The whole wearing a button that says "ask me how" brings back so many uncomfortable memories. 😅 I'm an introvert. My first job at a pizza shop we all had to wear buttons that said "ask me about our delicious soups!" or "ask me about our homemade dough!" It was my worst nightmare 😂

Origami Owl had an "owlette" program to get kids as young as 11 to sell their products. They had to have a parent or guardian enrolled with them, but it still felt a bit slimy to me.

My dad is super anti-social and awkward, so he wouldn't do well with sales even with legit products. And what happens when you have stockpiles of poorly sealed food in a filthy garage? Rats! I had a similar experience. Straight out of college while still looking for a job in my major, which I have now, I was working retail. An MLM hun came up to me as I was setting up the new pricing signs on the shelves for the sale starting the next day so women just comes up in to me. She didn't even introduce herself or anything just took one look at my cheeks, which have dark spots I'm self conscious about, and rudely said "I've got a cream to fix your face let me tell you about it." The hoarding story makes me so sad. & I'm a psychology major with a BA, I've found that most Hoarders have significant TRAUMA they need help with. My mom lost a baby before me, my dad has a TBI... I can't imagine those buttons working very well. If I'm on vacation, especially somewhere as expensive as Disney, the last things I'd want to chat about would be "business opportunities" or "weight loss."
With the story about the Scentsy hun taking advantage of her mother, the other daughter might want to see if adult protective services might be able to help. I don't know if that's something they have access to or if it falls under their umbrella, but hoarding is a mental illness and it's being exploited, so hopefully they can help.

It's really ironic that they use the word "retire". The nasty surprise that they will get at retirement age is that if you don't put money INTO Social Security, you'll get ZERO Social Security at retirement. I was in MLMs for decades, but it was always just a hobby and I refused to quit my corporate jobs. I have a friend who is almost 70 and she gets NOTHING from Social Security, even though she worked real jobs, but not for long enough. She gets none of the money she put into it because she wanted time and financial freedom. I'm almost 70 and I could live on the Social Security I get, but I CHOOSE to work, but only about 80 hours a month, just to get out of the house and it always leads to an increase in my benefits. There is no freedom in having to work past retirement age. I know a couple where her Scentsy business has been very successful, so she retired her husband. He was in law enforcement, but he's only 35, so he probably won't see a dime of his Social Security. So sad.

Plus another Christmas party a company had where the employees were notified that if security was called on them, they would be fired. MLM retirement…I was a nanny for a wealthy family that was high in ranking to a major mlm. Due to their ranking they went to training seminars out of town 2-3 times per month (usually a th-m) I had charge over a 9,7,4, and 4 mo old children. I did EVERYTHING. Drove the mom suburban to Karate, gymnastics, dance, church group, carpool, etc. I also helped with homework, chores, all meals. I was basically a mom of 4 that had to get up in the middle of the night with the baby and still get up and get everyone fed and ready for school at 7:30.
Here’s the thing that never sat well with me: their company sells the idea that you can “retire” and have more freedom with your time so you can spend it with your family. I was spending ALOT of time with their kids while they were still working So I couldn’t grasp that concept they were selling. I loved the kids and the job was fulfilling. It actually gave me great experience to be a mom. I remember thinking my first baby was easy after being a “mom” to 4 kids.

Oh god I remembered my brother got into a feminine product MLM years ago, but it was short lived. I was suffering through undiagnosed endometriosis, so I bled through everything. He tried to sell me on the absorbency without the dangerous fillers or whatever. But the price was way too steep for someone who needed more than normal to get through a day. But mainly the training and customer service rules these places are obsessed with and will make you stand and listen no matter what. It will be considered ‘rude’ to walk away and could destroy their magical experience. And BOOM you are fired 😂

The reason these companies officially wait until you are 18 is because in most states in the US, contracts with those 17 and younger are voidable, as people under 18 are not considered capable of entering into a contract. They might sign up and do well, but they could not be bound to any of the terms if they just wanted to walk away, so the risk is too high to the upline.

The scentsy rep selling to her mother and refusing to listen was so frustrating. When my stepmom was sick with AML, my brothers and I would go by the house and check in on stuff (despite living 5 hours away & having to struggle for the time to go up - her natural kids all lived very close). My stepbrother was big in MLMs, and her house was full of massive stocks of odd brand cleaning products. re college vs Mlms. Totally agree that mlms are a bad option. however (and not in US context) going to Uni for the sake of getting a degree is not the only option. vocational training is as valuable as the academic studies. My dad worked as a careers advisor at high schools and was keen to affirm the non academic as equally valid options. In Uk there has been a push to increase the number of people in university courses, as if everyone is suited to this or that the academic route is better than vocational training. My dad was always keen to point out that when you have a leak you are not bothered about who has a degree, only if if they know what they are doing to fix your leak.
