Doctor Who review of season 1 episode 6 where Nucti Gatwa almost gets Ruby Sunday killed because he's too pre-occupied with another man. Throughout most of this season the doctor has even been responsible for saving the people in the show, and it's the same here. This doctor isn't a hero, he's pathetic, and requires normal people to sacrifice themselves due to his poor decisions. The end of this episode is awful, after having not cared about Ruby throughout the entire episode we're supposed to believe he suddenly cares more about her than the world. And then when his fancy man goes instead, he just stops caring about him instantly! This shows Doctor Who can always get worse, and does. But surprisingly this wasn't written by Russel T Davies. Loki writers pulling out another banger it seems. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

    Black aristocrats.
    Open interracial dating.
    Open homosexual affairs.
People going down on one knee to propose marriage (not before Victorian times, they didn't)
"Okay" (not until Martin Van Buren became prominent in American politics; the word was coined as a shortening of his "Old Kinderhook" nickname)
"Wallflower" (not used for women who don't mix at parties before 1820)
And Billie Eilish on the soundtrack!
    *SO* 1813!
When the birds are the most historically-accurate part of the episode…

To be that person, the "old kinderhook" thing is a myth. "OK" is actually an acronym from early journalists who had to write in shorthand because of lack of recording devices. But still American, so your overall point is still correct.

What's the point of a show about time travel if there is no difference between the past and the current period?
Ruby walks through each "new world" without any seeming wonder or interest. And she and the Doctor just seamlessly fit in everywhere they go despite being strangers in strange lands.
Seriously, what is the point of the show anymore?

    • @newhandlewhodis

The doctor has always fit in everywhere he goes this is nothing new people have a habit too just believe and not question the doctor. Prime example being any single time he breaks into someone's home and they're like oh this is fine or when they say "why am I telling you all of this" and he responds "I just got one of those faces" this has been a trait of the doctor since forever even before nuwho

Typically his companions show a little more emotion when encountering robots, aliens, stretched bits of skin with faces and the Tardis itself. Remember when characters actually reacted to the weird and wonderful things that were happening around them?

Not only African and black not the same thing, but black and black are not the same thing. Africa is not one big happy POC fun times bouncy castle.
Rwandan Genocide - which, and lets be brutal here, is the reason 2 year old Gatwa moved to Scotland - was where 800,000 'blacks' were killed by 'different blacks' for the crime of being 'black'. The idea from the show runners that only Whites are racist when you have a lead actor who could have very nearly been murdered by blacks for being the wrong sort of black is disturbing. Literal race based genocide existed within living memory but no, white people are bigots.

Sooo... A. Why do his emotions have to be expressed by crying, specifically? And in almost every freakin' episode? B. The *Companion* is there for the audience to identify with, not the Doctor. C. RTD keeps talking like he expects to write for a horde of new Gen Z viewers who will make up most of the audience. Where are they then?

I don't think he understands by what we mean by Gen Z being more open about their feelings, is that while it is a bit true that we do open up a tad more but that doesn't mean that even Gen Z men just cry in the open. I am part of Gen Z and a man and none of my friends during my entire time at school ever really displayed tears unless they would be in pain after getting in a fight. At most they might eventually open up to a friend or something about being upset or angry or whatever but strangers not happening. Most of Gen Z that I know were fairly emotional stable and don't break down in tears or open up that easily unless we're talking extreme circumstances like a death or something which is a fair enough. I do believe we are a little more open with our feelings than say my fathers or grandfathers generation as even if either of them were in an awful amount of pain, they won't say anything which is rather frustrating whereas as Gen Z would.

And if those tears were earned by good storytelling and character development. I think the only time we saw 10 cry during his run with Rose was when his hologram faded from the parallel universe just before he was to tell Rose he loved her. And 11 cried when he lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angel. But before that the audience was able to make an emotional connection with the Doctor and his companions over the course of multiple episodes and story arcs. In these stories, we are able to grow with and follow the character which leads up to those emotional moments. Gatwa nor RTD have earned those moments.
Maybe Ruby/Millie has, and I think she's the only one with watching at this point.

    • @newhandlewhodis
      @newhandlewhodis 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, this is not true 😭. And so what if he's crying? It makes complete narrative sense. He is the last of his species, surrounded by death and destruction. Since the last Time War, he has been pushing himself forward, ignoring his problems and feelings through four to five regenerations. Finally, with the 14th, he was able to leave that guilt behind. He is healing and moving on. He is no longer the lonely mad god he once was after the Time War. He is no longer the 'Time Lord Victorious'; he is just the Doctor again, the man who stole a TARDIS from Gallifrey to adventure across the stars although still shaped but not defined by his past.
His crying is a sign of his healing. Forced to see idiots ignorantly heading towards their doom, thinking they are their pioneer ancestors, would evoke rage and sorrow in anyone. Have you never gotten mad at someone's stupid actions because you knew better? That helpless rage in the back of your mind, where you can only yell and watch their stupidity lead them to their doom, is what he is experiencing

Agreed. As a woman, I don't like super emotional men. I like emotionally aware men with their priorities right. Like, if a man lost his child and cried, I wouldn't judge one bit. And in fiction, when a male protagonist goes through hell and sheds a private tear at rock bottom, I find that very powerful. A true women enjoys supporting the man she loves when he's feeling low. It taps into that nurturing instinct. When women say they like emotional men, they are probably confusedly trying to say that they like strong men who lean on them in times of trouble or show vulnerability occasionally.

If a person feels the need to cry in public due to a recent trauma (it happens to the best of us), they usually find an excuse to leave so they can be in a private place. It's just human nature to avoid crying in public because it is a state of vulnerability and to some, shame.

Remember in the early days when they were hanging on for dear life, random fires starting and generally going through a bit of a rough time to travel across time and space? then the reveal that it can actually be really smooth, but you need 6 pilots, emphasising the drs loneliness and the fact that he has lost his entire race and is now on his own?
Not for the new doctor i guess, he seems to tell everyone, whether they care or not, about gallifrey, that he is a timelord, the last one no less, that he is in possession of a tardis, the most powerful thing in creation (potentially) none of this has any weight in the story anymore and its genuinely sad to see that aspect alone has been so disrespected and retconned.
