One of the many roadblocks to dollarization facing Milei, as explained to me recently, seems to be as follows: Until now, Argentine government made money off currency transactions forced at artificial foreign currency rates set by government. Furthermore, previous administrations borrowed against the future revenue stream of such future foreign exchanges (ie they mortgaged future revenues)’. On top of that, Argentine banks were forced to carry this debt and would go under if unpaid. This in turn could create a crisis in Argentina similar to the 2008 Lehman Brothers crisis in the US. ….or worse. Milei must find a solution to this ticking time bomb before he can dollarize the economy. I would guess some of the reforms he is pushing are meant to prepare the way to address this problem. If any of you have a better understanding, please explain.
The people who would lose money by immediate dollarization are the ones who have been looting the Argentine people for years. Too bad for them, but they earned it.
Yeah I know the solution: create a free market economy in which Argentenians can both buy and sell to any country whatever they want. It's really not that crazy of a solution. Surely there's _something_ that Argentina can export.

Argentineans currently hold above 300 billion US dollars. That is not the problem. The problem is that President Milei started his administration with a Central Bank holding zero foreing exchange reserves and tremendous debt in pesos and dollars, at home and abroad; and a federal government in rampant deficit. So the country was in the brink of hyperinflation and debt default. But now inflation and default fears are slowly, but steadily, abating. Anyway there are good news. Dollarization is already underway; albeit in silent fashion. Our finance Minister and the Central Bank President are currently swaping pesos, and peso denominated debt, for USD denominated bonds. At the same time the Central Bank is increasing USD reserves, day by day. We expect that by the time of the next harvest (due in March-April) Argentina's Central Bank will have greatly reduced peso liabilities and will posess plenty of USD dollars at disposal to declare a formal dollarization, without fearing a run on the banks. We are hopeful that by the end of this year Argentina will have dumped the peso for ever. Long live the Argentine Republic! Long live Freedom! Damnit!

its true what you say removing regulation is probably the best way but Lowering taxes can often lead to economic growth wich in turn leads to the goverment reciving more in taxes
He is a smart economist so I trust he is making the right choices. I'd dollarize right away and announce a tax reduction based on the amount of budget that is reduced. This way investors have something to look forward to, and the citizens are motivated to support slashing the budgets of many bloated Government institutions. It's a great way to gain support AND start getting the benefits of investors who are looking ahead. Plus, he doesn't HAVE to reduce taxes if for some reason they can't reduce the budget to a specific target, and it would be okay because he announced as such. Also, it allows for a gradual tax reduction based on progress so even if they can't get to the target they can still get closer and give people the sense of progress.

Mr. Forbes made excellent remarks on Argentinian economy and current difficult realities. Since I live in Bulgaria, where with the help of Mr. Steve Hanke, we were able to stop the hyperinflation more than 25 years ago, I may have some valuable advises: No need to remove the peso, you can instead introduce a monetary board, where you fix the exchange rate of the peso to a stable currency. Of course, that may require to denominate the current peso to a new peso (which has higher value) and tie the new peso to a stable foreign currency. I would advise against using the USD, since the US economy itself is in a very difficult situation, but of course it is up to you. Wish all the best to Argentina! I hope you make it through these difficult times.
Big salute to all the argentinian brothers, home of the best steak in the world and also most beautiful woman. Keep going and make Argentina great again! Regards from Argentina.
Forbes, how the heck do you have the gall to advocate for Argentina to dump their currency and replace it with the currency of a country whose central bank is pursuing the same idiotic monetary policies that led to hyperinflation in Argentina?
What will happen to all those Argentenians who have been hiding their wealth in dollars for years? The Argentine peso is garbage, there's still some time for him to 'oil the machine' and get some liquidity before opening up other ways to store and exchange wealth. The US Gov't. hasn't resorted to outright stealing property from its citizens (yet).
Agree. Us debt at time of writing more likely to hit $35 trillion than zero, like Argentina has done. So a bit of humility, please Mr Forbes. Javier Milei is an economist, not a sycophant. Take your hat off, and go ask Milei for help with the US economy ... then we'll be getting somewhere.

Dollarisatìn of their economy means the dollar will loose value at the expense of the usa. During the elections he announced he wants to legalise organ selling. He wants to get rid of the central bank. This would mean he does not want to pay back the imf loan. His election campaign was full of contradictions like these. That one would lead to being anti West and turning towards china. If they do not pay back the loan consisting of one third of all loans imf has in the world, then the whole west falls in economic despair. We the hard working tax payers, lend it to Argentina in the time when money had value. That was the money meant for the old age care of all our elderly. The dollarisation will not work in the end as it leads to them not being able to keep up with the west as the same local crooks are still in place hampering their economy. They can not afford to dollarize, milei will then be austed and Argentina will go full left again. What a disaster of a country. Driven behind the scenes by national socialists and ready to explode with milei as the spark on the fuse.
I agree with the message, but with the greatest of respect to Mr Forbes whose done a great job running his Grandfathers company, I think he over-estimates his importance both to Argentina and Internationally. I'm sure President Milei, an economist by profession among his many skills, will keep an open ear and mind to the many - many - messages of advise from the Globalist elites that have aided Argentina through it's many difficult decades following Peron. My own humble advise to Mr Milei is: Watch your back.
Yep, US can't even pay the interest on the debt at this point. It's a ponzi scheme. The powers that really run the US know that after the coming civil war the US will no longer be a country. It'll be here within 5-15 years. 25% of Americans want to secede and another 25% are on the fence about it and those numbers are growing.

Sorry Forbes, you are wrong. Argentina needs to go a gold backed currency like Russia, and America previously. Fiat currencies always fail and reliance on the fiat American dollar is lunacy.

Crises like that are more like big market corrections. It's impossible to fix things without letting the correction happen.
The argentina is filled with time bombs, and he knows exactly what to do.

Argentina just noted first budget surplus since 2012.
'Prosperity doesn't cause inflation. Reducing the value of your currency does.'
We are hopeful that by the end of this year Argentina will have dumped the peso for ever.

its true what you say removing regulation is probably the best way but Lowering taxes can often lead to economic growth wich in turn leads to the goverment reciving more in taxes

Since I live in Bulgaria, where with the help of Mr. Steve Hanke, we were able to stop the hyperinflation more than 25 years ago, I may have some valuable advises:
No need to remove the peso, you can instead introduce a monetary board, where you fix the exchange rate of the peso to a stable currency.
Of course, that may require to denominate the current peso to a new peso (which has higher value) and tie the new peso to a stable foreign currency.
I would advise against using the USD, since the US economy itself is in a very difficult situation, but of course it is up to you.

The US Gov't. hasn't resorted to outright stealing property from its citizens (yet).

dollarization is still a MUST!!! if you want to allure foreign investment and to provide some sort of a warranty that your money will not lost value.... dollarization is a key issue to create employment in the private economy
It gives me great hope to see the path being laid by Milei, I can only hope my government here in the UK follow in his footsteps
Now if the US government could just stop spending itself toward hyper inflation.

@@zonezs "Free Market ideals are the best", I guess this would suffice as an adequate correction. That said I always choose freedom of the people over any institution. A free market lends itself to prosperity, the Governments role is to maintain the health of the free market. If an issue arises that threatens the free market, than the Government should step in and attempt to correct it. For instance a polluting facility or an aggressive monopoly that is hindering competition through nefarious means or business activity.
Contrary to popular belief, some monopolies are totally accepted. It's only when they stifle the competition through influence in Government or other means that it becomes an issue. For instance Steam is basically a monopoly, but they have great business practices and don't use their dominance in the market to negatively impact consumers or potential competition.
