Footsteps of doom makes this already horrifying scene into an apocalyptic nightmare..you can feel the fear and tragedy that will come with such an inescapable monstous attack..
This was definitely a huge shock when it dropped, but the more distance I get from it the more I start to realize that Eren never really changed, at his core. He had an extreme goal of "eradicate all titans." Then, they learned that some titans are also human, meaning that it was possible they had human enemies. At that point Eren's perspective kind of shifted to "whoever our enemies are, I'll eradicate them." Then, upon learning the true fate and history of Paradis and discovering that their enemy was, in fact, the whole world, why settle for being the end of their story via the euthanization plan, when he knew how to gain more than enough power to eradicate all his enemies? It's who he has always been. His plan and his goal never really changed, only the steps to get there did.
So basically what happens to a determined shounen protagonists with the wrong goal. Like what if Naruto's goal was not "become a Hokage" but "exterminate all of the Leaf Village enemies"
Because no one thinks their cause is bad, people will default to thinking everyone else is bad. Leading them into acting as if everyone against them are monsters worthy of suffering and death. Introspection is often underutilized.

The closest thing would be the original season 1 episode 1 attack of the titans on the wall. In the show they said that these Titan walking around the border to avoid civilian some house still got mashed and people got killed but everyone convinced it was for the greater good.
There was not any infrastructure outside of wall rose like that, to be honest the writers put that scene where Armin realizes that wall Maria has crumbled as well and there was no need for it, you see the titans walking outwardly as if implying they are consciously choosing to not take the path of least resistance to Marley.
That thinking of the Eldia and especially of that Eren reminds me of the behaviour of a certain people in our world who stolen the land of another people.

I’ve seen this at least 10 times. I had one of my friends who read the manga explain the entire thing to me. But in the end, after knowing all of the information. It just kind of undermines the tension of its own plot, no?

The intense fear and mistrust and the cultural pressures from the two main societies and their characters make it seem, not moral, but understandable why they don't just sit their asses down and talk. Making the protagonist's choice literally the worst one is also a damn unnerving choice and ballsy as hell.
