It is better with a single character in normal and to profession swap. Taking tailor and enchanted to get bags early on and make a wand, but the limits you are using are too tough. Grey and white is an early death sentence. Then once you have some bags and a wand you do the switch to alchemist/herb if thats your goal. Herbing/Skinning to gather herbs up and make some silver sellling off animal skins can also be a viable step then dropping the skinning for the alchemy when you have a bag full of herbs to work with, using the skins to pay for the bottles and training you will need for alchemy. Everything in wow is about scaling and that gear doesn't scale.
