishing your Wainwrights👍👍
Thanks Anthony, I really need a kick up the behind, making to many bad weather excuses, especially as I really want to finish next year. Hope to see you out again sometime soon. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Loved the video but can't wait to watch your upcoming walks in the future from Seathwaite, the Langdales and Wastwater👍
Coming soon, just need a bit better weather, sick of the wind and the rain and the clocks going back next weekend, I hate the dark nights. Still, got luck on this day last week, need more days like this one. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Just finishing Alan 6 full views - all the best
Oh that's real nice of you Mark and very much appreciated, cheers Alan

Wow that is so beautiful, like the song, “ Smoke on the Water”. Such a cute road to follow. Fun to meet some friends along the way 😮💨what a fantastic walk and time meeting some hikers. Great day Alan! I always feel like I am on the trail with you! Cheers💜
Thanks for visiting, real good of you and it was so cool to be back out hiking again after a long 6 weeks off after my operation. The weather started off dam cold but was great once I started hiking and the views I got were amazing. Cheers Alan
Beautiful video Alan. I have a bunch of videos to get caught up on. If you don't have the time to comment back, no worries brother.
No problem, life gets in the way at times and I always just do what I can. and as I remember this was my first hike after a lay off, due to having an operation - man it was good to get back to it. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan
Lovely meeting you Alan, we didn’t go for Helvellyn but it’s first on the list for the next time we are back in the Lake District!
Thanks for taking us along,
All the best, and of course enjoy your trip with Mrs metalman,
Shell and Pete😊👊👍
That would be great to finally meet up and I really hope I can finish them all next year. So nice to be back out hiking again after a very long 6 weeks out after my operation and it was such a great day out too, the colours were amazing, as was the scenery and real pleased I chose the route I did, as everyone I spoke too on the summit said they had gone up the steep way and not enjoyed it at all. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Man that plane was loud. Awesome hike and you do have of beautiful view in you videos.
Yes it sure was and it was a Hercules, first time I have seen one so close up. Real good days hiking, first one in 6 weeks too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
thank you for taking me on a beautiful journey. Thank you so very much Alan and God Bless
Glad you enjoyed it Judy it was such a nice walk, great route to the top and so nice to meet some real nice people on the way too. Thanks so much for stopping by, take care, cheers Alan
Loved that video, thank you I really enjoyed watching it.
Glad you enjoyed it and real good of you to watch and leave a comment too, very much appreciated, cheers Alan
Fantastic Alan, I’ll definitely be joining you on your final WR, it’ll be an honour 👍
That dam footage with the mountains was gorgeous and its fed a long way by the sound of it :) Love the coloured fallen leaves I agree, and the mist is lovely. 😊 I am sure you will get a lot of people out with you for group hike for the last Wainwright and it will be great to watch :)
The summit of Raven Crag was amazing with the autumnal colours and views and the place where that couple were standing would be great to wild camp.
Great video Alan. It was lovely to meet you on our way up. Dad and I decided to come back down via the scenic way.
Good to hear you both got up and down safely as they wind was really starting to blow when I met you both and I always enjoy a scenic way up and down, so much better for the soul. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, real good of you and very much appreciated, cheers Alan

Most fowl indeed lol but the rest of the day was pure magic, really enjoyed it, especially as this was my first hike in 6 weeks, that was driving me nutso lol. Thanks so much for stopping by, cheers Alan

Hey Alan, do you use any other social media? I didn't find it
Great video alan.sounds amazing to do all the wainrights next year 👏
I really need to get my finger out as I so want to finish next year but lost so much time this summer with the bad weather. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
Sangat indah
Appreciate you stopping by and leaving a comment, good of you, cheers Alan
Thanks very much for stopping by, cheers Alan
big like my friend 😊
Big thanks John, really appreciate you stopping by, cheers Alan
Brilliant hike... Hey my friend If I had an outdoor supply company I would certainly find your channel worth sponsoring.
That would be very much appreciated too Max lol. A real good days hiking made even better by seeing that Hercules flying overhead at the end. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Such a beautiful upload Alan, views and overall scenery here are beyond spectacular! The surrounding hills look incredibly beautiful in the fog 👏👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it and it was so nice to be back out again after 6 weeks of enforced inactivity.
Sharon, Jurgen and myself will join you on High Rigg 😁👌
Nice 👍 👍
Thanks for the visit, real good of you, cheers Alan
Love those stunning fall views. Had to laugh with the guests on this episode. 🐄 🐑
Also laughed about the guy who snuck up on you lol.
Beautiful walk mate. Misty mornings are the absolute best ever. Gorgeous mate
Just loved this one. Too effort again - good to be out again Alan 👍👍
Good luck on the rest of the Wainwrights. Would love to try and get to your final one 👍👍👍
Gorgeous colours out there mate.
Lovely words too.
That would be great if you could, I would hate to be standing there by myself lol. That cow gave me a right start, I thought it had jumped the fence and was after me! Quality day out, especially after 6 weeks out. Thanks so much for watching, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN top effort. Your legs must have felt like lead 😃😃. Those cows do that deliberately you know 👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan - LOL!
Lovely walk Alan, thanks for taking us along with you. Definitely a good’en 😊
Glad you enjoyed it and I know I sure did, been a long 6 weeks out so it was an extra special walk for me me and so nice the weather played ball too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Fabulous video Alan!
I’d love to join you on High Rigg after following you up and down Little Mell 😊
That looked like an amazing hike! I'd rather walk longer and less up hill myself!
You and me both, the way I avoided was very steep indeed, so I much preferred the route I took and it was much more scenic too. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Great video once again Alan . Raven Crags a brilliant viewpoint I think I've done it more than any other Wainwright.
Glad you enjoyed it Ian and a first ever visit for me, one of those you keep driving passed and saying one day, so real pleased I did it and also real pleased with the route I took, it was brilliant. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN I've never done it the way you did it . May give that way a go next time .
@AlanMETALMAN oh and High Rigg is an excellent choice for 214 I hope I can be there .
@@IanSiverwood_SilvoTours - me too, I do not want to be there by myself LOL!
High Rigg sounds good. I have been there but would like to do it again with you (and crowds). :)
All the best
Dave 😀⛰🥾
Good to see you out on the fells, I can definitely recommend the Langdale Valley some amazing Wainwrights out that way
Really looking forward to doing them all, as I have only walked along the valley bottom there. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
Gopro doesn't do justice with poor natural light.
Kind regards,
Tony.
Thanks very much for watching Tony, I have two of your videos on my watch list and as well as being a fair-weather hiker, I am a fair-weather wild camper as well lol. Never really thought about the Birketts, Nuttalls and Deweys but may be something I do look at in the future, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN Hope you enjoy the vids.
