Thank you for sharing your story! I have/had tendonitis and I rested my hand for a month now and today it came back, I should work on my technique.. Also I feel the same way about the fact that every time I am edited to practice the hand hurts more too. This video is really helpful.
Man I get this. I had Dequeveins tenosynovitis which is connected to a thumb wrist connection issue and it messed with me for 2 years. It wasn’t till I fully stopped for a while that it actually healed properly. It was brutal.
I've been playing piano for about 40 years. I've been dealing with tendonitis for the past 6 months, and also had some episodes about a year before that. My piano teacher switched me over to the Taubman method when I was probably in middle school. I guess I felt like it was always "built-in" since I had trained that way, but recently I wonder if I've gotten away from that technique. Your video has inspired me to consider connecting with a teacher to have her re-evaluate if I'm still playing the way I should be. I have stretches I do 2-3x/day that I got from my therapist, and if I don't do them I definitely feel it the next day. Thanks for sharing your story!
My therapist thinks part of it is from being home more, and we have laptops. Your posture and positioning are a bit different than a regular keyboard. She found I have a lot of tension in my arm, shoulder and back... that whole muscle chain can affect it. I have to be careful with certain movements, like twisting open a jar, or even flipping a burger with a spatula!
Hi Sam. Thanks for much for sharing your story. So much of it resonates with my own story. I also took lessons in the Taubman approach for approx 18 months which shifted things initially, however ultimately I didn’t like how aspects of the approach felt in my body so I decided not to pursue it to the extent the approach requires. Since then I’ve studied Body Mapping and Alexander Technique which has had the most impact in helping me play well. I gather you are aware of these. I’m curious to know how you are going now. Do you mind sharing? Also, are you aware of the work of Nancy Reese, Sheila Paige and Kay Hooper? If not, do check them out. Cheers Andrew
Dear Sam, thanks for speaking about this. This really gives me hope. I've been terribly struggling with RSI for the past 6 month at the moment. Arms, elbows and wrists are constantly hurting, which prevents me from playing and working (I work on the PC). Do you also give lessons on the Taubman Approach? I would love to try this out and get back to playing pain-free again.
So sorry you are going through that! you think the pain is FROM playing? Unfortunately I don't teach the Taubman method, as there are all kinds of certifications needed. But you should be able to find a teacher by googling, even if it has to be remote (not sure where you live)
@@SamGutman Well, I can't say for sure if the pain comes directly from playing the piano, the guitar or typing. It's probably a combination of all. Do you think that the Taubman Approach wouldn't help if the problem actually comes from typing? My rheumatologist says, he thinks it is a muscular problem and I'm going to the neurologist next week to discard some nerve issues. Anyways, I don't really care about the certifications, to be very honest. If you have the knowledge and experience with it and you think see you could teach it, that's enough for me. Here where I live the teachers are prohibitively expensive.
Being a musician, I am very careful working as a mechanic ... repetitive motions are better performed by a power tool. As I say, "there's a tool for every job; if you don't have the tool, you are the tool" - meaning the body is the tool! It's sobering to see elder people worn out from what they've done over the years. I haven't tried playing the guitar with power tools and I don't plan to, leaving good technique the only viable option. I appreciate you sharing your tale with these struggles

Thank you.... just thank you. It's hard, but there's hope!
Admirable for you to speak on this. I too have this problem. I am in your same position. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your honesty, opening your heart and helping others with advice.
Thanks a lot for sharing !!! 🙏 I am not alone !!
of course! yeah I think things like this are more common than it may seem

hope your tendonitis isn't too bad. If it hasn't been a problem until recently I wonder what changed?

Great video! I love the image of you in the gym with the 2 pound weights!
Thank you for this video! I am dealing with tendonitis for 3 month now and im sick of it. Thanks!
haha well certainly if I felt that way it would suck. I do love this music though luckily
