    Hi Brian,
    Just a couple of things that might help. The distributor cover was probably designed to shield the radio from ignition noise. The c2 and c3s used to have the chrome boxes surrounding the distributor and coil.
    You shouldn't have to remove the distributor to access the inner rear intake bolt. Rather just remove the two bolts that secure the egr temperature sensor, then move the heat pipe over just a bit. This will allow you to run your torx head socket in from the passenger side. If you use 3/8 drive ratchet with a 4-6" extension you should be able to reach that bolt.
    I'm installing my plenum today after replacing the lower intake and injectors. Bubba only hand tightened the runners, what a mess
    Thanks for videos, they're quite helpful.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey buddy, thanks for the rundown. That is good information to pass along. I have often wondered about that rear cover on the TPI since it almost looks like a finish panel. On the Corvettes it is metal, and the F Bodies it's plastic for some reason. The F Bodies also don't run the EGR system the same way as the Corvette, so the distributor coil is mounted on those rear two passenger intake bolts instead of the bypass pipe. Will have another update uploaded soon. Wife and kiddos are forcing me to take tomorrow off for my birthday. 😂

      Hi again,
      I appreciated your help in the past, what a wonderful resource. I'm on a nickel budget so with help I'm getting my Vette straightened out.
      It's all bottomed up with the exception of the egr vacuum line, although I think I understand that. Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe the line from the egr goes forward and plugs into the pressure switch that's mounted on the thermostat. The other hose on the sensor then goes to the egr canister. After double checking the canister hose I noted that my hand was covered in soot..... interesting.
      Sadness 💔 though, after going through all the work replacing the injectors, the Vette won't start. I don't have all the fancy test equipment, I'd pull my hair out if I wasn't bald. Lol The motor looks nice, I polished the runners, plenum, and even painted the thermostat housing and fuel lines. It's disappointing ☹️ that she won't wake up. It cranks but I only get muffler explosions. It did start to kick for a half second when I gave the pcv valve a shot of brake clean..... interesting.
      Aren't 80s GM cars fun?
      Thanks again for your help in the past. Any help is always appreciated but certainly not expected. I know you're a very busy man. Have a good one.
      Thanks

      @@olddog3728 you got it, that's the way it's routed on the corvettes. Glad I have been able to help you, these 80's cars can be frustrating especially without the diagnostic tools. With the car not starting and experiencing a backfire it sounds like you may have the distributor off one or two teeth. That would be the first thing I check, and then we can go from there. Just let me know 👍

    im doing this right now on my 88 formula 305 and had to walk away from it to your video. somehow that wiring harness for the passenger side injectors is all jammed down in between the valve cover and the plenum pipes. It's really bad where it splits off at the front most plenum pipe. cant reach the bottom torx bolts. great video and thanks for posting it.

    Hey there! Great video! LOVE this third gens! I have an 86 iroc z and an 89 GTA. I have a question about the GTA! Its a TPI 350 all factory but I'm having an issue with the idle! It idles fine when I first start it but then it surges from 600 rpm to 1200 rpm. I've checked everything that I could think of that can cause it to no avail!...its all factory under the hood minus the smog pump. Thanks in advance!

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you have an issue once the ECM is going into closed loop mode. Have you hooked it up to a scan tool to see if any of the sensor parameters are out of whack once it goes closed loop? The Snap On MT2500 is a good tool to use on the first gen computer systems and will give you quite a bit of valuable information.

      On the corvettes it runs from a T fitting in the bottom of the throttle body, across the driverside valve cover, and down to the evap solenoid/canister located in the inner front wheelwell attached to the bumper impact bar.

    I’m rebuilding my grandpas 57 Bel Air and before he passed away he had a L98 freshly rebuilt so I am so thankful I can across your videos! I have a couple questions... 1) Can you block off the throttle body warming system? I am in California so I don’t need the system. 2) can you delete the PCV system or is it easier to just retain the system? 3) What does the vacuum line next to the fuel regulator line connect to? Thank you in advance!

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kyle, thanks for the comment. In answer to your questions, yes you can run a hose bypass on the throttle warming system as it isn't necessary in the warmer climates. It is probably best to leave the PCV system alone, as deleting it cause some negative issues with the breathing and performance of the TPI engines. As for the vacuum lines, check out my video explanation of the TPI vacuum circuit and routing.

    Did you hand loosen the plemum bolts before or did you still use the impact to get them loose?

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hand loosen torx bolts as a rule due to their propensity for stripping. I even go so far as to hit them with PBT blaster and mildly heat the head of the bolt with a propane touch before trying to remove. Most of that I've been doing off camera and I may have forgotten to mention how I do it. Let me know if you need anything else👍.

    Hello from the Netherlands. Question: if you install the center plenum again, does it simply slide back in? or do I need to loosen up the intake tubes in order to make space for the gaskets? Thanks for your reply.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will slide into place with the lower bolts tightened, but most times it is easier to leave the lower intake tube bolts loose to give yourself some wiggle room. You will just need to be ready with the universal joints and extensions to get at the two hidden lower bolts that come in from the backside of the runners. Thanks for watching, and let me know if you need anything else👍

      @@VetteSource Forgot to mention that I left the runners untouched. So the plenum slides quite easily back in with new gaskets, without loosening the runners. I tried to remove the runners as well to have them polished too, but this is a real pain in the behind. Some bolts are completely hidden behind other stuff.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you have to drain the coolant first to remove the TB, or was is empty already ?

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin, you will need to drain a bit since you have the coolant line attached at the bottom of the throttle body.Many times it has already been disconnected, especially with the southern cars. We didn't need to warm up the incoming air charge any more than it already was, so it was a popular mod to make back in the day.

      The official designation from GM is the L98 Tuned Port Injection. On the 3rd gen Camaros and Firebird, the option code is B2L. You can also tell whether it was installed in a Corvette of Fbody by the location of the fuel lines. If they come off the engine on the passenger side it was originally installed in a Corvette and if they come in from the driverside it was originally in a Camaro or Firebird.
