Chris Cornell (RIP) quite possibly had the greatest rock voices of all time. Not only was his range incredible but he was so strong at every point along the vast range. So much emotion conveyed by that man through song. He will be missed greatly.
Black Hole Sun is their biggest hit, but my vote would be to hit “Rusty Cage” next. A balls-to-the-wall banger and hey… it was great enough that Johnny Cash covered it Chris Cornell had one of the best voices ever
"Outshined" was the first song to get a lot of airplay on rock radio coming out of the 80's. It has a Metal sound with a grunge feel and features Cornell's voice at high power for most of the song.
I can't tell you, @Andy & Alex, how delighted I am with this reaction. Soundgarden was long overdue for a listen, and this track is just one of many exceptional songs of theirs (many have been mentioned in other comments). A full-album reaction of "Superunknown" would be more than appropriate ( though, truth be told, I'm still itching for a full-album reaction of Pearl Jam's "Ten" masterpiece). Cornell, as noted elsewhere, is indeed one of the top rock singers in history. His range and belt-ability are well-known, but as some have mentioned, the stripped-down, more emotional songs he released later in his career (such as his cover of Nothing Compares to U) cemented his legend and helped people realize he wasn't simply a screamer. He and I were born just a month apart, and as I'm from the Seattle area myself, I always felt a kinship with him. I'm still devastated by his premature loss, but I'm so glad that his music and voice live on.
Finally, Soundgarden! 🙌🙌🙌🙌"Burden in My Hand" is one of many amazing Soundgarden songs. Also check out Chris Cornell's sublime and haunting solo song "Seasons."
In addition to more Soundgarden, you need to check out "Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog. They were a tribute band for the late Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, consisting of Cornell, Eddie Vedder, and Wood's old band mates who would go on to form Pearl Jam with Vedder. They weren't a supergroup at the time they recorded, but they're definitely one in retrospect. Cornell's duet with Vedder ranks as one of the all time greatest vocal performances in rock.
Love when you jump into the 90's. Loved the music as a teen. As an adult, I have found a deeper respect for the unique artistry and talent of the 90's.
My vote for next Soundgarden song is Spoonman. That song is such a force, relentless drive that jumps out of the speakers. Makes me wanna jump up and thrash around every time!
For me, Soundgarden holds up better than any of the other grunge bands - just continue to amaze and surprise me. This album's incredible, but the previous one - Badmotorfinger - might be even better. "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" are the biggies, but "Jesus Christ Pose" will rip your faces off.
One of my favorite albums saw Chris in 1995 at Reading Festival here in England camp fires burning in the crowd and us all having fun drinking with the sun going down behind the main stage was magical!! Remember writing on my cigarette packet Kate 4 chris LOL..So glad I'm a Gen X nothing like the vibe we had back then!!!!!
Being from Seattle, I got to see Soundgarden, before they became famous, in small clubs around the city. Just totally awesome. The venues were intimate and the shows were like a family gathering. We lost a great one with Chris's passing. You guys might want to check out his other band, Audioslave, as well as his acoustic tunes. Nice choice guys.
Chris Cornell incredible singer/songwriter/musician. His mastery of melody shines. Love his acoustic gigs. Soungarden, Audioslave and Temple Of The Dog are the bands he's graced. I've been listening to his last album "Higher Truth" a lot. I love every song on it. "Murderer Of Blue Skies" is amazing. We share a birthday. I'm still broken hearted he passed.
I love it! Something about Chris' mellower side gets me every time. There is a Walmart video of Chris playing acoustic and singing "All Night Thing" and "Cleaning My Gun" goosebump inducing.
Great reaction Guys, 'Superunknown' is an amazing album. At this time in the '90s there were 3 albums which were about perfect, this, 'Pearl Jam - Ten' and 'Faith No More - The Real Thing' all these bands had great vocalists.
SPOONMAN. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Then you have to watch the video after. 💥💥💥💥🧨🧨🧨🧨 And then BURDEN IN MY HAND. Btw, drummer Matt Cameron is also Pearl Jam's drummer. #badass
after having lived through the 60's and 70's i had all but given up on rock music until the alternative movement started for real in the later 80's. this song is one of many that said "wake up everybody, rock is back".
During the 90s I worked on a project that took me across Europe to up date earth stations. My Technician and I would drive from site to site. Whoever was driving chose the music. This was always on his play list.
I feel very lucky to have seen the 92' Lollapaooza with Pearl Jam , Soundgarden , Ministry , Ice Cube , Tool and the Red Hot Chili Peppers . Soundgarden was absolutely AMAZING ! PK
A great song by Chris that was on the soundtrack from the movies Singles was...Seasons. It's acoustic, guitar only and Chris singing. Great song and great presence by Chris.
OMG such a rabbit hole! My fave reaction of yours ever! Been waiting for you to get Chris up here for years! Best singer ever! So many different sounds. Yes this was tame for him. Beautiful lyricist as well. Amazing acoustic stuff out there too. He’s best live! More Chris please! ❤❤❤❤ Slaves and Bulldozers if u want a fan fave that showcases insane vocal abilities. Metal, blues, hard rock all there! Burden in my hand if u want another awesome radio hit with deep lyrics that will keep u guessing!
6/4: Matt Cameron signature Ben Shepherd: Great bass player definition of underrated Kim Thayer: distinctive warm tone, just screams "COZY!" Not even going to mention the voice
One of my all time favorite songs❤ That’s the beauty of Chris. He doesn’t need to pop off, to show off. He was amazing. The band too. Holy shit. Makes me proud to be a Gen Xer.
I spent my twenties in the 90s. Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Melvins... these bands were this perfect blend of rock, punk, and blues we all heard as kids. It was the first thing our generation could call our own.
They have a deep catalog to dive into. Being from Seattle, I’ll suggest Spoonman. Written about & featuring Artis the Spoonman who was a busker that played around the city in the 90’s. He actually plays on the track & in the middle of the song, the band just lets him go off with just some sparse drumming to accompany him. Glorious!
Of course Chris is one of the greatest of all time, but drummer Matt Cameron deserves a lot of credit for his incredible work with Soundgarden. Check out Slaves and Bulldozers from the Badmotorfinger album. Maybe Chris’ most impressive vocal performance 👍🏻
Matt Cameron's drum work on 'Jesus Christ Pose' is simultaneously amazing and terrifying. The ability to keep *that* beat going for *that* length of time... Damn. Just damn. What a legend.
There are several songs that I put in the category of GREAT rock. This one is my fav. Chris Cornell is a master rock vocalist. When I first heard "Outshined", I knew it.
as long as we're doing grunge, could we PLEASE do "Vaseline" by stone temple pilots? that might be one of my favorite songs of that whole decade, and I listened to a LOT of grunge in my day.
Once you get to more 90s material, this probably becomes an S. Not because the rest isn't good, but this really is a masterpiece of its time in its delivery and messaging.
Probably my favorite vocalist ever. From his work with Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog to his solo work and Audioslave. There's so much to choose from. Even his covers are great.
This song is absolute perfection. Chris is amazing on all aspects of the vocals, and the lyrics are deep. That guitar riff is so good and the beat is steady calming. Love it!
Badmotorfinger saved my life! I listened to it on repeat for a year when my sister died in a car accident! She was 17 and I was 16! Music saved my life! Soundgarden and Zeppelin!!!
They never got as big as Pearl Jam or Nirvana, but there's no doubt to me their songs have aged much better. Superunknown was their biggest album, but their earlier albums also kicked ass. Badmotorfinger, Louder than Love, check out Temple of the Dog too.
I got to see him with Audioslave on one of the last Lollapalooza touring shows before it set up camp in Chicago only. What a fantastic performer! The loss of that voice is just heartbreaking.
Drummer Matt Cameron also became Pearl Jam's drummer, later in PJ's career. Guitarist Kim Thayil is sadly very underrated, but largely credited with the D-tuning that made "Grunge" so big. The Temple of the Dog song that came in second place on this poll feature vocals from Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), guitarists Mike McCreedy and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament (all from Pearl Jam) and Matt Cameron on drums.
I'm SO glad you mentioned Matt Cameron. Ask any rock musician or rock critic, and they'll tell you that Cameron is one of the best, arguably THE best, drummers in rock and has been for a long time. He's incredible and can do things other rock drummers simply can't. Just the fact that he was so casually able to go back and forth from Soundgarden to Pearl Jam, two of rock's defining acts over the past 30+ years, tells you something. And 'Hi', @junietunes2148!
@@MichaelJanes-ki2in Matt is incredible, he does some interesting rhythms with some definite jazz influence, but can be super heavy also, he's up there with Stewart Copeland IMHO.
As a 76 Year old grandma, I agree that Chris Cornell is definitely in the top ten male rock vocalists and can easily stand next to Plant, Coverdale or Mercury as a peer.
Nirvana always gets all the fanfare from this era. But I was always way more impressed with Soundgarden. Nirvana had some good lyrics and great hooks. But Soundgarden had the whole package along with some pretty cool musical ideas. They had prog rock elements dabbled into their music which were really cool.
I think it's because Nirvana made Grunge popular and mainstream worldwide. As a 90s kid from india, where we don't have much exposure to western music, Bands like Nirvana, Metallica, Linkin Park was our gateway to rock music. Soundgarden is definitely my fvt band in grunge scene. But without Nirvana, I never would have gotten into SG, AIC, Audioslave
The entire album (Superunknown) is an absolute masterpiece. Chris Cornell is my favorite make vocalist of all time and I had the honor to see him in various incarnations over a dozen times including seeing Soundgarden perform this album in its entirety in a small venue (Webster Hall in New York City) in 2014. Rest in Peace beautiful CC.
Dudes! Soundgarden!! Thanks for finally doing a song from them. There’s literally a ton of bangers you can do next… to name a few: Jesus Christ Pose, Outshined, Spoonman, Rusty Cage, The Day I Tried To Live, Burden In My Hand, Blow Up The Upside World, Pretty Noose, Superunknown, Let Me Drown, Nothing To Say.
This album “Superunknown” is among the best grunge albums ever. Absolutely worth a full album reaction
It's my pick for The Best!
I think it's not only THE best "grunge" album, but for me, it's top 5 of all rock albums, period.
Agreed. If any grunge album qualifies, this is the one. Every song holds up, even the weirdo deep tracks.
Also, Kickstand reminds me of a Ramones cover because it's a super fast less-than-2-minutes punky song.
Badmotorfinger or Louder than Love for me.
Soundgarden has so many incredible songs, "Outshined" will rock your socks off!
Yes Outshined is amazing and has a super heavy sound
I was thinking the same thing because Andy is looking California and feeling Minnesota and Alex is the opposite.
Outshined would definitely blow them away but really anything is good. Or even back to temple of the dog
I am 65 and I feel Badmotorfinger might be the GOAT of "hard" rock albums. And I grew up with some of the best music....lol
Outshined is easily my favorite Soundgarden song. That’s saying something.
This is a full album you two NEED to hit. Full stop.
Word 👏👏👏
Facts. This came out when I was in middle school and I wore the tape out. Great, great album.
YYYEEEESSSSSS!
Also, SPOONMAN! And maybe Slaves and Bulldozers.
My Wave on this album. A must listen
Fresh Tendrils is an underrated song on that album

my choice also
Also my choice.
Mine too.
Godammit I wish he was still here. RIP, sweet Chris ❤❤❤
Chis Cornell and Layne Staley are far and away the best singers to come out of the grunge era and up there in consideration for GOAT.
They are both so good! I love Layne also.
you forgot Scott Weiland .STP
...and what do they all have in common?....🤘😎
I would add Eddie Veder but that’s my personal taste. Cornell was magnificent.
Do love me some Eddie Vedder though
Soundgarden “The Day I Tried to Live” is another banger!!
That whole freaking album is KILLER!

"Outshined" pure Power from Chris. Also the lyrics are beautifully written🗣️🎙️🔥💯👊
More soundgarden please. They are the led Zeppelin of the 90s
true but man Blind Melon could've been a close contender if Shannon didn't die young
With a touch of Black Sabbath.
Next up 4 Soundgarden is from their Album Bad Motorfinger "Outshined" & "Rusty Cage", from thier Album Superunknown "Spoonman".
“Outshined “is a great one and “Rusty Cage” !!!! “Slaves and Bulldozers ““ Jesus Christ Pose” great songs for the album Bad Motor Finger !!!!!❤😊

As good as their newer albums are, the filthy grit of their "Badmotorfinger" album keeps me coming back for more, even today.
Kim Thayil is a lead-guitar master. Extremely talented band.
My vote for next Soundgarden song is Spoonman. That song is such a force, relentless drive that jumps out of the speakers. Makes me wanna jump up and thrash around every time!
I second the "Spoonman" recommendation. A banger for sure.
My least favorite Soundgarden "hit"

Slaves & Bulldozers, Searching with my Good Eye Closed. Badmotorfinger is such an amazing album.
Soundgarden and Alice are the two that get better with time.
Definitely more Soundgarden!!! This is how Chris grew into the amazing vocalist he was.
