I think Samsung had a patent for a docking station with a keyboard, battery, and screen, where the phone was the internals. This was like 8 years ago already. I don't think they ever acted on it.
Check out Planet Computers (Cosmo Communicator, Astro Slide, Gemini PDA). Just be careful that it is a tiny tiny start-up and shopping with them comes with risks.
I would find that useful as a stand! And for texts that'd be nice, rather than picking up the phone, swipe typing on-screen, then putting it back down. Of course connecting the phone to a PC is an option via software and network is possible, but that method has its downsides compared to an independent keyboard/stand.
Do feel like this case was worth your money or would it be more practical to just use a separate Bluetooth key board? Also did it double battery life like you were thinking?
I haven't gotten a chance to really use it as an EDC phone, but for the $50 this costs I'd absolutely recommend getting one and trying it out if you're trying a PinePhone.
That looks a little too chunky both with and without the keyboard case for me to use as a daily, but I absolutely want one with the keyboard for a fun little mobile Linux system to toy with. Are you able to use the keyboard while holding it? Sort of like those slide keyboard phones which I really miss haha
It's the worst thing I every bought from them! Sometimes it doesn't work. It is charging extremely slowly. If you actually use it, it will discharge even when you plug it in because the charging speed between keyboard and phone is limited to 0.5A. If you leave your phone in the case , the phone is able to deep discharge the keyboard and brick it etc. etc ... They should just have made the keyboard without the battery. That would solve so many issues.
This is modern software under active development. They're working on a novel UI for mobile devices, and are of the school of thought that performance, configurability, and ease of development is drastically more important than aesthetics. After playing with it a bit, I don't think it's for me with the keyboard right now, but if I were going to EDC the PinePhone without the keyboard case I'd absolutely put in some more time with it.
@@NatTuck you can use the phone usb-c as long as you do not try to charge through it whilst in the keyboard case. so only not self powered accessories through the phones port whilst in keyboard dock
Hello, my english is not as best as i wished it to be... It seems that this keyboard is compatible with sxmo. Do you agree ? some modifications to be made ? Thanks for all.
The keyboard seems to work with sxmo, but the default bindings in sxmo aren't optimal for a hardware keyboard so it might be worth changing some of those.
No, I tried & the phone usb does not work for mouse when I tried. Does anyone know how to make a hyphen or "dash" on the pinephone attachable keyboard? I just got it and can't figure out how to make "-"
Or you could check.out the Planet Computers phones. If you dont need 5 g there's already a Cosmo Communicator on the market.. tje 5g Astroslide transformer is rolling out to backers at the moment but they have an early purchase available on their site. The keyboard on those are a mechanical.
I wasn't aware of those. They look potentially really neat, although I'd need to look into what level of support they have for open source drivers and baseband isolation.
My pinephone has been a mere dust collector for over a year now. The hardware is just way too cheap, crappy and slow. Even if the software would one day become mature, when you have to wait 30 seconds for your browser to open that's just not something you want to keep using.
I like phat phones and that's no lie..... 🙂 Thanx for making this video - just what I was looking for. p.s. This keyboard is probably the best screen protector ever made too.

Resolved. My solution was, contrary to the mounting instructions, to CLOSE the keyboard fully and then pry it open. There are no UNmounting instructions in the little manual that came with it, but thats how I did it. Worked pretty easily with that method.
I expect software to significantly improve the picture quality on the PinePhone, but none of this first generation of Linux phones is ever going to produce photos on par even with old mainstream smartphones.

Yea, the battery in the keyboard is heavy enough that it does work as a stand for something like watching a video.
How can I get this for myself? I need this, because I want to use a TTY.

I haven't come up with a good way to hold it to my head with the keyboard case on it. It might be headphones / speakerphone only for calls.
How heavy is that keyboard case ? Havent found it ot pine webpage.

Should work nicely with the other Linux Phone desktops: Phosh and Plasma Mobile.
is it any good with PureOS? can a super normie like me use it? given i have no idea how to use the command line tools?
Probably not your best choice if you aren't an early adopter developer.

Awkwardly.

As I understand it you can't use the on-phone USB-C port at all with this case, so any accessory goes into the keyboard's type-C port.

Yes... but it's kind of awkward to hold up to your head. It does need to be open, and my hands aren't really big enough.
@@NatTuck so guess it needs to be able to flip all the way around? So that the screen comes on the outside.. like open it up 360°?
That would help a lot. It currently doesn't do that.

Not really.

Standard.
I guess a pen for the use on the keyboard might not be a bad thing. One of those pens that also reacts with the screen.

Sadly, the pogo pins seem to be a concrete advantage for the PinePhone over the Librem 5.

No. This interfaces to the pinephone by replacing the normal phone back and connecting to a specific set of pogo pins.

Plenty of phones run Android, including some with hardware keyboards. Having an option other than Android is much more useful.
There's actually an Android ROM for it, but Bluetooth isn't working yet.
