I know there's the funny "haha Shibuya like P5" joke, but the funny thing is part of why I really liked P5 being set in Shibuya was because of TWEWY being one of my favorite games ever
Meh! Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory also have the Shibuya district in the game. Although it has other areas too like Shinjuku, Nakano Broadway and others. It even has the SEGA building in the game. And Digimon games have nothing to do with Sega whatsoever as far as I know. Anyone who compares a game to Persona 5 because Shibuya don't realize that other games used these locations prior to P5.
Also, I highly recommend giving the DS version a try when you get the chance. It's a bit of a learning curve but once you get accustomed to the dual-screen gameplay, it's by far one of the most mechanically in-depth and satisfying combat systems in any JRPG.
Honestly, that was one of the reasons I was hesitant to check out the rerelease for a long time, I managed to get a copy back in 2012 fresh off the hype from Dream Drop Distance and it’s by far my favorite DS game that I own a physical copy of.
@@notafbiagent473 Pretty sure he does but also given that she has a scene that is literally about "I don't have direction in life and don't really think about the future" it was pretty much a given. If anything I found Beat's entry fee to be the most depressing given how much he adores his sister.
@@davidalicea6705 The sequel wasn’t even conceptualized until the release of Final Remix. Square didn’t think the game was popular enough to warrant one until FR came out which sparked some interest for a sequel. They just went off of that when developing the plot.
When I was 13 my parent gave me TWEWY for Christmas. I almost returned it but they asked me to just try it first. Will never regret it! :) Can't wait to watch this vid!
Wait a minute why did you want to attend the game the game is would have a edgy I like being a teenager is like what we have the main character hating everyone I'm just saying this game is one of the most edgiest games made by square enix in fact the sequel is not that edgy yeah I didn't find that edgy but the original the original is edging
I love that not only are the characters easily identifiable & have great personality, but that the majority of them actually evolve as human beings as the game progresses. Lots of learning and growth from our protagonist & pals, but even having some baddies grow as well? You could tell the writers took the storytelling seriously with this one, and that it wasn't just a gimmick to them. There was a story that needed to be told in their eyes, and honestly they surpassed with flying colors in my eyes.
Okay, just to clear up any misconceptions, or anything like that... The actual, psychological term for 'Meme' is short for 'Mimeme', which refers to an idea, behaviour, or style that spreads through means of imitation. In this case, Once someone has a certain thought planted in their head, they then spread that thought/idea to other people, which then leads those people to do the same, effectively spreading it by imitating the original person.
I'm hoping that Neo still has the meme-inspiring mechanic. Now more than ever, memes are a recognizable part of people's lives. They also very neatly encapsulate one of TWEWY's most important themes: trends, and making/following/breaking them. _COME GET SOME HOT STUFF_
If I recall, it's supposed to be a reference to memetics, as coined by Richard Dawkins, saying that memes are ideas that replicate like a virus, our minds being the host.
Cool fact of the game: Joshua actually appears at the first day of the first week, near Hachiko. In Solo Remix and Final Remix is hard to notice, since the chatting scene pass and Joshua dissapears after it, but in the DS version, you can still see him in the scene (This is because that the chatting scenes are shown on the upper screen, while you can still see the player and the people on the lower one) Edit: I forgot that is the same thing on the first day of the second week, instead that Joshua joins our team.
In the DS version the first time Joshua talks with Neku he adresses Neku as "Neku" before asking his name, i read somewhere that it was a translation mistake but i choose to believe it was on purpose
24:50 You actually do get more hints at what her Entry Fee was with the secret reports and her convos with Neku and Shiki on Day 4 and Beat when he talks about their past together.
Yeah, it’s pretty explicit through Beat’s dialogue in the third act of the game. He talks about Rhyme as a driven person, someone with hopes and dreams, and contrasts her with his own lack of ambition. And I’m pretty sure he even unambiguously says that her hopes and dreams were her entry fee at one point, if I’m remembering correctly.
I remember that one time I went to Shibuya and just walked aimlessly without following a map, and just from what I remembered of the game and managed to find all the iconic places, including the wall painting Neku admires. If they include Shinjuku in the next game, it'll be fun to see if I can recognized some of the places I visited too. Heck, imagine seeing Square Enix's office but instead it's called Quadratum🤣
This game honestly has some of the best video game osts. Someday, the Kh version of calling, the twister that was used for the Nintendo switch version’s game trailer, rush hour, O parts Give me a chance, transformation, runaway, emptiness and, the Japanese versions of most of the songs like hybrid, and so much more. I’m glad this game is reaching more people who would wanna talk about it to spread the world to more people.
That's a bit of an understatement. The secret reports also flesh out the mechanics of the Underground (and the whole "fighting on separate screens" concept in the DS version), contextualize Another Day as part of the story, explain how Neku's ability to use any and every pin/psych is both unheard of and relevant to the plot, deal with a couple of _insanely important_ events that otherwise appear to be plot holes...
@@Tinlion09 exactly which is why I feel bad about it, I haven't seen anyone making a video or talking about the reports it's frustrating. heck ESPECIALLY the last hidden report that you get after playing the extra day. I wanted to talk about that one for so long but found nobody ;-;
@@leonb7747 You mean the report for Another Day or A New Day? Tbh, I still haven't played Final Remix. All I know is that (spoilers!) the Reaper who sold you in-app purchase items in the mobile version is the evil mastermind, and also Shinjuku's Reaper's Game went horribly wrong somehow?
@@Tinlion09 no no not the switch version, I am talking about the OG ds one there was a report you get after you play in that "parallel" world story I think?
I was in highschool when TWEWY released on the DS. One of my close friends was super into it (coincidentally the same guy who got me to play Persona 3, how about that?), so I gave it a shot. My entire first playthrough, I hated the characters, but loved the music and gameplay. The game fully clicked for me once I started reading the journal pages you find and trying to get 100% completion, and especially on a second playthrough. There is so much more to everything in this game than meets the eye; so much depth hidden behind the presentation. It's something truly special. Definitely try to play it on the DS if you can. The experience is much more enjoyable than the more finicky versions they would release later, but even with that, I recommend the game on any platform just for the experience of growing through Neku's story. Great video, Nam, have a good one!
Thanks for reviewing this. TWEWY is one of the most unique gaming experiences I've ever had (especially since I played it on the DS where it had a control scheme that will probably never be replicated ever again). The plot is really quite good, like a very smart shounen manga/JRPG, and its dizzying plot twists never feel cheap or unearned. Not only that, all of the characters are really great and you come to genuinely care about them by the end of the game, no small feat (and what separates a decent RPG from a great one, imo). edit: Oh, I will add that missed/awkward inputs were definitely part of the original game experience too, though I can't say if they're better or worse in the Switch port as I have not played it.
this comment contain spoilers for dragon Ball fighters Z I'm just saying this game is probably better than manga there's probably better manga out there but what I know about shonen animes they get really weird and confusing and convoluted and power steering in fact some video games just start making stuff up yes that stuff that I do I don't know if this is true or not because I'm playing an anime game based off of showing the anime without actually seeing the anime so I'm pretty sure in dragon Ball Z people would not turned into Androids the Androids will always made Androids I know the Androids will turn into humans but I'm pretty sure the humans never got turned into Androids with numbers and yet this is a part twist in the game I don't know why that's the attention I went on now back to this game really good it deserves a fighting game but also it deserves the winning game mode and Kingdom hearts because of the lot more catchy songs that we good for that genre in fact it deserves it more than persona because I'm just saying the music in this game is good but also somebody is sexual like give me all your love that's a song that's really sexual for no reason this game is just so good
In dream drop distance Joshua takes rhymes dreams to make a portal between the worlds sora and riku are in. Think that really supports the idea that her entrance fee was her dreams
The ost 10/10 the characters 12/6 the gameplay ?/10 This is the game that has changed my outlooks on life the most. When I first played it I agreed with most of what Joshua was saying. We as people might look similar, might sound similar, but our goals, dreams, ideals, how we think, all of that is unknown to all but the person themselves. This was back when I was lonely and had few friends so I saw the world around me as unknowable. Then I met people, people who I wanted to understand who I looked at in confusion, those that are opening my eyes to new possibilities. As Joshua said Only by allowing strangers in, we can find new ways to BE ourselves.
Ah... Joshua. I always thought that he was the embodiment of temptation/devil's advocate. The players are working to change and evolve into a positive mind state (angel's idea) and he is there to test the advances of Neku in the first run. Is he really changing or is it just because of one element (Shiki) and he doesn't really believe it? Joshua confronts him with his past world views like a mirror, and in the end, Neku wasn't comfortable with those ideas. He changes so much that his third entry is the other players. Not his chances of winning (although that is the side effect) but the chances of meeting new people. And that is impressive for someone like him. Joshua is my favourite character of the bunch, hard to understand but the most interesting.
No talk about the secret reports? Those add so much to the story it's so interesting learning about the inner workings of this world in side content so as to not take away from the character driven and interesting story.
@Just Some Guy without a Mustache but that's not true why do you lie to people well just some guy you're a liar you should be called just some wire don't lie to people that's bad
There's a trick to the Minamimoto boss fights. He doesn't move very often on his own, but he will dodge your cursor. If you make use of indirect attacks, you can rack up combos while he just eats the damage.
I still think the combat in the original was pretty innovative and was inherently tied with the themes of the game. Every rerelease hasnt quite captured the Ludonarrative harmony... Its a shame, but its obvious why it couldnt be replicated wholecloth. either way, looking forward to the future with Neo Twewy!
A small nitpick. Its about the partner system. Back when TWEWY was just a DS title, each partner was tied to the analog pad and to attack you had to navigate a grid of analog movement directions. Each partner had a different gimmick to create the sync move. Shiki had a find the correct card for three mysterious cards, Joshua was all about numbers, multipliers and dividends and Beat was all about making poker hands. And yes, the most difficult thing in the ds version was the double screen. Thankfully, the partner had an auto mode
after the game made me relate so hard to Neku with his lonely nature and refusal to let anyone in i was genuinely crying so hard when i got to the ending, it made me so incredibly emotional. i don't think any other game has gotten to me as much as twewy did, this game is truly special
Fun fact. Sho Minamimoto 's first fight has 3141 hp and his second fight has 5926 hp. These are the first 8 digits of Pi and his boss theme of Transformation refers to the mathematical factors of Translation, rotation, reflection and dilation!
Here's an important note for people that want to try this game out on switch, you can also play it on portable mode and just use your hands, it's way smoother if you don't like the motion controls and there's no real graphical downgrade
Or you could just use two joycons it makes the game much easier because that way you don't have to wait for the partner pin you can just attack with both joycons at the same time and that makes it a lot easier to kill the bosses and get think up and so you can use your special attacks so yeah you should use two controllers for this game
this isnt true actually. The Survive 7 days is already a common trope and its called "Your Days are Numbered" and has been used on earlier Shin Megami Tensei games than Devil Survivor. SMT also has been using the Tokyo setting way long than TWEWY.
Amazing review!! You did the game justice. Very good script and narrating. Your coverage of the story especially was excellent. You summed it up in an easy to understand, but engaging way. And you slowly introduced other layers and twists. It felt like I re-experienced the story in just 15 minutes. Even though I played the game 2 times already, hearing you tell these characters' stories, highlight what made it emotional and compelling, and reveal twists, was very enjoyable as I had already forgotten many of the details. It did a great job selling how well thought out and powerful the story is. I agree with the rest of the review as well. You dedicated an appropriate amount of time to each aspect of the game. Almost half the review covering the story, and focusing most of the criticism on the controls.
This video was a banger. The story of this game already invested me into liking the game, I might not play it today but I'll try it out someday in the future. Again, this video was great and very interesting, I can't wait for your Persona Q video!
if you can, try out the DS version, mechanically speaking, its more harder than the iPhone and Switch ports but once you get used to it, its such a great experience and the combat flows in a much more smooth way, storywise, pick whatever version you actually can afford, the story is incredible and has so many themes and life messages that can resonate with so many people
One of the things I had the hardest time wrapping my head around, weirdly, is that there are a few drops that are exclusive to lower difficulties as well. I had a few times when I needed a specific pin and knew it would be dropped by a specific enemy but I couldn’t get it to drop no matter how high I set the difficulty. One Google session later, turns out I needed to set the difficulty to easy instead. Also if the motion controls ever get too annoying, playing in hand-held mode is done entirely through the touchscreen. I played entirely in hand-held mode and enjoyed it immensely.
To be fair way I just realized something oh my God I don't know but what if actors lift off square because I'm just saying it seems weird that we got a game after the road is of you that I'm pretty sure came out one year afterYes it did come out one year after the load ends with you and that game is shimmy gummy tendency devil survivor which I find strange but this proves it square did it before actress because the rest of the persona games and the other actress games usually take place in a fictional city oh in a magical world and then shimmy got me can't say devil survivor came out and decided to take place in Japan in real Japanese cities meaning yes square did it before it was cool
TWEWY is honestly my favorite game of all time, when I heard you were doing a review I was ecstatic. If it counts for anything I'd say you did the game justice, hopefully this introduces it to more people.
Great video as always, glad you had a good time despite the janky Switch controls. As you noted, the combat definitely not as good as the DS original and I think even detracts a little from the theme of trusting others, given that in the DS version, Neku can't even see his partners while fighting. I know you tend not to go into extra content and NG+ in your videos, but did you give the Extra and Another Day scenarios a try? I'm curious about your opinion on them.
As of right now, I haven't played through the post game chapters. I could make a stream out of it if enough people are interested, but as of right now, I'll try to go through it when I have the time to do so.
@@NamsCompendium I definitely would be interested in seeing that, although I probably wouldn't be able to see it live so I hope it's available afterwards if you do.
You seem to have forgotten Solo Remix, the phone version and the basis for the combat on the Switch/Final Remix (also the music arrangement option is based on Solo, not DS, though it is mostly just decompression and improved quality). Solo also added some music (Tatakai comes to mind) and a few other minor changes that reappear in Final, Coco specifically comes from Solo, in that version there was some microtransacrions that added menu music, easy money/stats/rare materials, etc, and she was the "storekeep" for them
Twewy and its sequel nails a tone and general style that no other piece of media has and It makes me sad that unless an insanely unlikely 3rd game happens I'll never get to experience it again
Probably the best TWEWY review out there. I enjoyed the Beat/Rhyme arc the most and I highly advise playing the DS version. It's one of those games that are tailor made for the hardware they're on.
@@Tsugandate another Day is an extra chapter that takes place in an alternate universe A new day is an epilogue with I think five chapters that teased the sequel
I think everyone forgets there was also a mobile port of this game. For me, playing on my IPad was absolutely the best experience. It gives you lots of precision but also makes it easy to keep the quirks of the gameplay mostly intact.
It's kinda imprivise how you manage to say a shit ton of good thing about the game and yet feel like half of it, just show how well made is the game. I didn't got the entire plot first time , i had to watch some video , but even without understading 100% at first things like 2 players pins , Joshua shwoing up on first day and whole plot with the red pins show how tight and well planned the story is. Still blow my mind. Or how Megumi never showing his hands is done on purpose because he has a timer on his hand. It's pretty amazing how little details like that matters. Not mention how this gameplay and mechanic connect with the story and themes. Trusting people is key element of the story and in the game only by learning to play with other character , you gonna able to win a lot of ifight. Only understaind how Shiki, Joshua and Beat play , you gonna win. Just like in the story. I might not be able to connect or understand some themes , but quality of the narrative/story is very clear.
Just a personal tip. Phone and tablets pens work on Switch, and I think playing the game portable using one of those is by far the best experience. The touch controls are as close to the DS version as you can get. It's really precise and responsive that way. And for some people it might be even more confortable than the DS version since you don't have to keep track of 2 screens at once in battle. The only problem is that the Switch doesn't come with a pen by itself, but if you have one around or you think it'll be worth it to get one for the game, please do it.
This really is a great video, like I haven’t played this series and I do wish to now after kinda skimming through this trying to avoid the odd spoiler. The depth you go into in your reviews is amazing and it’s clear to see the amount of work you put into not just this but all your videos. So I just wanted to say thank you for that
The original DS release was the ultimate way to experienced all the game had to offer. Everything from the art designs to the gameplay were built specifically for the DS. I played the DS and the Android version. The android version lost quite a fair bit of what make the original a very special game.
There's also a mobile version of the game, and my personal favourite. The controls are similar to the switch version, but as you are on a phone screen is a lot more comfortable
For a guy who played the original game you did the game justice in your explanation, the world ends with you is a very great game that stays with you, and isn't something you forget about, I love the interesting battle system and the characters, and yeah the soundtrack was so good. The partners system was also refreshing too, I believe everyone should play this game.
for the record, the original game's controls, you equip pins, and use the touch screen to move and make neku do stuff, through slashing, drawing, scratching, dragging or tapping the screen. Your Partner is on the top screen, and you use the d-pad (or the A,B,X,Y buttons if you're left handed) to control them at the same time, hitting the left most button, they attack left, right most, they attack right. up can lead to an air combo or jump, and down is dodge or block. hitting the attack for your partner opens a branch that can split off to work on the fusion/sync, and you get to the end of the branch by hitting the card at the end of the branch. Shiki card matching guessing game, Joshua higher or lower, and Beat's is confusing suit thing and both Neku and his partners share 1 health bar. I probably made it sound more complex than it is, because i end up just spamming the side the enemies are on for the partner and hoping RNG is on my side so i can use the Fusion
Meme is a word that is over 100 years old. It's pop-culture usage is a very specific usage, but it means basically the same thing, just broader. Memes are things like inside jokes or unique ideologies to certain cultures within a specific point in their timeline.
11:25 In the post-game, you can get an item that increases the maximum number of battles you can chain together. This, alongside the adjustable level system, makes it so you can change a rare drop with say, .135% of dropping into a 100% chance of dropping, as long as you're willing to fight a lot of really difficult battles leading into it. For certain post-game builds, and for seeking out every item for completion's sake, this is ESSENTIAL. As far as the Final Remix version goes, I prefer gyro controls if only because movement is combat is mapped to a different button than psych use, so it's very easy to dodge enemy attacks. Further, using both joy-cons to play as both characters in co-op is a very viable strategy for increasing damage output and sync gain.
i just beat the game (final remix version) but the game was honestly perfect in handheld mode when i used a budget phone/tablet stylus, so i definitely would recommend playing it that way over the pointer controls.
I know this review has been out for some time but for the switch port I found that removing it from the dock solved the issues with the gyro scope since it played more like the phone port where you used your finger as the cursor
There’s another version that you can play on Android and IOS called TWEWY: Solo Remix. It’s what the switch version was based on, but the controls are actually good.
People need to stop acting like the controls are bad in the Switch version lol. It has a learning curve and can be a little finnicky at times, but that much applies to every version of the game, (including the DS version.) It's also worth noting that if you play the Switch Port in Handheld mode it plays identically to Solo Remix.
if you want to play this and don't have a DS, the android/ios/tablet version is a perfectly acceptable alternative that plays quite well it gives you the ability to pick up a cheap stylus to play the game with, and is a better looking game overall than the DS version despite being ~$15, it's a worthwhile purchase, so I highly recommend giving it a shot that way ... i mean, if you can find the game on the DS it's truly a unique experience due to the integral nature of the dual screen, but if we're looking for accessibility one's phone really can't be beat.
FOR years The Closest Thing we Had to a Sequel to The World Ends with you Was Kingdom Hearts DREAM DROP DISTANCE and a one shot Manga Kingdom Hearts Being tetsuya Nomuras big series and is tied to Twewy especially if you've seen KH3s secret ending And Now after Years We Finnaly Have a Sequel and an anime adaptation. yeah, everyone's going to go on about the secret reports, but they're admittedly the only thing that's ever truly incentivized me to 100% a game. the composer/conductor b-plot makes the game actively enjoyable on at least one repeat playthrough. also, another day. a canon alternate universe based on yu-gi-oh logic from the game's minigame. 10/10
I actually had no idea this game even existed until a year ago, and now it’s definitely one of my favorite games of all time! (Though I’ve only played the ds version)
A few things from someone who played the DS version of the game: One: Not limited to the ds version, after you beat the game you can go back and play any day in any week you like with your current stats, pins, and whatever partner you want. This is vital to the post game because in every day, there is a secret report that you can get written from the point of Mr. Hanekoma, telling us a bit more about the reapers game from the perspective of a reaper. Each of these reports are obtained by a special mission and there is one for every day. There is also a secret day called Another Day in which Neku and almost everyone else in the story is obsessed with the Tin Pin Slammer minigame from the main story. While rather funny and entertaining, the game's secret boss is also in this day (I won't spoil what or where it is, just look around Shibuya, you'll find it eventually). Two: A bit more about how the DS version works: You and your partner are split up onto two screens, with Neku being on the touch screen and controlled by the stylus, and your partner on the top screen controlled by the D pad. You and your partner act at the same time, get attacked at the same time and share a health pool. Neku controls much the same as in Final Remix, but the partner now has their own move set. By using the D pad to perform branching combos, you could pick up different things at the end of them. For Shiki: you had to guess a series of cards by ending your combos differently, with Joshua you have to end on a higher, lower, or equal number than what the game gives you, and with beat you have to basically play match two with cards. All of these little mini games serve to charge your meter instead of sync and attacking in tandem with your partners. Overall, the DS combat is much more robust and I'd personally recommend playing that version over Final Remix if you have a DS. It's cheaper too: about $20.00 pre-owned at GameStop as of the writing of this comment, but we'll see what Neo coming out does to that. Three: A lesser known piece of trivia is that TWEWY actually had a primitive version of Street Pass before the 3DS did. The exact name of the mode escapes me at the moment, but on the title screen you can select this mode in which your currently equipped pins will gain AP based on how many other people you meet with the game in this mode. It works in sleep mode too! Though the inclusion of this mode is somewhat problematic for the game itself because there are actually 3 types of AP in the game and the game just straight up does not go over this. Ever noticed that the AP bar below your pins is segmented into 2 colors? That's the game differentiating between combat AP and the AP bonus you get for leaving the game off. Why does this matter? It influences pin evolution. While not mattering for the main playthrough, you really want evolved pins for the post game, and some can only be obtained through having a majority of a specific type of AP. Remember how I mentioned that there are 3 types of AP but only listed 2? Well the last type is only obtainable through this street pass feature, and as you can imagine, not many people go around with this game in street pass mode. Luckily there is a workaround for this, albeit a clunky one. If you leave the game in street pass long enough without meeting anyone, the game will give you a "mystery encounter", saying you bumped into an alien or some psychic being or something and will give you a bit of this 3rd AP type. However, this takes forever. You'll usually only get one of these encounters every 3 hours or so, which sucks considering some of the best pins are locked behind getting this 3rd AP type. It can take literal days of leaving the system in this mode to get the pins you want. The worst part is, the game doesn't even tell you this. You have to go to a dedicated wiki or TH-cam video to find all of this out.
This is one of my favorites. I love the characters, the story is fun, there are some genuinely really great emotional moments, there’s a decent amount of customization, and it all gets tied together with a super unique and fun battle system…in the DS version (my personal definitive edition, although each has its own perks). Just an awesome title, and I recommend it to anyone remotely interested.
The touch screen is way better than with the gyro. I never had issues. And I thought the touch screen was once the issue but turned out it was the sequence of the pins. If you have pins that do similar things the order of it put first
TWEWY is one of my favorite games of all time and playing through it at the time in my life in which I did I feel helped me become a better person. It's one of those piece of media that you can point to and say "I am who I am because of this." I watched the first episode of the anime this morning and almost cried because I was so happy. Watching your review I'm glad that I did not pick up the switch version. I absolutely love the combat in the original and everything you described sound provably worse than it was the first go around.
The best way to play this game is honestly on mobile. There was a release of this game on Android that was actually done quite phenomenally. It's the way I originally played through the game and it felt super smooth and satisfying to control the pins that way.
The Switch version is actually a port from the mobile version, hence the gyro controls. I really recommend the mobile since it controls MUCH more smoothly and is a bit more approachable than the original DS version. But i understand mobile not being a big thing for Western audiences but this game was an exception for me in that aspect. :)
I never picked this one up, you sold me on it! Plus, the second game looks super interesting! Story wise, do y'all think i'll be good with only watching the anime?
It's hard to say for sure right now because it only just started airing. The first episode was pretty faithful, even though there were smaller moments that were cut from it. I still recommend playing the game above all else if you want the full story experience, but I don't think you can go wrong with the anime.
to this date for me this is the most peculiar game i've ever played, the character development is awesome, the gameplay is fun as hell and the soundtrack is just on another level. I love The World Ends with You so much
i believe the controls are more or less preference, after i fist played the game on switch when it first came out i was mainly playing on handheld mode not only it was really comfortable for me but it was fun as hell aswell, i had zero problems with the controls, after beating the game i saw all the negative feedback on how "the controls are unresponsive" and how "they dont work properly" i think its really unfair for people to call the controls bad because they arent used to them(i am talking about the touch screen controls,i believe the dock mode controls were more of an afterthought than anything else)
I think people are talking about dock mode when they say the controls are bad. They are necessary for playing on a TV and are used in the multi-player so people tend to think it's the intended way to play. The touchscreen controls are really good tho and the switch port made me more aware of my partner than the original since I just focus on Neku and let the ai handle the upper screen.
@@frimeka9492 Yes basically that but i did come across a few youtubers which critiqued the touch controls without even properly trying them out and just ended up playing the game docked which i think is the reason why people gave such a negative response to its controls. The game was intended for touch controls only and it shows, and while in handheld mode the game plays really good as it should
I love this franchise so much, so much and honestly fell in love with the characters over the course of the game and I couldn’t help but tear up when the journey ended.
Personally, I still feel a bit sad that we probably can never replicate the deep, meaning and feel the battle system on the DS have over all the remake. There was 1 part earlier on in the game where Neku question if Shiki is even helping out at all in battle since he don't see Shiki at all during battle, as Shiki also don't see him at all, and later on after a "certain" event Mr H explained how they fight 2 versions of the noise at once, and noise can only be defeated if both versions of the noise is defeated (which just mean that the noise share the same HP bar between 2 screens). It really drive home why Neku make the decision he made in "that" event, how the 2 partners have to trust on each other story wise and even how the sync system work (if u hit the same enemies at the same time on both screen the sync guage goes up)
It’s honestly of the best battle systems I’ve ever seen. Super unique and fun to mess around with, even though it had a bit of a learning curve to it lol
In the switch version is more comfortable use the touch screen instead of the joicons but this just force to play the game in tablet mode, is also the same mode of the mobile version but the mobile version doesn't have the extra content
I didn't remember some of the cool gameplay elements of this game, or how cool the story got, though the ending was a little bit convoluted. I remember this game fondly nonetheless, and yeah, judging from the gyroscope thing, I'm glad I got to play it on DS way back when.
You actually don't need to balance between two characters at any point in the original TWEWY release because you can set all partners to fully automatic and they do pretty well on that. Maybe just bring some solid healing when you need to grind in Hard mode for stuff you want, but besides that you can just let your partner do there thing. The only time you actively have to control your partner, Neku doesn't have to do anything, so yeah no that whole focus on two characters on different screens thing is an entirely optional feature.
Personally I had no problem playing in handheld without a stylus. Found it pretty easy to be way more precise as the input commands aren't complicated to get much in terms of miss inputs. The only problem with it is that the tip of my finger would get sore but I was also playing it all day so I don't think it was a major issue.
i’m really happy for the director for getting sequels and an anime adaptation. it’s not my favorite game, but i did really enjoy it. looking forward to the future

I know there's the funny "haha Shibuya like P5" joke, but the funny thing is part of why I really liked P5 being set in Shibuya was because of TWEWY being one of my favorite games ever
Same here. Always get excited whenever I see 109 in P5 (and IRL) because I'm so used to 104 in TWEWY 😂
Literally every game that goes for this setting takes placa in Shibuya, sometimes even in the same buildings.
@@izzy1356 it's 705 though, 109 is a trademark and registered entity
@Just Some Guy without a Mustache it's reverse because this game didn't sell well not even 1 million on ds.
Also, I highly recommend giving the DS version a try when you get the chance. It's a bit of a learning curve but once you get accustomed to the dual-screen gameplay, it's by far one of the most mechanically in-depth and satisfying combat systems in any JRPG.
I agree, and definitely more fun than the switch version. It's a lot harder to legitimately come by though, unfortunately.
Honestly, that was one of the reasons I was hesitant to check out the rerelease for a long time, I managed to get a copy back in 2012 fresh off the hype from Dream Drop Distance and it’s by far my favorite DS game that I own a physical copy of.

Didn’t Beat also say that was her entry fee during week 3 when it was revealed they were siblings?
@@notafbiagent473 Pretty sure he does but also given that she has a scene that is literally about "I don't have direction in life and don't really think about the future" it was pretty much a given. If anything I found Beat's entry fee to be the most depressing given how much he adores his sister.
@@davidalicea6705 The sequel wasn’t even conceptualized until the release of Final Remix. Square didn’t think the game was popular enough to warrant one until FR came out which sparked some interest for a sequel. They just went off of that when developing the plot.

The meaning got a bit lost nowadays, but kinda still the same =/
Mimeme?
Mimetic Mutation...
XD
I'm hoping that Neo still has the meme-inspiring mechanic. Now more than ever, memes are a recognizable part of people's lives. They also very neatly encapsulate one of TWEWY's most important themes: trends, and making/following/breaking them.
_COME GET SOME HOT STUFF_
If I recall, it's supposed to be a reference to memetics, as coined by Richard Dawkins, saying that memes are ideas that replicate like a virus, our minds being the host.
Senator Armstrong?
Cool fact of the game: Joshua actually appears at the first day of the first week, near Hachiko. In Solo Remix and Final Remix is hard to notice, since the chatting scene pass and Joshua dissapears after it, but in the DS version, you can still see him in the scene (This is because that the chatting scenes are shown on the upper screen, while you can still see the player and the people on the lower one)
Edit: I forgot that is the same thing on the first day of the second week, instead that Joshua joins our team.
YES so happy to find I wasn't the only one that noticed!
Yeah it's a really nice detail.
Shows that Joshua would've probably teamed up with neku in the first week if he hadn't met shiki
@@indecisiveponderer643 he was probably there to observe his proxy, and see how he did
In the DS version the first time Joshua talks with Neku he adresses Neku as "Neku" before asking his name, i read somewhere that it was a translation mistake but i choose to believe it was on purpose
I noticed that too when I replayed The Game
24:50 You actually do get more hints at what her Entry Fee was with the secret reports and her convos with Neku and Shiki on Day 4 and Beat when he talks about their past together.
Alright buddy that's the last straw.
*LEAVE ME ALONE! XD*
It's been a while, but if I recall rightly.
Beat's entry fee was Rhyme's Memories
Rhyme's entry fee was her hopes and dreams.
Lolooo
I remember that one time I went to Shibuya and just walked aimlessly without following a map, and just from what I remembered of the game and managed to find all the iconic places, including the wall painting Neku admires. If they include Shinjuku in the next game, it'll be fun to see if I can recognized some of the places I visited too. Heck, imagine seeing Square Enix's office but instead it's called Quadratum🤣
Twewy 2 kinda half calls out those of us who just went to Shibuya gawking around at all the places from Twewy 1.
It's just so cool to see how Nomura's character design skills evolved during the course of time but still managed to maintain that iconic look.
Not sure how but the quality of these videos just gets better and better!
What about the menu theme? "It's so wonderfull", even tho is short, it hits hard lmao
The fandom is doing its best to spread the word about this game!
Fun fact the kh version of calling it's a song you melody of memory
Oh man I kinda hoped you'd go into the "secret reports" they really shown some twists I never expected. Nevertheless great video

This is the game that has changed my outlooks on life the most.
Fully agree
This is why this game is a masterpiece. It's relatable

Ah...
If you make use of indirect attacks, you can rack up combos while he just eats the damage.
yeah, i always use distance abilities like the fire bullets pins when that fight's coming up
but it goes from being frustrating to a bit too easy
Interesting fact:
TWEWY inspired the "survive 7 days" of the Devil Survivor games
this isnt true actually.

Criminally underrated game ...
This video was a banger. The story of this game already invested me into liking the game, I might not play it today but I'll try it out someday in the future. Again, this video was great and very interesting, I can't wait for your Persona Q video!
if you can, try out the DS version, mechanically speaking, its more harder than the iPhone and Switch ports but once you get used to it, its such a great experience and the combat flows in a much more smooth way, storywise, pick whatever version you actually can afford, the story is incredible and has so many themes and life messages that can resonate with so many people
"only rivaled by that dreaded P-word" made me laugh too hard XD

Oh ok took me a second, he means persona
One of the things I had the hardest time wrapping my head around, weirdly, is that there are a few drops that are exclusive to lower difficulties as well. I had a few times when I needed a specific pin and knew it would be dropped by a specific enemy but I couldn’t get it to drop no matter how high I set the difficulty. One Google session later, turns out I needed to set the difficulty to easy instead. Also if the motion controls ever get too annoying, playing in hand-held mode is done entirely through the touchscreen. I played entirely in hand-held mode and enjoyed it immensely.
I agree, as Nomura's more urban style is perfect, given the fact it takes place in a fictional version of an actual Japanese city.

Solo also added some music (Tatakai comes to mind) and a few other minor changes that reappear in Final, Coco specifically comes from Solo, in that version there was some microtransacrions that added menu music, easy money/stats/rare materials, etc, and she was the "storekeep" for them

I might not be able to connect or understand some themes , but quality of the narrative/story is very clear.
that second player pin was one hell of a chekhov's gun
Just a personal tip. Phone and tablets pens work on Switch, and I think playing the game portable using one of those is by far the best experience. The touch controls are as close to the DS version as you can get.
It's really precise and responsive that way. And for some people it might be even more confortable than the DS version since you don't have to keep track of 2 screens at once in battle. The only problem is that the Switch doesn't come with a pen by itself, but if you have one around or you think it'll be worth it to get one for the game, please do it.

Oh! My favourite game of all time!
Such an underrated channel! Great job
I look forward to a follow up after playing some time with the DS version because of how drastically different the partner and combo systems are.
For a guy who played the original game you did the game justice in your explanation, the world ends with you is a very great game that stays with you, and isn't something you forget about, I love the interesting battle system and the characters, and yeah the soundtrack was so good. The partners system was also refreshing too, I believe everyone should play this game.
The person most affected by minamimoto's attack was the one who wasn't hit by it.
for the record, the original game's controls, you equip pins, and use the touch screen to move and make neku do stuff, through slashing, drawing, scratching, dragging or tapping the screen.
Neku Sakuraba is like a Vessel memory of Sora in kingdom Hearts:Re:Chain of Hearts.
I know this review has been out for some time but for the switch port I found that removing it from the dock solved the issues with the gyro scope since it played more like the phone port where you used your finger as the cursor
Just commenting for the algorithm :^)
You're very noble. Good job buddy I'll do the same.
There’s another version that you can play on Android and IOS called TWEWY: Solo Remix. It’s what the switch version was based on, but the controls are actually good.
People need to stop acting like the controls are bad in the Switch version lol. It has a learning curve and can be a little finnicky at times, but that much applies to every version of the game, (including the DS version.)
It's also worth noting that if you play the Switch Port in Handheld mode it plays identically to Solo Remix.
I honestly think The iPhone version , the solo remix is the definitive version .
if you want to play this and don't have a DS, the android/ios/tablet version is a perfectly acceptable alternative that plays quite well
it gives you the ability to pick up a cheap stylus to play the game with, and is a better looking game overall than the DS version
despite being ~$15, it's a worthwhile purchase, so I highly recommend giving it a shot that way
... i mean, if you can find the game on the DS it's truly a unique experience due to the integral nature of the dual screen, but if we're looking for accessibility one's phone really can't be beat.

And iam Hyped
9:40 I... accidentally ran into the story while low-Level farming... WOW, was that an EARNED WIN!
XD
yeah, everyone's going to go on about the secret reports, but they're admittedly the only thing that's ever truly incentivized me to 100% a game. the composer/conductor b-plot makes the game actively enjoyable on at least one repeat playthrough.
also, another day. a canon alternate universe based on yu-gi-oh logic from the game's minigame. 10/10
I actually had no idea this game even existed until a year ago, and now it’s definitely one of my favorite games of all time! (Though I’ve only played the ds version)
A few things from someone who played the DS version of the game:
One: Not limited to the ds version, after you beat the game you can go back and play any day in any week you like with your current stats, pins, and whatever partner you want.
If you have pins that do similar things the order of it put first
This city looks a lot like persona 5
Don't remind me.
If you are wondering what I mean. I am talking about how P5 fans said the NEO TWEWY gave them major P5 Vibes.
It takes place in shibuya like in p5 but that's the only similarity
Persona 5 did invent Tokyo
Hi mori
Great review! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the sequel
In the animation series,, Neku has 2 player pins.. I didn't remember that from the game... unless...
Nah, that's in the game. It's even mildly plot relevant
The Switch version is actually a port from the mobile version, hence the gyro controls. I really recommend the mobile since it controls MUCH more smoothly and is a bit more approachable than the original DS version. But i understand mobile not being a big thing for Western audiences but this game was an exception for me in that aspect. :)
It doesn't support tablets or iPad does it?
I never picked this one up, you sold me on it! Plus, the second game looks super interesting! Story wise, do y'all think i'll be good with only watching the anime?
It's hard to say for sure right now because it only just started airing. The first episode was pretty faithful, even though there were smaller moments that were cut from it. I still recommend playing the game above all else if you want the full story experience, but I don't think you can go wrong with the anime.
@@NamsCompendium Aight i'll check it out then! & love the content btw!
@@DavidCastJRPGs stop being meta and depriving yourself of this experience bruh.
dive in. Stop the cap homie.
I'm doing you the favor
You'll absolutely miss out on a lot if you just watch the show. Basically missing everything.
@@RandomVids0987 @Juice thanks for the info i'll check it out!
Yay! New video, you are such a great reviewer.
to this date for me this is the most peculiar game i've ever played, the character development is awesome, the gameplay is fun as hell and the soundtrack is just on another level.
The game was intended for touch controls only and it shows, and while in handheld mode the game plays really good as it should
Amazing in depth analysis! Just in time for the anime and the sequel too!
i just played the game and the controls are my fave thing, they were so creative and unique
I actually first played this game on my phone back in high school and that in my opinion was the best method to enjoy this game
I love this franchise so much, so much and honestly fell in love with the characters over the course of the game and I couldn’t help but tear up when the journey ended.
I played on the DS and the nostalgia is BIG
I played it on iOs, loved the touch screen controls on my 5S back then, since the screen was so small. Weird you didn't mention it at all...
Fully agree
I assume the sequel will be more like Final Mix
Still getting it!
XD
In the switch version is more comfortable use the touch screen instead of the joicons but this just force to play the game in tablet mode, is also the same mode of the mobile version but the mobile version doesn't have the extra content
I did have the DS game, but the controls confused me, so I traded it in.
same
I didn't remember some of the cool gameplay elements of this game, or how cool the story got, though the ending was a little bit convoluted.
The only time you actively have to control your partner, Neku doesn't have to do anything, so yeah no that whole focus on two characters on different screens thing is an entirely optional feature.
the people who havent played this game yet are so zetta slow. they are missing out on an amazing game
Heh, and there missing out on a so far great sequel. Some zeptograms never learn
Hanekoma certainly looks like a younger Sojiro Sakura huh?
For real??
Joshua is one of my favorite characters ever written in any kind of fiction. He's funny, sassy, and a complete asshole, and I love him so much.
