    Well cared for mules ....... they have beautiful coats ...... no ribs showing ....... their ears are forward while delivering the goods = they are not upset ......... their saddle pads are thick = protecting their backs ...... their gate is strong ....... legs / hips / hooves look good ...... 💚 from a horse woman in Virginia

      You can see how well cared for they are. When they paused on the stairs for a snack their owner/caretaker waited for them.

    When you reached out to stroke the mule’s face he was completely relaxed and unthreatened. If those mules were treated badly they would be “head shy”, meaning they would toss their head and flinch away from the contact. They look like contented well cared for working animals and watching them work together as a mule train was brilliant. Thank you for this lovely content.

      The mules are probably numb from doing this every day, and scared of backlash from the owner. It’s sad to see.

    I love how they were not rushed and look well looked after. You don’t need to apologise (I’ve been vegan snd veggie, as long as they are well looked after, not an issue). We work heavy horses in woodland moving tree trunks, and even riding horses are working animals. It’s all about their welfare and care 💕

    Why are you apologising? Since the dawn of humanity animals have been used to transport people and goods - dogs, camels, horses, mules, donkeys, oxen, yaks, reindeer, water buffalo, elephants etc. It's a necessary part of life. As long as they are well fed, well cared for and not maltreated or brutalised, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using them as a means of transportation. PLEASE don't apologise.

    • @ChoochooseU
      @ChoochooseU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ☝️ I agree and like I posted in my comment: many work animals are part of families and much like adults, have jobs that help the family unit.
      They live good lives and are cared for better than many populations of peoples.

    • @traciannveno
      @traciannveno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree too. When treated well it helps the animal also. They need some working out to stay healthy.
      Its even good to make dogs wear a pack with their own water and a few things while you walk to keep their muscle tone up and train them.
      To tell you the truth, I wish I Could ride a donkey to the grocery store and have him haul back my groceries instead of me taking the bus and carrying them home haha

    The Mules are an historic part of Mediterranean life, prominent in Greece and Italy in mountainous coastal regions, going back thousands of years. The Mules that delivered your pellets appear well cared for, securely harnessed to spread the load and well nutriated
    ( from your garden, not least) and after all they have been specifically
    bred with this purpose mind, as they are ideally suited to narrow paths and the rocky, sloped terrain of the region, nevertheless your sensitivity and care to their well-being speaks highly of your evidently kind heart and I do hope others appreciate your obvious concern and thoughtfulness.

There is no road, it's all sand and bricks. I always felt bad for the animals, but when I got older I understand that's how they're living.

    God bless you Nicki, condolences for your loss. Where I live in the Kenyan tea highlands we use donkeys to ferry water, firewood, charcoal, and so much more. Our culture considers them sacred animals, and anyone who hurts a donkey is liable to prosecution and the "curse" of the elders. As long as they're taken care of well, there is no problem. Animals help a great deal in rural areas.

    Well...you do live in pasta land (example...lunch), it makes sense everyone gets a robust workout, Nicki, mules, drovers, Nicola, Luca and Sky. I grew up on a farm and we produced food for humans, can you imagine the level of hunger if humans never used beasts of burden. We loved our animals and gave them better medical care than we did ourselves. They were content, well feed, well housed and well looked after animals who had a lot of free time to roam and graze and take lazy naps. We lived in harmony as we took care of them and they took care of us. So sorry you had to justify this to the extent that you did. Love to all.

    In all the small mountain towns in Italy like my parents town in Lazio, years ago they had to use donkeys and mules. I rode and walked with them, they are fantastic animals. They were taken care of especially well like people do today with cars. They were nesessary to do a lot of tasks that tractors and trucks do today. But even today as in Nicki's case, only mules and donkeys can get to certain areas. There is no reason for Nicki to excuse their use, like dog sleds in Alaska, and many other examples.
    I wish I was there, going back to my roots as a mountain farmer and managing olive groves.

    Aw, they look like they are very well taken care of and they are very sweet animals. I understand why some people will be upset though. But animals are sometimes used for work, that's how it is. Horses and oxen are still used in agricultural fields. Police departments have K9 officers and people have support animals or seeing-eye dogs. It's how they're treated and cared for that matters most. These mules look healthy and honestly, 60 kgs isn't a heavy load for a mule, so they're not being overworked. They took their time, stopped for snacks, they're fiiiiiiine.

    Thank you Nikki for sharing a very necessary way of life to assist with getting difficult and heavy loads down to your home, so that your able to have some form of heating to your home. I understand what you meant about the wintertime and living up a mountainside which is open to all the elements. I didn’t feel bad about the donkeys working they are part of a essential team that’s able to get the job done. Sometimes animals are needed due to the area and physical loads. They were very relaxed and enjoying the snacks 🥬 of the garden along the way. Happy and well looked after animals. If I had to manage all of those 500 stairs up and down a mountain every day with groceries etc. I don’t know how I would do....It’s not a easy lifestyle due to the location but that view is so worth it.
    Nikki you show us your sincerity and honesty. You love the animals, but don’t feel bad those donkeys are loved and rewarded for their efforts with someone to look after them. You and your family are a pleasure to watch. I enjoy all of your vlogs about your home life and the🪴 gardens. My condolences to You, Carlos, Sky and the rest of the family at this sad and difficult time.
