    *Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

    Love my BG's.Last week at morehead,I was netting my buddies speck when a big grey jerked my 2500 with matching BG system rod OVER. A split second later ,I had dove over after it. Came up fighting current and fish. Struggled toward the boat,handed the rod to buddy,who proceeded to land my big grey,as I crawled back in.We got lotsa laughs. I rinsed it off with fresh water,and continued to catch trout. BG all day long.

    Daiwa's are objectively the best bang for the buck. Not just the BG, but a lot of their spinning reels. You aren't going to find any other spinning reels that are packed full of features, have the same quality, and definitely have the same smoothness at a similar retail price point.

    I live in Orange County, CA and bought some BG's because: 1) I trust your reviews, and 2) Daiwa's US headquarters is in Orange County and they accept walk-in repairs.
    The only hesitation I have with the BG series of reels is their lack of seals: two compared to Penn reels for the same price that often have 3 of 4 seals. Several surfcasting TH-camrs say the BG 8000 is fantastic until it gets wet then it's over. I've only fished my BG4000 and BG8000 offshore so far which is less strain than the surf... hopefully they hold up for a decade 👍

    I'm looking at buying the daiwa bg 4000 for fishing for stuff like snapper in the ocean on the east coast of Australia. What size fish do you think the 4000 would handle? I don't know much about fishing yet but I'm keen to get into it and I'd just like to know what I could potentially catch with it. Cheers

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely enough to mix it up with queenies and baras in the estuaries, and smaller schoolie snappers in the rocks and other fish in the kelp beds. But it might be smart to step up to the 4500 reel, which has better line capacity and more drag just in case you get into big snapper that want to cut you off in the rocks or you like to play around with the smaller kingfish in the bays.

    Can’t decide on the 2500 or 3000. I have a little 15ft fiberglass boat that I can go out into the inter coastal and inshore with just not deep into rivers or offshore. I’m thinking the 3000 but really can’t decide.

    These reels are amazing and look great, the only thing that would make them better is the max drag. I'd love a 20 thousand series with 50 pounds or more of drag and I'd pay two or three times more for it. I'd love to shark fish with these but 33lbs of drag is pretty low.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I do a great deal of shark fishing internationally with spinning reels, and use my Saltigas and Stellas for that, and can only use about half of the drag capacity; those reels have way TOO MUCH drag to be usable - ever. I NEVER use anything over 20-25 on even the largest spinning reel. 20# of drag is enough to easily pull you out of the boat if you don't have a rail to dig into. Be mindful that most guys catching cow tuna and huge marlin NEVER use over 25# of drag. Those huge Penn 9/0 reels that are the staple in the shark fishing industry have a max drag of 20-22# fully locked down. 33# of drag is way more than you will ever use to fight any fish with any spinning reel.

    Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod th-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

    so the smaller 2500 version doesnt have a manual bale? what does that mean? does it flip over directly when u hit the handle?

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Freshwater fisherman throwing lighter lures/weights generally prefer an auto-bail over a manual bail. Daiwa, or any other company, would not sell many manual-bail reels in the small line classes. You do have the option of manually flipping the bail. As a matter of habit, I always manually flip my bail because it is better on the reel. But on the 2500 reel, the auto-bail feature is included.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113

      Every other reel in the same price range that use a bearing in the line roller use VERY cheap bearings. In a $100 reel, I would rather have a polyphthalamide bushing than a low-quality bearing. I have never heard of anyone experiencing line twist, failure, or smoothness issues with the bushing. Remember this is a $100 reel and I am comparing it to similar priced reels.

      I own 2 Nasci 5000s and they are awsome reels. I fish for snook and need power to stop them and I get it with the Nasci. The BGs are good reels but to just call every other reels crap you look like an idiot.

      Jarad White Thanks Bro I probably will get both when I have the $ but they both seem like good reels. The Nasci seems more light and compact but the BG has power.

      Penn does make some fantastic reels; just not in this price range. Everything Penn makes bellow the Slammer 3 line is inferior in quality to the BG.

    i bought this reel around 200usd in Maldives and it feels as almost good as my saltiga 8000 (WHICH IS OF COURSE 10 TIMES BETTER) BUT STILL worth every buck ...i just wished it had just a little more drag to easily handle merlin....this is the best diva reel for the buck....GREAT DEAL GREAT PRODUCT
    i use a BG 8000 with 80lb braid DAIWA J BRAID) and an okuma Azores ROD works great good combination
    u can easily takedown JACKS and SNappers even yellowfins
    the only cons is its difficult to get spare spools for this one

      @desertdogoutdoors1113  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Thats why I compared it to my saltigas in this review. Basically, Daiwa made all of their saltwater spinning reels between the BG and Saltiga irrelevant. I would rather have a BG than a Saltist or Isla.

    I fish at the jetti and inlet and lay down reel on rock when handling fish which dent and nick the reel, especially the lip of the spool. The spools lip's bigger than the spool body so when lay down with the rod the lip will hit the ground first...……...bad design! (nicks and dents on the spool body don't affect the casting or reeling of line). I have the BG 4000, 4500 and 8000 size. I ended up getting the TroutBoy ZM 4000 and 5000, and use my Penn 7500ss. And use my BG else where, not on the jetti. Almost any spinning reel nowadays has the thin lip of the spool design....wth! stupid design...look at the old Penn SpinFisher and old Daiwa bg (bg60)...that's how the spool should be, the lip diameter should be smaller than the body and should be thick and curve upward. The bigger lip will interfere with casting because the line must spool out on a bigger circle, this is more noticeable when you like to cast out far and the last leg of the line that will be out will be snagged and slowed down by the big lip. The Daiwa BG 4500 and bigger size is obvious, bg8000 is the worst. I am thinking about getting the old Daiwa BG90, or the Penn SpinFisher vi 8500 when they drop their price to around $150.

      All reels in this price range are made with cheap Asian labor, including the NASCI and the Battle 2. You will not get a USA or Japan made reel with these features at twice the price.

      I agree. Corners had to be cut on a $100 real, but at least they defaulted on the stronger side and kept the plastic to a minimum.

      I have 2 Penn Battle IIs that I am going to do a review on. IMO, the battle is the WORST $100 reel on the market; very poor craftsmanship and materials, these should be $40 reels. I also own one new NASCI, and was disappointed to see that they used a cheap plastic frame that causes massive flex in the reel foot causing the gears to bind. Shimano's replacement for the Symetre is an absolute turd. The NASCI also has too much plastic where metal should be used and very cheap bearings. IMO, The BG reel are in a completely different league.

      Marco P fished the hell out of 2 5000 bgs probably over 200 blue cats between 30 to 55 pounds .over this past weekend caught 150 bluefish in 8 to 15 pounds these reels run.i was die hard shimano stradic fan but for the money the daiwa bgs are on par.far as penn battle it's not even close you fish battles hard gears wear very quickly and they get rough I owned 3 and sold them for money for new bgs .if you review battle make sure you work it hard I guarantee it will not feel a smooth as it did out of box.

      I actually have been fishing my battle 6000 with a custom handle (only mod) for a good year and a half. I've had it dunked, reeled underwater, and almost spooled 3 times and with a little bit of grease and one service it's almost as smooth as out of the box which is immensely impressive especially because my saltist isn't even close to the smoothness. I have caught at least 100 stripers 150 bluefish and 3 bluefin Tuna up to 76 pounds and it's survived. My bg 8000 couldn't survive one run from a 30 inch bluefin and it's drag got burnt

      I planned on doing a video review of my Penn Battle IIs and the Penn Spinfisher V, of which suffered numerous problems after just a few fishing trips, but reel reviewer Alan Hawk already did a review and found his brass pinion gear damaged after a couple trips just like mine. In addition, my Battle 4000 and 6000 had corroded main gears from the factory (you may want to check yours). The battle 4000 was sitting in the rod holder while the boat ran to a local island and found the bail arm snapped off when I grabbed it. The Battle is a very cheaply made reel. Make a video about how much you love the battle, but my video will not be such a glowing review.

    I just may buy the BG 4 or 5000 for surf fishing due to its greater line capacity only. However, nothing beats any Shimano that has x-ship, or the hagane cold forged gearing. Not even Diawa has those two vastly superior qualities that greatly enhance its power, durability and smoothness.
    I have no doubt that those Diawa's are nice reels and I'd be happy with it, but to say that the $100 Shimano's (specifically the Nasci) are garbage? Not even close to true.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Working on a Nasci review. I can tie line to a weight, button down the drag, and the NACI has so much frame flex that the gears bind and you can't reel. The Daiwa BG will not do that. The BG also uses better bearings than the nasci and the direct drive handle on the BG is a huge plus over the shimanos at this price point. I liked the Symetre, but the nasci that replaced it is a downgrade.

      follow up on my last post... I ended up buying the BG 6500 because the cost difference was minimal between that and the 5000. The thing is a BEAST!! I haven't used it yet but going to spool with probably 65lb braid and use for surf fishing.
      looking for some advice.
      Question: would a 9 or 10 ft 2 piece MH or H rod work for surf? looking at one of Diawa's surf rods. prices are excellent! not wanting to spend more than $150.

      "XShip" is Shimano marketing verbage...Daiwa and Abu has been employing tHis type of dual/pinion bearing support system for decades.
      Even my Tournament Z-ia reels from the 1990s have this design.

      Mainly the gears and the clutch. The drag on the battle 2s is better than the BG reels (feels smoother), but thats about it. For reels in the $100 range, corners are cut and compromises are made, but the BG series of reels seems to make the least amount of compromises to give us a $100 real.
