John Cale just released his new album ‘Mercy’ showing that, being aged 80 years old, he still is innovative and relevant. But what are the best solo albums he made? #johncale #paris1919 #avantgarde
I love his works and I'm obsessed with his two last albums, Mercy and Poptical Illusion, still experimenting and writing great songs. Greetings from Buenos Aires 👍🏻👋🏻
The best thing about Cale is he's so diverse anyone can have their own top 5 list that is totally legit. My picks at the moment would be Words For The Dying, Music For The New Society, Sabotage/Live, HoboSapiens and Paris 1919, in no particular order. And Dying on the Vine (version from Artificial Intellingence) was his first solo track I heard and it's hands down one of the best and impactful songs ever written.
I think I like your musical taste. Have you noticed the similarty with Fear and Nicos Marble Index in cover style? John Cale should release a rarity album greetings from Stockholm......
Thank U for sharing my Love of JC. First SF concert I saw at 15 was 5 piece VU at Avalon. Saw them there twice! I'll never forget. Also saw Blondie open for him in my home town Palo Alto [🪄Helen of Troy tour]. I have a number of incredible memories 🪄
Very unexpected to find my favourite Cale album at the top of your list. Generally, it's very overlooked, for some strange reason. (And I had no idea it was released on vinyl as well!) It's a staggering album.
Paris 1919 is one of my favourites there's so many pretty songs on that record especially Child's Christmas in Wales. Fear and Slow Dazzle are my other favourites and Sabotage is a good live album. Thanks for your review John Cale is a pure genius! I love him he's so unique and versatile and he can do anything!
Good video, saw him live late last year in York UK, I felt like I was watching a master at work. Great memories! The live version of ‘Mercy’ was beautiful and I really hope we get more from John despite Father Time creeping up. And the new album…well it took a while but the penny dropped, it’s fantastic..it grates..and MOONSTRUCK (Nico’s song) is a thing of beauty. I read someone describe his last few records as Muzak but I think that’s a lazy description, his albums like his live performances drag you in and pull you under..then spit you out the other side..they just need a bit of patience and that’s not a bad trait I’ve heard. Top 5 in no order.. Artificial Intelligence FEAR Helen Of Troy Hobosapiens Songs For Drella And I’ve already changed my mind whilst writing.
Thanks for your reply! I agree that Moonstruck is the best song on his new album. And I also saw him live on his current tour. Just a couple of weeks ago in Paradiso. It is incredible how good he is especially at 80. The show felt like a very special occasion.
@@top5records796 Ahh Paradiso? If I’m not mistaken is that the same Paradiso where my all time favourite live recording took place by Captain Beefheart and the Magic band? Amsterdam 80?
@@gedrooney9305 that has to be the same Paradiso! I never heard that live recording though and I love Captain Beefheart! Do you know where I can find it?
No, this is the right order: 1. Helen of Troy 2. Mercy (could leap to number 1 - sorry but 50 years after his biggest albums, this knocks most of them out of the park) 3. Caribbean Sunset 4. Artificial Intelligence 5. Slow Dazzle Yes I know Fear and Vintage Violence are great but you said 5, so... now I understand why he has a different setlist in every country he plays in.
No, not Fragments Of A Rainy Season. He'd worn that live acoustic thing out by then and was going through the motions. It does include a version of 'Lie Still' which is superior to the studio version , but otherwise I saw him do this stuff better in 1983, and 1986. 'Sabotage' is his great live album.
Thanks for giving John Cale some love.....BUT I kind of disagree with your picks (I assume every Cale fan has a very different opinion). Yes to Paris 1919, it is a masterpiece, but not my favorite. I don't think Vintage Violence makes my top 5. The entire Island trilogy - Fear, Slow Dazzle, Helen of Troy are near perfect as far as I am concerned. If I had to pick a favorite from those, it would be Fear (but ask tomorrow and I change my mind). I think the more avant garde of John Cale's work is just okay (Academy / Church of Anthrax). Some of his late career works are pretty good too (Black Acetate / Hobosapiens). I have tried to like Fragments of Rainy Season, but honestly I just find it boring - John Cale for my Mom. Happy you pointed out his production work - he has had a hand in so many great records (Modern Lovers, Nico, Stooges, Patti Smith.....). In particular, his work on Nico's records (The End, Desertshore, Marble Index) is incredible....those records continue to grow on me and I think it is mostly because of Cale's production. Although I would pick different, I have no complaints about gushing over John Cale. Thanks again.
@@top5records796 oK - I understand what you mean ! But "" The Rainy Season "' in not a good start as a live album ! Better - - ""Sabotage "" !!! friendly greetings
@@malegrissusran8847 I love Sabotage, I think it’s an awesome live album of John Cale. But… I think Fragments of a Rainy Season belongs in the list of best live albums ever. I think the setlist (the diversity in songs) and the way John Cale translates difficult songs into single man performances makes this one of the best live albums ever. These songs are emotionally strong and brilliantly articulated. He shows himself to be one of the most dynamic performers in recorded history. I will also include it in one of my ‘90s Top 5 videos…

Saw him perform live in Antwerp, Belgium last night.
Was blown away. It was a privilege to be there.
I saw him Wednesday in Paradiso, Amsterdam. He is indeed on fire this tour!
I place Mercy number one for the simple fact that it's now and I have had the opportunity to appreciate it now for all its worth.
Mercy is indeed an awesome album!

Dying on the vine is really quite something.
I saw John Cale in concert in 1985, and lucky enough to meet him after the show. One of my all-time favourite artists.
I think I like your musical taste.

Thank you! There are indeed similarities! As a matter of fact I love the Nico/Cale collaborations!

That sounds amazing! Palo Alto also has a very good live record by Thelonious Monk!
Also 1 by Mose Allison

I completely agree, I do not understand why it is so often overlooked.

I agree with you, John Cale has the kind of career for which any preferences are very personal. There are no ‘obvious’ bests.
"John Cale for my Mom" - what a lovely sexist comment. so mums are boring and dads are what? exciting?
