    Hi! I was wondering why do you mix the wash with water? Would otherwise be still too dark if you did not? Wash is already light enough as opposed to pure acrylic paint, right? I am just curious since I bought my first black wash paint today. Mine came in a more liquid state. Thank you very much!

    • @DaCostaStudio
      @DaCostaStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This wash is like a filter to unify all the colors. Then you can put a coat of satin varnish and make the panel lines wiht a more strong mix. Stay safe :)

    Did you also apply the gloss varnish before applying the wash? I just purchased Vallejo washes, and I use Vallejo paints, but I'm having a really hard time with things.

    • @jameslane9537
      @jameslane9537 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually apply gloss varnish pre-wash, as the wash seems to flow better on a gloss surface. The coat of varnish also acts as a "save point". If you get wash where you don't want it, you can wipe or scrub it away without ruining the paint job underneath.

    • @TheBattleRabbit860
      @TheBattleRabbit860 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameslane9537 Oh, cool. So, essentially what I can do I spray a gloss coat on, play around with a wash and adjust it here and there then move on with a matte finish, or I can use mineral spirits/acrylic thinner depending on the varnish to remove it altogether and then move on from there. That's kinda awesome. Now I just need to get comfortable with [i.e. overcome my anxiety of] using my [first] airbrush to spray gloss/matte coats lol. Thanks for the information.

    • @jameslane9537
      @jameslane9537 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBattleRabbit860 I don't know about mineral spirits... I just use water to scrub away any excess wash.
      If you are talking about removing varnish, there is no need, just go over the gloss with whatever varnish gives you the effect you are looking for.

    • @TheBattleRabbit860
      @TheBattleRabbit860 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameslane9537 Ah, I see. It's safe to use the Vallejo wash over an acrylic topcoat? Or should I use a different kind, like Testors Glosscote? This is my first time doing anything with any kind of gloss/matte finish as well as using washes/weathering.

    Is it ok if I use alcohol instead water?

    • @DaCostaStudio
      @DaCostaStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not recommended, as alcohol can react with the glue and cause some reaction damaging the paint. These products are water-based, so I always recommend only water. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

    • @nathanlewis2681
      @nathanlewis2681 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly recommend using the Vallejo thinning or glaze medium instead of water. Takes a while to dry. The results are better than using water

    Why do models always look better without the clear coat? The clear coat always changes the look of the weathering. Sometimes it also can look white-ish and chalky if you use a matte top coat.

    • @DaCostaStudio
      @DaCostaStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Final varnishes are sometimes an option. I never put varnish on my tanks, because the finish is oil and I like it. I do the same on some planes as well. In the model of this video it is for Wargames, so it is necessary varnish to protect from handling. When applying matte varnish, care must be taken not to apply too much so that this whitish effect does not become. If this happens, just apply a few gloos varnish to the affected areas until it disappears. Then just give the matte again, and it is refined. Cheers :)

      Thanks for the help. I think youre right. I was most likely putting too much clear coat on. (it was Tamiya matte clear coat that I used). And as you say, it can go white. Thanks for the tips on how to avoid it and rectify it. Luckily I didn't actually put it on my model. I only put it on a test model.
      Are those Vallejo washes youre using in the video really acrylic? I know some products say they are acrylic on the bottle, but they aren't really proper acrylic like say Tamiya acrylics.

    • @DaCostaStudio

      That's great. I will have to try these out. I tried making an acrylic wash using water and Tamiya acrylic, but it looked terrible lol, so I bought some oils. There are so many different ways of weathering I didn't realise. Ive experimented with weathering powders and pastels too. Saw someone use decal fix with weathering powders so im going to give that a try too.

    Good video but pointless noisy soundtrack. Painting is meant to be relaxing. Noise pollution argh. Great products. Not sure why the darker wash would go over the lighter one as they negates the first wash. Always varnish/lacquer model before washes to help them run and adhere. Being acrylic there's no chance of underlaying paint damage if dry before application. Great stuff
