Marvel really screwed themselves over with doubling down on the comedy turning our favorite characters into clowns, shoving diversity and feminism agendas down our throats, and pointlessly killing off T'Challa when he was meant to lead the new Avengers. What, if anything, Marvel would have to do besides hire competent writers that respect the characters is beyond me.
I don't think phase 4 was ever going to do as well as phase 3. Also I'd push back on the idea that it was creatively a failure as well. Shang Chi, No Way Home, and Black Panther were good movies. And while there were some dumb elements of Dr Strange, I'd say it was overall pretty fun. Black Widow, Eternals, and Love and Thunder are the only ones I think you could argue are bad. But it's also worth noting that this may be a symptom of the fact that we got 7 movies in 2 years. That's not good for quality control.
I've always wanted to see some form of objective, statistical, evidence-based analysis comparing the commercial and critical receptions of the phases because I've been too lazy to do it myself. Glad someone did it for me! And I 100% agree with the fact that we really have to consider so many mitigating and advantageous factors for all of these. Context does really matter. So I concur that failure is a subjective term in this case, and the unsophisticated colloquialism of calling something a failure when we personally dislike it, or refuting that claim due to a contrary opinion, is a willfully ignorant point of view that, let's be honest, we all have at many points. From a creative perspective, I don't believe phase 4 to be completely abysmal, but it did truly suffer from the quantity hurting the quality. Absolutely. That point is entirely subjective, though as you point out, the consensus from both critics and audiences considering the public available evidence. You make very salient points here. Beyond that, money talks. As long as they're sufficiently profitable they'll keep chugging along. We can only hope that after the whole Disney debacle with the Bobs and such, it leads to an increase in the quality of the art which we enjoy. Glad to see you back, man. Keep it up as long as you are in the right state of mind, and regardless, I hope you're doing well. Have a good one.
"Insanely stupid" is pretty accurate review for Hawkeye. The Hawkeye show alone is enough to ruin phase 4 for me. Only highlights in that clusterfuck were the moments Clint was on the screen. (Which isn’t really much, because the show clearly hates him)
You might want to do a seperate video on Quantumania, also look at the drop-off rates after opening weekend for these movies, it's not too good. Anyway, imma get ready for the Mario Movie...
LOVE this video!!! I like that you did the leg work of looking up all the metrics for box office and ratings... AND... I agree with you on Rotten Tomatoes not being the end all, be all... I also like Metacritic and IMDb's ratings for films more! And, YES! Phase 4 being the WORST MCU Phase is STILL an MCU Phase, and not the DCEU! Lol...
That's the key word though 'marvel had to come back down to earth' and I think all fans had to come back down to earth. Phase 4 is the reboot. And sadly I found it overwhelming because it was too many shows on disney plus.
I would push back on the idea that the products are getting worse. Between Wakanda Forever, No Way Home, and Shang Chi: I'd say marvel is making just as many good movies as they were in 2 year time periods in previous phases. The problems seems to be that the extra material is not as good. 4 movies in one year appeared to not work out. I also think part of the problem is that there isn't much connective tissue between the different movies and there is no new lead. Phases 1-3 revolved around Iron Man. The MCU has no lead character anymore.
I don't think MCU Phase 4 was a failure at all, but it had tons of problems that Marvel needed to fix right away. Character introductions, storylines, writing, character development and plotlines needs to improve for the future. But to say it was a failure is just ridiculous to me lol
If you produce something that was good you're gonna have customers come back. If your sequel product purposely degrades the last product. You're still going to have that audience. It's a bait and switch. Not a scam really. But they were "successful" at taking your money. The product sucked. Now I'll let you give a company who doesn't care about you, Your hard-earned money. I'll let you and other people review it for me before I go and buy product and consume
I wonder how much of the phase was hurt by covid. There's no denying that it interfered with most of those movies. For example, they had to film a lot on green screens and change plans because of needing to stop and restart filming at some points. I also think that too much studio control may have played a role in it. Every movie in the MCU is Feige's so if he is making bad decisions, it affects everything.
Yes, yes it was
Haven’t even started it and the answer is yes. In every way 😂
Man great video with lots of just straight up facts and research presented in a really great way. Good to see ya back love these video essays!

@@datguy3581 Wakanda Forever and Shang Chi weren't good films. At least not nearly as good as the ones before. No Way Home was good at best as well.

Yeah. I think the lesson to learn here is that quantity does not equal quality.
Pls come back daddy :(
It's sad that the MCU has to rely on Loki to save their franchise... I'm just saying. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
miss ur content 😢
