My 2011 kia Sorento doesn't change ignition modes like the key isn't in the vehicle and it doesn't crank. The fob doesn't unlock or lock the doors, i have changed both battries in the fob and once in a while i can get it to start, what are your thoughts?
Hi there, is it exactly the same when you use any of key fobs? Have you tried to put the key fob inside the fob holder (if you drive Sorento XM which is equipped with fob holder) when you face this issue? If so, what was the result?
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis yes same symptoms with both keys and it does have the fob holder and still has the same exact symptoms when the fob is in the holder
@@bradleythomas6326 Yes, SMK module could be the cause, but before paying too much for the module, it could be great if you can find someone to scan your car with a scan tool to read any possible codes which can be a great help. Also please let me know if there is any warning message on instrument cluster when you face the issue. And the last but not least, what is the model year of your car? there might be another unit, in addition to SMK module, which is called PDM, that could be the cause as well but I need to know your car's model year to make sure if there is any PDM on your car.

@@AutomotiveDiagnosis Sure, when i get in, no issues until i push the button, if i push normal it says no key detected says that until i push the button with the keyfob itself
On Kia smart key system, there used to be an external receiver which is normally the cause of the kinds of issues. But apparently as I see in the wiring diagram, on your car it’s integrated with smart key control module. I don’t think all LF antennas go faulty at the same time, it could be wiring or unit failure. But of course using a scan till you can check the antennas one by one. The cheapest scanner that I think will cover this function is OTOFix D1. I haven’t tried that scanner on the smart key system yet, but it surprisingly works well. You can ask from the provider another coverage as well. And it’s normally around $400.
I only have access to a snap-on verus scanner. I'm trying to access the immobilizer function on my scam tool but it won't communicate with my scan tool. I can't find any service information about this smart key system and this 2013 santa ge has been kicking my butt for 3 days now. No crank no start and security light on the dash when trying to start
Hi there, As I see in your comment, you have a Santa Fe 2013 with smart key (push button) and you can't crank or start the engine. So, following ideas come to my mind: - When you using the scan tool to check the smart key system you will see different options, there is one immobilizer option which is irrelevant (this item is for those cars with mechanical key, not push button), so you will get no communication if you try this item, you should use "smart key system". - Normally if there is any problem in smart key system to detect the fob key, you won't be able to turn the ignition switch on, and you will have "Fob key is not detected" or "check steering wheel lock" message on instrument cluster. So, if you are able to change the ignition switch position to ACC or ON, most likely you need to check some other components first (including starter relay, or starting system itself). Please let us know how it goes.
Also, you can try the following method in case you have a faulty brake switch: th-cam.com/video/DZ5zW4dXtVc/w-d-xo.html if this method works, you may have fault on brake switch or it's circuit.
Dear Sir, our 2010 Sorento (XM) has a problem that we can only unlock the car with the buttons on the key fob and we need to insert the key fob in the holder in order to start the car. Neither door handles or the boot can be opened by pressing the button and the car cannot be started with the key inside the car (if not in the holder in the armrest). This leads me to believe that we may need to replace the smart key control unit, as it seems rather strange that all 6 antennae have stopped working at the same time. My question is, guessing that we will need to re-learn our key fobs to the new smart key control unit, is the PIN code required assigned to the specific smart key control unit or is it assigned to the whole car, i.e. will we need to find the PIN for the car from which the replacement smart key control module was taken or we will need to use the original PIN code for our own car? Thank you very much!
Hi there, My suggestion is to replace the Fob Key battery before doing anything else. Although you can unlock the doors with fob key but based on the fact that LF antennas are not working and you can start the engine after inserting the fob into holder shows this that you may need to replace the Fob key battery. If you did this already, try the procedure with your spare key. Regarding the new fob key (if needed), you must the 6 digit PIN code that get using the VIN number (normally from dealership) if you already have one, that might work but these PIN codes are rolling codes that change periodically, so if your first attempt shows a wrong code, don’t try again before having a new code. Please let us know how it goes.
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis Thank you for the prompt answer! Unfortunately, I have tried several times with both key fobs with brand new batteries but without any luck. Next step seems to be replacing the smart key control module. Will report back once this is done!
