Great video, as always! It felt like you were speaking directly to me while I was watching! 😆 As a marathoner running in Pro 3 for more than 5-6 races, your analysis of these two shoes provided me with valuable insights. A big takeaway for me: I might need a significant adjustment when transitioning to Pro 4
My Adios Pro 3 experience: 3 different laces, tons of socks Ended with a lock lace system and thicker socks... and its still an "okay" fit. There are too many shoes out there to invest again into Adidas in the coming year. But I will still watch every Adidas video of you, also to keep up with the market.
Great video. Love the AP3 and have in one pair over 600k and a second new pair, wearing the EVO SL as I type this (very nice and easy shoe for daily training or just casual wear) and I am SUPER exited for the AP4 once it launches in Europe in early Jan.
This is vs video I’ve been waiting for! AP3 is my first racing shoe and it works for mid pack runner like me. I am yet to find consensus in reviews on whether AP4 would work for slower runners with not quite ideal form.
@@SagasuRunning How would the newer shoe be for a smaller foot runner? I have had had pinky toe issues in the past in road racing shoes mainly flats and one pair of spikes the Nike Miler Cross Country, due to the upper fit where the Nike Cross Country Miler I still have needed to be broken in to race well.
if the AP4's durability is going to match with AP3's durability this might be the best shoe in the market. Looking forward for a Sagasu update regarding the durability! keep up the good work.
I don’t think the durability will be the same. I fully expect the AP4 to last for hundreds of kms…. But I think it will be more 150-200kms of good racing and another 200k+ of training. Similar to ZoomX. I’m going to try to push the AP4s over 320k and come back with a durability update. Likely in the spring sometime…
i have used the vaporfly 2, pro 3, and alhpafly 2, and I think that Adidas has achieved success finally in the war of super shoes , I run from 5km to half marathon in the pro 3 and feels super comfortable and fast, also are much more durable than the vaproflys, the alphas are technically better but for 2/3 of the price the pro 3 does the job really well, said so I am going to try the pro 4 before any other super shoe of the new gen. great video
Nice comparison video, I am glad I held off from getting the AP3 just as the AP4 got announced. I got a feeling that this design language will trickle in to the other popular Adizero shoes such as the Takumi Sens and Bostons.
We have seen all the leaks now of the TS11 and B13...the TS11 is nearly identical tot he Adios 9 and the B13 is similar to the B12 with some design language tweaks.
This is a really useful side-by-side. Particularly that shot of the soles together was great for visualizing the difference in the rocker points. The rocker point has always felt a little weird in the AP3 - like suddenly tipping over - so the redesigned geometry makes sense to me. The lighter lightsrike pro also seems like a big improvement. I suspect a process improvement with the supercritical foaming of the TPEE from whoever makes it - BASF? Overall it needed to be lighter to be competitive with ZoomX and by definition that means a bit more gas voids and a bit less plastic per unit volume of foam which means it has to be softer and less dense. It sounds like the resiliency in the material is more than enough to work with this airier process. I have personally speculated that the plasticky uppers and some tendency to tear in the last few years were partially an artifact of adidas recycled materials goals. Several flagship models were marketed as 50%+ recycled plastics. It was a big marketing point of the AP3 and the Boston 10/11/12, adios 7/8, TS 9/10/11. And in fact the adidas shoe is labeled as 20% recycled in the adidas app. I wonder if it is (for now) too difficult to make a really the highest tolerance premium textile upper with majority recycled plastics which must have more variability than virgin polyester. A bit of retrenchment on recycling is a bit sad but probably appropriate if necessary for the quality of the flagship product.
Agree on the AP3 geometry. It had a “tripping” feel to me beyond Threshold. Almost like falling off of a curb or stair. I don’t think BASF is involved with Adidas foams anymore. As far as I understand they are working with Chinese vendors now… ai believe since the Evo 1 program started. Fully agree that the Celarmesh uppers were from Adidas’s recycling programs. I’m glad to see them moving away from them on their performance shoes.
Next video request: Adios Pro 4 vs Alphafly 3. 😊. My unpopular opinion about the celermesh upper of the Pro 3 is that it fits well with the old LSP foam and the rods. I could be wrong but I think that rigid upper of AP3 was needed to bend the rods and the foam to create the propulsion. The new, more comfortable upper of the AP4 now fits its midsole as the new LSP is way softer. Great video as always. 😊
You know, I actually agree with you. I do think given the firmness of LSP Classic, the upper needed to also be more rigid to work with the foot to engage the foam. There is something to that.
First run in my Pro 4s today. It is a very nice shoe but honestly, I think I might keep running in my 3s for a while as I have six or seven pairs. There are a lot of improvements and changes in the 4 but I can’t say that I prefer it, just that it’s different. I always had a good fit in the 3s although the tongue was terrible, and the foam just did me well. Interesting fact, each shoe weighed exactly 200 g on the nose for my size 9.
Yup, very different and (as I said multiple times in the video) it will take some getting used too...especially for those who spent so much time in the AP3. Good you are giving it a chance though. It is a big performance leap forward.
Can't wait to get some AP4's. The AP3 is a great shoe and I have run marathons and half's in it and love it but it really needed a better upper and lacing. I loved the original LS Pro and a change to something a bit softer might have some worried but if its bouncier plus lighter then that can only be a good thing. I'll use the AP3's as my workout shoe as they are so durable and save AP4 purely for racing. Love the detailed content, keep it up.
Excellent comparison. preferred the pro 2 over the 3. no complaints for the 3 as long as i wore smartwool running socks. never noticed the cutouts like some people say, i mostly heel strike and over pronate but the pro shoes still worked out for me. i miss the upper from the hated adizero pro. it was awesome.
Oh man..the Adizero Pro...ugh, that shoe was SO awful. That upper though wasn't bad and was the upper on the AP1. Then Adidas started down their recycled material Adizero thing in the AP2. Glad to see them finally moving away from that now.
Great review! I could get the Pro 4 now, but it is only available in that red/silver colorway. I'm going to wait until January when the white/black colorway is available. Can't wait to try this shoe.
I'm curious if the 60% offset, compared to the 70%, is noticeable. As a mid-to-forefoot striker, I'm fascinated by the concept. I can't think of a shoe that I've been more excited about its release. Great discussion, as always.
Extremely noticeable. The biggest barrier for eh AP3 for me was that late rocker. I could never make it work, beyond steady into Threshold paces. Any faster and not felt like I was tripping. Adidas did make a big deal of it in the Evo 1. But they basically geometry has always been in the Vaporfly…. And I’m fairly sure the Boston 12 had it too. Both shoes felt very versatile and agile.
Softer and more aggressive will make it NOT something I'm looking from race day shoe.... But I see how adidas wanted to make it to appeal to broader running market. Would be nice if they make adidas race options more than 1 (not really counting evo as option for consumer runners) - keep soft aggressive pro 4 but also keep firmer, less aggressive more hill strike and slower approachable for others 😊
Awesome review and comparison with its predecessor. Looks like it improved the durability of the outsole, stronger rebound, fixed the upper issues, made it lighter. You made me buy one immediately. I would like to request comparing it with Alphafly3 as well, since you mentioned the ride is similar. Thanks!!!!!
I loved my Pro 3's. Yes, I wasn't a fan of the upper, but that said, I never had any issues with it while running. Never had any issues with the heel area either, thankfully, and man, that Lightstrike Pro foam is just amazing! I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on a pair of Pro 4's 👌🏻 I'll be waiting for a black colourway though I think, being in the UK, I'm really not a fan of white running shoes 😂
I'm a "All black everything" type guy... but I prefer white running shoes. We have seen alot of AP4 color way leaks, but no black ones yet, even dark ones. That being said, Adidas will do 1,000,000 color ways of the shoe so at some point they will be around. I'm waiting for the all white "non-dyed" version...
Given that Adios Pro Evo 1 is from a different planet, do you believe the AP4 is still Adidas’ sole competitor against VF and AF? Awesome review, cheers mate!
As a 3:20 marathon runner and 1:30 half marathon runner, I think the ap3 is still going to be best for marathon and now ap4 will be best for the half - for me and my paces
I was fortunate enough not to have issues with the upper in the AP3, even after going down half a size, but I agree it's not good. I am curious about the effect of the rocker placement, as it's also at the 60% mark on the Evo SL. I can't recall it doing anything for me in the AP3 or maybe I've gotten used to it.🤔 As for the softer foam combined with that medial cutout... I guess that pronation moment could be countered with a faster pace or trying to land more on the forefoot. The softer foam would take some getting used to. Fingers crossed Adidas will at least ditch the medial cutout in future Adios Pros and Takumi Sens.
Yup, the Evo 1, Evo SL & AP4 all share the same geometry now... but three VERY different foams. I mean, the fix for pronation is always to work on forefoot landings and strengthening feet, ankles and legs. Regardless of the shoe. The thing with the AP4 is once you get into the forefoot of it, it comes alive.
It's going to hold up, I have no doubt. However, it isn't going to be LSP Classic from the AP3. You'll get 150-200km'sih of "new" performance and then another 200km+ of training. Very ZoomX. I'm going to work on getting this pair of AP4s around 320km and come back and make a durability video. Likely in the spring sometime.
Not even close. Soft is one thing... soft and resilient is another. Hoka foams aren't even in the same conversation with Nike or Adidas (Or Asics or even Saucony or Brooks at this point).
All adidas had to do for this shoe was fix the upper and get rid of that weird cutout at the toe outstep. Soft sinkier foam, forefoot strike geometry and narrower fit are all no go for me.
Likely the same size as you've gone for in the shoes you mentioned. The AP4 has a more race fit feel than either the AP3 or B12... but the length is similar.
@ same predicament you’re in with the wanting a pinky in the front. Currently have a 8.5 and 8 so def will keep updated. I’m glad you found it to ur liking !
Race shoes should be tighter fitting. Especially important with plated shoes to align the plate to the proper place on the foot. Do let me know how you get on with them.
@ i swear by that too! 8 seems to be working about better as a race fit because of the turns (on road& track) 8.5 feels a little floppy but have used them for longer runs instead of intervals. Glad to report there’s 0 lace bite now🙏🏾🙏🏾
AP4 certainly has a re-learning curve. I'll hold off judging until the first 100km but I definitely prefer the AP3 at this early point. Only had the AP4 a month & it'll be my race shoe whereas I've been treating one pair of the AP3 as more of a Tempo shoe in training alongside the Takumi Sen 10..
I never got a straight answer from Adidas. I always assumed it was a way to show off the rods are in the midsole (similar to the cutout on the VF3 or ZF6). The weight savings on the AP3 would only be a few grams, if that, so it can’t be only that.
I think you are right Chris that it is to show off the rods. And not only show them but expose them in a way that incorporates the 3 stripe brand, meaning it is primarily a branding element. They get away with it because the rods are extremely stiff in the midfoot there but I wonder if it’s actually form over function that makes the shoes worse for anyone that tends toward overpronation.
100% for the medial midfoot cutout. Totally 3-stripe branding. The question was on the little lateral forefoot cutout the AP3 had… there always been an oddball.
fun fact, Continental rubber Adidas uses has been a product since the 2000's, around 2008--2009 sometime then when the original Boston models came out.
As a cyclist I was VERY loyal to Conti rubber since the early 2000s and the first Adidas shoe I had with a Conti outsole was the Boston 5 (The "Boston Boost") which was 2014/15. As I remember the original Adidas/Conti shoe was a trail shoe of some sort (which is ironic given Conti is much more of a road tire brand).
@@SagasuRunning the Continental shoe Rubber was made for the original Boston though may have debuted on an Addidas Outdoor Trail model that is better suited for winter/fast hiking because of the shoes upper materials that just came out first with Continental rubber. Both shoes were using more a material closer to the Continental car rubber compound for both shoes.
@@SagasuRunningi agree. Im disappointed with my asics metaspeed sky. Hurts my legs afer my long run. Adios Pro 3's firmness and bounciness feels perfect for me.
the problem I see that the Adios Pro needs to fix is the medial side of the shoe, if everything else is the same, they will have a shoe more then specific elites can use, seeing how the only other elite model Addidas has for racing, well the brand has no model for this, Takumi Sen 10 was the solution for this shoe but the model had a hair less then one year's run and unless Adidas can make a new model like this Adidas is going to lose a bunch of elite unsponsored runners with a midfoot plant to other brands or some lesser elites sponsored by Addias having to wear 8--9 oz models for racing that are not in the race weight category.
probably new Adidas foam is aliphatic tpu same as Puma fast r 2!!! saying this because puma and Adidas working with the same Chinese company called shincell
Nope, Adidas has confirmed it is still supercritical TPEE in the AP4. However, Adidas is experimenting with aliphatic TPU in other shoes. Yes, they are primarily working with Shincell now.

I like firmer foams, the LS Pro in the Pro 3, Asics FFTurbo foams, etc. I'm not really feeling this general trend toward squishier foams.
Its about energy return for the specific material they are using.
I’m in the same boat! I prefer the firmer foam also. I’m gonna have to pick up an extra pair of pro 3’s for later.
Asics FFTurbo+ takes over as the firmest super foam. By a lot now.

Adidas elites will be using the Evo 2 in 2025. The Evos don't have the medial cutout.
The pro 4 already shown age by those crease.
Creasing in the foams has never bothered me. it's a very wabi-sabi type thing. I've always appreciated it.
probably new Adidas foam is aliphatic tpu same as Puma fast r 2!!! saying this because puma and Adidas working with the same Chinese company called shincell
Nope, Adidas has confirmed it is still supercritical TPEE in the AP4. However, Adidas is experimenting with aliphatic TPU in other shoes. Yes, they are primarily working with Shincell now.
It doesn't seem like a good shoe for flat feel 🤷♂
Actually, I'm not sure... but likely. The lack of midfoot structure/stability on the medial side might be an issue.
