    I commend this video on being well thought out, but there is this trend of people specifically calling out The Last of Us being the best video game adaptation to date... when Netflix's Arcane isn't even 2 years old. It might be because of the live action aspect but even your mention of the Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation brings animation into the conversation. Though aspects of the Last of Us show were phenomenal, it still was incredibly flawed and left a divide with the fan base. Adversely, Arcane revived fans and brought in a new audience by producing something thoroughly great. Just seems like it was left in the dust because big names like Pedro Pascal were involved in the more recent adaptation.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I agree. Messed up no adding arcane in this video 😅 but I liked both arcane and cyberpunk 2077. Excellent series. I would say the last of us just received a lot of media attention and buzz with non video game players, which you need in a successful adaptation. Don't alienate the fan base but also make it inclusive enough for general audience viewers. I thought they did well and received more positive than negative criticisms. Unfortunately, too many just amazing adaptations or even movies or series in general just don't get the love they deserve. So some of this for me was finding that perfect medium of popularity and success between ravid fans and general audiences.

    I think the series is amazing and it's fun to see how a game became a series. Little things for example Joel walking around with a backpack the whole time, picking up and dropping guns, or the collapsing of the way back and then having to fight a bunch of infected before being able to continue remind you of the programmed world of a game.

    I'm surprised you didn't talk more about the numerous sucessful Japanese adaptations of video games that they've been doing since the 90s. Plus characters like Sonic seemed to have been somewhat immune to the video game film curse with most adaptations of the hedgehog into the film medium to be quite good. Street Fighter and Fatal Fury also had multiple movies from Japanese anime studios during the 90s as well as Square Enix making a CG movie for Final Fantasy.

    The Last of Us is a special game though - it already had a highly detailed, praised story behind it. Many games to this day, while they do contain more story elements, are still 'open' in their design to allow the player to take on the character. The Last of Us is more like an interactive movie with a lot of gameplay elements.

    • @crestofhonor2349

      Lots of games ahve stories out there and plenty of great ones. The problem is more on length and depth. Many RPGs have had great stories since the 80s but many of them have failed to get adaptations outside of a few like Dragon Quest Dai.

    I'm somewhat surprised you didn't talk about Assassin's Creed. I guess that might be considered a good thing: It wasn't bad enough to create controversy, but it wasn't good enough to be notable. That said, I really enjoyed the movie and find it re-watchable. I've also never played the game, so for me it's just a Michael Fassbender movie based on a Game property with "rules" of the story derived from the game.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  ปีที่แล้ว

      I made sure to show it in some of the montages but yeah... While it's a semi enjoyable watch. But like you said, not really memorable at all. The action sequences were fun, but I usually remember the storyline or structure of every movie I've ever watched but that one there wasn't a clear structure to it 😂

    • @eformance
      @eformance ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FrameVoyager I think the root issue comes down to how the story was told. It's very hard to tell stories with flashbacks and timeline cuts. You have to be a REALLY good director to pull that off. The plot was basically "take the family of assassins theme from the game, then burn down the entire thing in one grand effort". They broke the one rule of movie making: always leave room for a sequel.

    I was a huge fan of the Wing Commander series though never witnessing its silver screen adaptation when the it released. Heard it was an utter piece of crap and did nothing to stick to the original story line of the game. The story that I read years later was that all of the actors that signed on for the movie loved the script. When time came to start rolling cameras there was a complete rewrite of the movie.

      @@FrameVoyager Indeed. My older brother saw it and he was very disappointed with it. If you go and play the original games, especially WC2 which was my introduction to the series playing it on our family 386 PC at the time, each game has great story lines and the game play has aged well. Though you may have to forgive some of the cut scenes in WC3 and WC4. Not a lot of budget for the acting even with the casting of Mark Hamill and Thomas Wilson. Doom on the other should have never had a theatrical release….definitely stayed away from that dumpster fire as well.

    The Last of Us show is only the second-best video game adaptation of all time. I can't believe you didn't mention Arcane in your video. What Riot Games has managed to build is not only a game and an adaptation of it. It's sort of an entertainment framework of massive stories that cannot be ruined by actors.
