I know these are horror stories and these are definitely horrific, but now "Linda and Tina accidentally join a pyramid scheme" is a Bob's Burgers episode that I _absolutely_ want to see. The whole first story I could hear them going like

"Linda, you already are a small business owner"

I love that the writer used Bob's Burger's character names 😄 There are already at least two Bob's Burgers episodes that hint at MLMs! One is Gretchen in an adult product company (Linda hosts a party for her and then starts helping her sell), the other is Gayle trying to prevent Linda from joining an oil company after Gayle wasn't able to sell any oils from her own starter kit.

The fact that Mary spread lies about this child is just plain abuse imho. There's no excuse for that. An adult trying to intentionally make everyone hate a child is horrible, and it lead to her being ostracized, as Mary was a person who held a lot of power - the owner of the barn and benefactor to these teenagers.

Sounds like a narcissist, either people are good (and by extension they are good bc the people in their lives are a reflection of themselves) or bad and the enemy, so OP falls for the scam and by extension it makes her look stupid.

    • @SingingCrowie
      @SingingCrowie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@Sarakatbee we shouldn't really try to diagnose someone in the comments, but her story sounds to me more like she could have BPD. She did so much for her, but she did her wrong and so Mary flipped a switch and now she hates her guts. If course it is nit an excuse for harassing a child, but mental healtg care still has a ways to go, that woman clearly had untreated issues and needed therapy.

@@Sarakatbee yeah, people with such disorders are less likely to seek help or consider something is wrong. And 10 years ago it was even less accessible and the stigma was even worse, plus we know women tend to be dismissed more often and the majority of research is done on men. As much as appalling the story was i still have a tiny shred of empathy for Mary as she seemed pretty miserable. At least she wasn't the OPs actual family!

Mary (from the horse story) has all the hallmarks of a grandiose narcissist-- being overly generous, super complimentary, throwing money around to impress others, but then turning on them viciously at a perceived slight. I lived with this in a family member for years, it's very hard to deal with.
For narcissists, any little thing that they think undermines their *shiny reputation* leads to rage, resentment and sometimes acts of revenge.

Story 1, Bonus: it’s hilarious to me when someone tries to say “you can’t be allergic to this, because it doesn’t contain anything *I* think of as an allergen.”
My husband is allergic to avocado, lychees, and underripe bananas. My sister is allergic to apples, and a friend of mine is allergic to pears and breaks out when she touches grass. I'm also Canadian and got my first job the day after I turned 14.
Almost everyone I know who began working at that age were for local/small shops where you were treated well (not paid well necessarily, but where your limitations, school needs, and age were clearly understood).
I'm honestly shocked that door to door sales didn't require you being 18 (like being a server) and in 2018 Ontario (not sure about other provinces) banned door to door sales, which is smart because its potentially dangerous for everyone involved...

I’m in Québec and, technically, there’s no minimum working age. Kids are allowed to work a maximum number of hours as long as it doesn’t interfere with school. It wasn’t an issue before because young kids rarely worked and many were occasionally babysitting or do little menial jobs during summer such as mowing grass in the neighborhood.
Because of the severe labor shortage, we’re seeing more and more kids working at places such as groceries and stores. I suspect that the labor law will probably be modified in order to have a clear definition for minimum work age.

That horse story broke my heart, it's like the lady couldn't understand that the girl made an honest mistake and was willing to make it right. Glad there was a happy ending, but that lady really irked me, mental problems aside, this girl tried everything to make amends, couldn't she see that?
The other story with the immigrant father boiled me because libraries are my sanctuary and that hun desecrated and should be forever banned from libraries. You don't prey on the vulnerable, she obviously couldn't see that she was making him uncomfortable. I feel for those who come here looking for a better life and are still learning the language to be accosted and don't want to offend by saying no or leave me alone. Glad the daughter was able to step in and tell the hun to go away. That hun was despicable.
Missed you last week, but glad to see you back. 😊💕💕💕

The immigrant exploitation story shines a light on a very real issue that isn't limited to MLM recruitment.
Particularly for people who have been in the States "long enough to know English", there can be a lot of insecurity that comes with revealing their difficulty with the language - and if you don't have grown children who can translate and think critically on your behalf, your vulnerability is especially severe.
My boyfriend's father still struggles with understanding English when it is spoken too quickly or without proper enunciation, so he relies on his bilingual adult son to fill the gaps. When they aren't together, however, his insecurity gets the better of him and he resorts to saying "yes". TO EVERYTHING.
I can't tell you how many hours my boyfriend has spent on hold with customer service working his way up to a manager who will comply when he tells them their representative took advantage of his father and they had better process that refund and cancel that contract immediately. 😬
Thank you for featuring that story. 💖

The last few weeks especially I have noticed mlm scammers replying to all the comments trying to push their mlms on vulnerable people really struggling with mental health. One kept telling me that if I sorted out my gut health and got a liver detox(which is exactly what the liver does anyway for your body naturally!) and a blood detox all my ocd and ptsd would be cured!! Omg. That cutco story was devastating. What an awful woman to treat a child and helpless horse like that. Had the OP been a little older, she might have been better equipped to make sure her poor horse had a soft landing after leaving her, or at least put him down so he would avoid being put on the meat truck. But, she was a child! That woman was worse than cutco, in my opinion.

    • @Gabrieliuka
      @Gabrieliuka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

That woman IS worse than cutco because her issue with the girl was made up: she likes the knives, the girl didn't lie or scam her out of any money she didn't happily spend, and the girl offered to correct any issue the woman perceived, even offering money out of her own pocket. The woman looked for drama and created it, causing a child a whole lot of unnecessary heartache. While still happily using the knives years later. An absolute gaping sore of a human.

I literally just went to TJ Maxx and was able to get a very good and very sharp knife set for $25. Keep in mind he makes a lot of money so $3,500 to him is nothing, but to me it just shows his ignorance. When I saw the headline “Preying on Immigrants”, I said finally someone wrote about what I’ve seen for years in my community. My experience is slightly different but around the same lines of selling the American dream to people. A few of my extended family members have limited, if any formal education, are monolingual, and undocumented. And somehow companies like Amway have still made their way into their lives. They are deep in and they don’t see what we know because all they see is an opportunity to better themselves and their families. They already work “regular” jobs that pay the minimum wage and due to an array of reasons they are limited to any other form of advancement. What makes me sad is that from what I have seen they spend ANY time off and resources dedicated to the business. And we are talking about people who already live below poverty. It’s incredibly frustrating companies like these still exist…

Mary was really weird. Tbh. All of that was way, way too generous. Incredibly weird.
OP's parents should have stepped in. Horses can live for an incredible amount of time and the costs can skyrocket with any injury, so no child and later college student would be able to afford that without help.
They should have said, 'no', when they realized that without the free barn and lessons, the horse would have to be sold. Of course, to me it seems Mary was hoping for exactly that and trying to make these responsible parents seem awful and drive a wedge between them and their girls. The ones, who accepted, had to stay in her good graces from that moment onward. It is very creepy, if you think about it.
I'm saying it now: I think she was trying to play the long game and grow her downline.
She was getting them used to MLMs and such, encouraging them heavily to get started on that and punishing them, if they no longer supported MLM.
I wouldn't be surprised, if she had planned to start her own MLM at some point with the girls as her first super-loyal, almost cultish followers.

I saw a video on Medcircle about Histrionic disorder and they explained how people with this disorder or traits of this disorder are so susceptible to being recruited by mlms. The traits were so scarily accurate when you look at top ranking mlm huns and various ones below them. The manipulative, impulsive, overexcitable, overdramatic, self-centredness, difficultly maintaining relationships, gullibility, attention seeking but ultimately very rapid changes of emotion and between these traits because everything they feel and think is very, very superficial. This is also why they are so okay with recruiting others to make money for themselves as they have low empathy and concern for others. I’m definitely going to look more into this as it was really interesting and explained a lot. Most people can’t imagine taking advantage of other people this way and now I know this is one reason why.

My very favorite was an instagram reel where an oily hun basically insinuated that we had given our kids cancer by using sunscreen and she would send out complimentary oil kits to help relieve suffering. The oily Huns really come out in force in September for childhood cancer awareness month.

I'm on disability. I have medical and mental health issues. Oily Huns have approached me several times. I've made them aware that I can't afford it. Most of them realize I'm telling the truth and they won't make a sale. However one of my friend's mother said I know you can ask your mother for money. She'll want to buy these oils for your health. I said No. I'm not taking money from my mother. I pay a low amount for rent and utilities. I'm not going to take advantage of her any further. Anyway, she wouldn't accept the word No. Well that's the only answer she was going to get. It made every time I went to her mother's house miserable for all involved. I used to go to her mother's house for dinner every Sunday. I've not gone in about six months. My friend understands and she's embarrassed about her mother's behavior. But her mother still tries to sell me on Facebook. It makes me so angry. Luckily my mother isn't close with this woman and doesn't use Facebook. I'm sure the Hun would try and pitch her.

The Last story reminded me of a visit to my hematologist. After a patient's visit one of his secretaries would prey on a patient with Doterra Essential oils. Well I guess she wasn't allowed to bc the Dr was infuriated when he caught her selling an oil and fired her on the spot after yelling at her. I also had an acupuncturist who would try to pitch young living products and swore their frankincense had cured her friend's glaucoma and I should try it and put two drops in the palm of my hand. I wiped my hands off on the sheet and told her EO's are not FDA regulated and as a massage therapist I don't use them for that reason. I walked out paid for the session never to return.
I'm a massage therapist & when a client asks to use a EO I explain to them how back in the 1940s - 1980s cigarettes were promoted to be healthy although there was no science to back up that claim & 80 yrs later we know the truth. Until I learn the proven truth of an EO I won't use or promote them therapuetically as it is my responsibility to do no harm.

I was never pitched to. When I moved I did downsize and let go a few pieces. I still wear the rest. However, I have not purchased anything new in years.

In the mid '00s I was taking a break from college and was looking for a job on Craigslist (it was the big thing then). I went for a group interview for a Sales job and it ended up being a MLM (I don't remember which, but probably Vector ). I was falling for most of it until they said we had to go door to door. So I put up my hand and said the add said it would be a call center type job. They said they did have a call center, but it was in another state, and if we did well we could look to transfer to it. I expressed concern as I don't drive for medical reasons, so wouldn't be able to go door to door, the lady was then dismissive like oh this won't work for you then, sorry and asked me to leave, kicking me out to wait in the rain for the bus home for 30+ min. I was sad, but talking to my brother about it after he said it sounded like a scam so probably a good thing it didn't work.

I have the opposite of the sad garden dad story: I used to have a plot in a community garden in the Pacific Northwest, and one of the neighboring gardeners was an older man from Jordan. He was very friendly, and was excited to practice his english. The only downside is I have some auditory processing issues, and I have extra trouble keeping up with conversations. I tried explaining that, and google translate was definitely not much help. We gave up, and mostly chatted about how our gardens were doing. Anyway, he was nice, and always insisted on offering me and anyone younger than 40 a piece of hard candy.

Story 2 hits me hard. at 18 I made a dream come true and purchased a horse. sadly my health quickly turned due to undiagnosed chronic illnesses. I tried working off my board at the barn but was unable to put in the necessary hours and ultimately was served with papers giving me 30 day to pay off the debt or my horse would be sold at auction. As a retired standardbred race horse his prospects were slim. I was ultimately and thankfully able to find a buyer that would pay what I needed to pay off the barn and he left for a new home. It still breaks my heart to this day that I had to lose him but am glad he had a happier ending than I feared.

Hi Hanna. I have watched every video on your channel so I consider myself well-versed in MLM’s (great education). However I still “fell” for it (gave her my email). It happened at the dog park. This woman told me that my dog “looks like he’s not getting proper nutrients from his food”. My dog is my life. (He eats Acana Brand food and gets 3+ hours of exercise daily). Anyways, she was telling me about these “supplements” for dogs and of course I was interested (I want the best for my dog). She talked for almost an hour and in the end I gave her my email address. I took my dog to the vet to make sure he’s okay because I actually believed what she said. My vet told me that it’s a pitch for an MLM and she’s seeing more and more of these cases. Specifically it’s preying on people who don’t have enough money to take their dogs to the vet for a check up and believe their BS. She didn’t charge me and Jake got a treat out of it so no harm done. Apparently this woman goes to different dog parks to make her pitch. When I got home from the vet I received an email from Savvy Fox. I had no idea that there were Dog Food MLMs!!! Anyways, I was so mad
that I made posters BEWARE OF MLM HUN (with pyramids in the background) and took them to different dogs parks. I posted them everywhere. Shame on her. She is exploiting the love people have for their dogs. Can you please make a video where you discuss these pet MLM’s? Knowledge is power.
