Arturia Pigments with Ms Lauryn Hill & The Fugees
This past weekend I played in Memphis, Tennessee with Ms. Lauryn Hill & The Fugees, and I played the whole set using Arturia Pigments. I mostly made my own sounds from scratch, which was a really fun sound design challenge, and a great way to acquaint myself with the program.

As keyboardists we generally go through life playing subtle sounds. Usually it’s guitar players who get to make giant distorted screaming sounds. As someone who grew up playing rock with loud guitars my whole life, there’s probably some jealous part of me that always wanted to be the one making huge sounds. You're playing at Coachella and can't afford the Arturia V-Collection? It's crazy to buy each synth individually. It should be included in the synth imho, otherwise it's a preset keyboard. I got the V-Collection for $199 in a sale but I spend about upgrading to the new additions to be honest. I do love Arturia though.

    I play in cover bands, we have gigs with 50 or 100 people. We have fun but of course we are not professionals... It is exciting to see what a real pro uses for big venues and tours! Yes, I use Pigments as my swiss knife for a lot of sounds. It can be soft analog for seventies prog rock, or terribly harsh for nineties electro dance. Really flexible and performing. But I don't like Astrolab because it assumes you use only Arturia plugins. They are nice but I prefer to keep a computer on stage and have the freedom to use whatever I want. I rule my live setup with GigPerformer, and it's rock solid.

  • @SamGutman
    @SamGutman 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

    A FEW THINGS I GOT WRONG / HAVE SINCE LEARNED 1- The Astrolab DOES come with Analog Lab Pro. I may have made it sound like you have to pay for ALL the software. 2- You CAN edit the most important parameters of a patch (like ADSR on an analog synth) in Analog Lab WITHOUT buying the VST. 3- You CAN add presets to playlists and organize your sound banks ON the Astrolab, without the computer. I simply missed this. 4- The individual instruments ARE $150 each BUT the whole V-Collection with 30+ instruments is $599. 5- You CAN achieve more onboard control by connecting an external MIDI controller, and then you have access to 9 additional parameters. I have become a much bigger fan of this keyboard since the time of making this video. The number 1 thing that changed my mind was falling in love with the software. My main contention in the video was that you needed the software to really unlock the keyboard. This is still true, however, the software is really really great and so I think it’s worth it. I love making a patch in Pigments, loading it right into the keyboard, and then playing a show without my computer. It WOULD be nice if there was more onboard control (without plugging in an external controller), BUT as long as I set up my Macros how I want them, it doesn't bother me.

    Hi Sam. Thanks for much for sharing your story. So much of it resonates with my own story. I also took lessons in the Taubman approach for approx 18 months which shifted things initially, however ultimately I didn’t like how aspects of the approach felt in my body so I decided not to pursue it to the extent the approach requires. Since then I’ve studied Body Mapping and Alexander Technique which has had the most impact in helping me play well. I gather you are aware of these. I’m curious to know how you are going now. Do you mind sharing? Also, are you aware of the work of Nancy Reese, Sheila Paige and Kay Hooper? If not, do check them out. Cheers Andrew

    • @bodhibeats8257
      @bodhibeats8257 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Could have this wrong, but my understanding of AstroLab is that you generally need to VSTs to *design* sounds, but once you’ve designed them you can transfer and*play* them directly on the keyboard. I think that’s the idea, but don’t quote me. 😁

    • @djkanyon
      @djkanyon 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bodhibeats8257 i think so too, but if i'm buying Astrolab will it have them Pigments sounds or something like that on board? i mean presets. • @SamGutman
      @SamGutman 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So the way it works is that the Astrolab comes with all the Pigments presets...but you can't really edit them or create your own presets ON the keyboard. For that you have to have the software. But once you have the software you can tweak things, create them from scratch, etc, and then load them right into the keyboard.

    • @bodhibeats8257
      @bodhibeats8257 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@djkanyon You can certainly make the argument that most any digital synth is “just” a glorified MIDI keyboard and VST. I certainly think that’s what my Hydrasynth is. But…what’s wrong with that? Any advice given your experience with both? MODX6+ seems more flexible with more control surfaces and both sample and fm synth engines onboard, but that also makes it potentially more difficult to use. On the other hand, since AstroLab is more software-based, will that equate to a longer life before it becomes outdated?

    Right I get that, but the edit functionality unless you pay for a fully licensed $600 package is not included. As you shared your are tweaking presets not creating anything new or substantially editing them. You can’t swap a saw oscillator for a square in the presets or add an effect that not present on the preset without the full package. Glad you did the video. My guess is you’ll never get one of these from a back line vendor if it’s on your rider.
