Snap On Screwdriver Warranty: What's your experience? I've heard stories, both good and bad. Tell Us

  • My experience with Snap On Screwdriver warranty service has always been positive whether needing a new Phillips or slotted bit no matter the size, or a handle replacement meaning usually a full screwdriver replacement. But others have shared a different experience where replacements were limited to shafts only or just dealer stubbornness about whether the driver was abused or expected wear and tear.
What's your experience, good or bad? Tell us about it.

I’ve warrantied one screwdriver and it was a flathead with a broken tip. He warrantied it, but did tell me that he technically shouldn’t because it was used to pry lol. It does depend on the dealer, but my dealers have all been great. Technically, they don’t HAVE to warranty if you didn’t buy it from them, but the good ones will regardless.

@@johnb1121 About prying with the screwdriver? Probably, but I’ve never had a problem. Had a coworker today buy a set of drivers off the Mac truck. He asked about lifetime warranty and the dealer nodded then said, “Don’t pry with em.” I responded with, “What do you do with em then?” Lol. It does say not to pry on the handle, but again, never had an issue.

Funny you did this vid. Just a couple of weeks ago I had my dealer warranty an old square black handle #2 phillips and had to ask him NOT to give me a whole new one. The screwdriver in question belonged to a neighbor that passed away a few years back and it had some sentimental value to me. The tip was just worn completely out from use. He carefully changed to blade for me and it's back on my home workshop's pegboard where it will serve me well. I ended up with a lot of stuff from Al's shop but that screwdriver had been my #1 go to for my #2 screws! lol
That handle that felt funny and smelled is molecularly coming apart. The oil is literately separating out of the polymer. Snap-On knows it's an issue and never gave my any problem swapping them out. I had 5 handles do that, 3 of which were the stubby handles from around the late '80's early'90's. I'm curious of the date code on the one you have.

Your right but they are franchise,s. Just like McDonald’s - some are good and some are bad. My snap on guy that services the shop where I work is great. My Matco guy I use actually services one of my customers and I met him there one day - he is awesome. So
Much I drive an hour one way to see him. We do everything via phone most and meet in the morning or afternoon. Find a good rep , treat them well and keep them. And a good rep will keep you as well.

My dealer is great. He has both shafts and handles. I’ve had some old ones like yours with the black handle repaired and he has the black handles which are honestly my favorite as I do have instincts, old school square mac’s, and wiha micro finish as well. All are great I tent to abuse my snaps on’s because he is so good about the repairs.

Had a full set of the old black handles you show in your video.
Once they get older they get brittle.Anyway I have one break back to the shank. Went to the local snap-on AZ dealer asked me who I bought it from and they said well my dad got it from a tool truck in Michigan. He said there's no warranty on it. I asked if I could buy a handle but he said no.
So I have very limited Snap-on now.
Later I was told that I should have mailed them back to snap on directly.
I'm not sure what that would have changed.
I mean honestly they go through snap-on dealers more frequently than Sears stores went out of business

Good morning, your very knowledgeable, I like seeing another person who likes great quality tools , I’ve had some trouble with the vintage cabinet snap-on handles sweating. A snap-on said they can’t or he has never seen a screwdriver sweat oil , had 4 drivers I never used them , I would wipe them down every two weeks. I did get two replaced

Former Snap On dealer and former dealer tech: The handles are typically not warrantied, that has always been Snap On's policy. Many dealers will replace them but this will typically come out of there pocket. They have replacement handles they can sell. If the dealer breaks the handle doing a blade swap they will generally replace the handle.

I’ve not had a bad Snap-on dealer in 30 years or so, but having said that I’ve been a good customer to them! Can’t remember being refused a warranty, only the odd “I’ll replace it but I shouldn’t.” (On screwdrivers that I may have used as a pry bar, and ratchet repair kits) But other than that, no questions.

Back in the day, my BIL had a Snap-On franchise[1]... IIRC, the franchise agreement says in effect they're to honor the company's warranty for any broken tools presented to them... and to stop & service _all_ shops on their 'route' at least once a week.
In those days, 'clusters' of routes all had field group managers (I think thats what they were called anyway). Said managers stayed in the general area & assisted by 'stomping out grass fires', running to the branch warehouse to pick up hot orders, general 'coolie labor' help when/if needed, collected the brokens once a month, etc etc. However, things have changed...
Your right, their coverage & service now runs the gamut from hot through nonexistent... IMHO swiftly drifting towards the latter.
    [1] Seems like it'd be a great career...but IMHO, a horrible existence.

I used to have an old snap-on Phillips number four by 8-in blade with a red hard handle.
One day it started to stink like acetic acid. I'm thinking the plastic just breaks down over time.

I'm no mechanic and I only use my ratcheting screwdriver around the apartment for small jobs here and there. I contacted snap on because over the years, the ratcheting mechanism sounds a little different than it used to and it takes a little more force to activate. I contacted them in hope that they'd take it, open it up, lube it or whatever, and send it back. Just some proper maintenace. Instead, they just sent me a brand new one and told me to "scrap" the old one (basically told me to do whatever I want with it). So yeah, my experience with their customer service can be summed up in two words: Top-notch

My dealer replaces what ever part of it messes up but technically they only warranty the shaft. I think it all depends on the dealer. If you are a regular customer I think they will make it right no matter what. But I've heard of some bad dealers.

Those old Black plastic handle screwdrivers from Snap-on I had a set and after a couple years they started leaking a vinegar smelling oil I put them in a plastic bag and showed them to the Snap-on dealer he put gloves on and opened the bag and took a smell then closed the bag and gave me a complete set of new drivers of any style Snap-on screwdrivers found out that the PCB oils were leaking out into the tool box I had to wipe out the drawer with laquer thinners and dry it out quickly wearing gloves ... PCB's are cancer causing ...

I have a difficult time justifying a purchase of SO screwdrivers, when the Germans offer a multitude of excellent screwdrivers at a third the cost. Same goes for a Williams set of hard handles, if that's one's preference. There are some SO hand tools that IMO are worth the cost. Not the screwdrivers.
Thinking about it, how often does one use a screwdriver? Used a PH2 stubby to tighten a couple of screws on a door latch over the summer. Also had to open/close a box of electronics used to regulate a Baldor motor with a PH1. I think that was it. Professionally, likely depends on the trade. Like electricians who do use screwdrivers frequently.

I don't like to talk to dealers, most of them don't like to warranty, even if you buy from them. Snap on customer service it's great, but I think they are a little bit of busy from the past few weeks, hope they can keep up.

Terrible. First you have to find a truck. Then you have to hope the truck keeps a regular schedule. I used to just go to the warehouse. It was effortless until after a few years they said I have to exchange it with a driver. I don't buy Snap-on anymore.
