I was there in 1977. I just graduated from high school at 17. I lived about an hour from Oakland. Saw many Day on the Greens back in the 70s at the coliseum with about 3 bands performing in one day. Can't believe most of those kids in the video are grandparents and great-grandparents. I will never forget this concert as long as I live. Those were good times for sure.

At what point did this band become a right wing, confederate flag waving entity? You were there in '77. I noticed the crowd is NOT carpeted with Confederate flags as is the case today.

I can't believe I was 23 years old then and now I am a 69-year-old senior citizen enjoying mom and daughter's reaction video to one of the greatest classic rock performances ever! it's been 46 years when this concert featuring headliner 'Peter Frampton" with opening band Lynyrd Skynyrd rocking "Free Bird" out of the park. Just imagine all those women are now grandmothers. Awesome!

My friend, this concert L S was opening to the Stones and not for that fake rocket Frampton and the whole stage is proving my comment about it. He did send all three guitarists to the tongue of the Stones which is their signature. And this video was cut short of that. The leader of SL wasn’t afraid from anybody! Not even Keith said a word about it, who we know is a badass to.
@@bubamaranovichok4901 Wrong. Peter Frampton was the headliner at this concert. The one in 1976 in Knebworth, England is where LS blew the Stone's doors off. I much prefer to watch that performance as the camera spent more time on the guitar army while they were on Mick's Tongue catwalk that they were forbiddened to use.

This was 4th of July weekend. They played on the 2nd (this one) and again on the 4th. You are correct… the plane crash was just 3 months later.
There were actually 3 lead guitarists, something Lynyrd Skynyrd was unique for!!
Most of us in the South were very PROUD the day they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame!!!
Pres. Jimmy Carter once said that Lynyrd Skynyrd was his favorite group.
Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special" etc.
Considering the plane crash in 77, the original skynyrd never existed beyond. Yes, eventually the surviving members reunited with various front men. Great band, great music.

Seeing and feeling the vibe from this video feels like stepping into a time warp. I was 17 when this concert took place. The plane crash was in October of 1977. Very tragic. The band originated right here in Jacksonville, Florida back in the 1960s.

In the South after the plane crash, any bar or club you went into that had a Live Band, before the night was through there would always be someone who stood up and yelled at the band, " Play Free Bird ! "

I was stationed on the east coast in 77. I remember a bunch of us was going to drive down to Greensville, SC to catch the concert but we did not make it. Then hearing about the plane crash,... I was heartbroken. They changed their style up a little when they released "Freebird", exploring their range. I have always had trouble with this song with the line "I am as free as a bird now". I still tear up listening to that. Funny, 46 years later and I still die inside hearing it. Thank you for a great reaction! 😀
I was only 10 when the plane crash happened. I remember hearing about a concert they did shortly after the crash happened.. When they did "Freebird", they had Ronnie's hat on a microphone stand and they played his voice over the speakers while the band just played. I bet that was awesome.
@@j.woodbury412 , It was in 1979. The survivors of the crash got together at the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam and did an instrumental of Free Bird with Charlie D. onstage with them. To my knowledge it was the first time after the October, 1977 crash the survivors were even able to play together because it took some of them that long to heal from their crash injuries. Particularly guitarist Gary Rossington who had all kinds of bones broken plus a punctured stomach and a punctured liver. When they reformed with Johnny as their frontman in 1987, they kicked off the Tribute Tour at the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam in Nashville also.

That was a slide for his guitar. This band is one of the best thats ever been. If you noticed the guy in white was the primary solo then add the guy in the red cords to play the same thing to layer the solo
75 grad here, I was 20, but over in Texas. Even tho that makes me 66 soon, I’m glad I grew up with the amazing music of the 60s and 70s. It was a very special time, indeed.
Quite right young lady. Gary Rossington plays the slide guitar. Note what looks like a Tootsie Roll stem inserted between the strings near the bottom of the fret board. This kept the open strings from ringing.. Mom, I was at this show. Class of "77. You look fantastic. Whatever you're doing, keep on doing it!! I really enjoy watching both of you react to video's. Slide is a glass or metal spool used originally a broken bottle black Bluesmen would use to slide across strings ! Usually tuned strings straight across for sliding between chords!
That thing on his finger is called a slide. Other groups that used it are Yes and Pink Floyd. This was the last concert I saw before their plane went down.
I saw them in Philadelphia in 1977 at JFK Stadium. I was 16 and my girlfriend was 14. We got there early and were about 30 feet from the stage. The lineup that day was the J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton (who had the biggest record in the world at that time). It was an incredible experience I will never forget. Thanks for the memory.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were the definitive southern rock band of the 70's. "Free Bird" is their signature song and a popular favorite on classic rock radio stations. One of the great opening lines, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?". I'm glad you chose this live performance video. You really get the full affect of the extremely talented musicians they were.
Taking nothing from Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers Band invented the genre and was a level above even LS.
Hello from northeast Ohio. I grew up listening to them, and I was nearly four years old when this concert was filmed. This is an iconic performance, and I always come back to it. But sadly, three and a half months after this concert, tragedy would strike them. Thanks for doing this reaction.
If you like the slide guitar sound, give a listen to the Allman Brothers Band live at the Fillmore East 1971. Whipping Post is the starting place.

A slide like he has on is very common in Country, Blues & Southern Rock in particular.
If you had fun watching this video, it's NOTHING compared to being there listening to them live. The sights, sounds, smells, atmosphere and all. A real sense of community unheard of by today's standards.

The finger thing is a glass or plastic cylinder and. Is used to slide between notes on the guitar, the guitar solo is just Insane

He is wearing what is known as a slide. It can be made from different things, but it allows you to slide the pitch without only playing on the frets

Still one of my favorite bands ever. Still bummed to this day that the band split when I was about 8 years old so I never got a chance to see a concert of theirs. It's super eery how a few years earlier Ronnie told his dad he wouldn't live past 30. He was about three months shy of that when the plane crashed. That is just super trippy. These guys are timeless no matter what genre of music you like. Greatest guitar solo of all time. Stairway is close but can't do it.

I was there for sure...grew up in the Oakland Hills. Went to Skyline High when Tom Hanks was there. He graduated in 1974 and I graduated in 1975. Went to every friggin "Day on the Green" at the Oakland Coliseum from (missed the first year 1973) 1974 to 1981 when I moved to San Diego for graduate school. There were always 4-5 great acts....I mean where could you go and see The Beach Boys and The Grateful Dead all at the same concert....Rocking in the 70s and 80s was pretty much the best scene ever for any music genre you can imagine.....
Just got to love that era, the music is awesome, and the audience is just stunning beuatifull. Guys and girls are all naturall, no ugly estetics or tatooes.

Yeah. The singer, the ginger guitar with the red pants, and his sister, one of the backup singers. All taken in one stroke. That was a shocking sad day for so many of our generation.

This performance was one year before I was even born and I only heard this song because of the game Guitar Hero. Even so, this is an amazing song.
I believe they came back at this show with an encore of Sweet Home Alabama.
As mentioned previously the plane crash took the life of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines (in this video he's the guitar player on the left in a white shirt and red pants) Steve's sister, background singer Cassie Gaines, also lost her life in the crash. In the Sweet Home Alabama video the female singers are more prominately featured. Cassie is the long haired girl in the middle of the three, wearing a dark tank top.
They played Sweet Home Alabama before Freebird.

My senior HS class voted this song in as our graduating class song, but the faculty vetoed it. I don’t remember what lame song they said would be our class song because none of us cared. For us, THIS was our class song.
Same here! First, we picked ZZ Topp "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" but the senior officers said no. So, then we picked "Freebird". They said no to that, so they picked on their own. They picked "Long and Winding Road". Class of 79'!!!!

2 guitarists & the piano player survived the plane crash & were in a band. I really only know one song. It's "Don't Misunderstand Me" from Rossington Collins. I love that song.

I've been playing for 40 years. You're exactly right about what he has on his finger. it's simply called a slide, obviously for the way he is using it. It is almost the same sound but definitely the same concept as the steel guitar
Man, those were the days. Everytime I hear this it's as if I'm transported back in time. RIP Ronnie. Mid-night at the Oasis is another one that makes one time travel to a more peaceful, innocent era. Yes, the slide on finger is used by lap slide guitarists, and pedal steel guitarists. It's also called a bottle neck guitar because some slides were made from glass bottle necks. (Whisky, soda/pop bottles, etc) Other slides are made of steel. It's a personal prefrence

It is so sad that all of them have passed away now. Gary Rossington that is playing the slide on the guitar has passed away this year and ending all the original players.
I love this version of Freebird and what I also love is the crowd reaction just before the triple solo comes in because they know what's coming.
I WAS AT THIS CONCERT ! IT WAS AMAZING ! IT WAS SOMETHING THEY USED TO CALL A "DAY ON THE GREEN" ! THERE WAS 5 BANDS ! LYNYRD SKYNYRD CO-HEADLINED WITH PETER FRAMPTON ! SADLY THIS WAS JUST 2 MONTHS BEFORE WE LOST PART OF THE BAND IN A TRAGIC PLANE CRASH !
And this was only a little over 3 months before the fatal plane crash on Oct 20, 1977

Nice Reaction! Yes, the plane crash was tragic. The red pants guitar player was Stevie Gaines and his sister (Cassie) was one of three back up singers in the band. She told Ronnie (the singer) about her brother when they needed a guitar player and he was so good they hired him. The crash was in October 1977 and all three, Cassie, Stevie and Ronnie died.

The song Free Bird was witten by Allen Collins and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. It was inspired when Allen had a fight with hia GF Kathy. She asked him if he would remember her if she left.
I was 12 then. LS is my all time favorite band and you MUST react to my favorite song of theirs...Call Me The Breeze.
