I bought 3 single stalks at the produce store. Rooted them in the window and planted outside. It's been less than 2 years and I've divided then 3 times so far and have 6 large bushes like the ones you first showed and quite a few more about half that size. I make mosquito spray , tea and also every few weeks give them all a haircut and use the dry leaves as laying box bedding for my hens. They also enjoy eating it fresh. I'm I. 9B Florida so they never suffer for cold. The most that happens is the very tips about 2 inches will get brown. We only get 2 nights close to a frost if that a winter. Things grow like weeds here. I keep smaller plants in pots near my porches and doors because I find there are less bugs. Also my monarch butterflies prefer to chrysalis in the leaves for protection. I'm thinking because the bugs don't love the smell.

I love your lemongrass! Yours looked amazing and healthy. I grew a lot here on our property in LA. If you have a lot and not knowing what to do, please bring them by to any vietnamese temple. They alway need it to make soup. I always bring mine to the temple when my husband harvests them. We also shared w everyone during covid. We boiled it w lemon leaves and do hot steam for days to overcome covid.

Thanks! I like to harvest the grass by pulling it out, then cutting about an inch above the root. Use the grass for tea or cooking (you can also freeze it for later) and replant just the root. Works great!

Your lemongrass is beautiful. I love making tea with the leaves. I add a little fresh ginger and honey. It makes a phenomenal cup of tea, chock full of antioxidants and other goodies

I cut my winter killed leaves in the spring, and use them on the floor of the hen sleeping quarters for mosquito's. I hang in the rafters also, scrunch it , it still smells good. I'm in 8b. It doesn't die here.

Never grown lemon grass before. Have you & Alice ever created a gardening/cookbook before? If you haven’t, I wish you would. It would be a fun & interesting read!

Wow, can't believe after so long I've finally stumbled across a permaculture channel in my county! Super excited to grow lemongrass this year, although I didn't realize it grew so densely--I had been considering growing ginger underneath, but will probably grow them in separate areas now. Do you ever do tours of your garden?

One of best uses for this herb is a sauce I came across in SE Thailand. Finley chop the following 3x stalks of Lemon Grass, cloves of half bulb of Garlic, 3x Shallots and 3x Chillis. Add a handful of Peanuts, juice of 3x squeezed Limes, 3x spoons of Fish Sauce, big dollop of Palm Sugar (or 3 of sugar), 3x spoons White Vinegar. Start with equal amounts, increase quantities in direction of your taste creating balance of salt, sweet, sour and spice (have a teaspoon handy, taste as you go). You'll know when you've got it at the crucial point cause it'll slap you in the face and ask you for the bus fare home. Drizzle over Thai style crispy fried fish: th-cam.com/video/BBgLx_SidaI/w-d-xo.html which incidentally pairs really well with another lemon grass dish Tom Kha Gai: th-cam.com/video/2BbIZwmIP7Q/w-d-xo.html

Loooove lemongrass. One of my favorite lemongrass items I bought years ago (want to learn how to make!) was a Lemongrass and Avocado Oil body butter...OMG, it was DIVINE! (Borghese line, I think)

Somehow my Lemongrass has died. I moved to a warmer (and wetter) climate a year ago, planted a Lemongrass in an existing double tyre, it grew beautifully, died back and now, it's Spring, and it hasn't grown back. Very upset coz my local nursery doesn't sell it. I grew it in coastal Sydney, Australia and it grew bigger than your ones there Dan. It was absolutely beautiful. But in coastal, Taranaki, New Zealand it has died 😞. I'm a bit stumped as to why it's died tbh 🤔

We tried the double tire planters and found that the oils from the rubber killed off a lot of our plantings. We have moved away from them and have had no issues since!
