    Twitch should fund a TV show where Linus fixes up peoples server builds, like Kitchen Nightmares but for networking setups.

      Also their employees behind the camera (For example Pepper) are all oldschool TV-guys that already worked with them when they hosted GIGA Games on CNBC Europe back in 2001.

    This server is not appropriate for Minecraft Server. Minecraft is not multi threaded. Having a bunch of low frequency cores is the same as having an Atom cpu for it :/ I used to host big minecraft servers. You need at least 3.5-4 GHz CPUs if you do not want it to lag.

    • @maximilianstumpf8236

      I've never extensively used anything else other than ESXi and clusters are a great thing there. We've had an issue where the server which had all VMs started getting purple screens of death and our whole infrastructure was there. Luckily all of the crucial VMs were automatically migrated to the second sever in the cluster. In the end the issue was the firmware on the 10Gb NIC.

      lets not forget there is ecc functionality, and the drives are likely in a raid to enable a parody drive, the psu is redundant, ther drives are separated by a bored that likely has a some power safety, and lastly the mobo can be replaced along with the cpu. and lets not forget the tape drive installation to come

      Twitch is a multi billion dollar a year company. Good streamers can support themselves and even their families on a one person crew. With that kind of infrastructure to support "the talent" as it were, it means they can have more stream time and less setup and process time which means more money coming in.

      On twitch there are several ways to make money first one is through ADs the second is through in video donations and the last is through monthly subscriptions, I watch Angry Joe stream allot and people often donate $1 to $5 just to put some kind of message on the screen but i have seen people donate over $100 and then there is the monthly subscription, In Angry Joe's case that is $5 a small amount but when you think he has thousands of subscribers i forget the actual number but lets just say its 1000 that's 1000 x $5 so $5000 per month add that to AD revenue and also add in the donations and even if Twitch take a cut that's still allot of money.

      You must be new here, like 90% of these server videos could be solved by using appropriate enterprise grade software like Linux, BSD, etc. The problem is then it would just work and it would be one short video with no mishaps. Would kill the channel in a few weeks tops.

    • @MaXwellFalstein
      @MaXwellFalstein 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are completely correct. BSD based solutions would be far superior with containerisation, but that would be too professional for LMG.

      The only thing is that if you are going to run it with a Minecraft server, it's much better to just do it on a windows machine. Yes, I know you can get a MC server to work on a lunix box but its a kinda janky solution compared to just getting a windows machine to run it on.

    For my increasing digital footprint, I run an IBM x3650 M3. You can get these rather cheaply these days and run 6 core processors with hyperthreading at 3 GHz speeds. They also take up to 192GB of DDR3 ECC RAM, and have slots for 16 2.5" disks. For between $500-600 you can almost max out these servers and do quite a bit for all but the most taxing computer tasks. They even take graphics cards with a bit of modification or other effort. I will probably never own something as advanced as this Storinator solution, but having a dedicated server on your network is such a nice convenience.

      It's called sandboxing. We do this at my work all the time. This way, the activity of one resource intensive program doesn't effect the activity of any of the others. Also, if something causes the VM one program is running on to crash, you get a few benefits. It's easier to diagnose the cause of the crash, because you don't have to deal with the whole array of applications running on the physical server as the rest of the server is uneffected, if a rollback is necessary you only need to rollback that VM, and lots of other fun added side-effects that just make management of the systems that much easier as well as system security benefits due to the attack surface being less exposed.

    • @iCatCloud
      @iCatCloud 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well, if you watch the video you would know by now :)
      Twitch wont keep old videos on there archive forever, so they save them elsewhere so they have a backup for later use, like uploading on site so other can watch them. Also nostalgia. Sure they could just upload on TH-cam but what if something happens to TH-cam? then the videos are gone.

    • @TheAyanamiRei

    • @CorpusOrganic
      @CorpusOrganic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      liability coverage(if someone said you were coming onto 13yr old girls on stream it is nice to have footage to prove otherwise.). Re-use(the can use this video in any way, edit the shit out of it, even do montages with it with little to know problem). the original footage having a lot higher integrity then the encoded version that gets broadcast(again, if I wanted to edit something(which i never do and don't even know how) having the original footage would be a lot more easier to work with then footage that has been downloaded and re-uploaded a million different times and went through more transcoding/encoding then can be counted by a human mind).
      More likely it is something a lot simpler that I haven't though of. Like having something to show their kids some day. To prove they don't just sit around on their asses all day playing video games.

      Nostalgia? Idk about you but I very rarely watch year old videos of my favourite TH-camrs, so why would I watch a year old twitch VOD? To add to that, the view count percentage on VODs are incredibly low and even if the view count wasn't pretty much non-existent VODs aren't even monetized, so what's the point? If they wanted nostalgia so bad they could have easily made highlights and upload them to TH-cam (which by the way, is not going anywhere any time soon, it's crazy to even think so). Plus, it's monetized, so it actually benefits them. A 5-10 min highlight is a hell of a lot better than a 5-9 hour year old out dated VOD. Nothing that I can possibly think of actually justifies having a $20,000 server for twitch.

    • @CorpusOrganic
      @CorpusOrganic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      monetizing videos isn't the only source of income for even those that strictly broadcast their videos through youtube. Lots of youtubers I follow tend to branch out into multiple income streams. The ones that go whole hog with it will monetize, pop in their own ads in the videos, and use donations and patreons.
      What they likely don't need is viewers, what they need are followers. people that like their content enough to support them. I tend to follow only channels that create new content that is relevant to me. The rest I purge on a regular basis. I watch old content at times to. Such as the direworlf20 SP series episodes. It is fun to go back and re-watch the starts of his seasons.
      I'm not one to throw money arround. Since I don't have it,and likely wouldn't if I did. So I dont really support channels all that much. Especcially as I never click a ad. as they are way to likely to be malevolent considering the ones that serve them don't care to filter them properly.

And I have 20TB's of HDD archive space that is almost full, as well as a half dozen or so 50 disc spindles, filled with DVDs and DL-DVDs that I previously used for archiving sessions (I can NEVER find anything I need without going through an hour of going searching before locating it).

You "freeze" the system at a certain point and no matter what changes, programs installed, viruses downloaded, etc. it will load fresh at the freeze point on the next reboot. All you really have to do is occasionally unfreeze the system to perform system updates.

I like watching their informal videos about Minecraft, but I wouldn't really care to watch their streams or other long gaming sessions. I'd rather play Minecraft myself for all that time. But there is a lot to learn from watching a pro play. You can learn how not to build square houses out of dirt, how to fight other players effectively in PvP, and simply how to get motivated to play more Minecraft when you get bored of the game again.

    How about the GameGrumps? They always record video footage and audio to a portable hard drive and that's not that safe for the video storage, if someone knocked it over the hard drive dies and the data gets corrupted it could be useful for a server to capture on to and send that captured footage to their editor without worrying about a broken drive.

      Yeah, they're quite a reasonably popular group of TH-camrs turned Twitch streamers who play a variety of games (Mainly Minecraft).

    • @CataChaos
      @CataChaos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They all started as Streamers. (I think Pause is the only one who started as a TH-camr)

      Mind linking me their individual youtube channels or twitch?
      Because the n3rdfusion channel and twitch both have miniscule followings.

    A surveying/engineering firm could benefit from a system like this. They keep all of their old cad as well as field data. Currently available are systems that utilize a cloud service to have live data from the field available for download, but a system where data could live save to the server and then using collaboration tools from Cad, one could share data with others in office faster and with field faster.
    Manufacturing firms or CNC shops also could use it as delivery of machine file and time stamp filing with this and a small Linux system.

    Louis Rossmann could use one. He has a 3.5mbps up internet connection and is trying to stream. With a better server he might be able to stream using a higher preset, which significantly improves the quality.

      ***** Poland was mostly shaped by communism and stupid govs... and still sadly is. That is why even though economical growth seems to be stable and good, Poland has shit industry and poorly managed economy and tax system that allows for exploitation by bigger corporations that basically don't pay taxes. Tax free money a year is around 700$, where in UK it is 8-10 times higher, that means only the poorest and middle class pays taxes in Poland.
      You can make something good but still you may not succeed in getting people attention(chance is very small). Although somebody else may have same idea and earn a lot of money.
      My orginal point is. We pay too much for everything and we are taxed like crazy. I'm not crying, i'm just stating things that people having money ignore. I think that is a problem that a lot of people cannot aquire goods they need to survive, even if they are determined to work themselves to death. I think that is unfair that a lot of the time people that have less have harsher conditions and means than anyone else.
      We all fight, we all want to live and i try to contribute even with so little i have.
      Going back. I would not reply to you, if you didnt attack me personally and didnt say "get to work". It is never so easy.
      Btw. fastest way to make money is to become a preacher and create your own organisation(tax free, gets money from gov) but i think i'm not as fake as them.

      Wait, communism usually results in heavy taxing on everyone especially private buisness if any at all, but then you say industry pays no tax. How the hell did Poland go from China to US in economics?

    Team Four Star is a media creation group that's down in Texas and I have no idea what their server needs might be but to my knowledge everything they do is streamed through twitch and then their archive is just a reupload of the twitch stream onto TH-cam.

    I see alot of people suggesting that "unraid" isn't a good idea in that the performance, in most cases, is about the same or worse than transfer from individual disks as compared to raid/zfs and that the constant spinning down/up of disks increases the likelihood of disk failure compared to a traditional storage array. Since you are the only people I know of using a decent sized unraid installation I was curious what your experience been with disk failure, write performance etc using unraid? I've been kicking around giving it a try for a while but I am coming from substantial experience with traditional storage tech and I'm a bit antsy about it.
