Is anyone else just kinda fascinated by this performance? I can't help but keep coming back to it. This is awesome.
yes
I just discovered this last night. I was totally blown away.
You and me both, brother
it‘s addictive - which is a true tallica-trademark
Yep. Had to do a guitar cover of it! Stuck in my head!
Check out my cover 😊
We need another Garage Inc, they are killing it!
Fuck yes, I would LOVE that. Garage Inc. is awesome and disc 1 has phenomenal production.
Garage Inc. Revisited
I knew I recognized that guitar tone or tune from garage inc
Yeah, they played so many good covers since Garage Inc and some of them were recorded in studio, they can easily fill a double disc
This.
I'm pleased for James that he got to play in front of one of his idols. I think some people forget that Metallica didn't grow up listening to thrash metal. They're hard rockers who helped create a genre, perfected it, outgrew it, and have been doing whatever the hell they like ever since, because they can.
Yes indeed! Thats why Metallica is the most adult-wise metal band among the other. Their influence is so wide, zz top, iggy pop, lynyrd skynyrd, thin lizzy, budgie, and many more.
@@IswanjanaHariAdiI agree with you on that fully. I used to be one of so called “metal purists” in my teens and used to shit mercilessly on everything Metallica did after AJFA just because “it’s not metal enough” and because everyone did it. Now, ca. ten years later, Metallica is one of the few metal bands I still come back to, and I really enjoyed “Load”, “Reload” and three latest albums. I like their music, but I like their lyrics even more, in fact, James is one of my favourite lyricists in any genre. He has some sloppy lyrics here and there, but the majority of them are great and work great with the music. They are one of the few metal bands that cover themes like mental health and other personal issues, and do it really well, and I really appreciate them for it.
The thing I love about Metallica covers is that they somehow are ALWAYS able to make the song sound undeniably Metallica-like... and yet still keep the essence and feel of the original track with enormous respect to its author!
I hadn't heard the original before and checked it out on spotify - the drumming, the guitar work, enough of the original tempos and feel and then the 'tallica piece added in. With James divorce in the rearview, the lyrics seemed right at home for Pappa Hetfield.
This version is somehow distinctly an Elton John song and a Metallica song. That’s quite the feat.
Indeed, the Metallistamp was applied!
And astronomy cover are pretty sick as well back then
Didn’t realize how well suited this song was to be adapted by them, and it’s been one of my favourites since forever.
The dual harmonized guitar part in the intro definitely had the quintessential, old-school Metallica vibe à la Master of Puppets when James walked up beside Kirk to play it.
They also used the source material as an excuse to do things you normally would not hear from them either, one example being the high note vocal harmonies with the “Oooh’s” towards the end. Don’t think I’ve ever heard James sing that high before in my entire life, lol!
Amazing cover all around though. I think they fuckin’ killed it!🤘🏻
Turns out Elton and Bernie wrote a Metallica song 20 years before James!
10.
Hahahahaha same here 😂
Best comment on TH-cam.
Dream Theater saw the potential in this song decades ago.
A good songs is a good song and Flotsam & Jetsam coverd Saturdays nigh's allright for fighting on their first or second album..
Elton was fascinated. You can tell he felt proud of the way Metallica’s performance turned out.
Elton called in and praised Metallica for Nothing Else Matters when they and Miley Cyrus were ago on the Howard Stern Show a few years and James got very emotional. It was sweet.
James had tears in his eyes. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
And he's not even AMERICAN!
@billyc6678 did he??? Was it during the 2nd verse? I think now I remember his eyes looking a bit watery. Tears? Under the influence? Lol he seemed genuinely thrilled to be performing for Elton. Those kisses at the end 🤍
Yeah! He even said "amazing!" At the end!❤
You can really see how much love and care Metallica put into this arrangement and performance. As a Metallica fan of over 30 years, it warms my heart to see them enjoying themselves like this.
The same thought struck me throughout the performance. They kept it so true to the original while giving it their own flavor instead of doing a whole new interpretation of the song, which I think was completely appropriate for the occasion. I loved seeing the respect and admiration that the group had for Elton and vice versa. So cool!
I’m 71 years old and I love this!
I' m 67 and I agree!😊
This has got to be one of the greatest rock covers of all time.
Yup I would have to agree! Signed: Aaron T from TH-cam

Anybody else see James' teenager face come through like half a dozen times? Dude looked like a little kid. They SLAUGHTERED the living FUCK out of that song. Probably the best cover I've ever heard. 🤘🏻
No kidding man. It’s awesome to see that music still does this to him
@ali965 look at his face and those smiles during the 2nd chorus after he sings "with another man". That's Kill Em All James. Just 10 years after Goodbye Yellowbrick Road came out. Far out, man.
No probably about it brother, that fucken SHREDDED!!! They did look young in their eyes on that one...
Metallica's best cover, imo.... was the Mercyful Fate medley. A no brainer for me. Turn the Page, obviously a killer cover as well but that medley, the music and lyrics all played Metallica style, just awesome.
@bobabooey4537 yeah, I had forgotten about that one when I commented. I'm not familiar with the originals of the medley songs, but what they did sounds excellent. As far Metallica covers go, Mercyful Fate medley is best, and then probably this live performance tied with Turn the Page and Whiskey In The Jar. Difficult to choose.
Can we all agree we actually like the snare sound? Its perfect!
I think Lars is in the unusual position of having both the best and worst drum sound on a metal record (The Black album drums and snare especially are monstrous and then St Anger is the absolute opposite, which was the point but we all wish it hadn't been)
You can tell they rehearsed the shit out of this. What an amazing tribute.
Metallica quality. Work and rehearse.
The musicianship is off the charts. It sounds like they have been playing this for years.
Youre probably right, But at the same time, I wouldnt be surprised if they said "Lets just wing it".
That was probably the best performance by Metallica that I have personally watched/heard in 15 years. That was absolutely phenomenal. They are firing on all cylinders.
Pretty amazing for 60 year olds!
Reminds me of cheap trick - they've played together so Long they have amazing chemistry
It is amazing. It really helps when Lars has admitted to practicing regularly since Covid.
@@billsutherland3935John Paul Jones is almost 80, but still a great musician. ( see his video live..amazing) .
@@marcok.6734 sure, but the physicality of their music can’t be compared.
James can still sing like its the 90s, still got that youthful punch in his voice.
He sounds so good it almost makes me wonder if it's lip synced
@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams
He’s definitely live.
@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams If you watch them live they make mistakes all the time and are not ashamed of making them.
Time to get those ears checked.
James has said he doesn't full send his vocal chords live unless it's a special occasion. He saves his voice for moments like this, to avoid blowing his voice again like he did in the 90s. People say his voice is "autotuned" or whatever tf on Hardwired and 72 Seasons, but no he just was able to let rip in the studio.
Props to Metallica for honoring Elton and Bernie. Props to the sound engineer for honoring Metallica.
I was Dee Murray's wife and I stood by the side of the stage so many times whilst they were opening the show with this song. OMG ! This gave me the chills and made my hair stand on end. This was so brilliant . I almost cried. It blew my socks off ! My hat is off to Metallica.
Your husband was an amazing musician. I bet you had some great times together! ✌🏻
I was just thinking that the pace of the song was just like the recordings of the 73/74 band then your comment popped up.❤
Your husband was amazing! A gift to us all and a musician's musician. Metallica's version definitely made the hairs on my arms stand up
@@canyoncruzr Thank you ! Yes, we did ! 😊
@@krispykremekiller Thank you ! Yes, me too ! It was brilliant !
Elton John - "Amazing!"
Me - "Who am I to argue with the man himself? It was amazing!"
I think Elton and Bernie were pretty blown away and proud of this performance.
I love metallica version on this one love lie bleeding this songs rock hard way to go metallica
The best part was seeing how much Elton and Bernie liked it.
Growing up, my dad was a big Elton John fan. I've followed Metallica since the begining and never thought in a million years that they'd do an Elton cover with Elton in the front row.
Of all the artists that performed that night, Metallica stole the show.
I agree. I watched the slow. No one touched Metallica.
I didn't have Metallica covering an Elton John track on my 2024 bingo card...but damn is it ever a stunningly beautiful surprise!
This. Most unexpected cover.
Neither did I, but it's cool.
The buildup to the solo is phenomenal.
Whole arrangement is brillant.
Just hearing someone else playing Davey Johnstone's solo is awesome. I always felt the guitar on the original is such an underrated performance because it's backing someone like Elton
Masterfully crafted just like every Metallica song/cover that exists.
Have to be one of best live rock performances of 2024. Phenomenal..
I got chills when Metallica came on….their cover song and the intro was wild!
Lars the Drummer and that photo coverage was very good!
I was banging the table and my cats were laughing Ha!
I agree!
This band is at its absolute peak in terms of maturity and talent. They’re absolutely brilliant playing together.
How the hell are they doing so great covers again and again? Just killing as always
I’ve been listening to Garage Inc. recently. They truly have a knack for picking great songs and making them their own.
They're a well oiled tight live band who've played together a long time
Not touring so much, getting more rest. They have more energy now
@@MetaITurtlethey done loads of tours dude they are touring again this year
43 years of experience :)
this is the best video on youtube i've seen since that video of australian guy punch a kangaroo in the face to save his dog
This is one of my favourite comments of all time 😂😂😂😂
It really was a good punch. \m/
No lies detected
That kangaroo was just as rocked by that punch as Elton was by this cover
TH-cam search: Damn Kangaroos
I have it on a loop. 🙌🏼☮️🤣🦘
People love to crap on Lars, but he kills it here. The whole band killed it, I'm a huge fan of Elton and Metallica so this was the best thing I've seen in a long, long time.
I'm no drummer but all I ever see or hear is amazing drum sound and a guy working his a$$ off ,dripping with sweat and loving what he's doing..he's a workhorse n for me ,, he's my guy idc what anyone says.
Cheers mate. Lars is the best drummer for Metallica. Off course there a better ones. But he is good
@@leongroot2528 and there are better ones than the better ones...beyond a handful of universally known greats it's a popularity contest
Lars is a good drummer, he had his moments though...(St.Anger??)😂😂 I know one thing, in the studio he runs shit. He's just so obnoxious 😅😅
Lars was definately in the pocket on this.
James Hetfield in his Prime in his 60's. Insane !
Probably one of the best performances I've ever seen next to Heart doing Stairway to Heaven @ the Kennedy Center honors. Metallica has a way with covers for sure and they just absolutely crushed this. The ending made me tear up seeing Elton on his feet telling them it was amazing!!
you should hear 5finger death punch do the song "Bad company."
@@marty3888was that sarcasm? FFDP doesn't even come close
The Deftones doing "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" by The Cure is one of my favorite covers.
Totally agree
@@marty3888 🥰
Metallica needs to release this on spotify ASAP!
This song is 50 years old and could have been realeased this year and become a hit straight away !
The riff with the double bass at the end really brought it home. Great job boys!
You ain’t kidding. The standing O at the end too. Jeeeeezz
Lars got some doublebass gainz:)
@@alexanderjungblut5994he sure always does but situational
I love how Mr. Hammett keeps playing his "Greeny" all the times he can ❤
Yeah it’s a magical guitar. I would cut off my left foot to have it. It’s basically useless anyway.
I am trying to get one of those replicas since the Gary moore signature but its still far from my budget and even more these days
He paid enough for it!😂
I'm gonna say it. I don't think Greeny sounds that good. I don't get it
@@stephenrobinson3301how much, do you know?
First this needs to be a single, but second how is Metallica like the greatest cover band of all time? Every cover they ever do is amazing!
Honestly I have never been a Metallica fan (but have had respect for their talent.). Their cover of what is Elton and Bernie’s hardest/rocking song was absolutely spot on. Loved it!!!!
Never in a million years would I have ever thought something like this would happen.
You would at about 800k years it would have crossed your mind !!!!!
James has been hitting another level vocally since they returned from their Covid break. 72 Seasons was probably his best vocal performance since Load/Reload and he’s been killing it live as well
Yeah, the time off did him a world of good. He's been sounding fantastic on the 72 Seasons tour, and he looks like he's having a lot of fun.
Love 72 seasons! First Metallica CD I ever bought 😂
I don’t know how long it took the guys to learn that song or how many times they had to practice it, but damn, it’s an incredible arrangement and flawless performance! Phenomenal job, Metallica👏🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
My good guess is we have Lars to thank for a lot of that.
I know Davey Johnstone must of had much influence on this song,, and Melltalica🤘
I am a metal dude to the core.. but I absolutely love music to its core and I have to say this is quite epic. I'll have another beer please..
Its incredible how metallica turned this song into a metal piece of music..!!! aweome!!!
They do it with every cover they do!
The legendary men of Metallica absolutely killin' it on this fiery classic song, honoring Elton & Bernie right in front of them. What a thrilling occasion for rock and the musicians!
This band has such an extremely unique and characteristic sound, that they make any music they play, from basically any style, sound like their own. I’m sure that at this point they could cover Bob Marley and make it seem like a new single they are presenting
Never heard James make that sound with a guitar. Cool as shit.
I am a huge fan of Elton John. I am also a huge Metallica fan.
I am NOT typically a fan of cover songs. Rarely does the covering artist do the original work justice. But this shit literally gave me chills. Absolutely incredible.
Elton: "-Amazing!!!"
They came they showed the BLEW UP THE STAGE!!
They are truly amazing. I've been a diehard fan since 1986. My favorite band of all time
Totally FLAWLESS! James wasn't reading lyrics from a telepromter, their timing and sound was PERFECT! You can tell they worked hard to learn this and to perfect it. This shows how important it was to them to honor Elton and Bernie. Giving THAT performance was class, respect and tribute all in one! I'm proud to be a fan of music today.
I can’t stop watching this performance! It just fu**ing rocks!❤
I rolled my brother's '65 Dodge Dart while listening to this song back in 1974...and yet I still love it! Metallica just slayed with this one.
…And that Dodge Dart is gone forever, but in England “Love Lies Bleeding” is simply a flower that can keep cranking out tiny red blossoms until it falls over, you see. 👌
My god… this was GREAT.
I think Cliff is smiling in Heaven with this!
Meh
I've watched this 6X already and just love it! Very energizing.
Haha yeh think I’m upto around 15 😂
So good!!! Only Metallica could give a Mercyful Fate vibe to one of Elton John's greatest songs! Awesomeness
It's been on repeat for sure, not sure how many I'm up to at this point haha. So good!
I was there! it was amazing n it’s living rent free in my head since ❤ they absolutely killed it
@helenehaviland966 What was the audience reaction at the beginning of the song and at the end?
MIND BLOWN😱
How do they do it, perform perfection with flawless playing.
Metallica is so damn amazing, I'm so lucky to of been born in this era. Thank you metallica forever✌️
I agree 100% I was alive while Metallica walked the earth.
Hetfield has matured extremely well, his vocals are on point, and his guitar work is always super tight.Overall the band is firing on all cylinders 🤟🤟🤟
Well, well... anyone expecting anything less than this!?!?!
Spectacular rendition ! METALLICA always delivers
I didn't know the line up preformers at the start of the show and later seen James in the front row audience ,, thinking ,,, would be great to see Metallica do a cover,,,, the rest is history🤘
50 plus years and it still rides my flesh!
Mine too, goosebumps all the way through
Lars is absolutely killing it on the drums... feels like he's in his 20's again, so good... what a band, so versatile
DAMN, that was a fantastic performance!! METALLICA should win some kind of award for this cover!!
Mind Blown !!!!...Metallica NAILED IT . this song has to be in their set list now..who would have seen this coming 30 years ago.?..sure as hell not me .
What 'Tallica have done here is nothing short of amazing..they have taken a classic song, paid respect & homage to it, especially in front of the writers of said song, but they have also put their DNA into it without ruining it..amazing performance..
Every time I see Greeny still play the big events, the big stages, I smile for Gary and Peter.
I think thats what Kirk wants too... well said.
At the end you can easily read on Elton’s lips « amazing »…
These guys are just too good in all what they do 👍👍👍
They should release this as a single and donate the money to one of eltons charities
There’s definitely an AIDS charity out there they can donate to
Shut up
This!
I agree
What money do you think they’ll possibly make from this. It obviously doesnt belong to them and they didnt even upload it. They’re averaging max 50k views for one day of viewing.
Seven minutes and fifty-six seconds of pure joy. Wow.
Seeing Elton rocking to them, saying amazing in the end, says it all
They nailed it so much.. they’ve won the audience through the whole cover. Harmonies, clear singing.. and mighty punch !
They prove again why they’re so good at this, and why they are Metallica !
This is an amazing version of my favorite Elton John song. If they put this on Apple Music, I will happily buy a copy.
His ESP snakebyte is getting that aged white cream colour to it. Looks awesome
I believe this isn’t his normal white snakebyte, this maybe a cream version.
It's a off white color James wanted that color from factory
@@phantom_of_the_pines what I mean is, while James may have wanted that off, the off white colour he now has, has that aged look to it.
It looks aged naturally. If you notice the cut-out it's darker and the headstock area is lighter. That happens naturally. I have a ESP Edwards Eclipse that I bought Arctic White. 8 years later now it looks between cream and off-white. It's normal for guitars with white paint.
I also realized this
The instrumental intro they did was truly epic!! Metallica never let me down
What a time to be alive - Elton John fan boying out to Metallica covering him, and it jams. Much respect all around.
Holy shit that was incredible! Long live MUSIC!
Metallica never cease to amaze me. Always trying something different and always remaining relevant while their peers tour the world playing nostalgia sets.
I've been listening to Metallica since I was 11 and I'm now 50. And I never thought I'd hear Metallica do a cover of Elton John... this band continues to surprise me in a good way and I love their open-mindedness. Metallica have always been incredibly good at covers and they're proving it once again. When can we expect another Garage inc?
I'd say no to another Garage Inc. They did it once, thats it....just my opinion.
I saw them in Toronto for the Garage Inc mini tour, club show, 1100 people, give or take. Metallica cover band "Battery" opened for them.
And the same for me... started with the band as a kid when RTL came out and have been there ever since. Im 51.
Peace bro.
Amazing! Why am I crying? Tears of absolute Joy!
I've got chills! That was in my opinion the greatest cover of any song of all time. Amazing. Bravo Metallica!🤘
They killed this! Amazing version of an amazing song!
James’s voice is getting better with age! ! Is it the cigars!? I don’t care, may you live forever Papa Het❤️🤘
This is so badass.
Metallica is already legend status. When they are pumped, motivated, and turned ON, they are fucking gods. When something brings out that little extra fire they have, nobody can match them.
Wow this was the best of Metallica James and his band did a wonderful work I keep watching over and over again super amazing
Never a huge fan of Metallica or heavy metal but know a great performance regardless of my taste in music and this was definitely one of those.
Just a fantastic version df an old favorite. Spot on live performance. Im gonna have to relisten to all of Metallicas hits now. Certainly changed my mind with this performance

Elton and Bernie absolutely loved this performance!
Being a huge Metallica fan it took me over a week to watch this because I couldn’t imagine them doing a Elton John song well. I was wrong!! It was awesome!!
There aren't enough like buttons for this... you need a more than like button. Metallica has somehow undergone a late career renaissance- they sound just as good as they used to when they recorded Puppets, and what an amazing skill of organizing non-metal songs into metal. Well done boys.
It's amazing that after all these years Metallica still has so much energy and can play anything
It's nice to see the spotlight shining on real musicians and not just 'hip hop hooligans' and 'auto tune pop princesses'. Metallica's amazing performance was a testament to superb songwriting of Elton John and Bernie Taupin , as well as the flawless synchronicity of a top tier band
one of the best cover that metallica ever made imo
Elton and Bernie the greatest pop/rock duo of all times.
What a great performance by Metallica….awesome!
This is the 3rd time I've come to rewatch this, never old❣ I want to hear all Elton and Bernie's songs Metallicized❣❤🔥🤘❤🔥🤘❤🔥
This seriously blew me away! So many great performers that night, but I nearly flew off my sofa when Metallica started up!
This is truly one of the most incredible rock tribute performances of all time. Yes, I too have come back again and again to watch. What an amazing arrangement and performance by Metallica.
You have landed

This has always been one of my favorite Elton John songs and Metallica's cover was simply awesome!
Metallica just metalized Sir Elton John s best song . Seeing Sir Elton yelling “Amazing “ to the boys will bring chills to any music lover,METALLICA RULES!
This was unreal.. the best I've heard from them in years. Wow great job Metallica
Whoa... them boys practiced! So tight, so much power. And the song suits them perfectly. I'm glad Elton likes it. I think they tried really hard to do a "Metallica" song that honors Elton's work, and they succeeded.
One of the best Metallica performances of all time!
That jam at the 7:30 mark sounded fucking awesome, the way James was picking the strings just topped it right off.
Fantastic. I've watched it a dozen times already. Metallica does a great tribute.
