  • Cowfish are also known as boxfish and trunkfish. They get these common names from their boxy shape as well as the cow-like horns present in some species! Cowfish are tropical fish occurring in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. They are generally shallow water fish, not typically found below a depth of 328 feet (100m). Cowfish have hexagonal patterns on their skin which come from the shells that almost completely encase their bodies! If disturbed, cowfish can release a toxic to ward off predators and potentially gravely affect other nearby smaller animals (like coral polyps). Cowfish are like underwater helicopters because they can fully rotate in place, but they sacrifice speed for this maneuverability.
    Scientific Name: Family - Ostraciidae
Range: lagoons, bays, reefs, and seaweed beds of India, Atlantic, Pacific oceans
Size: up to 20in (50cm) usually not even half this
Diet: sponges, tunicates, soft corals, crustaceans, worms as well as algae
    Lifespan: less than a decade

Cowfish is one of my favorite fish. I've only seen honeycomb cowfish. Watching one change color (brown to blue to green) blew my mind. I wish you'd shown that. Also, I found it somewhat disconcerting when you were talking about cowfish but showing non-cowfish boxfish/trunkfish.

Thanks for watching and commenting! We intended for this episode to be about cowfish, trunkfish, boxfish, etc. so maybe that's where the confusion is coming from? Hope you enjoyed it regardless!

Beautiful and wide variety of colors. I think I’ve seen them at an aquarium, I learned where they live in the ocean and how they reproduce 👍👌

@@AnimalFactFiles Not sure where you live, but they used to have some Cowfish at the Seattle Aquarium. Btw, the Aquarium in Baltimore has an awesome sea turtle! I loved watching him! He has a name but I forgot what it is... they have a great open pool that you can watch from above - really nicely done! 👍👍

Nice. They are very interesting looking, aren't they? I never knew they have outer shells like that. I guess I never thought about it given their shape.
    Thanks for the video!
